I'm in Philadelphia today with some weird old man named Ben. I'm only letting him help with today's post because he says he's the guy on the $100 bill.💵
We have here a vintage US postcard image that appears to show Mr Bean and his girlfriend Irma Gobb, as children.
Whoever these kids are, they're quite strange. The boy has knees of different colors, and he's trying to light a string of firecrackers with an imaginary match. He's probably mansplaining something, because the girl is covering her ears and appears to be saying, "Nyah, nyah, I can't hear you."🙉
We're showing this image today, because it's American Independence Day, which is commonly referred to as "The 4th of July."
July 4th, 1776 is considered the date that America declared independence from Great Britain. That's not really the case though. The Second Continental Congress actually adopted a resolution of independence on July 2nd. John Adams was so excited about that date that he wrote home to his wife, "The second day of July 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival."
But it took two days for a final resolution of a Declaration of Independence to be made, and the public chose the date on that declaration, July 4th, as the date to celebrate.
Adams was not happy with this, and for the rest of his life he refused to recognize the 4th as the day of independence.😡 He turned down every invitation to festivities and celebrations that were held on that date.😤
July 4th did become an important date to him later, for a different reason. He passed away on July 4, 1826, on the date celebrated as America's 50th anniversary.🪦

On Monday, America will celebrate 246 years of independence. 🎉
Well, not total independence. We're quite dependent on China for low-cost consumer goods,📦 and we're dependent on other countries for oil since we consume more than we produce.🛢 I could go on, but it's national sovereignty we're celebrating, not economic independence.
And so, we'll celebrate our Independence Day on July 4th. With that only 2 weeks away, I thought I'd make one more push to sell some US patriotic images.🇺🇸
This vintage postcard shows a group of cloned boys wearing lipstick, blush, and US Navy uniforms, all marching single-file with blank expressions as though they're under mind-control. Observing them is one girl wearing a Musketeer's hat.
These old postcards often give accurate glimpses of history, but I can find no historical evidence showing that the Navy practiced such ceremonies. I did learn a few things about the US Navy though.⚓
Originally called the Continental Navy, its official founding date is October 13, 1775, almost 9 months before the Declaration of Independence was signed. Someone back then had a fascination with flying insects, because some of the first ships were called USS Wasp, USS Hornet, USS Fly and USS Mosquito. Quite unimpressive names, considering the British were sailing ships called HMS Invincible and HMS Resolute.
Of around 65 vessels, only 11 survived the Revolutionary War. When the war was over, they were sold, and even though the USA now had a coastline of over a thousand miles, it was decided that a navy was no longer needed. It was disbanded by Congress in 1785.
For almost ten years, pirates took advantage of US merchant ships without naval protection🏴☠ until the US Navy was permanently established in 1794.
The Father of the US Navy is considered to be John Paul Jones. It's also considered to be John Adams. And it's also considered to be John Barry. I don't know who the mother of the US Navy was, but she really must have gotten around if she didn't know which man was the father.
