hey, so would it be okay for this to just be read and not answered? i want to respect everyone's privacy.
so, i used to be in your old discord you now privated and that's totaly fine! whatever makes u most comfy! i kinda put two and two together with the person u were talking about on here and someone who left that discord like 2 weeks ago. IF its the same person im thinking of, then they are currently being harassed, called a c*nt, delusional, anon is asking for usernames of people, which they refuse to give and dont want to speak about the situation further (they honestly arent even talking about it and seem to be moved on? idk what anon is on about). essentially a very similar message to yours of dont harass anyone or ask questions further, we both will move on etc i saw it and your message that hate wont be tolerated and i really hope whoever the anon is isnt sending you hate either... it's a weird situation and idk what to do other than bring it to attention, even tho i know you want to move on and heal from this person, i also feel strongly about cyberbullying and people who are nosy and want to get involved for no reason. i just wish healing for everyone involved<3 anyway, that's all and i hope that you are doing well regardless! im wishing you a lovely day or night mwah<3
No, anons haven’t sent me any hate at all, this is actually fucking disgusting. Maybe I haven’t gotten the hate yet? Either way I’m assuming it’s someone from my old server or someone sending them hate just to cause more drama between the two of us.
So big announcement, if you’re sending hate to anyone on my behalf, I want you to fucking show yourself. I want you to apologize. I already asked everyone to not send any hate to anyone, it’s not hard at all to do.
I made a mistake making it public(though I did not mention their name once on tumblr), and this is a very harsh lesson to learn. I have the person that’s receiving this hate blocked or I would personally apologize to them, but if they see this, that’s not what I wanted at all. If you find out who is sending you the hate you can contact me and I’ll make sure they get reported. You can also report anonymous messages, and it should still affect their account! I did this in the past and it got someone’s account who was bullying me taken down.
I never mentioned the persons name publicly but I did vent about them in my discord after the big falling out because I was so frustrated. I didn’t want more people to know who they were after I calmed down so I kicked everyone I didn’t trust.
If someone I trusted did this, it breaks my fucking heart. This is not what we do, this shouldn’t be tolerated by anyone. Idc what anyone did in this situation, she didn’t do anything worthy of receiving hate. No one should get that kind of shit. No one.
I would have hoped people had some common fucking decency. This literally pissed me tf off.
It’s a big lesson, even if you think you can trust people with information, you always have to be careful. That’s why I made a whole new server with no drama and no vents or anything to prevent this. It’s partially my fault, even if I didn’t say their username on my tumblr I did say it in my discord server. At the time it only had around 20ish people, but soon after I posted in vent I made the vent channel private and kicked 10 people, the unprivated the vent channel after. Before we had a falling out I didn’t mention them at all, and it should have stayed that way.
I haven’t checked their account since I blocked them, but they should be able to block the anonymous accounts. I’m pretty sure it blocks alts as well? Because when I block someone at least I’m unable to see the account on my alt. Idk about being blocked though. Sorry I don’t usually try to go to someone’s account after I’ve been blocked.
I’d recommend turning off anons for a while, it’s what I did after the fallout because I was afraid of getting bad anonymous asks as well. And at the time before I turned it off I did receive a few nasty asks about me being dramatic etc, but I didn’t really give it much thought.
People enjoy drama and stirring the pot. I think I’ll also turn off anon and limit my messages to people I follow only for a bit just to be safe 😭
If you send anyone hate on my behalf, you are scum. I don’t tolerate bullies, that situation has been over with for nearly a week now, and we both moved on. There’s no reason to send hate to anyone.
I’m sorry, in the future I’ll be more mindful of who I vent to. It’s just not okay, I thought I could trust my server of FULLY GROWN ADULTS to act like adults should, but clearly fucking not. I’m not only disappointed, but also angry and upset.
If you think sending someone hate on my behalf helps me at all, you’re wrong. All it does it hurt others and cause more problems for me. This has brought back all the stress of the situation when I felt like I finally moved on from it.
I’m sorry, again, it’s my fault for trusting the wrong people. I’ll keep my venting between my closest friends from now on. This is just not acceptable behavior, who the fuck sends someone anonymous hate over INTERNET DRAMA? Go outside, touch some grass, interact with someone in the real world!
I offer all of my apologies to the person affected. Not mentioning their name, but I really hope this message clears everything up. I don’t want anyone sending ANYONE hate.

PRIDEFALL UPDATE: real or fake?
What is Pridefall?
Operation Pridefall, also known as Project Pridefall or simply Pridefall, refers to an attack planned by /pol/ (a political discussion board on the anonymous website 4chan) for all of June, AKA Pride month. The original 4chan thread, which has since been deleted, was primarily focused on “redpilling,” i.e. spreading queerphobic propaganda to make people question the LGBTQ+ community. However, now that it has spread outside 4chan, there are threats of harassing, doxxing, and outing queer people (especially minors) on social media, spamming gore and rape videos in private messages and Pride tags, and even kidnapping, assaulting, or killing queer people in real life.
Specific targets include Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, and dating apps. The goal is to go after smaller accounts so the queerphobia isn’t lost in the comments.
Is Pridefall real?
Yes and no.
I searched “pridefall” on 4chan last night. Apparently any new threads on it are being deleted, and anytime someone mentions it, everyone calls them slurs and says no one is doing it.
However, Pridefall is gaining some traction on Instagram--I have seen it for myself. I don’t have TikTok or any dating apps, but I’ve heard that some people are spamming homophobia on TikTok. As for Twitter, I only looked briefly, but I saw some Pridefall accounts there, as well as a lot of warnings and blocklists from people who are worried about it.
I’ve also heard that there have been a few Reddit and Discord raids, and that there is an Operation Pridefall Discord server (someone who spied on them says they have been banned on Discord as well as a platform called Riot before, so very few people are left on the Discord server now).
What do you think, Lia?
This is not coming from 4chan. No one on 4chan is interested anymore.
Most likely, people outside of 4chan heard about it and decided to take matters into their own hands.
The original 4chan thread wanted to make Pridefall “normie-palatable” by avoiding Nazi imagery or other overt unpleasantness, but I have seen a LOT of both on Instagram. This reinforces my belief that 4chan isn’t doing this.
A lot of the people behind this are young, or at least unsophisticated. Most of the Pridefall accounts on Instagram engage in very childish trolling, and one of them said they were a minor. Some of the threats I’ve seen are so outlandish that I can only imagine they came from a fairly young person.
My guess? Most of these people are around 13-19.
There are also very few of them and some of them probably have multiple accounts. Anti-Pridefall accounts outnumber them by far.
However, on Instagram I’ve seen Pridefall accounts following each other and commenting on each other’s posts, so there may be a few groups working together.
A lot of this shit is going to get deleted. I know Instagram is working through reports very slowly right now because they have fewer people available due to COVID-19, but most of the worst accounts I saw last night were deleted by this morning. I saw some more accounts deleted today.
Most, if not all, of these Pridefallers are just trying to scare us. Because they’re probably quite young, there’s very few of them, their accounts keep getting deleted, and law enforcement can track online activity, there is no way they have the balls or resources needed to coordinate major attacks.
There is a very, very slight chance this could spill over into real life, but as long as you practice basic online safety, you will be fine.
That being said, if you are threatened or doxxed by a Pridefall account, PLEASE contact the police. Better safe than sorry.
I do think that the threat of being doxxed or outed is more real than the threat of being attacked. I have already seen one Pridefall account who posted a trans boy’s address on Instagram (he is okay, he posted recently) and another who posted someone else’s address.
There is little chance this will last throughout Pride month. Apparently the goal is for Pridefall to worsen until the end of June, but given that this is most likely just some vastly outnumbered teenage trolls who are bored in quarantine, I seriously doubt they’ll be able to stay interested for a whole month.
This might not be as big on Tumblr. Tumblr is a lot more anonymous than, say, Instagram, which will hopefully deter would-be doxxers. It’s also known to be a highly liberal and queer-friendly site, so any Pridefaller with half a brain cell should know that A) their content is sure to be outnumbered and reported (only us Tumblr users know how bad staff is at deleting questionable stuff), and B) anyone with the original goal of “redpilling” is sure to fail here. Plus, I only remember seeing few, if any, mentions of Tumblr on Pridefall planning threads.
Still, expect to see some Pridefall activity here. Unsurprisingly, not all of these Pridefallers have half a brain cell. Some of them will definitely be unable to resist the lure of a community as openly queer as Tumblr, and we’ve all seen or heard about doxxing, harassment, gore, Nazis, and queerphobes on here. Also, 4chan has historically had some beef with Tumblr, so young teenage boys who idolize 4chan may target us for that reason.
How can I stay safe?
If you have any social media accounts where you A) have posted identifying personal information, and B) are openly supportive of the LGBTQ+ community (especially if you’re queer yourself), put them on private for June. Any other accounts are probably fine to stay public.
If you need a private Tumblr, you can make a password-protected secondary account and only share the password with mutuals you trust.
It is probably okay to be openly queer on a private account (e.g. have pronouns/rainbow emojis in your Instagram bio), since a private account is not likely to be doxxed. But if you want to be extra careful, remove queer identifiers from anything that is publicly visible.
Use Pridefall blocklists. They’re all over Instagram and Twitter. I may repost some here.
Report any Pridefall accounts you see. This is VERY important because this is how we can actually get rid of Pridefall content.
DON’T RESPOND TO ANY PRIDEFALLERS WHO PERSONALLY INTERACT WITH YOU. I know it’s tempting to give a snarky reply, but if they message you, comment on your post, etc, just block them. Seriously, don’t feed the trolls. It's exactly what they want.
Make sure your password game is strong. Use a different password for every site (I know, I know, it sucks), and use passwordmeter.com to test their strength. Write them all down on a piece of paper.
Make sure your username game is strong. Don’t use the same username for multiple sites, and avoid putting personal information in your username, such as your name or birthday.
Do NOT open random links!! Pridefallers could message you links that will give you viruses or track your IP address.
Don’t accept DMs or follows from people you don’t know. Pridefall accounts don’t always look like Pridefall accounts. Some of them are undercover.
Use a VPN. This is probably a little overkill unless you’re particularly at risk of being doxxed, but it will hide your IP address.
Be careful who you interact with. A lot of queer people on Instagram are DMing Pridefall accounts or commenting on their posts, but this could make you a target. As helpful as anti-Pridefall accounts are, you might even be targeted for following those.
Be wary of Pride tags. Unfortunately, a lot of Pridefall accounts plan to infiltrate tags commonly used by queer creators during Pride month. Use discretion when looking for queer content.
Be safe IRL. Lock your doors, lock your windows, be aware of your surroundings, don’t walk alone in poorly lit places, know basic self-defense, etc. Again, I absolutely do not think people will be attacked in real life, but you should be doing this shit all the time, not just in June. Thanks to COVID-19, you’re safer inside anyway!!
Make yourself hard to dox. Even though I have a very unusual first name (it's not really Lia), I am extremely hard to find online. I just went into an incognito browser window and searched my first and last name in quotation marks, but I didn’t find myself until page 4 of Google (and that result wasn’t even posted by me). I’m only half as careful as I could be, but here’s some of the things I do:
-I never use a picture of myself as my profile pic, except for Facebook and Instagram, which are both on the highest privacy settings possible.
-If I post identifying information on a public account (my college, my age, etc), I use a pseudonym or my first name only.
-On Instagram, I only use my first name, and I used special characters to type it, so you won’t find me if you search my name.
-On Facebook, I only accept friend requests from people I know. Most, if not all, of my Instagram followers are IRL friends, friends of IRL friends, and trusted Internet friends.
-If I’m really being paranoid, I’ll make a brand-new email account to sign up for a site. That way, my accounts aren’t all linked through one email address.
-Before I post a picture online, I delete the EXIF data with verexif.com, since EXIF data can hold GPS coordinates.
🌈 Stay safe, everyone.
You will not be harmed. You will be okay. Like cockroaches, we are survivors, and we will get through this!! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

Research Reflections, a Year Later
One last long theoretical text post for a while! We’re publishing this today instead of on Saturday because we owe you a Saturday post. (This is also why we published 4 daily study units in one night.)
The J-Sub Experiment is a research endeavor. We look at things, analyze them, share our findings, listen to what others have to say, record that data, and go look at new things, allowing the cycle to continue.
We’ve been at this for over a year, and really we only got going with any real moment around June of last year. Nevertheless, a lot has happened and a lot has changed.
We have always pledged to be transparent with our audience; and we believe that now is a good time just to touch base with all of you.
Objections
Naturally, we are constantly on the lookout for people who are objecting to what we say, no matter the nature of the objection. Only 1 person has consistently objected to what we have said. And this person is consistently correct in their objections, which are basically minor things and oversights on our part. We also had 1 person catch on to an error we made when talking about a phoneme.
Our theories have developed slowly over time. If you read what we’ve written from day 1 to now, we contradict each other on quite a few points. Nobody has brought this up, which does not necessarily mean that nobody has noticed, just that nobody has seen it worthwhile to bring it to our attention to clarify. We hope that this is because we’ve done a good job showing an organic changing of our position— demonstrating why we’d believe one thing a one point and why we believe something else at another.
Growth
We have changed blog names and changed themes; but the number of growth has remained generally the same, with only a slight increase in recent weeks. We gain on average 3 followers per day. Our new followers do not necessarily interact (like and reblog) with our material on a regular basis. Those who interact frequently with our posts are about 3% of our total followers, which are 1102 people.
On dontcallmesensei, when we only posted semi-personal things, we gained 81 followers from June 2016 to December 2016. From December 2016 to January 2017, we’ve gained 111 followers, in large part due to that blog hosting the Daily Japanese Study Units.
Interactions
We call “interaction” anything involving us asking or inviting our audience to send us asks, answer surveys, or anything that requires a response.
Our main project that required a response was our survey, which was overall a failure, although we thank everybody who contributed and we do have that information recorded and it has been helpful. At that time we had close to 1000 followers and we got 23 responses.
We have also posted ask games on dontcallmesensei before December, which nobody participated in.
We even asked people if they wanted to see us play a video game for a few minutes and nobody asked us for the link.
Our Patreon, which we provide links to in our Daily Study Units and are on our main blog, is not doing well. We have one $1 pledge, which we are incredibly grateful for; and we do remain optimistic that we will be able to turn this around. (And in case anybody is wondering, this isn’t something we do on the side. This is our job and our yearly income is based on what we can do with the materials we produce for The J-Sub Experiment as a platform.)
Our Facebook page has 2 likes from people who are not our friends. Our Twitter has 1 follower from Tumblr. Our Instagram has 0 followers who are not our friends.
This information actually does not bother us who work on material as much as it does our associates, who see Internet platforms as, by default, personality based. We are not personality based. People are here for the Japanese resources. Clearly nobody cares who we are, what our day-to-day looks like, and that’s completely fine as long as people are responding well to the materials we work so hard to produce.
Our model doesn’t depend on this kind of interaction existing, and even when we do become more popular and we get more likes and follows and all that on other social media platforms, it will always be a very small percentage of our total audience.
Audience
If what people write on their blogs’ profiles are true, and if everybody who answered the survey did so truthfully, then we know that our average follower is female, in her 20′s, not from the U.S., white, and at a basic level of Japanese, but with some real basis.
The trait of most immediate importance for us is the level of Japanese. If only people who were very advanced in their Japanese studies were reading our material, then that would indicate that people at the lower levels found us too complicated or confusing or at any rate not helpful. That is thankfully not the case. We imagine that beginners do not understand everything, but there is enough that they can get from it that they can get something out of it.
Our most popular posts, and the ones that get the most notes, are sporadic runthrough posts (which we cannot explain) and the linguistic posts that focus on one thing. Our Hiragana and Katakana post and our Ending Particle post are both doing very well, probably due to the fact that they are themes people recognize quickly (as opposed to phonemics and morae).
Our Daily Japanese Study Units are being reblogged consistently by a small group of people, but generally have a similar number of notes (about 20). Study Unit 11 is the most popular, with 70 notes.
Reflections
The profile image of dontcallmesensei is 尻, which means “butt,” and nobody has pointed that in a very long time.
Lots of our followers like FMA:B, but nobody has expressed a reaction (good or bad) to the fact that our next runthrough will be from that show.
We find that interactions work better when we provide a public response. So someone sends an ask and we answer it publicly. We suspect that our survey would have worked better had we done that, but we wanted to keep all that information confidential, even when the asks were anonymous.
We have a sizable amount of Spanish-speakers. We’ve considering writing something on Japanese-Spanish Spanish-Japanese translation.
A large part of the linguistics-themed blogs on Tumblr are focused on the humanities side of the field (like sociolinguistics), as opposed to what we focus on which is more scientific (in the sense that we just look at data and try to account for it in a systematic way). We have not heard anything from that humanities side, which really is of little importance.
Our associates have asked us to incorporate our personality into the platform. (We did run a personality-based blog once that did well.) But we’re very hesitant to do so. Personalities that are popular with one audience are not necessarily popular with another. That’s what has happened here. We have bigger priorities than to create  a personality (a large part of Internet personalities are not actual personalities, even if they look natural) to cater to this specific audience. Further, we believe that our audience will be more appreciative of the honesty and transparency in the long run.
In our posts, we’ve been insistent on a number of points that contradict traditional Japanese instruction: that adjectives in Japanese are very few; that -na adjectives are just nouns; that there aren’t two sets of verbs (u-verb and ru-verbs); that various particles are actually indicating grammatical case; that Kana-only texts are not helpful, even at the absolute beginner level.
Our Daily Study Units exist to show people that “expressions” are by and large just regular sentences on the syntactic level. (And “expressions” are the backbone of language textbooks.)
The fact that we say them so often and don’t have to double back on them (though the -na adjective thing is raising some questions, though they’re still nouns) makes us very happy; and what makes us happier is that people seem to see the logic behind it.
Conclusion (TL;DR): We are doing very well. We are not fighting an uphill battle against detractors. We have a growing audience. Our audience likes it when we focus on specific topics as well as our more instructional material. We do not have to compromise our linguistic perspective for any reason. If we do intend to grow and form something a bit more akin to a community, i.e. being able to interact with our audience in a mutually beneficial way, we will have to find a way to do that. That will be one of the big challenges of 2017.
We hope that this post serves as a testament to our transparency and honesty. Our values as a research endeavor and small business lie in respecting your privacy. We will never put a cookie on your browser to learn more about. We will never use marketing schemes to cheat you out of your money (and believe us, people have told us to.) Developing healthy communication is our job. Developing attractive products is our job. At the end of the day, this is about finding answers to big questions and serving each and every one of you.
