Hey! I’m a big fan of your work.

Do you think any of the Harrington girls ever try out dna testing kits? Either to find relatives or just know heritage/potential heath issues. Could be an emotional minefield tbh.

short answer is: yes, the girls definitely do dna kits (as should all adoptees but that’s just my opinion, i suppose)

the longer answer is that the girls decide (without any input from their dads, who didn’t even know about this discussion) to wait until all three of them are 18 so that all three of them can get their results at the same time.

steve is perfectly fine with them waiting, not because he has anything against his kids learning about their heritage, but because he’s very much anti-companies collecting/storing his personal info. He won’t join facebook, refuses to get an alexa (he even has siri disabled on his phone), and definitely doesn’t love the idea of a corporation having his dna, so he kind of needed the time to get past the alarm bells going off in his head about his daughters’ safety in that regard.

he does get past it though, and steve and eddie buy the kits as an 18th birthday gift to hazel in september of 2024. eight weeks later, they get the results.

the ancestry composition is interesting, of course, and steve and eddie get at least some relief from the health profiles because that had always been a total mystery to them.

the girls end up learning that they really don't have much extended family on their mom’s side, which isn’t really a surprise — that’s how moe ended up in foster care to begin with — but it still is disappointing given that their mom died when they were little and they all had questions about her that they hoped could get answered someday.

the big surprise is that moe has a different bio-dad from robbie and hazel, which…does not go over well, understandably.

on the whole, it's not exactly a joyous experience, per se, but it never was going to be. kids don't enter the foster system for no reason, and parental rights don’t get terminated for shits and giggles. steve and eddie saw it as their responsibility to be as upfront about the circumstances of their daughters’ adoption as they were allowed to be (and as was age-appropriate), so the girls were prepared for the results being, at a minimum, complicated.

still, the Harrington family vibes are off for a while after they get the results.

I often take for granted that i spent YEARS learning the basics (and i mean the basics) of power and oppression. i had to learn because i was a dialogue facilitator about these conversations (white supremacy and racism, patriarchy and misogyny, heterosexism and homophobia). I aint no where near sophisticated and i still have a lot to learn. but some of the concepts i see the average person struggle with leaves me baffled.

i kinda think we need more of these basic 101 talks again. but i lost all patience (or maybe i never have any). how many times do we have to go over a concept i've discoursed(legit discourse, not derogatory) to death in 2012? especially if the concept is rooted in my humanity??? AHCK

Felt bad I've left this ask hanging for so long, just haven't had the energy to go on a great big spiel about what I think. I still don't but I'll try to give a simple enough answer!

I say Suneo being queer coded, even before the Halloween episode, is very in line with how Disney would queer code their villains. Many old characters are like this, but Disney has the most prominent and well known examples so that's what I'm using.

If you've seen Aladdin, Jafar is a character who clearly presents in a certain manner and yet is not verbally said or shown to be attracted to the same sex. Instead, he's attracted to Jasmine. While one would think this dismisses the theory entirely, it reinforces due to the unfortunate history of how being gay was seen as predatory.

I'm not comparing Suneo to that specifically, but more so that a character being queer coded can still mean a contradiction within. Hence, episodes or movies where Suneo likes a girl doesn't erase that characterization.

There's a complicated history in queer coding and gay characters, and most of it is not positive. We are often meant to laugh at effeminate behavior in boys and men, a trait Suneo has come to have in spades. Often played for a joke, if I could gesture at scenes where he bats his eyes at other male characters and the reaction is negative, etc.

Essentially what I'm getting at, is I think Suneo follows 'non-explicit' queer coding. To take from what the wiki says on the topic, as it nicely sums up what I mean: 'Queer coding is the subtextual coding of a character in media as queer. Though such a characters sexual identity may not be explicitly confirmed within their respective work or they may in fact be straight despite their queer mannerisms, a character might be coded as queer through the use of traits and stereotypes recognizable to the audience. Such traits are greatly varied, but traits of exaggerated masculinity and femininity, vanity, and hypersexuality are frequent.'

Barring a trait like the last one, vanity, femininity, even the tendency for flamboyance often makes up traits Suneo tends to have. It makes it easy to see queerness within him, thus relate or otherwise. It's not even those traits in themself that makes it that way, but how it is all presented.

Last thing I'll say: while coding can be unintentional, it's the potential of preexisting bias or ideas underneath that makes it reality.

How to deal with guiltiness while in grief?

hi love, I’m so sorry that you’re in this position right now, sending you so much love and support. I’m not too familiar with grief, so please take this with a pinch of salt, but I know it really is a process to get through grief and live with loss.

regarding guilt, it could be worth exploring where that guilt is coming from - through journaling or through talking to someone (preferably who knows the situation). sometimes we can end up blaming ourselves for things outside of our control, which can end up causing a lot of unjustified harm. I think it’s also important to keep in mind that we can’t change the past, we can only learn from it and move forwards. so if something went wrong, you could think about how to make that less likely to happen in the future?

just some thoughts from me. if anyone reading this has any advice, please share! all I can say anon is I wish you all the best in this difficult time. I love you <3
