I’m not an argumentative person, really.  I’m only active on two forums, and my responses to comments attached to news articles are pretty infrequent.  So I’m not regularly looking to start a fight or jump into a flame war or whatever they’re called these days...

Most of the time, if someone says something that I feel I need to respond to, it will be in a comments section for a newspaper or magazine that I haven’t registered with and, even if I take the time to formulate a reply, by the time I have to go through all the folderol involved in registering, I’ve managed to convince myself that it isn’t worth the effort because most of the time they’re trolls and you can’t win if you go up against a troll, right?  I’m too old, life’s too short, and why bother, right?

But somewhere along the line, I signed up with Disqus.  And I was idly reading through reviews for “Good Omens” and I ran upon a person who was disparaging the entire effort (first “boo”), and then dismissed David Tennant as, basically, a one-trick pony, stating that his career is filled with the same type of characters and he never challenges himself yadda yadda yadda.

My reply was short, sweet, POLITE, and to the point:  if he thinks DT plays the same character over and over again, he obviously has seen about one-tenth of his entire body of work.

My new “friend” comes back with “I have neither the time nor the inclination to follow careers of actors, sorry.”

“Fair point,” I answer.  “But lacking the time nor inclination sort of negates the always, don’t you think?  Better to say in your limited experience.”

Well.  Apparently, that hit a nerve.  What followed were three paragraphs wherefrom I gleaned the following:  a) he’s married to “something called a Whovian” and has therefore been forced to observe DT in far too many television shows, stage, feature films, podcasts; and b) has attended one too many WhoCons where, to his obvious dismay, he has been forced to mingle with more things known as Whovians with their toy screwdrivers, Officially Licensed Costumes®, and the like. He then made another veiled reference to all of DT’s failed acting roles, his limited range, and then thanked me for being yet another internet voice who likes to tell people what they should think and how they should feel.

My stepfather, who I don’t at all remember fondly, did share one bit of paternal wisdom way back when, on those occasions when I was tempted to argue with my baby brother:  if you start, you’ve already lost.

Oh, I had to reply, of course.  I mean, the battle was already lost so what’s one more closing salvo.  I couldn’t let the disrespect inherent in calling his significant other a “thing” go unanswered.  I allowed that we would have to agree to disagree on the rest, and finished with a “best wishes”.  I expect that will be the end of it.  I suspect that my first supposition was the correct one:  his knowledge of David Tennant’s vast and varied body of work is terribly limited; there’s no way that anyone could ever lump the Tenth Doctor, Alec Hardy, and Richard II together as evidence of a “limited range”.

It will be a while, however, before I again trouble myself with reading comments after an article - regardless of the subject matter.
