How I think marriage would look like in the boiling Isles.
First, marriage as an institution can NOT exist in the Boiling Isles if they are a Queer Utopia. Marriage is the way that society rewards coupled people, if you're single you're frown upon, don't have economic benefits, and sometimes it can even affect your job. Which means that for the aro-positive (tho aro ppl can be married) queer positive world of the boiling Isles this is completely contradictory.
HOWEVER partnerships that look like marriage do exist: odalia & Alador, Willow's parents.
What do I propose instead?
There's a magic ritual, that is not marriage but the closest they have to it.
Taking my inspiration from a soul mate au fic I read once. This ritual bounds souls in a way that the persons on it can feel the physical pain of the other (though in lesser afinity).
This bond can be between romantic and platonic relationships, BUT it needs the explicit consent of the members to work, if there isn't the magic does not work.
Also, I do think it is monogamy in its nature, in the sense that you can only be soul bond to one other person, 'cause you know, it would be agony other wise. However this bonds can fade or be broken with time (mainly when they are use by the people on them to hurt each other, or themselves).
I think this headcanon goes in hand with the Isles more gruesome way of doing things.
It would be a longer lasting version of Lilith's spell "with this spell I say let the pain be shared". Something like that.
And! That it would be perfect for raeda. Because now both Eda & Raine have to care for themselves unless they want their lover to suffer.
For two witches that don't care much about their well being (though eda is starting to realize that her well-being correlates to the one of her family) it would be the perfect excuse to exercise some healthcare.
Lumity I think will be something like Amity proposes because "Luz you have to take care of yourself for titans sake." And Luz would go with it because is the type of fanficy stuff she likes (plus I do think she would love to be "married" in a magical world).
Huntlow though I don't think they would ever do it. Mostly because of Hunter but Willow would understand.
Darius and Eberwolf are soulbonded and in a qpr no one can change my mind.
Willows parents are soulbonded too.
Is ALSO a good vessel for angst jsjsj.

Hi! I hope you're doing well! I'd love to know about you WIPs, if you're comfortable sharing. You can say anything and everything! Also what are some lines that you are proud of?
Hi! Thanks for the ask ^^ I want to ramble a bit about The ritual, the most controversial of my WIPs. I mostly talk about pain and racism, but later on I decided to add some more topics such as abortion, euthanasia and queer rights (all things my government is trying to remove/change), just to stir the pot and make people think. It's still a light novel, with some smut, but the last part may hit hard. The inspiration came from a dream where I was in a cave, chased by someone, when I woke up I still felt the dread of the chase lingering in my mind, so I decided to write about it.
The setting is a peninsula where five tribes reside, each with its own unique culture and distinctions. Every few years, a wedding is arranged among these tribes. Renewa is the sole healer of the Marriet tribe, and she has been selected for a marriage with a member of the Garrier, the hunters — the most fierce and ruthless tribe. She's compelled to participate in a sacred ritual, yet she is unaware of its nature. All she knows is that the man she's destined to marry might be a wild force she needs to tame, or else she risks being overwhelmed by him. In addition, all the women from the Marriet have perished during this ritual with the Garrier. Some believe it's a deliberate act to maintain the purity of their lineage. If she ever manages to survive, she'll still struggle with being accepted by the tribe, and the fact that she's a non conventional healer, may not play in her favor. Here's a snippet of it, the translation may not be as good as the original (sorry):
That [removed] was a test for both of them: she was the prey and he was the hunter.
[Removed]’s purpose was to force them both toward the mating cave, this was the brutal ritual of the Garrier clan — a rite that excited their warriors and pushed them toward unfathomable violence.
She could almost feel the echoes of screams of all the poor young girls who were forced into it, their eyes wide with pleas for mercy that were left unanswered. But Renewa did not want to be caught, she did not want to die, and she would do anything to escape and hide, even though she had never been particularly athletic, she had to be able to avoid that torture as long as possible.
She shuddered, feeling goosebumps forming on her neck while a cold rush of air reached behind her. She could distinctly feel her heartbeats speeding up and her primal survival instincts pushing her legs move.
So she began to run, even when she tasted blood in her mouth, even when she struggled to hold her breath any longer.
She had to run.

Call of Cthulhu by HP. Lovecraft
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqIxCqayQok&list=LLA7itL_HoGpsUJLAI_oa0hQ&index=23&t=4577s
I’ve now had repeat listens of this audiobook. To summarize the Call of Cthulhu is presented as a manuscript, narrated by Francis Wayland Thurston of Boston as he recounts the notes left behind by his grand-uncle, George Gammell Angell, a professor of Semitic languages at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, who died suddenly in the winter 1926-7.
Part 1: The Horror Clay.
The first part concerns a small bas-relief sculpture found among the manuscript, which the narrator describes “ my somewhat extravagant imagination yielded simultaneous pictures of an octopus, a dragon, and a human caricature […]A pulpy tentacled head surmounted a grotesque and scaly body with rudimentary wings”. The sculpture is the work of Henry Anthony Wilcox, a student of the Rhode Island School of Design who based his work on his dreams of “great cyclopean cities of titan blocks and sky flung monoliths, all dripping with green ooze and sinister with latent horror”. These images are associated in dreams with the words Cthulhu and R’lyeh. Wilcox’s dreams began on March 1, 1925, culminating in a period from March 23 until April 2 when Wilcox was in a state of delirium. During the same period, Angell’s notes revealed that there were similar cases of delirium and group folly or mania around the world - from Paris and London, Africa and South America, Philippines, Western Ireland and India. New York and California.
Part 2: The Tale of Inspector Legrasse.
The second part of the story begins with Angell’s notes revealing that he had heard the word Cthulhu and seen a similar image much earlier. At the 1908 meeting of the American Archaeological Society in St. Louis, Missouri, a New Orleans police officer named John Raymond Legrasse had asked for assistance in identifying a statuette, made of unidentifiable greenish black stone, that hade been captured months before in the wooded swamps south of New Orleans during a raid on a supposed voodoo meeting and held an identical resemblance  to the figure depicted in Wilcox’s bas-relief. On November 1, 1907, Legrasse had led a party in search of several women and children who disappeared from a squatter community. The police found the victims oddly marred bodies being used in a ritual the centered around the statuette in a ring of fire with around 100 men - all of a very low, mixed blooded and mentally aberrant type, all chanting the phrase “Ph’nglui mglw’nafh Cthulhu R’lyeh wgah’nagl fhtagn.” After killing five and arresting 47 others, Legrasse interrogated the prisoners and learned “the central idea of their loathsome faith”. The prisoners identified the statuette as “great Cthulhu” and translated the phrase as “In his house at R’lyeh dead Cthulhu waits dreaming.” One of the academics queried by Legrasse, William Channing Webb, a professor of anthropology at Priceton University, points out that he had encountered, “high up on the West Greenland coast” a similar phenomenon on an 1860 expedition: “a singular tribe or cult of degenerates whose religion, a curious form of devil-worship, chilled him with it’s deliberate bloodthirstiness and repulsiveness.” Webb said that the Greenland cult had both the same chant and a similar hideous fetish. Thurston then notes that this point of the investigation, “My attitude was still of absolute materialism, as I wish it still were.”
Part 3: The Madness from the Sea.
The third and final part of the story, Thurston extends the inquiry into the “Cthulhu Cult” beyond what professor Angel discovered. He discovers by chance and article from the Sydney Bulletin, an Australian newspaper, for April 18, 1925, that reported the discovery of a derelict ship in the pacific ocean with only one survivor - Norwegian sailor Gustaf Johansen, second mate on the schooner Emma out of Auckland, New Zealand, which on March 22 encountered a heavily armed yacht, the Alert, crewed by “a queer and evil looking crew of Kanakas and half-castes” from Dunedin, New Zealand. The Alert attacked without provocation and despite the crew of Emma losing their ship, they managed to board the opposing ship and kill all their attackers. The article then went on to say that the survivors encountered an island the next day, even though there are no charted islands in that area. Most of the remaining crew died on the island, but Johansen is said to be “queerly reticent” about there cause of death. Thurston realizes from the article that the crew of the Alert was connected to the Cthulhu Cult, and travels, first to New Zealand, then to Australia (where he sees a statue retrieved from the Alert with a "cuttlefish head, dragon body, scaly wings, and hieroglyphed pedestal") and finally to Oslo, where he learns that Johansen died suddenly after an encounter with "two Lascar sailors". When Johansen's widow gives Thurston a manuscript written in English that her husband left behind, the narrator learns of the crew's discovery of the uncharted island which is described as "a coastline of mingled mud, ooze, and weedy Cyclopean masonry which can be nothing less the tangible substance of earth's supreme terror — the nightmare corpse-city of R'lyeh."Exploring the risen land, which is "abnormal, non-Euclidian, and loathsomely redolent of spheres and dimensions apart from ours," the sailors manage to open a "monstrously carven portal," and from the newly opened depths It lumbered slobberingly into sight and gropingly squeezed Its gelatinous green immensity through the black doorway. The stars were right again, and what an age-old cult had failed to do by design, a band of innocent sailors had done by accident. After vigintillions of years great Cthulhu was loose again, and ravening for delight. Thurston (or Johansen) writes that "The Thing cannot be described," though the story does call it "the green, sticky spawn of the stars," and refers to its "flabby claws" and "awful squid-head with writhing feelers." Hinting at its scale, the story says, "A mountain walked or stumbled" (this is corroborated by Wilcox's dreams, which "touched wildly on a gigantic thing 'miles high' which walked or lumbered about"). Johansen manages to get back to the yacht; when Cthulhu, hesitantly, enters the water to pursue the ship, Johansen turns the Alert around and rams the creature's head, which bursts with "a slushy nastiness as of a cloven sunfish" — only to immediately begin reforming as Johansen and William Briden (insane, and soon dead) make their escape. After reading this manuscript, Thurston ends his own narrative on a pessimistic note: "Loathsomeness waits and dreams in the deep, and decay spreads over the tottering cities of men." He assumes that he will soon meet the fate of Angell and Johansen: "I know too much, and the cult still lives." He also thinks that Cthulhu, whilst restoring his broken head, was dragged down again with the sinking city, thus keeping humanity safe until the next time, when the stars are right.
END.

What are your favorite tropes? Anything particular that you like extra much? And are there any tropes that you're also not particular fond of, and/or rubs you the wrong way? Just curious. I hope you'll have a good weekend. Sends hugs!
Hi anon!
I actually did a ‘tropes I like and nope tropes’ post a while back and dug that up.
And I wrote more recently about tropes I really love here.
Recently I realised I really don’t like soul mate tropes. Anything to do with like the ‘red string of fate’ or people with ‘matching numbers’ or glyphs or marks or whatever, can’t really stand it. I don’t mind people in a relationship calling each other soul mates once they’ve realised a profound love for each other, but I don’t like AUs / universes where soul mates are a thing. Tbh I find it squicky.
On the other hand I really like forced soulbonds, mostly to explore consent issues, lol.
I really like: ‘character is in jeopardy/pain/anguish but no one else really sees it or takes it seriously until they’re forced to and then suddenly feel guilty/regret/remorse and pile on the comfort’ trope. I’m sort of hoping to explore that a bit in The Golden Age. We’ve already seen a little bit of it, but I’d like to just...do that more. Lol. It was heaps of fun to do that in The Court of Five Thrones re: Gwyn finding out what happened with the Raven Prince. Like, he went from kind of supporting Augus but always sort of holding back his trust too, to just full out being like ‘if anyone criticises Augus in my Court again based on what happened in the past let me know so I can murder them yes Gulvi I mean you.’
But yeah I don’t...really know? I don’t sort of...I don’t search by theme very often. I don’t search for fics by trope. I actually just sort of filter by ‘Explicit’ (it’s mostly likely to have the content I want, though Mature can too) and if I really like a pairing, I’ll read just about everything except mpreg (even then there’s exceptions like I do have some mpreg Loki fics bookmarked - they usually revolve around hurt/comfort though) and um...marriage fics. Anything that starts with ‘X and X are getting married and’ - makes me want to throw up a little bit, unless it’s like ‘X and X are getting married and then X is abducted and tortured and they forget about an archaic misogynistic ritual in favour of massive amounts of recovery and hurt/comfort.’
But you know I’ve never seen that summary before. ;)
Also as time goes by, I’m finding het fics increasingly squicky. I think what it is, is being queer and knowing how damaged I’ve been by the pervasiveness of heterosexuality and heteronormativity, it is currently really hard to divorce myself from my cynicism and bitterness over that when I see how much it just oversaturates the media. So I no longer read het fanfiction, and I have noticed a tendency to avoid it in fiction in general (though it can’t be helped sometimes). That’s less of a trope? But I suspect it’s also a temporary response to the state of society and the state of fictional media. Once I feel like it’s less of a fight or struggle just to get queer romance recognised, or queer SFF recognised not as a niche ‘LGBTQIA genre’ so much as its own valid series of contributions to large genres, I’ll probably be able to handle that again.
Likewise, regardless of theme, I’m more likely to give something a try if it features ace characters, or similar. These days, I’ve been exploring what it is to be a gray asexual writer, who essentially kind of ‘specialises’ in specific kinds of explicit material, especially BDSM material. I’ve been thinking more and more about making it more evident that a lot of the characters I write are generally aspecs in some fashion or another (Cullen in Stuck on the Puzzle is absolutely demisexual, and I feel you could make a good case for Gwyn ap Nudd being the same, and also demiromantic -> Mosk will be demisexual, and of course the Raven Prince is on the ace spectrum). Asexuality is highly underrepresented, and it’s a - in some circles on Tumblr - hated upon frontier in the world right now, and as someone who identified as bisexual for a very long time before I knew that ‘gray asexuality’ existed, I feel that inter-LGBTQIA persecution in my soul.
Eh that’s probably more theme? I admit, anon, my fannish vernacular when it comes to tropes is not that great. On the one hand I have a huge familiarity with AO3 tags and fanfiction tags, and can generally tell you what I think of every single one if you put it towards me. But it’s hard for me to remember those, and they don’t always equate with the same kind of tropes you’d find on say...TV Tropes. I’m not involved in the meta of those semantics, so it’s hard for me to think from scratch what I enjoy, vs. say...scrolling through a page of fics and being like ‘no I don’t like that’ or ‘yes I’m likely to like that’ or etc. If you had any tropes in mind that I didn’t address here, feel free to ask specifically! :D
Oh, I forgot, I really love a/b/o, to the point where I’m currently writing an original fiction series that centres on both celebrating and subverting these tropes. :D My ‘Perth shifters’ series. I’m hoping to get book one finished (and maybe even published) this year.
