"I like adding spontaneous, fun extra challenges to the day as much as the next guy, provided the next guy is you, but I have to say, I think Floor is Lava Tuesdays is a better idea than weird plastic puzzle locks on the cabinets."

Roxas glanced up from where he knelt on the floor, fixing covers and bars on the under the sink cabinets in the kitchen to see his husband framed in the doorway, looking the casual print ad model, chiseled lines under soft sweats, hands curled around a mug of steaming liquid that smelled almost as delicious as the holder (of course the mug was emblazoned with the word SLUT in bold letters which would probably have to be censored out of the ad), bun with just enough flyaways to seem careless but pulled to the perfect angle. "I'm baby proofing."

"As the baby, I resent that remark," Axel tutted before setting his coffee next to the sink and crouching down beside Roxas. "What brought this on? You have some news to tell me?"

Axel expected an eye roll from his husband, but Roxas set the angry looking plastic finger trap he was holding down and ran a hand through his hair nervously, a mild pink tinge crawling up his neck and Axel felt his smile freeze in the middle of forming. "Well, actually, I do have some news..."

"You're kidding." Axel felt his blood run cold and then super heated through his veins in quick succession as time slowed down.

Roxas's frown at the interruption morphed to a furrowed brow of confusion and then annoyance. "Axel, I told you already. Replica bodies don't work that way. I'm not going to 'go seahorse'"

"Xion can..."

"Xion is a special case. You are stuck with me with no alterations."

"Eh, I still have the much better end of the deal."

"Yeah, you do."

A shared smile and a quick kiss distracted Axel a moment longer from asking, "So what's the news?"

"I told Sora and Riku we'd babysit for them tonight." Roxas ripped the bandage off quickly. He braced for a less than enthusiastic response, though actually receiving one was still disappointing.

"Listen, I'm sorry about the acknowledgements. Every book I write is dedicated to 'my heart, my love, my Roxas.' I thought that was a given by now, and I just had to write what other dedications would come after it. It was the publisher's fault, and I should not be punished."

"I'm not punishing you," Roxas felt his face wilt as he picked back up the baby proofing supplies to finish what he had started. "I thought it would be fun. Riku and Sora really need a night out, and it gives us a chance to, you know, see what it's like."

It wasn't that Axel missed Roxas's hurt tone or his latter words and their meaning, even if they had been mumbled. It was more a combination of not wanting to be lured toward a slippery slope of manipulation or ready to revisit the conversation of whether he felt they should start seriously thinking about adding to their family soon rather than a general "some day" they'd always said before. Roxas had brought it up last week, and Axel appreciated that he had, but it hadn't exactly gone well when he'd been taken by surprise and his gut instinct response was less enthusiastic than Roxas had seemed to want. He was letting the idea soak in now, and it needed a little more time to marinate before he could give a response. If Roxas was going to push, it would probably need even more time. So it was better not to toe too closely to the sensitive, personal part of baby discussion and do what they both had the inclination to always go back to, deflection with a joke. "To let a Babynort into the house?"

"Ripan is not a Nort." Roxas hissed defense of his other's son since Sora and Ripan couldn't defend themselves.

"Then how come he has white hair? Answer me that," Axel challenged.

"He has silver hair. Like Riku. Riku's genes are the only inherited evil Ripan has and I don't think we should hold that against him. He's just a baby."

"No, no, babies are adorable balls for holding and cooing at and then handing back to their parents. Terrifying because their heads are squishy and they can't hold them up, but otherwise not dangerous at all. This thing is mobile. I've seen it." Axel lent the revelation the appropriate air of horror, though he neglected to mention he'd seen Ripan crawling up a wall, imitating either one of his fathers or the younger Incredible boy, which rendered his warning easily mistaken for his typical melodrama.

"That's why I'm baby proofing."

"Did you get the upstairs?"

"It's not going to be able to climb the stairs by itself...Is it?"

Axel thought it over since the stair thing seemed to alarm Roxas. "Probably more easily than it could get to the ceiling. I'm just going to feed it ice cream and hope that appeases it."

"I don't think it..he can have ice cream yet. Sora said he was going to write us a list of rules."

Axel's attitude toward the night ahead of them turned on a dime when the suggestion that someone else thought he was less than capable intruded to punch at his ego. "Rules like what? We know what to do."

"Damn straight." Roxas stood, dusted off his hands, and stole Axel's coffee off the counter.

"We'd be great with kids," Axel insisted, reaching out to take the coffee back, taking a sip, and returning it to Roxas.

"That's right," Roxas encouraged.

"We take care of Demyx!" Axel could honestly say that he'd fed, bathed, and rocked Demyx to sleep under different circumstances. Luckily, no diapers had ever been involved. "We're Turkey's dads!"

"And he's the most demanding little baby of all!" Roxas championed Axel's logic even while being reminded that he'd forgotten to feed Turkey before starting his project with the cabinets. He'd have to rectify that now. It was a miracle Turkey wasn't already dramatically expressing the utter betrayal of being left to starve.

"Next to me," Axel provided the punchline at his expense.

"Next to you." Roxas leaned up on tiptoe to steal a kiss and pressed the coffee cup with its last sips at the bottom into his husband's hands for him to finish off. "Now go put on something more suitable for tonight."

"What's more suitable than sweats for babysitting a baby? A tarp?" Axel drained the coffee.

"Put on something nice."

"Is Ripan conducting a formal interview before storytime?"

"No, but his dads might."

Roxas's instincts turned out to be right. Sora and Riku not only had a list of rules but a pop quiz on protocol and babysitting readiness that needed to be passed before they would leave, despite the fact that Roxas and Axel, already had the job, were doing it as a favor, were only taking Ripan for a few hours and not permanently adopting him and taking him into the heart of Deep Jungle, and Riku and Sora's normal babysitter was a fifteen year old girl (though Violet had warned them that she might have to cut back even more than she had. Ripan and her brother Jack Jack tended to be "a little challenging" in her words, when she had to watch both of them).

Ripan's part of the testing was to sit on the floor sucking on his giraffe pacifier and rolling an alphabet block between his hands, occasionally looking up with large, liquid blue eyes either to question why he was sitting on a strange floor or to ask why his dads were still there. Or maybe to ask why the other baby curled in the entertainment center next to the cable box was so ugly and meowed.

"I promise you. Ripan is going to have so much fun tonight he's never going to want to leave...but he's also going to be asleep by nine and I won't forget to rub the cream on his arms before I put on his sleepytime shirt," Roxas swore, crossing his heart over the I like coffee and maybe three people shirt he'd neglected to change out of despite telling Axel to look nice.

"Okay, I believe in you," Sora assured him before selling out his husband. "But Riku sincerely does not. So can you please promise me you will take extra good care of our little angel? I know he's kind of a handful, but-"

"Are you kidding?" Axel chuckled, unperturbed. "You're talking to the best babysitters in the business. There is no one more qualified for this job."

"You've literally never done this before," Riku groused, hands clenching in his pockets as he regressed to his old nervous tick.

"We are totally capable of taking care of your precious angel, okay? It's not like we don't have kids too." Roxas gestured to the entertainment center where Turkey sat, eyeing the miniature human. It had eyes like His Boy, so Turkey thought he might be able to trust it, but the threat of someone else Heat Giver and His Boy might want to snuggle that was not Turkey was hard to face.

"That's why I'm concerned," Riku concentrated on breathing evenly through his nose and not sounding too snappish. "That is not a child. That is a cat in a knit sweater."

"We'll be fine," Roxas insisted, ignoring Riku's slight, when defending Turkey's status as first child would make Sora and Riku miss their reservation. "We have your list and everything he needs. You two just enjoy yourselves!"

"See, it's fine, Riku." Sora nudged Riku toward the door. "Bye Ripan! Behave yourself for your uncles!"

Ripan gurgled solemnly, swearing to be nothing but the perfect child.

"Have fun guys! We'll be back around eleven!" Sora nudged Riku a bit harder, recognizing him for the immoveable object he was. "Riku stop glaring and walk."

Roxas opened the door for them, Axel waved to them as they retreated, Roxas closed the door. It was a total of maybe fifteen seconds they didn't have eyes on Ripan. The first fifteen seconds they were in charge of the vulnerable life of the baby that had been sitting near motionless and content in the living room for fifteen minutes. The baby that was still sitting content after those fifteen seconds and still near motionless, just with his pacifier out of his mouth and on the floor beside him and his mouth working as if he were chewing.

Axel and Roxas shared a glance and dove at the same time. Ripan shrieked, which should have proved his mouth was empty, but Axel used the opportunity to sweep a finger inside the child's mouth to make sure. Ripan employed natural defenses. Namely, biting down as hard as he could with his four impressive teeth.

Axel howled. Ripan laughed which allowed the red head to withdraw his injured hand. Roxas comforted Axel, for a moment, then warned him not to take his eyes off Ripan again because they might not get lucky again, and went to wash floor germs from the pacifier for the first, but, by no means, last time of the night. Minute one drew to a close with everyone still unscathed.

Minute fifteen gave birth to everyone's least favorite game, Turkey Chase and Smack, though Crawl Behind Couch gave it a difficult battle for the title.

At the end of the first hour, a nice balance had been found and everyone was getting along until Axel tried to heat up a bottle by summoning fire in his hand and subsequently scalded his wrist while testing results, as well as putting the idea of fire into Ripan's head. Sora had been right. Ripan was very smart and liked to try and mimic what the big people did. The living room couch suffered.

The next hurdles were The Incident of the Second Bottle Being Too Cold, The Great Despair of not Being Able to Have Both Bottle and Pacifier at the Same Time, Bottle Gone Too Quick, The Pukening, Second Washing of the Pacifier and Trial of Separation Anxiety, The Changing of the Onesies with Ripan Super Spleen Kicking Action, and The Pukening Part Two: Roxas's Shirt Looks Absorbent.

It was all minor stuff. Normal stuff. Expected, other than perhaps setting fire to the couch.

The real trouble didn't begin until the pacifier was lost.

Tale 11: Artemis Craweleoth & The Griminthrope (chapter 2 - Summoning Problems 2/5) part 3. Stories of Fey

Patrick was the baby of the family, and thus the child of winter. Therefore, he was named by the Wolf King. The Current Wolf King knew their father Morgan, before he was Wolf King; or Morgan King Mage. Knowing his brother of men well, he named Patrick after Morgan’s late grandfather. The older girls were a bit jealous they didn’t get as sentimental of a name. Not that their’s were any less special. Not many people can say they were literally named by magic itself.

The family thought it odd that Patrick would leave before Artemis. In hindsight, no one could pry her from her coop. Patrick on the other hand, had tangible plans for his future; that were away from home. He had an adventurous spirit. After graduating school, and unable to be a legal paladin, Patrick had taken post in Grand Snow in the Westlands. He could have easily gotten an apprenticeship with Morgan’s friend Amadeus, but wanted to work right away; against his paladin coach, Kent Summorhind’s, advice. What inspired Patrick to go to the Westlands, was his eldest sister, Cadence. She had gotten her heartman healing apprenticeship, and a husband, from that magic valley. Patrick had heard so many stories of the Dragon Gate growing up; Grand Snow was an ancient, traditional, and isolated village. It was like a large bowl of circling enchanted steep mountains, that cradled it in a cold and magical serenity. It was a magic forest where humans and fey lived beside each other, in a way akin to a time before magic and war.

Patrick was welcomed by the forests existing mages, Ourboros Blacneadre and Saianne Healpenbroc. He would be the next generation’s mage, and be a new addition to the gene pool. The people of Grand Snow were so isolated, and so few, they became their own sub ethnicity in need of new strong youth. The people were eager to meet him. When it was another one of the Mage King’s children, they had high expectations. Ouroboros and Saianne had never seen Patrick in person; all they knew was of him was from Morgan and Emilia’s letters. Cadences only mentioned a few things in passing. Ouroboros had been a good Friend to Morgan when they went to school together, and thus was happy to help his children. Speaking of which, Saianne and Ouroboros’s son, Basilisk, had seen Patrick on Tiberius Gate when he went to Pepperidge academy with Cadence. His twin Levi, had left after marrying Cadence, making Basil, Patrick’s brother-in-law.

Though Basil and Ouroboro’s warmed up easily, Patrick had trouble wooing the other villagers. Shiny new genetics weren’t enough to prove worth, and an ability to survive in this high-altitude archaic village. Being a mage made him worthy of respect, yet they still avoided him. This was because Patrick had a special barrier: like all his siblings, he had the properties of the magic quadrant he was born into. Patrick acted like a wolf that wandered the slopes of the snowy peaks, instead of the mild valley. To the villagers, Patrick was like a rumor or myth that people felt was there, but never saw. It would appear, it wasn’t that they were avoiding him, but that he was drawn away from them, and toward the depths of the magic of the Dragon Gate.

One day, Patrick was called into the village by Ouroboros. Patrick was living in a shack upon the north slopes of the village; of which he had renovated by hand. Not much happened in Grand Snow, thus resulting in nothing to do, but do everything by hand from scratch. Patrick’s choice of post was ‘here if you need me’ deal. He was planning on getting wood and meat that day, so he was not amused when Ouroboros approached him while he was going about his day casually. Goood news, or bad new, Ouroboros was a lot of a person; and when he approaches people instinctively brace themselves. For once, today’s news was bad news; a murder had occurred. The scene had only a large smear of blood upon the snow, by a runic summoning spell. Any life lost in the small fragile heritage village, was great tragedy.

“Who did this? Only me, you and your wife can use magic.” Patrick asked Ouroboros.

“No clue; but I can’t tell if our friend died from summoning, which kills anyone except your father the King Mage, or if the fey summoned was not happy about it. It would be odd if someone else here did this; my people don’t use magic out of respect for mages and fey. We don’t even have wizardry resources here, due to cultural preservation protocols. I’ll look into who did this, and see who’s missing.” Ouroboros coughed. The smell of ice and blood was ghastly. He was the village’s only medical personal, and had seen a lot in his life thus far; but something about potential murder made him gag.

“I’m a paladin, and am practiced in wolf kingdom, and winter, magery. I could easily survive the mountains and track down whatever fey escaped; If a fey is responsible. The blood doesn’t bother me much,” Patrick said, kneeling down the failed summoning charm. It looked like a junior wizard was trying to summon a dragon. The diagram faced south, with poorly written runes.

“That would be helpful. I feel like I’ve forgotten something; This scene of blood on snow leading into the woods reminds me of something, but I cannot quite put my finger on it.” Ouroboros sighed. Patrick pointed out a specific rune on the center of the bloody diagram. Patrick smelt dust and feathers underneath the filth and blood. Ouroboros refused to come any closer.

“Whoever tried to summon a fey, didn’t know Old Anglian runic; because the rune they used was daigan. Maybe they thought ‘d’ for ‘dragon’; people like to summon dragons, right? Or perhaps it was a local who only knows Old Danian runic. Regardless, the rune for daigan is for day, when the raven children come out and sing. Maybe it worked; even though it faces the wrong way and is technically impossible?” Parick postulated. Ouroboros was slowly backing away from the gore. “All the people here have an idea about how magery works, and the lethality of summoning fey. I refuse to believe someone would try something so stupid. Which is only more proof it could be anyone.”

Seeing the carnage, and broken branches, Patrick began racking his brain for fey knowledge. Patrick only remembered the one raven child that was known to eat the rotting, leave a scene bloody but vacant, and are strong enough to kill: A Griminthrope. The princes of the Raven King.

“My father said that someone needs the name of a fey to summon them, there is none. And if they knew the name, they would’ve just called it. Which means a random fey of the raven kingdom would have been summoned. I Don’t know about you, but the only Raven child I can imagine dining on the flesh of men, are the ones that are supposed to be in a death tree in the shadow veil…” Patrick said standing up. Ouroboros laughed. The only Grimethorpe he had ever met, was hand reared by Morgan; and was a plucky crafty fellow. The prince had developed so much empathy, he refused to eat anything that was human, or was given a name. The memory brought Ouroboros back to his school days. Then a darkness overcame his face; there was no grantee the raven prince summoned, was the one he remembered fondly. Ouroboros, as mage of this magic forest, was overcome with fear for the safety of the people, fey and animals one the gate.

“Find him; And be careful, Patrick. Your father may have helpful resources; he did a grad study on griminthropes. If you can get to the radio phone in the top cabin, the Goldenscale family can help you cantact him. I will take care of finding who died, and who did this.” Ouroboros said.

That night, Patrick headed up the slopes upon his wolf familiar Orion, to call for help. The village buried the bloodied snow, as they could not find a body. The raven princes were known to eat a whole carcass; the princesses too. The village decided to do the head count in the morning, as the whole event was quite shocking. Patrick wouldn’t be there to help everyone feel safe that night; his mission to protect Grand Snow was more important.

In the morning, after the head count, they found no one was missing. Which was almost as disappointing, because it meant a fey, or even a beloved town animal, could have been a victim. Every life was precious, not just that of humans. To Ouroboro’s disappointment, Basil came forward, admitting he was responsible for the summoning. He was the only commoner to have an education in magic; having gone to Pepperidge like his, twin, parents, and Patrick. Basil didn’t want to stop doing magic just because it wasn’t traditional. Boredom made him want to see what he could remember or do. Though he was not supposed to use it. The hole village was irate. Ouroboros was disappointed in his son. To have the audacity to use magic in the presence of mages in Grand Snow. This is why wizards shouldn’t use magic everyone scoffed; they do stupid things with it, that always ends badly. Now the mage have to restore balance.

“I’m sorry. I thought no one would notice, and assumed there was no harm done. I just left when the spell failed. In all honesty, I thought it was an object summoning charm; all the old books on magic here, read the same. I also used fairy wax, which I realized should have made it nonfunctional…I was wrong; about all of that.” Basil explained. He was shown mercy for honesty, and sent to spend the whole day doing a head count on livestock, pets, and fey; as punishment. He hoped he would find nothing, because the owner of whatever died, would be responsible for sentencing him further.

When Patrick got back into town after using the radio phone to contact his father Morgan. He saw Ouroboros and Saianne peering into the well in the town center; they looked disgusted.

“Basil used magic. In order to stay in Grand Snow, he agreed to never use it; as is law for commoners here. Me and Ouroboros are disappointed he broke his promise, but we don’t have the heart to banish him.” Saianne said. “Hopefully what I told him about griminthropes will deter him from future error more than the guilt and shame. I hate that I can relate.” She went on. Ouroboros looked up to see Patrick standing like nervous wreck. As if the betrayal was irrelevant.

“Spit it out. Stop looking like your father, and tell us what he said.” Ouroboros snapped.

“Oh…Well the thing is…My father wasn’t exactly…. Available to help us…” Patrick stammered.

Former boss botches me then tries to withhold pay when I quit...pays the ultimate piper when I push back!

I consider myself a decent person and an above average employee. I worked for a medical office directly under a doctor for almost 2 years and was consistently facing issues with him from the start. He was aloof, unhelpful, didn’t want to train or help establish protocol. Just wanted me to run everything and take the fall for anything that went wrong.

He was married with children but flirted and slept with numerous patients and staff members. This isn’t unheard of in this field, so I often just kept my nose down and tried to do my best at my job regardless of his after hour activities. Problems started to arise more and more though as he hired people based on looks and his attraction to them vs their qualifications to do the job.

I tolerated a lot of bullshit, but the last straw was when he wanted me to do some somewhat illegal activities financially and when I refused the games began. I could sense that he was unhappy with my unwillingness to do whatever he wanted me to willy-nilly, but didn’t think he was upset enough to justify punishing me or trying to get rid of me in any way.

Then literally ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE after a minor procedure I had him do for me. We were in good standing (or so I thought) and I thought nothing of having him do it at the time. What sucked royally is that he botched my procedure and caused permanent damage. That wasn’t even the worst part, the way he dealt with it was.

Instead of apologizing and offering to make it right to which I’m pretty understanding and would have accepted, he denied anything was even wrong or had happened under his care. He went into total ‘cover ass’ mode and methodically started to try to get rid of me without firing me (as it would definitely be wrongful termination) and the tension was becoming unbearable more and more each day.

I was hoping he would make it right and we could move on, but instead every day was full of scrutiny of my choices and work and even a write up for a minor offense that I had no prior warning about. I could see the writing on the wall and realized he was going to wash his hands of me as quickly as possible to preserve his precious reputation which I could definitely disrupt now with his mistake with me.

I noticed shortly after while on a planned vacation he was advertising for my job. I decided to quit then and there instead of be fired. I was trying to fix the botch prior to quitting and hoping he would help financially, nope, not gonna happen. Told him I was quitting and since we were under very abnormal circumstances that I would not be offering my typical two week notice. He was PISSED.

He was late with my last paycheck in which he sent a snide letter with telling me he was done with me and my care with him. I noticed that the check was short for 2 sick days I had taken after the botch...we are talking around $275 but it was still enough money that I felt rightly owed. I had a TON of sick pay left and didn’t even give it a second thought until now and thought maybe he just forgot to add it.

Nope, he responded curtly saying I hadn’t accumulated enough time to pay for the days. I asked to see proof of that because I knew I had enough time. He changed the accumulation date to another month and said tough luck, wasn’t going to pay. I told him blatantly that this was wrong and that I would have to report it to the labor board if he couldn’t show me proof. He just bullied me back and insisted it is what he says it is and again tough luck.

He even said to quit contacting him about it or he would report me for harassment to law enforcement. So I went to the labor board. I brought in my contract and asked them about numerous questionable offenses. They couldn’t believe how many skewed things were actually going on that I had accepted because I didn’t know or he had convinced me otherwise. They had me file for all of the offenses and said they would send us both a letter letting us know the mediation date.

Got the letter in the mail from the labor board and almost fell over dead right then I there. What was originally a $275 offense with the other minor claims and now ‘penalties’ added from the labor board the total was now $6,500!! I laughed hysterically and couldn’t believe it at first. I thought about him receiving the same letter that day and just reveled at the thought admittedly.

Keep in mind he didn’t know at this point that I had actually went to the labor board as I promised. He didn’t think I would do it, he thought he had won up to this point. Mediation day roles around and he sits across from me with the mediator there and is steaming under the pressure now. We both share our sides (which he lied about numerous things of course) and then we talk separately with the mediator. She explains to me that my case may be hard to prove, being somewhat he said/she said.

She encourages me to kind of take whatever he offers. Before leaving the room with her I bring up one more thing to her that I was unsure of and didn’t ask about before. It involved him not paying overtime, and she lit up like a damn Christmas tree. BINGO. With that type of offense and me being able to show verifiable proof he would have to pay the penalties starting at $6,000 and whatever the judge added after that. She went and told him of this new claim, and he fumed out of the building saying I shouldn’t be able to add anything at this point (not the case at all) and that he needed to speak with his lawyer.

I get a new claim in the mail with the added offense weeks later, the total is now $9,600! I die again laughing and just basking in the thought of him getting this new claim. There was no contact from him this whole time but now suddenly there is an email sent to me in the sweetest tone I’ve ever heard him speak. He pleaded with me that he never meant to withhold anything from me and that he would like to settle all this peacefully outside of the court. Of COURSE he would I thought to myself.

I forwarded the email to our mediator and told her that I did not want to respond and asked her to deal with him and let him know I wanted to continue the no contact he requested earlier. Weeks go by, we are creeping closer to a court date....suddenly the offer roles in $4,000 and he will settle (I was set on $5,000 because of all the hassle I had to go through up to this point.) I tell the mediator to tell him nope, $6,000.

Silence for another week or two....then the offer of $5,000 comes. That was my number so I waited a couple days (just to shake him up a bit more) and the mediator let him know I’d accept it. I received the payoff within a week, and then I got to wash my hands of HIM in the end.

He thought he could cheat me and bully me as I’m sure he has gotten away with it in the past. I gave him a swift lesson that could have just cost him $275 to do the right thing...but now I’m going on a vacation to Hawaii and will sip a Mai Tai on his dime for trying to take back what I had rightfully earned and more!

TL;DR: Had a boss that tried to bully me and withhold some of my last check after botching a procedure he did on me causing me to quit. I stood up for myself and took him to court and won $5,000 for what could have been a $275 offense for him originally.
