Names, particles, aliens and ghosts, oh my!

Disclaimer: not a native Thai speaker, still learning 🙏

Ongsa & Alpha

Last week's episode started with the trio talking about the sisters' names:

Nunnapat Ampornsopon /Nan-na-phat Am-phaawn-soh-phohn/ Matthayom 4, class 6 (=10th grade) English

While we see this, Tin tells us Alpha's name too:

Napatsanun Ampornsopon นภัสนันท์ อัมพรโสภณ /Na-phat-sa-nan Am-phaawn-soh-phohn/

Her and Ongsa's first names have the exact same two words in them, just switcheroo'd:

นันท์ /nan/ = joy, happiness;

นภัส /na phat/ = sky, heaven

-> Quick pronunciation lesson: The final consonant in นภัส /na phat/ is called ส เสือ /saw seuua/ (= lit. S like the word for tiger) but in final position it's pronounced as a /t/. In Alpha's name, that same letter gets reduplicated to better link นภัส /na phat/ and นันท์ /nan/ so we get Napat-sa-nun!

Their last name Ampornsopon contains:

อัมพร /am phaawn/ = sky;

โสภณ /soh phohn/ = beautiful

Aylin

Her club application form was only shown in a Next Break preview last week, not the actual scene, but I wanted to take a look at it anyway:

Aylin is her first name, her last name is เกื้ออารีย์ /geuua aa ree/:

เกื้อ /geuua/ = to aid, do a favor, assist, lend a hand;

อารีย์ /ah ree/ = kind, generous

We saw her name properly this week, too, in the document she hilariously designed, wrote up, and filled out by hand:

I've mentioned before that the subs are a bit too generous and don't quite show how much Aylin limits her speech to the minimum she needs to get her point across. One thing that consistently gets subbed is how she differentiates between aliens and humans. But not every instance of human is the same. She does seem to differentiate between general observations about human behavior and specific humans she talks to, now even addressing them appropriately (albeit with the 'human' descriptor).

1) มนุษย์ครูใจร้าย /ma noot khruu jai raai/ = [You] are mean, teacher human. 2) มันเป็นหนทางที่เอเลี่ยนจะได้เจอเพื่อนนะ /man bpen hon thaang thee alien ja dai juuhr pheuuan na/

มนุษย์ชอบถามแปลก ๆ /ma noot chaawp thaam bplaaek bplaaek/ = Humans like to ask weird questions.

1) มนุษย์พี่เคยบอกเอง ว่าเรื่องที่เชื่อไม่ใช่เรื่องที่ไร้สาระ /ma noot phi koei baawk ehng - waa reuuang thee cheuua mai chai reuuang thee rai saa ra/ = [You] said so [your]self, senior human - that what [I] believe in isn't nonsense. 2) ทำไมมนุษย์ชอบกลับคำพูด /tham mai ma noot chaawp glap kham phuut/ = Why do humans like to go back on their word?

Luna, Mawin, and Ton

Thanks again, Tin, for helpfully giving us all the names lol:

Luna Lalita Chanthaboriboon ลูน่า ลลิตา จันทบริบูรณ์ /Luu-naa La-lee-dtaa Jan-tha-baw-ree-buun/

Luna is her nickname, her first name Lalita ลลิตา means pretty, charming, lovely, and her last name จันทบริบูรณ์ contains:

จันท /jan tha/ from จันทร์ /jan/ = moon;

บริบูรณ์ /baw ree buun/ = complete, full, perfect, abundant

พี่เป็นดวงจันทร์ต่างหาก /phi bpen duuang jan dtaang haak/

Moving on to the boys-

Mawin Kow(a)charoen มาวิน โค้วเจริญ /Maa-win Khoh(-wa)-ja-reern/ -> the added 'wa' would be for the same ease-of-pronunciation reason I explained earlier with Alpha's name

Mawin isn't a Thai name but his last name โค้วเจริญ consists of:

โค้ว* likely from หมูโค้ว /moo khoh/? = a pork belly dish

เจริญ /ja reern/ = the same as Charoen's name, meaning to pray/chant, to prosper, to thrive

Edit, addition by @recentadultburnout:

Based on the usual pattern, the *โค้ว in the surname โค้วเจริญ is likely a Chinese surname that got incorporated into a Thai one. โค้ว is one of the top ten most used ones among Chinese surnames in Thailand. As for [his first name] มาวิน, while it was indeed not originally Thai, it did have a meaning—a borrowed word plus slang of sorts. A winner or to win.

Ton Thanakorn Khajornyoo ต้น ธนกร ขจรอยู่ /Dtohn Tha-na-gaawn Kha-jaawn-yuu/

His first name ธนกร /tha na gaawn/ = to create assets/capital; rich, wealthy

His nickname Ton ต้น might stem haha from the plant (ต้น)ขจร /(dtohn) kha jaawn/, a type of vine. ต้น /dtohn/ is a prefix used for plants but it can also mean leader, chief, leading, beginning, etc.

His last name ขจรอยู่ /kha jawn yuu/ = is spread/spreading, emanating, diffusing

An addendum about Ton

Last week, I wondered if maybe Ton was a closeted gay guy because of a handful of instances where AJ's delivery of the typically-female polite ending particles ค่ะ/คะ /kha/ sounded pretty sassy (and because he's Ongsa's ex aka the biggest lesbian under the sun lol). After episode three, I'm pretty sure he's just a huge flirt with everyone regardless of gender, he just adjusts his particle use (and also his height!) accordingly to sweet-talk them all:

1) ว่าไงครับสุดหล่อ /waa ngai khrap soot laaw/ -> ครับ /khrap/ = typically-male polite ending particle 2) แต่คุณแอลคะ /dtaae khun Al kha/ -> คะ /kha/ = typically-female polite ending particle

And since he finger-guns his way into the student council room, I think we all know now that he's bi

"Filth-eating spirit"

A Krasue is a type of evil spirit that possesses women and, when going out to hunt, leaves the body behind to be a floating head with internal organs still attached. It's translated as 'filth-eating' because a Krasue is cursed to feed on blood, organs, carrion etc. Ton calls the mysterious green light แสงกระสือ /saaeng gra seuu/ (=light of a Krasue) because sightings of a Krasue usually report them looking like a floating red or green orb. In that regard, they're comparable to will-o'-the-wisps!

THE PROBLEM WITH FABLE is a video essay uploaded to YouTube on November 19, 2023. Despite being the channel’s only video, it was quickly picked up by the recommendation algorithm and gained nearly half a million views in its first week. The half-hour video examines and critiques Fable’s concept. Sentiments in the comment section were almost evenly split between agreeing with the video’s premise, and 2000-word essays about how it's wrong. Three days after the video was uploaded, the comment section was disabled.

CHAPTERS AND SELECTED EXCERPTS

THESIS STATEMENT [00:37 - 1:04] … The problem with Fable has always existed. It’s built into their concept—the very foundation of any group. A single concept doesn’t have to be a bad thing, if a group can properly execute and then push the boundaries and truly explore their concept. Fable does none of that. They get on stage in their hanboks only to perform pop song 8265734—now with gayageum.

THE ONLY GOOD PARTS (WHEN THE QUALITY IS BAD?) [03:42 - 6:29] … Before we get further into the bad, there are two—and only two—parts of their Korean concept that make sense. First, Korea has become such a large part of their image that all of their endorsements and brand deals are with South Korean companies. Hell will freeze over before a single Fable member represents a Western brand or product. Second, their dedication to Korean song titles is unmatched. In a surprising power move, Zenith Entertainment usually refuses to provide English translations.

PROBLEM #1 [6:30 - 15:44] … The greatest problem with Fable's concept is their inconsistency. It's been five years and they can't make up their minds about what they want to represent. They cherry pick what they want to represent. An instrument here or an outfit there. Slap a traditionally significant symbol—tiger, magpie, persimmon—on the album cover and call it a day.

For Fable, Korea exists in a bubble, which is obviously not the case, eschewing centuries of cultural mingling throughout East Asia. Their album titles are sajaseongeo—four character idioms—with roots in Chinese chengyu and similar to Japanese yojijukugo. Far from unique. For another example, Confucianism plays a major role not in their music, but in their variety shows and other content. As the state religion and governing philosophy throughout the Joseon dynasty, it was obviously highly influential on traditional Korean culture and eventually Fable. But in their promotion of the ideology, they miss out on swaths of history. While Confucianism’s five constant relationships permeated every social class, philosophy and learning were restricted to the upper class yangban. Which of course, Fable loves to represent themselves as. They’re always kings and noblemen and scholars—without a single mention of the common people.

Aside from ignoring social class, they also ignore half the population—women. It was, for lack of a better word, shitty to be a woman in Confucian society, and it continues to be shitty to be a woman in a society still strongly influenced by Confucian values. And yet Fable glorifies this past, where women were subservient to fathers and husbands and sons and not much more than property. To make matters worse, they do this all in front of an audience of teenage girls and young women. It’s doubtful that the people in charge of Fable’s creative direction and marketing have ever felt the touch of a woman.

PROBLEM #2 [15:45 - 22:39] … While Fable hasn’t figured out what they’re representing, they’ve certainly figured out who’s doing the representing. The treatment of their two diaspora members—gyopo, dongpo, whatever term you want to use—stands out from the treatment of the rest of the group. Andrew has expressed his frustration with not being able to participate in the group’s music as much as he wants to. And then there’s Mingeun. It’s impossible to talk about Fable without talking about Mingeun’s scandal at the peak of their career, when it was revealed that he had pretended to be a South Korean national for two years. That supposed secret alone should make it obvious that when it comes to the two of them, something is different. It speaks volumes about their goals as a group—fully Korean, for Korea, to the point where even diasporan Koreans don’t belong.

In an ironic twist, their refusal to entertain anyone other than “pure” Koreans becomes even more representative of contemporary Korean society. As the nation’s economy becomes increasingly more globalized, its social attitudes still remain firmly in the past. In Fable’s single-minded focus on Korean history, they continue to perpetrate such ideas. While one kpop group is not going to solve racism in South Korea—an issue deeply entrenched in their hermit kingdom past and the years under Japanese occupation—it becomes hypocritical for them to work so hard to export their culture while being intolerant of others.

CULTURAL REPRESENTATIVES [22:40 - 27:03] … No exploration of Fable’s concept and marketing would be complete without a mention of their nickname. In 2021, they became known as the “cultural representatives of kpop” by netizens. They've seemingly embraced the nickname since, if the way they've never switched up their concept is any indication. Which begs the question: why are they so intent on this direction? Kpop—with its idol culture inspired by Japan’s idol industry and the very industry inspired by the American one—is distinctly un-Korean. Kpop is instead a hybridization of cultures, with musical genres invented by Black Americans and its commodification of art invented by American capitalists. If Fable is really so intent on representing traditional Korean culture, then where’s the pansori song or sijo lyrics? Being the nugu face of the tourism industry—next to much bigger groups like BTS and Blackpink—is not enough. They need to do something other than appear in a Korean Air commercial and gush about how nice Jeju Island is at this time of the year.

SMASH THAT LIKE BUTTON [27:04 - 29:12] … The inconsistency and hypocrisy of Fable’s concept does more harm than good. They promote a glorified version of history completely inaccurate to the actual past to impressionable young people and kpop stans incapable of thinking for themselves.

WATT Week 2023 starts on July 25th and ends July 31st, the day of the WATT reunion concert! (Hence the final day’s prompt) You can do all of the prompts, or just one if you want! Tiger & Bunny Week Day 2 🐯🐰

Tiger & Bunny 1st series Anniversary 🥂

I know this show has been out for quite some time now, but to be honest, I never got into it until the end of 2022/beginning of 2023! Originally, I remember when it first came out, me at the ripe age of 15 thinking 'Tiger and Bunny huh. Yeah that sounds like some cute moe-stuff. eh.' How wrong I was XD I was definitely under prepared getting into the show lol. Essentially a good friend of mine said 'This is like X otp but with superheroes! You gotta watch it!!' So I did, and now it's like, wow this has consumed me 😂

It had so much more depth than I thought it would. There is so much world building, character building, plot moving, petty banter and witty humor, low-stakes adventures and high-stakes predicaments that keep you coming back for more! And! While it's an anime, it doesn't have a lot of those common anime tropes that you expect in most shows. It's impactful and funny and charged with action and every character is designed and fleshed out so thoroughly and uniquely. No one has 'anime same-face', it's gorgeous.

Even major details are played out merely through a character's eyes alone:

Like this, when Barnaby states he doesn't like fire. The detail they took to not add a highlight in his eyes, like he's lost in a terrible thought.

2. They way they animate Barnaby crying even with his hero suit on.

3. In the same episode vein, exactly how Kotetsu looks after he says he knew Barnaby would trust him.

4. the detail alone in Jake's face here. When was the last time you saw an anime studio individually draw out a character's teeth?

5. and Maverick's expression here. Glowing blue eyes as we can see Barnaby's reflection in his glasses and you know something unsettling is about to occur.

The designs and expressions of these characters is amazing and unlike any I've seen before.

Deborah Jane Leng Burgess is a model and actress, and Roger met her on the set of his side band The Cross' video-clip "Cowboys and Indians" (1987). She next appeared as the masked lady in Queen’s “Breakthru”. Debbie started her modeling under the artistic name of Debbie Du-Bell in 1982, and represented the UK in the 1986 edition of Supermodel of the World. She created a sensation in 1987 when she became the iconic Cadbury's Flake girl in a TV commercial and got axed three years later for being "too sexy".

Roger and Debbie’s relationship was immediately object of interest for tabloids, especially since he married his previous girlfriend Dominique in 1988 to secure their two children and the media didn't understand their relationship was actually over, and Roger he soon moved in a new mansion with Debbie. Another object of scandal was the alleged diffusion of a sex tape between the two, and the media never failed to point out their age difference of 14 years. The drummer of a world famous band and a beautiful supermodel couldn’t stay out of the spotlight, after all...

However, besides often appearing together at events, concerts and parties, looking dashing and rich, what happened privately in their lives seems to remain very private. (short to say I’m not really finding much out there besides gossip articles mentioned above). Of course, Debbie is a beautiful woman and always looks friendly and smiling around her family, often having fun with Roger, but there's not much additional information about her personality.

They had Rufus, Tigerlily and Lola together and it appears that Debbie has stayed a lot by Roger’s side after Freddie’s death. “Freddie Mercury was still alive when Rufus came along in 1991 and those two got on famously. Mind you, Fred was always fabulous with kids — he was the one who came up with Rufus’s middle name: Tiger.” They split in around 2004, but they still have a close relationship nowadays and Debbie introduced Tigerlily and Lola to the modeling world, following her steps, while Rufus is drummer of The Darkness, much like Roger.

“Although Rufus’s mum [Deborah Leng] and I were together for about 15 years, we never did get married. I also had Felix and Rory Eleanor from a previous relationship [with Dominique Beyrand], but in that situation, we did eventually tie the knot. I guess I wanted to make sure Felix and Rory were looked after financially. “I’ll admit my life back then was, well… let’s say it was complicated. It was a strange time for all of us. Wouldn’t it be great if relationships were simple and easy? Sadly, breaking up with people who mean a lot to you is never simple or easy. The important thing for me has always been that the kids support each other and feel like brothers and sisters. There’s not some from “this relationship” and some from “that relationship”; they are a gang of five.” (Roger in 2014)

“Mum and Dad never actually got married, but their separation was still pretty rough. There was a bit of shouting for a while and a few headlines, but, y’know what: shit happens. People split up. Both of them have gone off and done their own thing, and they’ve got a much better relationship these days.” (Rufus in 2014)

Salman Khan’s Diwali release Tiger 3 is nearly a week away and the excitement is tremendous. What’s interesting is that it’ll have a solo release of sorts, as no other Hindi or Pan-India South film is clashing on the same day. In fact, Salman Khan has not faced a clash since 2010. The last time that happened was when his 2009 action super-hit film Wanted was released on the same day as Rani Mukerji-starrer Dil Bole Hadippa.

Dabangg (2010), Ready (2011), Bodyguard (2011), Ek Tha Tiger (2012), Dabangg 2 (2012), Jai Ho (2014), Kick (2014), Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015), Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015), Sultan (2016), Tubelight (2017), Race 3 (2018), Bharat (2019), Dabangg 3 (2019) and Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan (2023) released with no competition. Antim (2021) faced a collision with Satyameva Jayate 2 (2021) but then it didn’t feature the superstar in the lead.

Other stars haven’t been that fortunate. Shah Rukh Khan’s Dilwale (2015) and Raees (2017) were released alongside Bajirao Mastani (2015) and Kaabil (2017) respectively. SRK is at his best position arguably right now and yet, his next film Dunki will have to share screens with Salaar on Christmas 2023. Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha clashed with Akshay Kumar’s Raksha Bandhan last year. Salman’s last few films have not done well and yet, no one is ready to come on the same Friday as him.

We asked trade experts about this rare phenomenon. Trade veteran Taran Adarsh said, “He has a huge following and is a darling of the masses. The business he has generated over a period of time in mass pockets is phenomenal. Though he has had a rough patch, he's the pied piper of Bollywood.”

Trade analyst Atul Mohan, in agreement, exulted, “Salman is a very big hero of the masses. He has always had such a huge fan following; Shah Rukh Khan ka aisa following ab bana hai. Aamir Khan never had such a mass pull. Salman’s craze is one of a kind. Hence, filmmakers are wary of clashing their films with him. Itna bada hero hai, kaun takkar lega iske saath?”

Girish Johar, producer and film business analyst, remarked, “Salman is the only superstar who people want to see on screen. He has the maximum on-screen superstardom out of all the actors. It’s a very critical factor. He’s also not on our social media every time, going to malls, opening ribbons, dancing, etc.”

He continued, “Unfortunately his films have not worked as he hasn’t paid much attention to the storytelling, packaging, direction, etc. He has that power that if he gets these things right, then there’s no stopping him. That’s why many are wary of clashing with him as they know that at least in the opening weekend, their film will get butchered.”

Raj Bansal, the owner of Entertainment Paradise cinema hall in Jaipur, explained, “Salman Khan is an action hero. When no one was doing action, he was the only action excelling in this genre. Somewhere, his confidence shook and he also did non-action films like Tubelight (2017), Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015), etc. Only Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015) worked in this regard. But even when his films were gadbad, they still made Rs. 100 crores plus. There was a time when the hit films of Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn did Rs. 100 crores. But Salman’s flop films do Rs. 100 crores even today! And his hit films have done more than Rs. 300 crores. It’s thanks to him that the industry realized the true potential of a Hindi film. Hence, clashing with him can prove suicidal.”

He also said, “He’s 100% an organic star. Even Sunny Deol is.”

Girish Johar added, “If he moulds himself to the sensibilities that cater to his fans and also provides intelligent content, then sky is the limit. I think Tiger 3 will do well. It ticks all the right boxes.”

Taran Adarsh also said along the same lines, “Tiger 3 being a brand and essaying a role that is much-loved, I am sure it’ll have a great run and a huge opener.”

Luftwaffe performs 'Rapid Viking' exercise in Iceland

The German Air Force (Luftwaffe) began what it called the "lean and mean" operation on Friday (28) to demonstrate its ability to move quickly to Iceland as part of a two-week exercise named "Rapid Viking".

From July 28 to August 10, six German Eurofighters and 30 military personnel from the 73 "Steinhoff" Squadron of the Tactical Air Force will be deployed at Keflavik Air Base, according to a statement. Once on site, the squadrons will carry out several daily training flights.

The Rapid Viking Exercise is an opportunity for the Air Force to demonstrate how it can move to Reykjavik “at supersonic speed,” said Lieutenant General Ingo Gerhartz, chief of staff of the service.

The Luftwaffe intends to serve as the "first response," he noted in the statement. "That's why we are training for a fast displacement with as few human and material resources as possible, especially in this scenario."

Two A400M aircraft sent 25 tons of material and personnel to Iceland. The first plane carried nine pallets more personnel, while the second plane carried five pallets of material plus a hydraulic test bench.

On average, the Air Force would require between 130 and 150 tons of material to participate in an exercise, at a cost of up to €200 million, said Sergeant Oliver M. This amount of cargo can take up to a week to be "packaged", including three days just to load the pallets on the aircraft.

For Rapid Viking, the 25 tons of material, worth about €2 million, took only two days to be packed and one hour to be loaded into the aircraft.

A Luftwaffe squadron was last deployed in Iceland in 2012 as part of a NATO air policing initiative. Iceland is a member of NATO, but does not have its own armed forces. The allies show solidarity with the 375,000 inhabitants by temporarily reallocating forces to the island nation.

The invasion of Ukraine by Russia in February 2022 led the European military to reassess the state of their capacity stocks, as well as their ability to prepare for battle quickly. Last October, the German air force and naval troops carried out a rapid deployment in Estonia, participating in a month-long exercise dubbed the "Baltic Tiger" to test how quickly the services could provide reinforcements to the allies in need.

Last year, the Luftwaffe also held its first deployment in the Indo-Pacific, completing its goal of reaching Singapore less than 24 hours after takeoff from Neuburg Air Base in Bavaria.

Conclusion

There were high expectations going into Forbidden Door, but if anyone tries to tell you that it's a 'two match card' feel free to slap them, because they'd probably jizz over the one Bloodline match per PPV and call it the best thing ever. This PPV had its downsides for sure, a lot of weak finishes - a couple maybe done due to injuries or Sting feeling a little loopy - so it didn't come out to its full potential, but it was still a really good night for wrestling.

I would still say in spite of everything it was still a success, but I also feel like AEW and New Japan need to consider making it a 2-Day event to fit more talent on the show, we still lacked names on AEW's side like FTR, HoB, Acclaimed, BCG (if they wanted to come on I'm not sure how Jay feels about using FD as a loophole), Miro, Ethan, Dark Order, PAC, Keith Lee, TNT Champion Christian I mean Luchasaurus, Wardlow, Samoa Joe, and names on NJPW's side like Bullet Club, GoD, Alex Zayne, Nagata, Team Filthy, Bishamon, Great O Khan, Toru Yano (let Yano and Mox face off you cowards!), Master Wato, and KUSHIDA, and this is not even bringing up all the women we could've used - which frankly, we should try to schedule an All-Women's crossover PPV with Stardom featuring DDT/TJPW, AEW/ROH and maybe even other companies' talents.

But I digress, a lot of match finishes were poor but a lot of the wrestling in matches were enjoyable, I had fun and we set up some new directions and potential rematches down the line.

Match of the Night: This is probably gonna be controversial to some but I felt that the 10 Man Tag was the best of the night. Omega/Ospreay and Okada/Danielson were really good, but they also took time to get going, and I do prefer a high-energy wrestling match to a slower technical bout. Best Attire: Tetsuya Naito, man looks like he stepped out of a masquerade party and since SANADA is just his 'regular guy' persona rather than the cold skull and we had no extended Omega attire he's really the only choice. Best Performance: I want to give it to Eddie for carrying the emotional weight of the 10-man, I also want to give it to Punk for being a proper shithouse to a mixed crowd, I also really want to give it to Danielson for wrestling a clinic with a fractured arm, but I do have to give it to Omega and Ospreay as a tie they wrestled their butts off Spot of the Night: As much as I still love Takeshita decking Ishii, it's Omega kicking out of the OWA at 1

Week 2: February 20th-26th, 2023 // Lions and Tigers and… Lizards?

The beginning of this week has been slow and beautiful. I drove Alissa and her friend Katy to the start of the South Coast Track at Cockle Creek, and found myself a nice little spot to set up the van for a couple nights. It’s the first time in a long time where I’ve felt like I can really just “be.”

There’s nothing I have to do and there’s nowhere I have to be, and it feels wonderful. My days have been filled with hours of reading, wandering around the beach, and staring mindlessly at the view from the comfort of my bed. There’s no rush, no urgency, there’s just this beautiful feeling of pure existence, for no other purpose than to just exist.

Feb 22nd I finally went out on my first hike in Australia! I got up at 6am to watch the sunrise from the beach + have breakfast, then I drove 10minutes up the road back to where I dropped Alissa and her friend off. It was a beautiful ~16km round trip to Lions Rock at South Cape Bay and oh my goodness – when I say the view took my breath away… was such a beautiful spot to end at! I’ll let the photos speak for themselves (even though they really don’t do the views any justice). The whole trail covered a variety of landscape, from spidery archway trees, to vast open plains, to amazon/jungle like dense forests – it was truly a great introduction to Australia hiking. Got to see my first snake (a black tiger snake) and many lizards, lots of cute birds, and cool plant life.

My favourite thing about this type of lifestyle is the people you meet – always so friendly and a wealth of knowledge for other experiences, always so eager to help you in any way you need! I lucked out with having this super lovely older couple set up in their van next to me, Rab & Jude, who offered me food and a place to stay for when I’m in New South Whales, a map of the south coast, and plenty of destination recommendations.

Sunday was a lovely, slow and connected day – spending some time at the Mayfair Market in the morning, and making dinner with Alissa + her roommates. We made lasagna, garlic bread, and a beet salad (made by Sam, who was inspired after Alissa and I spent the morning stating beets were an inferior vegetable and tasted like dirt lol). It felt really nice to spend an evening with great company, eating great food, and having great conversations. Feeling very grateful to these people for making Tassie feel like home and taking such great care of me in my first couple weeks here <3

Other fun updates: had my first bad stall on a hill... rubber was burnt... smells were bad... but I persevered and managed to get it eventually lol! On the plus side, my parallel parking game is getting much stronger 😎 Had my first van spider! Aaannd finally learned how to belay thanks to Annie teaching me!

These next couple weeks are going to be a combination of some more hiking adventures, getting back out in the van camping again, sorting out some minor van repairs, and (weather depending) getting out climbing on some real rocks for first time in years!

What I wanted in 2023

this is the third in a series of posts in which i reflect on my 2023 from a financial perspective, using data from my financial journal.

things i can kind of remember wanting

a more precise scale. to weightyarn scraps with more precision. i have to weigh them like once every 5 months so it’s very low priority.

Masterclass subscription. sometimes those ads really get to me, you know? but i know that i’d use it for a week and then drop it. not worth it unless i seriously commit to it.

clothes steamer. something i think about from time to time, especially in the summer. but i wouldn’t have much use of it anyway.

bubble tea with friends. we ended up not being able to go that time and when we met afterwards we were like “nah”.

i'm constantly struggling against the urge of starting a small ceramics animals collection. my heart tells me yes, my hate for dusting forbids me.

things that i’m like? but why???

getting a snack at an underground station in the city centre, specifically so that i would get change and perhaps there would be funky coins there (i collect euros from other countries)

lime nail polish. i do not use nail polish.

knives out poster. when glass onion came out, i intensely wanted a poster for 2 days and scoured the internet for one and then forgot all about it.

old letters or journals. thankfully i didn’t buy those, because i already have some and have no idea what to do with them. should i donate them to a museum? and they cost a pretty penny too!

jellycat bashful cottontail bunny. i saw it in a store and was like: mine! i don’t know why. i already have one in another colour and no intentions of starting a collection.

jellycat fluffy bunny (oatmeal). i remembered the other one but this one? why?

opal ring like the one Lucy wears in The Rookie. if you’ve watched the series, you know which one. i don’t even wear silver jewellery.

perfume. i would never wear it anyway.

Knitting Comfortably by Carson Demers. a book about the ergonomics of handknitting. i’d buy the ebook but it doesn’t exist! you can only get a physical copy for 50$ + shipping from the States. no thank you.

Pride and Prejudice, Penguin Deluxe Edition. because it’s gorgeous. but i already have a copy

Pride and Prejudice, funny edition. i found on Vinted an edition of p&p with Darcy smoking on the cover. i would be more precise on what edition it was, but i unfavourited because i knew i’d end up buying it if i had easy access to it and i can’t find it again.

642 Things to Draw. because sometimes i’m like “maybe i should start drawing again!” and then i never do.

things i will consider actually buying

new coat. an item that was mentioned various times but i did not end up buying. my current coat’s only problem is that the pockets’ zip doesn’t work anymore. i should just pay to have them repaired.

stitch markers for knitting. unfortunately i only like the very expensive ones you see on Etsy. but i was able to find some on Vinted, so...

beads for jewellery making. i saw some cute ones at Tiger for like 2€ so...

cross-stitch embroidery material. i like cross-stitching but it’s so expensive! and i already spend a lot in yarn.

tarot deck. i’ve been wanting one for years, just for giggles. i don’t think i’d ever use it, though, so i never end up buying it. sooner or later i’ll relent.

a new wallet. i have had my wallet for… 10 years? it still does it’s job and it didn’t get ruined but it’s not very fashionable. it is a bit bulky but i have other small wallets that i never use for one reason or another

barefoot shoes. sooner or later i’ll buy these but i don’t really have the time or money right now. also, i hate shopping.

footstool. my desk chair is too tall.

cotton yarn for a project. i will buy that sooner or later.

On Monday morning, the ETBU Baseball team traveled across town to paint the exterior of homes in a neighborhood in Boca Chica. The group of 54 were able to paint three houses before returning to the hotel for a quick lunch, before heading out for game one of the week.

ETBU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a two-run homerun off the bat of Austin Barry. The Dominican team, made up of local players who are mainly MLB minor leaguers, tied the game in the bottom of the third. ETBU retook the lead in the fourth on an opposite field, solo homerun off the bat of Hunter Rumachik, making the score 3-2.

The Dominican team scored one run in the bottom of the fourth, making the score 3-3. The Tigers responded with two runs in the top of the fifth inning, after Jacob Evangelista tripled to start the inning and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Carson Wilson. Connor Massimini walked and later scored on a RBI by Ben Lea, leaving the score 5-3.

ETBU allowed one run in the eighth inning and was able to retire the side in the bottom of the ninth for the 5-4 victory.

ETBU December 2023 graduate Carson Wilson provided the following recap of the day.

“Our first full day in the Dominican Republic was very eye opening and exciting. We started the day heading to what was once a major sugar cane village. This village was extremely run down, had stray dogs, and even stray goats roaming around everywhere. A majority of houses were solely made out of scrap metal. However, there was nothing but smiles on people’s faces. These people lived to survive one day at a time, but they could not have been happier.

We were able to paint three homes and were able to meet some local people who were extremely thankful. A group of 12-14 year old boys came out of their homes and joined our group to help paint as well. These were not even their homes and I don’t even think they knew the people who actually lived there. But they walked through the village with torn up shoes, some with no shoes, just to be part of our group and help their community. That is something I will never forget.

In the afternoon, we headed to our first game. The field was just walking distance from our resort through the city. We had no clue what to expect as far as competition or what kind of field we were playing on. We walked up and the field was in rough condition, the outfield probably hadn’t been mowed in weeks and the infield didn’t have any grass. As the other team began to show up we realized what we were up against. They entered the stadium with Yankees, Red Sox, Padres, Pirates, Reds, Angels, Diamondbacks, and Dodgers written across their chest. For us it was mesmerizing, for them it was just another day at the field to have fun and play the game. We soon realized that as baseball players, we are not as far off as we thought.

Regardless of the big name teams they were wearing, or the history of baseball the Dominican Republic has, we set out with the intention to win as we always do. We ended up winning 5-4. Today, I had some of the most fun ever playing baseball. The happiness and joy the people showed at the game and the entire day was amazing.

This is just in one full day here in the Dominican and it felt like a week. I enjoyed every second and am just so grateful for this experience. I am looking forward to the rest of the week and can’t wait to share even more things that I experience and learn along the way.”

Today is Sunday, September 3rd, 2023, I haven’t written since May. Humberto you just started the fall season of soccer and you’re actually liking it, it’s a pain in the ass for me, your dad isn’t very involved so it’s a bit stressful for me. I get off at 5pm rush home to get here by 5:30 and drive back to Anthem to make it in time for practice by 6pm, but you like it, and I think it’s good for you so I’ll do whatever it takes. You’ve also started Kindergarten, you’re first day was on August 7th, you’re not a fan of going to school. I try to motivate you but you just want to stay home and play. Your teacher is Ms. Perillo, and she’s awesome. Unfortunately dad hasn’t been around much, and there’s been a sad morning or two during this time. I dropped you off recently and you were sad that you hadn’t seen your dad in 2 weeks and I bawled my eyes out as soon as I got in the car. I wish I could make that better but I just can’t.

You’ve made some friends, Oakley and Greyson, you also go to school with 2 of your soccer teammates, he twins Grey and Grant. They’re also in Kindergarten. Now that’ you’ve made friends you barely touch your lunch, I can only assume it’s because you’re too busy talking. Stop talking and start eating little boy! You got punched in the eye by a little girl, Bobbie Martinez, because she was bullying your classmate Raven, you tried telling Bobbie that she was being rude and apparently she punched you. You forgot to mention it to me though so I assume it wasn’t as much of a “punch” as it sounds. I see how quickly you’re learning, and I’m so proud of you. More importantly I hope you’re proud of yourself. You recently volunteered me to bring snacks for your class “Pirate Booty” they’re puff chips, I’m so happy that you’re so confident in me that you volunteered me because to be honest I’m not even that confident in myself lol. This week we need to get you new cleats, your first game is on Saturday and we need you to be fast and comfortable to kick some ass! GO TIGERS FC!

Eva, where do I start with your bratty ass. You have so much sass and attitude! I am so amazed at your vocabulary, you’re the definition of 3 going on 13, and you’re fashion sense is unmatched, you have so much confidence, I hope you never lose it, and I hope you carry it forever, everywhere you go. I need to get you off the bottle because you have a strong emotional attachment to that “cold milk”. I have you on a waitlist for Gymnastics, it’s a bit difficult finding a gymnastics class that works with my work schedule and brother’s soccer schedule. I want you to try it and see if you like it. I think you’ll be good at it! The idea of dance is so cute, and girly but… I think in the long run gymnastics will be better. You’re a ball of energy, super independent, and very agile, and I want to take advantage of it. If gymnastics isn’t for you, we’ll try something else, but I’m not letting you fall behind on an extracurricular activity! You can count to 25 and you love to paint. You’ve got an artistic side, painting, coloring, singing, dancing, arts and crafts, doing your makeup and painting your nails! That’s what you’re into right now. You love all the Disney princesses and Minnie Mouse.

My little Beva, you have such a strong attitude, you’ve been getting in trouble a lot lately because Eva does whatever she wants even when I’ve told her not to. Parenting right now has been a bit challenging with you, you contradict me a lot! You’re very independent which sometimes leads to a little bit or a lot of a mess on your behalf. I know that attitude is going to get you far but right now I just need you to listen to mom a little bit more baby girl. You’re so easy to love, I’m the luckiest mom in the world to have you as my baby, both of you really. The hardest part is realizing that slowly you don’t need me as much anymore. I love seeing you grown but I also wish I could freeze time and keep you both this way forever. I know some day before I know it the stressful days of trying to get everything done for you both will be over, the mess will be less, and these baby faces and baby voices won’t be like this forever. I want to enjoy you as much as I can. There’s not enough time in the world to take you both in. I love you my babies, more than you can imagine, and I truly mean that. I love you forever.
