Thinking about how HOTD is really a story about mothers in the end. Fatherhood seems to be absent. Laenor isn’t there. Viserys isn’t there. Harwin can’t be there. Daemon is there but really isn’t. Corlys was deprived of his fatherhood with Laena then Laenor then Luke. Otto blurs the lines between father and husband until they become inseparable. They may be waging the war for their children but when have they ever been there for those children?

In the end, all there are are mothers. Everything they do, they do in service to, in overwhelming love for their children. Rhaenyra wages war not just for her own claim but for the life of her sons and the life that could have been for her daughter. Alicent starts that war out of sheer horror of what she thinks might happen to her own children, the only ones she has left in this life. Rhaenys ends up sacrificing herself for the future of her granddaughters, the only children she has left. Helena tries to make the most painless choice possible for her babies, even though her own pain is immeasurable. They would give up everything for their children. They would give up themselves for their children. If the world had been burned to the ground, but their children were safe, then that would be okay. Everything in this story can be traced back to mothers and the choices they make for their children.
