I Do Love an Evening Cape: 1905 The Columbia Book of the Use of Yarns
I love a cape for evening for the same reason I think they are silly for day wear: that they are a bit impractical. The long ones usually must be clutched to be kept shut which means they are no good for day wear when you need to full use of your hands to open a door or carry a laptop. But in the evening, when you are relaxing, you can be a bit impractical and enjoy it.
In the evening, you can also indulge in the frivolous if you are in the mood. This opera cap from 1905 falls into that category. The whole thing is crocheted, first in a yarn they call Floss, in order to create the body of the cape. Then, to create the ruffles, you go back over the body in order to add 8 rows of ruffles, also in Floss and then add to the edges of those rows, picot trimming in Shetland Wool. a I inch ribbon is drawn through the upper edge to keep its shape. Then, a 3 inch wide ribbon, not a rarity back then when large ribbons were used on large hats, is added to create a tie to keep the cape around your neck.
The whole thing looks like a forthy confection and seems worth the effort. I can imagine it as particularly effective in pastels which always look like they floaty. They wore it with the long gowns of the day, with puffy bodices, tiny waists, and long trumpet-flared skirts, but I don’t see why we couldn’t throw it over a modern look to soften it and draw attention to the face. Of course, one would have to work out a modern gauge and size, but doing the math would not be very hard.
This is from an out of copyright book which is available at Archive.org: https://openlibrary.org/search?q=%22columbia+books+of+the+use+of+yarn%22&mode=everything

Lovely vintage white crochet tablecloth. This is a pretty, but distressed, piece. Great for vintage shabby chic, cottage, or farmhouse style decor.

Happy fall! Behold the corn pouch!! 🌽🌽🌽🌽 I made this with my first time doing colour work with knitting!! (The rows of corn are made by pulling the 'Fair Isle' colour changes really tight! It makes an extremely dense and fluffy result which is suuuuper squishable and spongey and I love it ) This was really fun and made for a quick project to do while I take a break from my longer crochet project. 🌽 Years ago, I got a knitted corn like this (I don't remember from where), and I had no idea what it was for, but I loved it anyway, and it's been sitting in my yarn bin for years. Well, I just moved my yarns into a bigger bin and decided to look for the pattern and I found it! It's a vintage pattern for a corn potholder? I don't see how that works out, but it could certainly be a penholder or something! Regardless, the mere fact that this exists brings me so much joy. It's corn. But it's knitted! Lol. 🌽 I plan to try and make a few more, maybe in some funky colours, since I don't really have yellow, but I can also experiment with altering the pattern now that I know how it works out. ((NGL, this one looks a little phallic uh.. lol.)) But the leaves on this bother me too. The leaves are the one part that's crocheted, and the instructions were unclear and the shape is all wrong. But the next corn I make will be even more awesome. 🌽🌽🌽🌽 Link to the pattern is on my Ravelry account: WhatsHisCape 🌽🌽 #knit #knitting #crochet #vintagecrochet #vintageknitting #vintagepattern #corn #fall #autumn #harvest #fairisle #diy #yarn #crafting #itscorn https://www.instagram.com/p/CijOaFWLjWd/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Vintage Designer Sally Levison Originals late 1960’s/early 1970’s Crochet Maxi Dress Established in early 1968, fashion label "Levison Originals" was the creation of a young Sarah Levison-Marder, whose knitwear pieces became very successful within the London fashion scene. With a manufacturing base in the picturesque island of Gozo, Malta, garments were imported and sold to the British public from a Mortimer Street boutique in the heart of Fitzrovia, Mayfair, London Sally Levison self-donated several of her original designs to the V&A Museum in London, and her pieces are now considered very rare and highly collectible. Sally Levison passed away in 2006. The Victoria & Albert Museum: Sally Levison perceived that knitwear was undergoing a radical transformation and caught the mood for coordinated and “mix and match” outfits. Her short-lived but internationally successful business was set up on the small Maltese island of Gozo in 1968. She employed up to one thousand knitters and crocheters and in 1970, encouraged by the Maltese government, set up a factory. The business was sold to Mary Farrin in 1973. Condition: In Excellent vintage condition with minor signs of wear. Material: 52% Vincel, 48% Courtelle Beautiful soft, fine, knit V-Neck and Low V-Back Slips on over head Stretches to fit, so will fit sizes UK 8, 10 & 12 US 4,6 & 8 EUR 26, 38 & 40 Approximate measurements: all measurements taken across with garment laid flat (so double for largest circumference) Across bust: up to 18.5 Inches Waist: up to 16 Inches Hip: up to 22 Inches Total length: 60 Inches #SallyLevison #CrochetDress #VintageDress #Dress #BlueDress #HandKnitDress #knitwear #designervintage #longbluedress #ArtandDesignMatters #EveningDress #HandMade #HandCrochet #HandMadeDress #FashionHistory #Fashion #VintageFashion #vintageclothing #vintageblogger #vintagecrochet #vintageknitdress #longknitdress #longcrochetdress #rarevintagedress #rarevintage #truevintage #thelowecollective https://www.instagram.com/p/ChTKsjkp-_7/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

New skirt design! Tight skirt. This tight skirt is made with a combination of shell stitches and chain stitches. The fabric has great stretches to make tight skirt and it fits perfectly to the body line without feeling tight. The shell stitches are made with trc which graphically makes the pattern bigger and it can look 60’s vintage style or high fashion style by contrasting colors. As a signature of my design, the waist belt is made by the technique of shirring with elastic band. This technique allows it to fit any waist size and it is very comfortable for wearing all day long. I’m in the process of the final check for this pattern. 🥰 ・ ・ ・ #crochet #crochetskirt #crochetpattern #crochetdesign #crochetshellstitch #lovecrochet #vintagecrochet #tightskirt #skirtdesign #creativefashion #wearablecrochet #amimono #yndskirt #かぎ針編み — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/ER38vpl

#crochet #crochetblanket #luxurylifestyle #vintagecrochet #fattoamano #antiquestyle #antiquecrochet #coperta_uncinetto #coperta_vintage #antiqueblanket #coperteantiche https://www.instagram.com/p/CikS_Y9o2wx/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Day 9 of @redthreaded #fallforcostume Is White This one was easy, to me, white is paper, the paper which holds the patterns, knitting and crochet, pre-cut, draft-at-home, illustrated, multi-size, modern, vintage, or antique, and the sources that help you pyt them together in a period appropriate fashion, or the magazines and newspapers that tell us what was in fashion when. Without paper all this would be much harder and the history of it all may just have disappeared, along with so many of the extant garments which simply were lost to time. But we have them, patterns over 100 years old, or people helping preserve the history by making patterns from extant garments like @theschoolofhistoricaldress1 , or redrawing antique and vintage patterns like @wearinghistory and others. So many people keeping fashion history alive by helping us keep record of what they wore, what they wanted to wear, and what actually survived. #sewing #fashionhistory #vintagesewingpatterns #antiquesewingpattern #patternsoffashion #schoolofhistoricaldress #wearinghistorypatterns #vintagepatternlendinglibrary #knitting #crochet #vintageknitting #vintagecrochet (at Harrisonburg, Virginia) https://www.instagram.com/p/B3aQus7JMZ_/?igshid=a9q64f7ceqhz
