With this project, Warburg created a visual reference system that was far ahead of its time. With @the_warburg_institute Roberto Ohrt and Axel Heil have now undertaken the task of finding all of individual pictures from the atlas and displaying these reproductions of artworks from the Middle East, European antiquity, and the Renaissance in the same way that Warburg himself showed them, on panels hung with black fabric. Nicholas Mirzoeff - How to See the World (2015) An introduction to Visual Studies and the importance of image in the modern world, this is a pretty fascinating book. It starts out with self-representation, from the self-portrait to the selfie and continues on to explore how images were and are important in the way people see themselves, others and the world. This is also a really political book in a good way, it explores how images are not innocent of political content, and towards the end explores how social networks and the current capacity that so many people have to create their own images have led to popular movements propelled by visual culture, from the Arab Spring to the Occupy Wall Street movements. All in all, it's an easy and important read that even if it doesn't bring anything specially new to the table, at least condenses it all in one place contextualizing so much of the visuals of modern world in the political and aesthetic history of humans. Coming soon from @hatjecantzverlag !! #Repost ・・・ Aby Warburg (1866–1929) is considered one of the fathers of modern visual studies, whose pictorial legacy was long hidden from view: In the late years of his life, the Hamburg art and cultural historian worked on his Bilderatlas Mnemosyne, with which he created a visual reference system that was ahead of its time. Warburg dealt intensively with the interaction of myths, images, and rites from different cultural contexts and set new standards with his method: he rearranged canonical alongside unknown images and considered them across epochs. ⠀ ⠀ The large-format illustrated book now being published and the future exhibition at Haus der Kulturen der Welt (postponed until autumn 2020) restores the last documented version of the 1929 atlas almost completely with the original illustrations.
