🚨 New research alert! Carnivores typically have forward-facing eye sockets to ensure stereoscopic (3D) vision—an important trait for judging the position of prey during hunting. But the “marsupial sabertooth” Thylacosmilus had wide-set eyes and laterally facing sockets, adaptations seen more often in herbivores than meat-eaters. So how could it maintain an estimated diet of 70 percent meat? A team of researchers, including Museum scientist Ross MacPhee, think special adaptations allowed Thylacosmilus to see in 3D despite its unusual anatomy. Using CT scanning and 3D virtual reconstructions, they’ve compared this predator’s visual system to those of modern and extinct carnivores. Learn more about their findings! Link in our bio. Game: Wario Land Virtual Boy (UPDATED)
Today i learned of an exciting new development: a Virtual Boy emulator for the 3DS has finally been put out in Working Condition! And it's actually great! So now i can can experience these virtual boy games with actual stereoscopic 3D. It's called Red Viper, and you can get it here: https://github.com/skyfloogle/red-viper/releases/tag/v0.9.0 So i started out Wario Land on Virtual Boy. I've seen LPs of it before but tbh i forget most things about it. I know it's a short game compared to other Wario Land games but it's still pretty solid. Protip: the shoulder button lets you run, which is useful when you have the Dragon Hat(name?) on. This might be one of the first 2D platformers to utilize a "stage in both the foreground and background" gimmick that's relatively common in some of Nintendo's modern works (see: Donkey Kong Country Returns and Mario Wonder). It's a Wario Land game, so so far it seems to be good for a nice little platforming lark. I'm gonna go for collecting all the treasures in every level, which i guess means 100%? Should be fun, i've enjoyed it already. It helps that i'm using the New 3DS XL, which has headtracking which helps stabilize the 3D effect during small perturbations while you're holding the console, which when i've played in a well lit room seems to work out pretty well. So yeah if you have a 3DS, get that sucker hacked and try out Virtual Boy games, now in stereoscopic 3D that doesn't break your brain to look at (I found it helpful to change the display color from red to gray). This rules so much and i love that this exists now as a modern way to get a fully functional and modern virtual boy experience. UPDATE: So i was playing Wario Land VB, and in game i saw a "low battery indicator" and thought "huh that's curious" then looked to the battery indicator on my 3DS, and it was low! So i plugged it in. You might think "why is that weird" but you don't understand. This is a game from 1995 that has a low battery indicator for its battery powered controller, and the emulator is letting it register the console's battery signal as the controller's... idk it's just brilliant that it Works Well, i completely forgot Virtual Boy games even had low battery indicators! Seriously this is such an impressive feat of game preservation work and i applaud the devs behind Red Viper.

[Review] Virtual Boy Wario Land (VB)
Tumblr media
Wario Land 1.5... in 3D!!!
I wrote about Wario Land 1 being a one-off, but when I started this next instalment I saw I was wrong. This one gets overlooked because of its niche release on the unsuccessful Virtual Boy and unnumbered status in the series (the title is clunky, but its original title—Wario Cruise—was even more unfitting), but it is in fact an interesting companion game to the original, and an important step in the progression of Wario and his series developing their character, maybe more so than WL1 even.
Tumblr media
In VBWL, Wario completes his transformation from goofy-faced villain to treasure-hunting tough-guy anti-cool anti-hero. The timer and life counter are still here, but play control is much smoother, the exploration is more satisfying with destructible terrain and better-hidden secrets, and the powerup system has been tweaked with a new super-hat that combines the functions of all three: fire breath, flight, and butt-slamming. A new run button lets you zip around on land and underwater, so you barely miss the shoulder charge and its now momentum-carrying charge jump when you're small or have fire breath.
Tumblr media
It's not just the mechanics that have seen changes. As this same team did with Metroid 2, they've experimented with the game structure... to mixed results. The stage count is only 10 (plus 4 bosses), but each one has branching paths and backtracking, as well as the 3D-enabled foreground/background switching. There's no world map, just a lift between levels, as you start the game dumped into an underground cavern and are making your way back to the surface. You can revisit stages but only in real space by taking the lift down to the immediate previous stage and traversing back from the exit (this is where the timer really doesn't make sense). The setup gives you a driving force—to escape the subterrane—but when you start going through jungles, haunted houses, factories, etc. then it strains credulity.
Tumblr media
With only a two-hour runtime, the game expects you to replay it all the way through to better your time and find more treasures, to change your ending (again, like Metroid). Not in one sitting though, or the Virtual Boy's eye-searing cheap red screens could do you some real damage. There's even a harder New Game Plus which apparently adds more spikes and makes the enemies more aggressive. I thought it was hard enough already and cheesed a lot with rewinds and savestates; Wario can still bully enemies and interact with them when you learn where they are and aren't protected, then pick them up and chuck them, but it's all too easy to take damage and lose your powerful-feeling abilities (which are needed for finding secrets).
Tumblr media
I did emulate, not having access to the rare VB hardware. Unfortunately homebrew emulation on 3DS has very poor performance, and doesn't support the system's stereoscopic capabilities. Mednafen supports anaglyph 3D with various coloured glasses, if available, but I opted for a straight 2D rendering with a classy white-on-black look rather than the harsh native red-on-black. Interactions between the foreground and background are disappointingly scarce, but at certain times—stage 13 in particular—the busyness of the overlapping layers made gameplay very hard to parse. Otherwise it's perfectly playable, and a quite accessible option for experiencing this—dare I say—hidden gem.

- Do you prefer the Koopalings (à la SMB3/SMW) or Baby Bowser?
- Did you play any of the Virtual Boy Mario games (Clash, Wario, Tennis), and if so, did you enjoy them? (I had Mario’s Tennis and I remember liking it. I can still remember the music vividly)
- What’s the classic Mario game you wish they’d bring back, either as a remake or via emulation? (I think you mentioned NSMB Wii recently, which I have fond memories of)
- If you were put in charge of Mario stuff at Nintendo right now and had free reign/carte blanche, what would you do?
Did you mean Baby Bowser or Bowser Junior? Not that there's much difference... either way my answer is the Koopalings by a huge margin.
Yes, I'm not big on the Tennis game, Mario's clash is interesting to me as a fan of the Mario Bros Arcade game, and another game where Wario is the Antagonist, I'm always for that. And Virtual Boy Wario Land feels like it's exactly part of an alternate timeline where Wario Land is a series that I would be more likely to enjoy. It's like the first Wario Land, but without screen crunch and with Wario being speedier. I do still need to finish these games. I did get a pair of 3D goggles so I can play on my CRT with stereoscopic 3D using an emulator.
If it's only a remake or emulation, then I guess I'd go with Super Mario RPG... I mean... I can play it on my SNES... but a remake would be dope as hell. But even if it was just a straight up port, I know it's not on the NSO right now so I would like other people to get the chance to play it. Of course if I could have a new entry in a dead Mario series, I want an updated version of Mario Bros. Arcade, with new abilities, new power ups, new characters and enemies, and new modes, online play and leaderboards. That or Wario's Woods.
That last one is a pretty big question.
First off... I would try to have a little more synergy between the different spinoffs, mostly in the Mario mainline series if I can justify their inclusion. Daisy, Wario, Donkey Kong, and the like. To paint a clearer picture of what I mean, if I had control earlier on, Tatanga would have been in Galaxy assisting Bowser and Rapheal the Raven would have appeared as a miniboss since they both make sense in that setting, Nabbit never would have existed and it would have been Wario stealing power-ups that you have to chase down, he'd regularly be causing grief to Mario in the main series, not even necessarily working with Bowser, Daisy would have been in the Sand Kingdom and Foreman Spike would have been in New Donk City... though I wouldn't be trying to cram in anyone and everyone, I'd just like a tad more synsergy when it makes sense.
I wouldn't do this as much for the spinoffs, like I wouldn't have a Donkey Kong Country game where DK is fighting the Koopa Troop, but I would once in a while imply that the Koopas do in fact exist, maybe a little throw away line from Cranky Kong or something.
I'd also try to revive dormant Mario series and bring ones that fell from grace back to a state that resembles what people remember the most fondly, while still trying to inject new ideas. Wario Land comes back taking a cue from WL4, with Waluigi as a player 2, Donkey Kong Country would bring back the Kremlings and make the other Kongs playable rather than make them powerups, Yoshi's platformers would stop all the papercraft stuff and go for a more hand drawn look ( and I mean flat art like Wario Land Shake It, not that garbage on the 3DS )
I'd make a new Mario RPG series that resembles a mix of all the Mario RPGs up until now. You get established Mario characters on your team both well known and obscure as well as new characters made up for the game, yes typical Mario enemies with accessories and hair like the Paper Mario Partners, i'd let the Paper Mario series keep going in it's current direction since it's got it's fans, I think Paper Mario fans would just be happy to have something resembling the first two games again.
I'd bring back Mario Vs. Donkey Kong but I'd get rid of the mini wind up toy things, just make a good puzzle platformer like DK '94, and possibly have more elements from both Mario and Donkey Kong's home series. In a twist, the post game would take a cue from Donkey Kong Junior and allow you to play as Diddy trying to release DK from Mario's chains.
I'd go back to having Mario make odd ball cameo appearances in other Nintendo games, if not straight up appearing like in Punch-Out, then having expies like Talon/Tarin in the Legend of Zelda or Mr. EAD in F-Zero.
And lastly, Mario Kart would turn into more of a celebration of Mario. Characters from any spinoff or any era could appear as racers. A good quarter of the tracks in any new Mario Kart game would be based on existing Mario games and their spinoffs, kind of like the Yoshi's Island track we recently got, but like... more of that.. and yes RPG characters could appear to.
I could probably spend all day on this question my dude so I think i'll end it here.

Thinking about the Virtual Boy (aka Nintendo's clusterfuck of an attempt to get into virtual reality back in 1995)
Tumblr media
Everything about it just looks so. Uncomfortable. Like the controller looks way too thin, the button placement seems. Off, and don't even get me started on the headset
Tumblr media
Look how uncomfortable that looks! You'd either have to stand up the whole time you're playing or sit hunched over the headset and god knows what playing it for more than 5 minutes would do to your back
Tumblr media
Also did I mention that it looked like this? And that the only colour it could display was red? And that it was an attempt at stereoscopic 3D, so they basically just overlayed two images in an attempted parallax effect? No wonder so many people got headaches from playing it
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It released in 1995, and was discontinued in 1996 after only selling 770,000 units. Only 22 games were ever released for the system which is honestly surprisingly high for its short lifespan

It has become very typical for Queen to have almost exactly the same setlist for the whole tour. The only exceptions were when the band members (Brian, Adam) were ill. Brian had flu in Cologne and Amsterdam, Adam got bronchitis in Frankfurt, Brussels (that concert had to be cancelled) and Milan. All those cities got slightly shorter sets.
In some cities Brian sang a special little (local) song before Love Of My Life. Also in most cities he used a special stereoscopic selfie stick (two GoPro cameras) to film a video of the crowd after Love Of My Life. Roger sang either A Kind Of Magic or These Are The Days Of Our Lives - or both.

“[…] Guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor are now grizzled, grey-haired men, but still pack the showmanship and musicianship of real rock legends, even if this does mean indulgences such as drum battles (with Taylor’s son, Rufus) and guitar solos that presumably require enough electricity to power a small town. […]”
“[…] ‘There will only be one Freddie Mercury, ever,’ Lambert declares, as people roar approval for ‘the new boy’. However, in Adam Lambert, the late star’s old bandmates have surely found the right person to honour his achievements.”
- Dave Simpson, The Guardian

“[…] Adam Lambert disappeared and Brian May sat on a stool at the front of the runway and reminisced about the band's many visits to Tyneside and said how he loved playing at Newcastle's City Hall in the early days and got the audience to join him with a little bit of Fog on the Tyne. […]”
- Angela Upex, Chronicle Live
“[…] Lambert nailed it and just about everything else that followed. Even a potentially challenging ‘duet’ with a virtual Mercury didn’t faze the 32-year-old as he traded choruses on the evocative Bohemian Rhapsody. May and Taylor looked on with pride as their protégé pulled out all of the stops and Lambert’s reward should be a more inclusive role moving forward. […]”
