One thing I should note to new Gegege no Kitaro fans: The Drawn and Quarterly manga translations (AKA what's widely available to the general public through physical books) are not 100% accurate. They're almost all minor changes, but it may get confusing at times to new fans.
Most of the changes have to do with names: An example that comes to my mind is that the Yokai Kawauso (lit: River Otter) was changed to a Tanuki. Although they both share similarities (animals that can shapeshift), they are two different Yokai, and it may get confusing since Kawauso shows up quite a bit in the 2007 anime. Another example is Vampire Elite, aka Johnny. His name was changed from "Elite" to "Eryt", which is not only confusing, but sort of changes the entire meaning of his name. (He's a Vampire... who drinks the blood of the socially and economically Elite...)
I was told by the head translator that these were done with Shigeru Mizuki's permission, but I'm still not entirely sure why these changes were made, because they all seem a bit strange to me, lol. Again, these are all pretty minor changes, but if you're confused at any point while reading, I highly recommend either checking the Gegege no Kitaro Wiki or asking someone in the fandom for more info :]

Stupid question, but... If Hollywood, USA ends up getting their hands on the rights to GeGeGe No Kitaro and they get Kitaro wrong from character to looks. Would you rather...
Have him look like an emo trying to be Deadpool?
Or
Have him look like a guy who doesn't look like him at all and make him a psychopath?
Or
Have him look and act like in that one Dragonball: Evolution Goku?
Pick your poison.
(I'm sorry if I offend y'all, I hate terrible American adaptations of foreign media as much as you do, please don't send hate)

"So what if you think smoking is bad? My body is made out of smoke and I can smoke whatever I want."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Name: Enenra
Nickname: Enra, Smoke yokai, Smoke demon
Age: 3000+
Main Ability: Creating mini enra, a smoke monster that often came out of her kiseru, manipulating smoke, travel via smoke from burning object.
Bio:
A yokai that often appeared as a smoke. She is a nice girl but she has a pretty sharp tongue, which makes some yokai hate her because they think that she is mean, but in reality she just giving a very constructive yet insulting critics and advices.
Like smoker and their cigar, she never get seperated with her kiseru, but she seems fine smoking with it because she made out of smoke, even her true form is a smoke. She can even made a mini enra (which can turned into Gigachad Enra when angry) from it and usually hide it inside her kimono sleeves

I had a dream that a rokurokubi visited me in the night times and was trying to kill me so I managed to grab them by their throat right under their chin to temporarily stop them. While they were struggling to get out of my grasp to continue their attempt on my life I booted up discord on my phone and sent a text message to my beloved friend, Kitaro (who obviously knows how to use. Phone app?) and instead of fucking calling him because it is an emergency I just texted him to see if he was awake. Because I was nervous about bothering him. Even when I am trying to escape being for real murdered by supernatural entities I am nervous about initiating DMs and voice calls...
Anyways he was awake and did respond but by then I had realized I can’t afford to wait for a rescue and managed to beat the rokurokubi into submission and worked out a truce. Power human

The principal still has his exorcism powers not as strong as before but still pretty strong so it’s understandable why onis would try to overthrow the principal through economic and political means instead of outright killing him.
Tumblr media
him having exorcism powers/previously being an onmyouji probably isnt public knowledge, i'd guess that, to youkai, he just has some kinda vague powers
and it's appropriate of him, as the nurarihyon, the youkai that slips into homes unnoticed and has such an aura of confidence about him that he's mistaken for the lord of the house, don't you think? from the onis' perspective, who have spent the past untold years eating humans and doing as they wished, for this former human to come strolling in and asserting himself as some sort of authority, educating the youkai that the onis thought of as "lesser" and defeating whoever went against him physically.
(irl, the way the modern nurarihyon came about is just as appropriate. originally starting as just the uninvited houseguest, without any of the "leader of youkai" parts, then in the 1960s it appeared in gegege no kitaro, making the unsupported and grand claim to be the commander of youkai, before actually becoming a leader of youkai as the manga progressed and needed an antagonist. the "leader of the hyakki yagyo" part of its description came about even more recently, possibly codified by the manga nurarihyon no mago in 2008. just an endless chain of showing up unannounced and asserting itself as an authority. source)
the principal almost always having some sort of bodyguard aside, perhaps it's not he himself these oni that are so pressed are against, rather the paradigm shift he brought, this new world that was no longer might makes right and onis aren't simply "superior by birthright". he's just the figurehead, and most troublesome is that he clearly has supporters who believe in what he's accomplished, so just taking him down probably won't cause society to crumble and return to how it was 1000 years ago like they hope it will.

I'm kinda curious about Sese now. Have anything to say on them?
Mm Sese yes, we've not too much, but there's certainly something to say about them yes.
Tumblr media
A Corpse in Search of Themself — Sese Kitsugai
Background
Information on Sese is a bit scattered as well, let's have a brief overview here:
Sese is a young youkai born out of a corpse, specifically, a skeleton. According to Sese themself, they think they've lived for a fairly long time, but hasn't become self-aware until recently.
Unlike most youkai, who manifest fully formed and matured, Sese is still maturing themself. This is possibly because they're separated from their original skeleton, which they're always on the search for.
To look for their bones, they excavate various locations around Mugenri, perhaps making use of their ability to "know the underground". Recently though, the act of excavation itself has started to fascinate them, and it's become a bit of a hobby itself.
The bones that we see on Sese's body are the ones that they have recovered, so in RMI they only had their right hand, but they found their right arm near the Harujion after the RMI main story as well.
Depicted below: Sese in RMI, with only their hand's bones.
Tumblr media
Additionally, Sese is able to temporarily incorporate other creatures' bones and souls to power themself up, which would be the other bones that they wear on their body.
Name: Sese Kitsugai
In Sese's family name, Kitsugai (乞骸), "kitsu" (乞) means "beg" while "gai" (骸) means "bone/body/corpse".
When read as one term, it literally means "begging for the return of a corpse", and is what Chinese court officials would ask for when they wish to retire from serving the Emperor and return home.
Here the official is referring to themself as the corpse, as a metaphor for how they're old and no longer useful to the Emperor. Its use here is likely in reference to how Sese is literally looking for their own corpse, or rather, their scattered skeletons.
The meaning behind their given name, Sese (セセ), is completely unknown. It's written in katakana and doesn't match the pronunciation of any Japanese word either. A possible theory is that it's Latin, where "sese" means "self".
Mythological Inspiration: Gashadokuro
Sese is a bit of a spin on the youkai gashadokuro (がしゃどくろ). Here, "gasha" (がしゃ) comes from onomatopoeia for rattling (bones), "gasha gasha" (ガシャガシャ), while "dokuro" (髑髏) means "skull", so gashadokuro means "rattling skulls".
They're "traditionally" said to be large skeleton youkai born from a massive gathering of skeletons of those who died in war or by the roadside and didn't receive a proper burial, animated by their desire for vengeance.
I say "traditionally" because the gashadokuro is actually a very recent creation, dating back to the ancient, ancient times of 1968, literally not even 60 years ago.
First seen in the 1968 Japanese children's book "Complete Collection of the Word's Bizarre Thrillers 2: Monsters of the World" in an article by writer Morihiro Saitou (斎藤守弘). The gashadokuro was later adopted by manga writer Shigeru Mizuki in his famous manga GeGeGe no Kitarō and made famous.
Depicted below: A statue of a gashadokuro on Shigeru Mizuki Road.
Tumblr media
This is a case where a youkai was basically created with no mythological basis at all, either way though, the gashadokuro has already entered the popular imagination, and it's here to stay.
The relatively modern origins of the gashadokuro may have inspired how young Sese is, and why they are still able to mature themself.
The gashadokuro was further influenced by the legend of Takiyasha-hime (滝夜叉姫), specifically a mythologized telling of her story first found in the 17th-century yomihon novel series "The Tale of Utou Yasutaka's Loyalty" (善知安方忠義伝) by Santō Kyōden.
In the story, Takiyasha-hime and her half-brother Taira no Yoshikado secluded themselves in the ruins of the old Sōma palace after Taira no Masakado's death, where they started recruiting those still loyal to Masakado's cause.
When cornered by the warrior Ooya Tarou Mitsukuni, they summoned an army of skeletons and controlled them to fight back at Mitsukuni and his men.
Based on the story, Utagawa Kuniyoshi made the following famous woodblock print (much more famous than the original story), where a single giant skeleton was summoned instead.
Tumblr media
This print was then used as the model for an illustration of a gashadokuro in the 1972 children's book "The Most Detailed Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Japanese Youkai" (いちばんくわしい日本妖怪図鑑), firmly cementing the idea that Takiyasha-hime summoned a gashadokuro to attack her enemies.
This explains Sese's claims to belong to royalty and why they have the same green hair as Fumikado does.
Who Was Sese Kitsugai?
One of the bigger mysteries surrounding Sese Kitsugai is who they were in life, or rather, who their skeleton was in life. To understand who they might have been, let's also take a look at:
Tumblr media
A Great Youkai Who Still Hasn't Quite Returned — Sese Kitsugai
In RMI's hidden Ex+α stage, Sese absorbs all the souls that the players have collected so far and temporarily transforms into a state closer to their original form.
While they still haven't recovered their old memories, on account of still not having found their cranium, they act a bit differently from their usual childish self, and seemed to have realised something about this game's incident:
RMI Shrine Team Ex+α (Sese's lines only) "Phew~. I've been revived!" "I'm far from top form, but I guess this is still a big improvement." "Oh yeah! It seems you've run into a lot of trouble because of Sese..." [...] "Nuh-uh, it was Sese's fault. Every last bit of it!"
While not outright confirmed, even only considering what we have from the original RMI, it seems to heavily imply that Sese was, in life, Taira no Masakado, the very person Fumikado was trying to revive.
Most telling is this line in the Music Room comments for Sese's Ex+α theme, Those Lurking in Unreality:
RMI Music Room: Those Lurking in Unreality When you trace the whole thing back to its source, you could say that this boss, in a way, is the main cause of the revival plot. Their true identity might not be explained in the main story, but there are some things that needn't be said, right?
For some additional evidence, there's Ex+α Sese's additional ability to "conquer the above-ground", which could possibly be a reference to Masakado's rebellious conquest of western Japan.
There's also Fumikado and Sese's conversation in BPoHC:
BPoHC New Emperor Team vs. Sese Fumi "Something feels... weird about them." Sese "Oh? One of you has the same hair color as Sese! We ma~atch!" Iyo "? Wait, what's this kid talking about...?" Fumi "I don't know, but something feels seriously disconcerting." [...] Fumi "But we won't go easy, alright? After all, I am the New Emperor." Sese "Sese's royalty too! Don't underestimate me!" [...] Fumi "[...] I wonder why this is, though? For some reason, I feel like giving my all for this little one."
It might be that Fumikado feels so disconcerted about yet oddly devoted to Sese because they're facing Masakado himself, or at least, a youkai born out of his skeleton.
Potential Inspiration: Taira no Msakado
If we indeed work under the theory that Sese was born from Masakao's skeleton, then there might actually be a basis for why Sese's skeleton is scattered all across the place:
It is historically known that when Masakado was defeated in battle, his head was chopped off and carried back to the capital at the time, Heian-kyō (Kyoto), where it was put on public display.
There are several legends where, for various reasons, Masakado's head one day flew up into the air and flew eastward toward the Kantō region, but ran out of strength midway and fell.
A number of shrines and other locations claim to be where Masakado's head landed, but the Masakado Mound (将門塚) in Tokyo is definitely the most popular one.
Depicted below: The Masakado Mound at Toyko.
Tumblr media
Similarly, there are a number of legends as to where and how Masakado's body was buried as well.
One example is that Masakado's younger brother, Taira no Masayori (平 将頼), gave the body a secret burial at the Enmei Monastery (延命院) in modern-day Bandō City, Ibaraki Prefecture.
Depicted below: Mound of Taira no Masakado's Body (平将門の胴塚) at Enmei Monastery
Tumblr media
Unlike his head though, there's no singular popular legend about where Maskado's body is. Nevertheless, this confusion about where Masakado's corpse is buried, if at all, may have inspired the scattering of Sese's skeleton.
And that's all I have on Sese, an interesting figure that seems to have quite the curious past. I'm quite interested in seeing where their story will take them in the future, let's hope we get to see more~ :)

I know i tried to put these thoughts in order once already... and I think I got about as close as I ever will with that. But my idiot brain decided to go back to it and try to make a big tiled diagram to organize it all. and of course I couldn't. There just aren't enough shared edges and coherent spacing for all the right thing to be adjacent to eachother.
But so long as we're revisiting this, there was a subject I tiptoed around before, because i knew if i indulged in it it would quickly derail yhe broader subject. But since this is otherwose mostly recap, ill indulge myself a bit, if only to add a little something new to this rant.
Tumblr media
Ichigo's manji/swastika motif is pretty firmly rooted in the buddhist side of things, as is the manji's use in the term and concept of bankai in every functional reading of the manga for what it is... but then his black sun thing, even though it's barely present, loops back around to weird escoteric n*zi bullshit that they stole from hindu and buddhist iconography, which unfortunately retroactively realigns Ichigo's motif with n*zi weirdness, even if he doesn't ever actively play into any of it... And the n*zi bullshit of course is where the sternritter uniforms came from, which again makes it uncomfortably close in proximity, even if it doesn't ever seem to make any kind of statement of any of it.
Tumblr media
But then Yhwach is obviously a play on Yahweh which is super awkward too, although arguably it's less any kind of a direct attempt at referencing judaism and just a proxy of the christian references. The angelic theme of the sternritter tying more into christian art than jewish, as well as the obvious catholic priest frock uniform influence. Yhwach being an obvious jesus analog what with the son of god, the miracle baby thing, and the blood sacrament bestowing schrift.
in fact his name was thankfully canonically romanized, but the katakana for it is actually Yuu-ha-ba-hha[ユーハバッハ] which is a real mess on its own. That's a German Wa though, japanized as "ba" which in turn indicates an approximation of an English V, not a W. Honestly I'm a little surprised Kubo didn't just opt to call him Jehova.
Tumblr media
But then there's vague Louis XIV stuff, which is kind of out of left field. But the LichtReich:"Light Kingdom" mixed with Uryuu's Licht von Prinz:"Prince of Light" epithets position Yhwach as a King of Light, and and the ornate sun gates tied specifically to his royal palace tie his light motif back to the sun, making him a King of the Sun, which is where the obtuse link to le Roi Soleil comes in.
Tumblr media
And really it all ties back in to sun imagery from every angle.
Tumblr media
And by loose proxy the overt Backbeard associations with Yhwach also being something of a black sun motif. Like Backbeard he's the leader of a western invasion force, a parallel opposition of a Japanese supernatural/occult counterpart just like in the classic yokai manga, GeGeGe no Kitaro. He loosely borrows the aesthetic of abstract darkness and menacing eyes that are at this point a fixture of manga/anime villains just in general.
Tumblr media
But also the Soul King himself being a vaguely christlike martyr, and a buddha figure, and like buddha the source of powerful reliquary of his enshrined disembodied bodyparts, which in turn somewhat loosely loops back around to christian reliquary practice as well.
Tumblr media
But then the limblessness also sort of ties into Daruma and the bodhidarma? Along with eyes that grant wishes, and a specific sort of thick facial hair, and a withered limbless inert meditative state...
Tumblr media
And that one Bleach Brave Souls Spirit Society AU throws some Amaterasu into the mix, because why the hell not...
Again, I didn't really find a geometrically satisfying way to put this all together into a single coherent diagram, but maybe having some of these isolated themes all placed side by side will help intuitively illustrate what it feels like I just have to take so many more words to outline than seems necessary...
Tumblr media
(there are upsettingly not actual good detailed looks at YHWACH's obviously eagle motif sword somehow...)
A thing that kind of confuses me —and stay with me here becauase this is going to be a bit of a leap in tangential thinking— is that bits of Ichigo already lightly reference classic super heroes: early chapter covers as well as the shinigami substitute badge itself reference Superman and the S-shield*, and in the context of Mashiro being a supersentai and kamen rider reference, Ichigo's name is likely at least partially a reference to Kamen Rider Ichigo(the retroactive distinction given the original kamen rider after the introduction of Kamen Rider Daigo.)
*and guess what oops another sun motif in superman. it's often not as central to Superman himself, but funny enough the sun thing usually factors more into parodies of Superman like Apollo or Hyperion or Sentry...
And if you're unfamiliar, the origin story of the original kamen rider is that Takeshi Hongo is abducted by SHOCKER a remnant of the n*zi's still active in Japan that experiment on him to turn him into one in a line of super soldiers against his will. The experiment is a success but he turns on his abductors with their own technology and wages a war of revenge and "Justice"(in the literal, lex talion-esque sense of the word) against the evil organization that ruined his life.
And it has since been a kind of unspoken world building rule that every kamen rider since, even as their themes settings and host of powers and villains change, is given or inherits his powers from the same source as the villains(being made by the enemy's experiments, having stolen enemy tech, being part of a race of monsters, etc...) but having his heroism defined not by the source of his powers, but by the conscious and deliberate choice and dedication to fighting evil.
So, point is... when it turns out that Ichigo is struggling with his powers coming from the enemy he's actively fighting, that he didn't choose for himself, where the ultimate moral is that so long as he can use it to protect the people he cares about, it shouldn't really matter where it comes from... When that enemy faction and Ichgio's own powers both start brushing shoulders with very overt n*zi imagery, it actually becomes weirder that Kubo didn't make said imagery more explicit.
Does that make sense?
Like, sure, if he had had the manji as a symbol strictly associated with bankai and the buddhist themes of enlightenment and dodged any sort of overt n*zi parallels that would be one thing. But to then make this whole dynamic with the Quincy and use all this imagery, but then not do something that very clearly outlines itself as
"guy with n*zi powers rejects his powers' benefactors to use them to fight n*zis; Just like in Kamen Rider!"
feels... weird? Not "wrong" per say... and not even "suspect" exactly... I don't really know how to pinpoint it. But if the Quincy as n*zis had just been a side effect of the Quincy as SHOCKER as an extension of Ichgio as Kamen Rider, then ALL this could've been much more easily swept under the rug. And we were kind of already right there, so why not?

Jeanne VnC, Emi MP100, and Mana GGGnK :3
Send me a character!
Hoo boy, here I go... I'm playing VnC OSTs as I type this.
Under the read more because this got super lengthy.
Jeanne (Vanitas no Carte)
First impression: Ohh she's badass!
Impression now: MY GIRL AAAAA PLEASE BE HAPPY
Favorite moment: WHEN!! SHE!! SMILES!! At that part Vanitas was stunned and I was like "damn me too bro", also the DomiJeanne dance because I ship them too
Idea for a story: Honestly I don't know? I think VnC is still far from being over so there are still a lot of things that could happen. This story is very unpredictable anyway. That said, I want to see Jeanne hanging out casually with Chloe and Jean-Jacques again...I just wanna see them happy together again.
Unpopular opinion: I don't know, I'm not into the fandom and don't engage with them.
Favorite relationship: I like VaniJeanne, but I also like DomiJeanne!
Favorite headcanon: Everyone in VnC is bi/pan unless specified otherwise, that includes Jeanne too. This is a headcanon that I see every now and then in the tag and my favorite so far to the point I apply it to other series other than VnC as well lol.
Emi (Mob Psycho 100)
First impression: She's so cute!!
Impression now: My favorite girl in MP100, surpassing Tome and Tsubomi. She may not get to appear much, but her character arc singlehandedly blew me away (and the anime made it much better). I love her.
Favorite moment: After the gorgeous scene of Mob reassembling her novel, she went to make a story inspired by Mob and that just made me soooo happy :")
Idea for a story: There really isn't a whole lot of room for her character, is it? I want her to be more involved in the story, but MP100 is not a story about her and she's, unfortunately, probably not that relevant in Mob's life as much as I wanted her to be. My idea is that I think I just want Emi and Mob to meet again and talk casually like friends. I know, I know they did talk briefly in S3EP3, but what I mean is after the end. I want Emi and Mob to meet again, then Emi realized how much Mob has changed compared to when they met for the first time, then they become good friends with no hard feelings. May be an opportunity for Emi to sort out her feelings for Mob as well, whether what she feels for him is romantic or platonic.
Unpopular opinion: There really isn't much discussion about her, so I haven't seen anything that causes me to think of something unpopular. I think if I have to state a general annoyance of how the fandom treats her, is that she's often shoved aside in favor of another character and more popular ship, but that doesn't really count.
Favorite relationship: MobEmi, whether it's romantic or platonic. I also have been thinking about Tsubomi/Emi a lot too.
Favorite headcanon: Tbh I very rarely adapt headcanons from fandoms unless it's something I really really like, but if there's one headcanon of Emi that falls into such category, then it'll be Emi recognizing tropes and genres and all that stuff because she's a writer. So if she sees 100% Courage Mob, Emi is like "why are you suddenly like a manga protagonist?!". It's a headcanon made by one of my favorite artists in the past, but it's still very funny to me.
Mana Inuyama (Gegege no Kitaro 2018)
First impression: PleasedontbelikeYumekopleasedontbelikeYumeko---
Impression now: I LOVE HER SO MUCH!! MY PRECIOUS DAUGHTER I WILL DIE FOR YOU!!
Favorite moment: Honestly Mana is such a great character, a lot of her moments are just amazing. I think I like her moments in EP20 (it's also one of the best episodes in the GGGnK), EP66, The Final Arc, and...her role in the entire Nanashi Arc (the first season). The Nanashi Arc in particular still stands out for me, god that was a rollercoaster. And in the final arc where she willingly sacrificed her memories for Kitaro? I cried so hard at that part. I love her, I'm so glad she's very well-developed and gets to play a lot of active roles in the plot.
Idea for a story: Gegege no Kitaro (2018) already feels like such a complete story, with a perfect feel-good ending too, so I'm not sure if I have any idea for it. I think I want an episode entirely dedicated to them hanging out again in a pure fluff episode, a similar vibe to EP94, explaining the photograph sent on the end screen of the final episode. That would be great, I just want to see the main 2018 trio be together and happy.
Unpopular opinion: I...don't know? I'm not too engaged with the fandom, so I have no unpopular opinion of her.
Favorite relationship: Kitaro-Mana-Neko Musume, they are a set do not separate!!
Favorite headcanon: It's less of a headcanon and more of a just little idea, but since Mana and Neko Musume are very well-versed in "modernity", I like the idea of them teaching all kinds of modern languages and slangs to Kitaro. Kitaro doesn't like it at all.

WIP challenge
Rules: "post the names of all the files in your WIP folder regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them and then post a little snippet of it or tell them something about it! And then tag as many people as you have wips. I have deemed that this isn’t just for writing either. Sketch titles? Comics? Dnd campaigns? If you have an unfinished project, it counts!!"
