TV: The Roof (2022)

Ya el largometraje "Wildhood" (2021), reseñado anteriormente en este blog, nos acercaba al concepto de "berdache" o "dos espíritus", muy ligado a los pueblos aborígenes norteamericanos, según el cual una persona, independientemente de su género, asumía patrones de conducta femeninos y masculinos.

Eso es lo que parece sucederle a Ray (Phoenix Wilson), un adolescente que llega a la casa de su abuelo (Wes Studi), a quien ve arreglado el techo y, aparentemente, no escuchándole. Ambos provienen del pueblo cheyene y más pronto que tarde el anciano nota que el muchacho se ha pintado las uñas de un notorio esmalte plateado (razón por la cual ha recibido conflictivas respuestas de sus compañeros de colegio) y se atavía con un vestido de su abuela, lo cual lo impulsa a acercársele para compartir algo que su nieto desconocía sobre la cultura de la que forma parte.

"The Roof" ("El tejado") forma parte de "Lunchpad", una serie de cortometrajes estrenados en Disney Plus que versa sobre la variedad cultural estadounidense. Ya hemos tenido en este espacio un ejemplo de esta serie en el cortometraje "The Little Prince(ss)" (2021) y aquí se vuelve a la temática LGBTQ. El director Alexander Bocchieri y el guionista W.A.W. Parker, él mismo un cheyene y "Dos Espíritus", elaboran un cuanto sobre el legado generacional de una cultura aborigen tan esencial como estadounidense.

When #TheLastOfTheMohicans directed by @michaelmannofficial was released in 1⃣9⃣9️⃣2️⃣, I didn't think that a piece of classic literature could be so engaging. The most commercial film that #DanielDayLewis starred in, he played frontier hero Hawkeye opposite the stunning beauty of #MadeleineStowe. It had beautiful cinematography, a great score, and the story was rooted in the 1⃣8️⃣2️⃣6️⃣ novel of #JamesFenimoreCooper. #WesStudi was a fearsome villain as the bloodthirsty Huron warrior Magua. My other favorite films of 2022, Park Chan-wook’s beautiful romantic mystery Decision to Leave, Kogonada’s stunningly made After Yang w amazing performance by Colin Farrell, Terrence Davies’ underrated and unseen Benediction about Siegfried Sassoon, played by Jack Lowden as a profound British poet and WWI veteran who was hospitalized because of his anti war stance, and tragically had to hide his gay love life. The remarkably witty and funny Nicholas Stoller’s Bros, one of the most funny, smart, and well made gay romances produced by the great Judd Apatow, with wonderful Billy Eichner, Luke MacFarlane. Laura Poitras’ brilliant All the Beauty and the Bloodshed examines the life and career of photographer and activist, Nan Goldin and her efforts to hold Purdue Pharma accountable for the opioid epidemic. Panah Panahi’s touching, and hilarious Hit the Road, a comedy-drama about an Iranian family driving to the Turkish border to immigrate their young adult son out of the country. Max Walker-Silverman’s A Love Song about two older childhood friends who share a night in the Colorado mountains features beautiful performances by Dale Dickey and Wes Studi, a film about real people who have lived their lives without glamour, or luck and how they have continued in spite of life. Finally, S. S.
