douman, the classic high ego (perhaps to make up for?) low self esteem, the reason he wants to beat seimei so bad is because he 1. thinks highly of seimei as a person (for his abilities or otherwise) 2. which is why he values seimei's opinion at all and 3. in doing so would also get the approval of the public. which, if we look at the things he talks about: status, fame, the emperor's trust, all of which have to do with what others think of him. and even in the present he's huge on public image, for professional reasons or otherwise

all of this is just to say that, ranmaru doesn't really get this, from the bottom of his heart doesn't empathise with whats making douman act this way and want these things, which is what i think puts him in dismissive-avoidant and not fearful-avoidant

(and also btw since this is douman retelling the events to haru he wouldnt know what was going on in ranmarus head back then!! ranmarus just on the roof of the boat giving his own authors notes on the story??? lmao)

he reads as dismissive-avoidant to me mostly, hes cagey about everything, the number of people he engages with regularly can be counted on one hand and youd have fingers left over, he acts like he depends on the troupe and douman for petty stuff but he really doesnt trust/depend on people for stuff that matters (his secret motive that he thinks douman will help achieve that hes also not going to tell him about, also not telling douman that hes gonna get smited for killing him) (and also he doesnt want others to depend on him)

...although i guess he could also be fearful-avoidant (was that the other one u were flip flopping on?), its unclear how much of him is an act (but if ur putting on an act 100% of the time isnt that just called your personality??), but i dont think his self esteem is that bad
