The ultimate guide to being coquette as a hijabi girlie
Tumblr media
Being a coquette hijabi is so hard because so many of the key motifs (mini skirts/more revealing clothing, the literal meaning of the word, for example) go against what we believe in. But it's not impossible. So here are my personal favorite ways to be a coquette girlie without compromising my faith! (p.s thank you to @augusttheicedcoffeeaddict for reminding me to post this hehe ily)
Also!!! No hate to the coquette girlies who do wear mini skirts etc.
The white maxi skirt  🦢˚✧𓂃🩰 ໒꒱ ⋆ ˚ ⊹
Mini skirts are a staple in so many coquette outfits and so many people will try to make you think maxi skirts aren't cute but they're just haters. A cute sweater + a pleated or tiered white maxi skirt + some crafty layering has been such a lifesaving formula for me. Blouses work great for this too. And the things you can put on top of a white maxi skirt are endless. Pretty blouses, mini dresses, sweaters, sweatshirts, even cute tshirts with long sleeved shirts underneath. Same goes for denim skirts. I'm looking for one right now and I can't find any I like, but once I do I'll be unstoppable.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bowssss 🦢˚✧𓂃🩰 ໒꒱ ⋆ ˚ ⊹
Bows. Bows are THE coquette accessory. And, thank god, you don't have to wear a mini skirt to wear bows!
Put them on literally everything. If you want to put them on your hijab, you can use a safety pin to put it on the back of your head, or you could do what I usually do, which is put them in my hijab pins. Depending on the size you can make it as subtle as you want. I have a pinterest tutorial here. (The pic on the left is me!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Heart shaped sunglasses 🦢˚✧𓂃🩰 ໒꒱ ⋆ ˚ ⊹
Another coquette/vintage americana staple you can wear!
Berets 🦢˚✧𓂃🩰 ໒꒱ ⋆ ˚ ⊹
Same thing!
Fuzzy white earmuffs 🦢˚✧𓂃🩰 ໒꒱ ⋆ ˚ ⊹
These are SOSOSO perfect for winter. (pic on the left is me again heh)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
At home 🦢˚✧𓂃🩰 ໒꒱ ⋆ ˚ ⊹
So far, this has all been stuff just in the context of going out in public. At home, I highly recommend doing you hair in a coquette way and wearing things you can only have on in front of family. It's such a confidence booster. It's a bit of effort but it's so so worth it!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her bedroom is the window into the girl's soul 🦢˚✧𓂃🩰 ໒꒱ ⋆ ˚ ⊹
The coquette aesthetic is way more than just the clothes and hair. So if you really want to feel coquette, try and make your room as coquette as possible. Put up some coquette posters on your wall. A lot of coquette posters are haramcore and some people don't like putting up faces on their wall, so here are some really cute pics for inspo :3
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
What's in your bag? 🦢˚✧𓂃🩰 ໒꒱ ⋆ ˚ ⊹
Purses can make or break a good outfit. My biggest tip is to match them to your hijab. It pulls it all together. The last thing you want is for your hijab to feel like it's clashing with the rest of the outfit.
What's inside is important too! Inner beauty isn't just for living things. Keep whatever essentials you already have, plus lipgloss, a compact mirror bc no one's out here trying to have a bad hijab day, and a little bit of ribbon. Trust me about the ribbon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shoes!!! 🦢˚✧𓂃🩰 ໒꒱ ⋆ ˚ ⊹
Please don't wear a super cute coquette outfit and then wear tennis shoes. Just don't. Mary janes, Doc M's, and ballet flats are all really good choices.
Ik I probably sound like I'm obsessing over tiny things, but you kinda have to bc when you're breaking the mold every little thing matters.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lastly <3 🦢˚✧𓂃🩰 ໒꒱ ⋆ ˚ ⊹
Last but not least, do not ever ever let people make fun of you. If you're a hijabi coquette girlie, you probably have some form of a muslim community, and they probably won't dress in your style. That was my case, and when I first started wearing mary janes and lace gloves I got SO made fun of. Not from the adults, but from my friends. One girl called my mary janes dorky and said they annoyed her every time she saw them. I think she expected me to laugh, but you just have to keep a straight face and say to their face that you thought that was rude. She never called me dorky again 🤷‍♀️
Take this post as a reminder that you can stay true to your faith while looking fabulous. If you have any questions pls pls feel free to ask anything. Ily all honeys, bye ♡

She has a bridge, nose and belly button piercing and blue eyes. She's wearing a sleeveless denim vest, with a black tank top underneath and black denim shorts with purple fishnets underneath. She has a tattoo of a rose on her upper right arm and another of a sword on her inner left calf. She has pointed black nails and two bangles on her right wrist. She has black platform boots and has a freckles all over her body. Her hair is a vibrant purple in waves reaching her lower back. In the upper left corner is her in-game sprite by 'ConcernedApe' and the artist's signature 'Rapha3liii' is in the lower right corner. /.End ID]

The left side of her head is shaved while the right has straight, blue shoulder length hair. She has purple eyeshadow, pink lipstick and brown eyes. She also has gold helix piercings, a gold vertical eyebrow piercing and golden hoops in her lobes. She is smirking and looking to the right. She is wearing a layered red dress with a long pleated skirt. It has a white ruffled petticoat underneath. Under her red dress is a pink shirt with lantern style sleeves. She has a corset on over the dress with golden buttons and a miniature cape in dark red clasped to her shoulders. Two necklaces are hanging from under her shirt collar, one golden chain and the other a pendent of a 'Nazar'. She has long sharp purple acrylic nails and multiple rings on both of her hands. She is wearing dark red heels with button clasped straps. In the upper left corner is her in-game sprite by 'ConcernedApe' and the artist's signature 'Rapha3liii' is in the lower right corner. /.End ID]
[Image 3 ID: A digital drawing of Haley from Stardew Valley standing casually, smiling, with a tuft of her hair inbetween her fingers in one hand and blue eyes. She has golden blonde hair in waves just reaching her upper back. She has locks of hair over both of her shoulders. She has light blue eyeshadow and bright pink blush and lipstick, she also has a mole on her face just above her lips to the right. She is wearing a low crop blue blouse with short sleeves and a white lined flower pattern on it. She has pink nails and is wearing a necklace of a blue sea-shell with a golden chain and a bracelet with a golden chain and heart pendent. Her left arm is holding her hair while her right arm is crossed over her chest and resting on her other arm. She is wearing a pink pleated mini-skirt and blue heels with small straps around her ankles. In the upper left corner is her in-game sprite by 'ConcernedApe' and the artist's signature 'Rapha3liii' is in the lower right corner. /.End ID]
[Image 4 ID: A digital drawing with the three previously described characters all standing in a line. The order is Abigail to the left, Emily in the middle and Haley to the right. Each character has their in-game character sprite by 'ConcernedApe' on the upper left to them. The artist's signature 'Rapha3liii' is overlayed in three different places on the drawing. /. End ID]
This my first time ever writing image descriptions so please tell me how I did! I read some other blogs and advice prior to writing my own but I understand its likely I got some things wrong! Please let me know if I've formatted or written something in a way that makes the descriptions innacessible! Thankyou

Academia Aesthetics
Types of Girls
dark: black coffee and Victorian blouses. Candle lit room and messy desks, blotches of ink staining each page in every notebook. Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata playing in the background. Reading the classics and yearning for a love in a different era. Crying over The Dead Poet's Society every time you watch it, watching it over and over again anyways. Winter nights and the days ending too soon, never having enough time. Scribbled notes on scraps of paper and heated debates in the corridor at 9 pm. Missing a childhood you don’t remember well. A warm fireplace and falling asleep beside your best friend. Leaving notes in library books, waiting for a response.
grey: green tea the way your grandmother taught you to make it. The sound of rain early in the morning. Violin covers of popular songs. Historical romances and period dramas. Memorising every line from Little Women. A love/hate relationship with studying. Highlighted notes in one colour only. Thick sweaters and jeans. Converse and saddle bags. Writing in a journal and burning the pages. Heavy clouds and grey skies. The nostalgia found in a polaroid. Scribbling notes on the palm of your hand. Texting your friends goodnight too early, missing their closeness.
light: milk tea with more milk than tea. Blueberry muffins and vanilla ice cream. Taylor Swift and concerts in the shower, belting out lyrics to You Belong With Me. Cardigans and cafes in autumn, the smell of coffee and cinnamon everywhere. Reading The Iliad and Percy Jackson, just one or two chapters before class starts. Driving at sunset with friends. Beige coats and white turtlenecks. Your mother’s favourite tea set. Forgotten diaries with dried flowers spilling from the pages. Sticky notes in textbooks with more doodles than words. Forgetting the little details, remembering the big ones.
chaotic: hot chocolate and chocolate chip cookies. Lost textbooks and scattered notes. Colourful highlighters and doodles in the corners. The Neighbourhood and Nothing But Thieves constantlyon replay. Shakespeare and Oscar Wilde memes. The Catcher In The Rye and Dracula. Debating philosophy and conspiracy theories. Thick scarves and denim jackets. Quotes jotted down in your notes app. Sneaking out to see the stars at midnight and staying up till sunrise. Dancing in the rain. Swing sets and ice cream. Voicing out injustices, dreaming of making a difference one day.
theatre: forgotten cups of coffee. Printing scripts and memorising lines. Explaining common misunderstandings about Romeo and Juliet again and again. Last minute performances. Closets full of dresses and wigs. Masquerade balls and quoting actors. Sketching costumes behind your notebooks. Getting lost in daydreams and performances. Living the characters lives and relating to each and every one. Writing your own plays, performing them with friends. Greek tragedies and romcoms. Singing lyrics to your favourite musical. Re-watching it over and over again, missing that feeling of awe you've lost.
romantic: warm drinks with too much sugar and cream. Red velvet cupcakes and dark chocolate. Long flowy dresses and hoods. Playing Hozier in the middle of the night and dancing alone. Re-reading Pride and Prejudice and watching Me Before You too many times to count. Scribbling poetry in all your books. Sticking sonnets up on your walls, memorising each one. Giving your friends handwritten letters and vintage jewellery. Crying over The Song of Achilles, writing fanfiction to ease the ache. Calling your friends at 3 am to talk about the universe. Loving too easily, trusting too much. Missing a love you never had.
I know these have been done to death but I’m obsessed with these aesthetics. The vibes are just 👌🏻

YOUR Fashion Icons!
I couldn’t cover everyone you guys asked me for in one post, else we’d be here for a while! I picked a few of the top mentions, and a few to add a bit of contrast to hopefully hit as many styles as possible! I threw in a few of mine too as a bit of self-indulgence, but I hope you guys appreciate them too!
Old Hollywood: Marilyn, Audrey, etc.
I saw quite a few Marilyns and Audreys, as well as Ava Gardner and a Grace Kelly or two. I decided to group them together, but let me know if you’d be interested in a more extensive deep-dive.
To me, the thing that’s going to set you apart as vintage Hollywood is hair and makeup, especially a victory red lip, but that’s not my area of expertise, I confess! I also didn’t want to say “just wear vintage and vintage-inspired, duh,” because that’s cheap. I’m going to try to break down the looks.
Common elements are all designed to emphasise and create a traditionally feminine silhouette such as something to emphasise the bust and decolletage, cinch the waist, and skim the hips- be it pencil or flared at the skirt. Of course, this speaks to the times, but it can be recreated in daywear and nighttime glam by recognising the shapes you want to create. Ideas: a halterneck, a long-line necklace, a sweetheart or bardot (fitting) that reveals the decolletage. Pencil skirts and flared circle skirts are equally vintage, but we do not talk enough about a pretty little short/skort/romper situation.
But let’s also just normalise wearing big, fluffy robes that look like we murdered our fourth rich old husband as an appropriate outfit to buy groceries in.
Jang Won Young
Y’all are educating me, this was a fashion queen I was not familiar with and I’m interested. I’m going to be basing this off of what I see on the images tab, though, so I don’t know how accurate this will be!
She seems to have such a classic, pretty style that goes everywhere from the fashion girly uniform from a few years ago, to classic tumblr, to all the k-pop staples. She’s reminding me of Lara Jean Covey. What I’m largely seeing is a lot of tailored shorts, big poofy white blouses, and pastels. She seems to be in pink a lot, so she’s after my heart, and I’m seeing a lot of varsity stripes on socks, hems, etc as well as denim, especially shorts.
The elements I would use to emmulate her style would be some nice pairs of shorts- pastels and denim, perhaps- and black. I’m seeing frilly white blouses so a range with long and short sleeves and different details such as collars. Varsity jackets and socks in black, white, or pink would add to the vibe, and are going on my wishlist.
Jennie Kim
My blackpink heart! I’m happy. Her style is so ranged from like, that baddie kind of style to the Chanel. To me, I feel like black and white together can play into both of those styles, as well as a good pair of denim jeans. I’m also seeing bows coming up a lot, be it a pussycat bow on the top, a gorgeously big bow that takes up most of her top (I’m sure you’ve seen the iconic ‘fit with the pretty purple cardigan), and you can even do one on the hip on a skirt.
If you really want to emmulate Jennie, you could go a long way with a big gold buckle to look like the Chanel buckle… or get a real Chanel belt, I’m not stopping you. Pearl details are my favourite and also add to the classic Chanel look. Tweed goes a long way too.
I am consistently seeing black and white, with the casual side being a striped tee with baggy jeans, and the more classy side being matching Chanel sets.
You can find nice cardigans that dupe Chanel sets, and a simple skirt matching the contrasting colour can have a classy look.
Megan Thee Stallion
I’m not that familiar with her, but I know she eats red carpets for breakfast, and I stan. I’m going to use that as my main inspiration because I must say, I worship it.
I think that, in order to take inspiration from Megan Thee Stallion, you should go for bustiers, camisoles, and other pieces that take inspiration from lingerie, especially either in black or a very bold, strong colour like a vibrant orange or gold. You can go full red carpet with a long, sexy dress, but day-to-day wearing something that highlights your favourite parts of your body to show off such as a bodycon skirt or tight-fitting jeans.
Despite the oppulence of the dresses, the shoes, while usually high heels, tend to be quite simple and elegant and easy to dupe.
I’m seeing also this stunning black blazer from the 2019 VMAs with silver stud detailing. It’s paired with matching socks and black boots. You can find leather blazers, studded leather jackets etc and for a casual look, you can go for a black skirt or shorts with boots, and for a glam look, something with silver sparkles.
Jennifer Check
To whoever suggested this one, I love you.
We’re all thinking of the heart hoodie, so let’s start there. Given the surge of this kind of pattern in the past few years, this is probably pretty replicable. It can also be applied to blouses, sweater vests, and anything else you’d like for more of an influence than a recreation.
For the rest of her style, the key elements are cropping and/or low-rise- basically, we’re showing off skin around the midriff or stomach. She has another pink moment, but to me the key colour has to be a dangerous shade of red from the lovehearts to the fishnets… ....to the blood… Maybe we try to emmulate the blood instead of recreating that exactly- but more power to you if you go out and buy fake blood and make it part of your normal routine. Anyways, the fishnets are a nice little nod, as would a lacey texture, or like a pattern overlaid over another colour- she tends to wear a lot of black and white, so its one to consider.
My favourite moment is the long white dress (again, DRENCHED in blood) which I would nod to with a white blouse or skirt with a black bow detail and white accestories- or just go for it with gloves.
Hillary Banks
You’re not getting away without a hat for this one. The Hilary Formula is repeated regularly and its a 90s power suit moment. She wears short skirts, usually pencil skirts, with bold shoulder-padded blazers and a funky little hat. Rinse and repeat that, and you’re doing it, baby. I associate her with red, but anything strong and striking will give the effect you want, ideally in just as eye-catching a pattern.
She’s also a huge jewellry kind of gal, so more is more on this one- the gaudier the better. Gold, flower accesories, bold stones; rings a-plenty, earrings for the gods, and a chunky gold necklace.
You can modernise Hilary too because the look doesn’t go out of style, it just evolves. Personally, I would change up the blazer a little to a more modern silhouette. To me, that’s more tapered at the waist and less-boxy. If it were me, I’d go for a little bit of a shorter skirt. You can lean a little towards Cher and Dionne to keep it in the same decade, but slightly-less aggresively 90s.
But you must keep the hats. You will not change my mind.
Lady Gaga
This one was tough because her outfits range from aliens and Venus to red carpet glam. I feel like for Lady Gaga, there are still a few elements that you can go for like platform shoes, and geometric, angular pieces like shoulder pads or asymmetery but the main thing is pushing the boat out and trying new things.
But the simplest way to do that is looking into subversive basics. Try cut-out details, angles, jeans that button on a diagonal, and pushing the norm just slightly.
Lady Gaga’s big fashion thing is making it into art, a performance. Find pieces that feel creative and out there and try new jewellry, big chunky platform shoes, studs and details, and something that adds a bit of spice. Even if you add a neon earring to a plain black outfit, you’re pushing your own comfort zone.
Figure out what makes you feel not just confidant, but like a work of art.
Now we’re getting into a few of my icons…
Katie from Steal the Spotlight (YouTube)
This woman is my biggest fashion recs, the way she plays with fashion is so inspirational to me, even if its not that I want to to copy her literal style.
She layers and accesorieses like nobody’s business and blends different elements like J-fashion, K-pop influences and girly cartoons. The key aspects of her style are use of colour-co-ordination, layering pieces, and accesoriesing, but her range is truly everything from pastel princess to Misa Amane.
Sweater vests, harnesses, mini skirts, platform shoes, and leg warmers are huge aspects of her style, and the big go-to is colour co-ordination and theming outfits aggresively.
Regina Mills, Once upon a Time The Evil Queen of my Heart, Regina is always ready for mayoral duties, or murder depending on where the mood of the day takes her. Then there’s also the fairytale dresses that I dream about, honestly.
I’m going to need a collection of structured, elegant blazers and trousers, dresses, and skirts, and a bustier or two… or twenty in the theme colours of black, blue, purple, and red. I might swap the red out for pink for my own preferences but my eyes have already glazerd over daydreaming about her wardrobe. I have an eye out for some under-knee black boots.
In the Enchanted Forest, outfit inspiration comes from her tight corseted bodices, dramatic collars and necklines, murderous heels, and playing with txtures- leather, lace, and velvet come to mind.
Real-Life Princesses (Diana, Meghan, Kate etc)
Diana is back in public consciousness after The Crown, and for me, I love a good university sweatshirt to add a bit of academia to even a casual look. My favourites are also the masculine button-up shirts and structured trousers or jeans that read very old money. While I personally plan on swapping my colour palettes out a bit, true Diana styling would be neutrals with the shirt in white or perhaps blue jeans. For shoes, loafers.
She also had a fabulous elegant style featuring evening dresses and business-ready suits. This to me is the real-life princesscore standard. Daywear is often a blazer or jacket matching a knee-length dress underneath and usually neutral heels. This kind of look has been seen on Diana, Kate, and Meghan, and around the world on Princess Martha Louise of Norway, Princess Haya of Norway and Princess Mako of Akishino. Let me know if a full analysis of real-life princess fashion would be interesting to anyone!
Let’s talk about the details of the Revenge Dress, because that’s what we all really want to look like at all times: Its black, off the shoulder, draping in a bardot-style neckline below her shoulders and dipping into a sweetheart and drawing attention to the collarbone and cleavage.
It is asymmetric, wrapping tightly around the knees at an angle and creating an almost-slit. The shortr side plays host to the billowy drape of a diaphonous fabric.
She’s wearing pointed-toed black shoes, and a hardcore pearl choker with the most stunning sapphire by the looks of it…
This look deserves the long-lasting attention its had, it is genuinely stunning and is giving me so much inspiration.

Who wants to see some old cringe selfies of vintage millennial fashion?
So, the backstory behind most of these pics is way back in 2010 I got a job at Target for a few months and during that time most days I had to wear a red top with khakis as my work uniform and I very quickly started to get bored with the monotony. So I decided to do some bathroom photoshoots of the different outfits I had at the time besides the red tops I was wearing every day. I pretty much don't have a single one of these articles of clothing anymore, except for a couple of necklaces. Most of these I think I got rid of because I gained a lot of weight after I got a car, if not because my tastes evolved or they fell apart on me.
Tumblr media
This first collage is a bunch of all black outfits.
The scarf I'm wearing in the first one was a souvenir my sister got me from the gift shop at Alcatraz when she was on a school trip. It's got a fake stamp printed on it that says "Rejected: Too Cute".
Second outfit, I think I got from Forever 21, both the dress and the thigh high boots.
Third outfit was probably mostly made of JCPenny pieces. I used to wear it to a lot of job interviews, not that it helped because the job market sucked almost as much back then as it does today. Also, those heels were from Payless and although they were cute, they were absolute murder on my flat feet. I held onto that tie for a long time with no shirt to wear it with because they don't really even make women's blouses anymore that button all the way up and even when they do, I can't wear them because all button-up blouses gape on me. Also, can't really find vests anymore, for that matter.
Fourth outfit I think I got from Value Village.
First outfit bottom row came from Kohl's and I bought it after only looking at the hanger and not the actual tag, but despite the dress being an XS and me wearing a medium at the time, it miraculously stretched far enough to fit, so I kept it.
The off-shoulder top I got from a local retailer that is actually still in business today with a handful of locations that have shifted to different suites around town over the years, but never shut down.
The velvet outfit I believe was either a hand-me down or an old church outfit that used to be knee length before I cropped it into a hi-low skirt.
All of these outfits by the way I wore in my late teens and early 20s to school and walking around town before I had a car. Nothing I own now or have ever owned is a date outfit because I don't go on dates.
Tumblr media
First outfit in this teal/turquoise set is probably my most cringe. That headband was really ugly with my short hair, and I don't think that long top over a short skirt and cropped hoodie combo was a good look.
The top from the second pic came from a gift shop at Niagra Falls from a school trip I went on my junior year of high school. It originally had black felt ribbons, but the first time I washed it I didn't realize the ribbons weren't sewn on, so they came off and got destroyed, so I replaced them with turquoise ribbons that were sewn on.
Third top I'm pretty sure came from Gottschalks before it went bankrupt and got replaced by a Forever 21, if that doesn't carbon date me like the fossil I am.
The top in the first two pics on the bottom row I used to normally wear with a pair of black jeggings. Hear me out though, these were not yoga pants with a fake denim print slapped on top, they actually had texture like real jeans and I think a button and zipper even. The pockets were still fake, but they were actually sewn-in faux-pockets like they have on normal pants, not a print. They were basically just very thin, very elastic form-fitting jeans I wore so I could have a smoother silhouette under long shirts. I actually still own the necklace I'm wearing with that top, but I never wear silver anymore, so it's getting donated soon.
Last dress in the teal set is another piece I got from the same place my off-shoulder top came from. I might've even gotten them at the same time.
Tumblr media
First top I got from a specialty online goth fashion shop. I actually didn't have my own credit/debit card at the time because I was still in high school, but my sister told me if I gave her money and she didn't think it was cringe/inappropriate for school, I could show her things I wanted to buy online and she'd get them for me. So that star top was one of the things I got along with the goggles and fingerless gloves seen in other pics, and an assortment of other accessories from when I was deep in my Hot Topic Mall Goth Invader Zim-core aesthetic phase.
The corset I'm wearing in the next three photos had no boning in it, so it wasn't uncomfortable to wear, except for the fact that it didn't stay in place or hold its shape like a corset should. I got that corset from a local retailer that closed down, in a mall that has since become a dead mall.
In the middle row, I believe I got both the top and the cardigan from Forever 21.
The brown outfit in the middle of the middle I think I got from JCPenny, except the green top, which came from Forever 21. Shoes might've come from Payless. That was my second go-to job interview outfit and I miss it a lot. I tried looking for those pieces on Poshmark once so I could recreate it. But it turns out the brown top and skirt actually came from the junior's section, so there's no way even the largest size I could find it in would fit me now.
I think the silky green skirt and the green sweater in the next couple of pics also came from Forever 21.
The butterfly top on the bottom row I think came from the same store where I got my corset. I don't wear heels anymore, but I also don't wear converse anymore either because zero arch support is just as uncomfortable as heels on my flat feet. I don't wear headbands either because they aren't comfortable anymore. Every one I try just squeezes my skull too much.
The green bustier-looking top is another one of my most cringe outfits because it was constantly rolling up.
The next top after it is also pretty cringe, cause it's just an unflattering shade of neon green.
The last outfit was one of my most frequently worn from late high school and throughout college. I used to wear it with a pair of dangly guitar-pick shaped GIR earrings that my sister got me when she went on a trip and got to visit a Hot Topic before we had one locally. At some point I swapped out the GIR earrings for a pair of zipper pull earrings because my sister told me the GIR earrings don't go with the rest of the jewelry I wore with it.
Tumblr media
The navy crop jacket was another Forever 21 piece, and I think I got those agonizingly painful booties from there too.
Then there's my Butch Girl Style Icon Dib Membrane shirt that I had to alter to fit right because it only came in a men's size.
The next outfit below was a hand-me down velvet shirt/jacket thing that I turned into a dress.
Last outfit is probably my oldest. I think most of its components I got as far back as middle school, and I think they were hand-me downs even then.
Tumblr media
I used to love that purple cardigan until it got stretched the fuck out in the wash. I think it came from the same place as the off-shoulder top and the teal dress.
The next top I believe was another Gottchalks piece I might've had as far back as middle school. It used to be a hideous brown/olive green until I dyed it, but it was already getting threadbare even then.
The purple cowl-neck outfit I think I also got from the same place as the purple cardigan.
Last outfit is another one of my most cringe outfits with yet another overlaying piece that rolled up all the time.
Tumblr media
Closeups of some necklaces I wore in some of the above pics. I actually still have the black flower necklace, but that's another one that's getting donated soon because I don't wear silver anymore. I totally forgot it used to have another black chunky chain attached before I removed it. The soda tab necklace I made myself and painted with nail polish. I actually made several necklaces and bracelets out of soda tabs, some of which I handed out to my friends.
Bonus:
Tumblr media
Me in one of many iterations of a black belted jacket I've worn throughout the years. I don't have this specific jacket anymore, but once I started wearing them, I've never not owned a long, black belted jacket as my main staple piece of outer wear. So I've never really escaped my Zim-core roots.
This pic was taken by somebody at my college paper. They saw me waiting for classes to start and wanted a picture of me for an article on fashion. I got a few copies to show my family, but they also posted the article online. Not a lot of people saw it and there were only a couple of comments, but none of them mentioned my outfit and one of them said something to the effect of "None of these outfits are in style and the writer of his article has no business giving out fashion advice cause everyone knows Alaskans are always 5-10 years out of date on the trends".

repetition (II) - modern Tommy Shelby
Tumblr media
Part I
Three knocks on the door pulled Maria out of the deep focus she had on her laptop screen, words needing to be put on to the document about their museum trip this morning, about a piece of her choosing, but try as she might, nothing came to her.
She cracked the door, eyes growing wide as her now rather dressed down instructor stood before her. A navy sweater and denim replacing the suit ensemble from the day.
He must have taken out his contacts, round tortoiseshell glasses now perched on his nose.
“What are you doing, Tommy?”
“Asking if you want to go for that drink.” She smiled. It wasn’t a question, but a statement, because he knew there wouldn’t be a refusal.
“What about the others?” She rested her hip against the door frame, arms crossed, still blocking him from entering the room before she got a reasonable answer out of him.
“Jones and Taylor seemed rather enthralled with the promises the Red Light District has to offer,” he shook his head, “and Johnson was headed to a cafe, so I assure you, none of them will be awake before half-twelve tomorrow.”
She rolled her eyes, departing from the doorway and leaving the door open behind her as she turned to re-enter the room, allowing him to follow behind her and occupy the chair, as she took a strange stance between leaning and sitting at the foot of the bed.
Her brown hair, now unrestrained in comparison to the morning, fell over the shoulder of her mothers vintage yellow Pittsburg Steelers sweatshirt. Paired with leggings it made great pajamas. Not so much a great outfit to go for a drink in.
“I need to change,” Maria declared the words, rather unceremoniously, retrieving jeans and a blouse from the still unpacked bag stashed in the closet before retreating to the bathroom and closing the door with a click.
When she returned, he took note once again of the now unworn sweater. It hadn’t rang through before, yes she was American and studying on a student Visa, but she had lived in New York before emigrating, never talking much about childhood.
“Let me guess,” he twirled the gold lighter between his fingers (an anniversary gift from his now deceased wife, she had learned upon asking where it came from, that she never even lived long enough to pick up herself and give to him), “one of your parents took you to the Warhol museum, as a kid, fun, bright colors. That’s what did it.”
“Are we really going to start in on Warhol again?” She queried, shrugging on the jacket over the cream blouse.
“I always thought it was the exhibition at the Brooklyn museum, but it was before that,” his eyes narrowed as she waved him through the door, donning her purse and checking to make sure the door locked behind them.
“The Brooklyn Exhibition was just the most recent.” She admitted, pressing the button for the main floor in the elevator, forcing her heavy eyes to stay open in the warm enclosure.
As they exited, she stuffed her hands in her pockets trying to kill the urge that was fighting for the cigarette he was sure to light up once they were outside.
Plenty of walks through Birmingham already had him reading her mind, extending the pack as a peace offering, a precursor to whatever debate would ensue. She held back her own hair from the breeze so the fire didn’t catch as he used the gilded lighter to catch flame to the stick perched between her lips.
The walk was cool, brisk, silent, and rather short. Of course, this man, would find a whiskey bar worth venturing to in a whole other country.
“Maria, there has to be one piece of art you can’t stand, eh?”
They were sat as a pair at the bar, glasses filled in front of them. Her lips parted at the suggestion, digesting the question as much as she was taking in the Nikka Coffee Malt in her glass.
“It feels unfair to the creator to say I don’t like something. It isn’t their fault I just don’t like it.”
The building was filled with warm wood accents and black fixtures, the lighting accentuating the warmth to be found in the shelter from outside.
“So there is something.” She never really voiced many negative opinions as far as distaste right off the bat about a piece, so the revelation that there may have been something that she purely disliked, had his curiosity piqued.
She leaned back in her seat, turning to her right to look at him as he watched her intently. They were in their own bubble. The building wasn’t busy around them, but neither of them would have noticed regardless. Most of the country was opening back up. Bars only open until 10pm, regardless of the loosening of restrictions.
“Whistler’s Mother.”
A slight smile played at the corner of his lips, blue eyes glimmering, before giving a nod in acknowledgement. “Why?”
She hummed, uncrossing and crossing her legs again the other way in order to face him better, finding comfort in the way the conversation warmed her almost as much as her jacket did. Maybe some of it was the whiskey.
“Individually, it’s rather uncompelling,” she tried to picture the piece, by James Abbott McNeil Whistler (son of George Washington Whistler), of his mother, sitting and facing, staring rather bleakly, off the left side of the canvas. “Anna Whistler looks bored out of her mind. I give it credit that the execution, the technique, is top notch, it’s just, possibly, my least favorite.”
He was yet to speak, taking a long drink of the amber liquid before she started again, “The painting he’s placed going off of the right of the piece not coming to fruition gives it an uncomfortable imbalance and the negative space between the curtain to the left and the painting by Anna’s head just make it feel daunting, as if the camera is panning and someone is going to lurch in from just out of frame.”
He quirked an eyebrow, cocking his head as he listened to her being once more, “Don’t even get me started the lack of repetition it has as the series. But I suppose now you’re going to tell me it’s your favorite for some reason.”
He shrugged, taking another drink, as Maria tried to read his expression.
“Have you ever heard of the 55th Regiment of the Irish Canadian Rangers?”
She shook her head as she realized they were now rather situated quite similarly, knees brushing under the wooden bar as his arm rested across the back of her chair, fingertips brushing her shoulder.
“On my father’s side, shortly after the Great War, some of the men of the 55th Regiment that came to Europe in 1916 met up with members of my family, once everything was over. On my fathers side, they were Irish Travelers. One of the men that joined them had one of the enlistment flyers. For whatever reason it always got shuffled and passed around until my father ended up with it. My mother kept it.”
Maria was enthralled. He had never spoke this intently about much of his past before.
“The focal point of the flyer is Whistler’s Mother. It says ‘Fight for Her’ along the top. Other than painted horses and gypsy caravans, it was the first real art that I saw as a kid.”
She smiled, “Your family really roamed the countryside in wagons?”
“There was a resurgence of it in the mid-nineties after the Eastern bloc fell, but my parents lived that way long before,” he cleared his throat, sipping from the glass before continuing, “once we finally ended up living in Birmingham, with my aunt, my sister would bring home every book from the library she could get her hands on, everything from da Vinci and the Renaissance to Alphonse Mucha and Art Noveau, anything she could find.”
“So I’ve insulted a cherished memory, here I thought you grew up in some vast estate in the country. How about my plight,” she goaded, raising her own glass with a nod, “what have you thought makes me favor Warhol?”
“If it would have been Brooklyn, my guess would have been that experiencing art in that scale for the first time was something that tied in to being far from home for the first time. A fond memory of being in your own space. But Pittsburg is the home of the Steelers and of the Warhol museum, so I’m guessing an attachment due to childhood memories.”
“My father worked at Allegheny Technologies, the Steel Mill, for as long as he lived. My mother has been an employee of Pittsburgh Public Schools since before I was born,” she sighed, “when I was younger, they would give admissions passes to the Carnegie Museums, all four of them, to the teachers for the summers, for them and their families. My father never went with us, because he worked overnight 12 hour shifts, but it felt like we went there every day of the summer. When I got older I realized it was because my mother wanted to keep the house quiet so my dad could sleep.”
“The Warhol Museum is one of the four Carnegie Museums,” he nodded, not needing her to confirm the fact.
She smiled as the bartender let them know they would be closing in a half hour. How long had they been there?
She stretched, sitting straight in the chair before relaxing into it for a few more minutes, “Van Gogh, tomorrow?”
He nodded slowly, finding her interest in sticking to the set agenda rather endearing, “yes, Van Gogh tomorrow.”

I would like to propose a new clothing style/aesthetic: introducing ‘Sundaycore’
Mostly based on my own style, but here are some of examples of what I envision sundaycore looks like (for people with varying moods, many aesthetics, who contain multitudes like me):
My preference is mostly androgynous and modest, and mostly encompass 3 aesthetics: classic academia, 90s artsy/plant mom, and cool grandmacore.
- long plain shirts in solid colours or classic neutral tones
- also long checkered/plaid/stripes shirts
- long coats (I’m talking trench, pea, double-breasted, all of them)
- blazers (and and all, bonus if vintage/thrifted)
- pullovers and turtlenecks
- sweaters and vests
- creams, khakis, browns
- muted colours
- overalls (denim, corduroy, etc)
- loose blouses
- button up shirts
- boatline tops
- thin stripes on shirts
- long skirts
- high-waisted jeans
- colourful shirts (geometric shapes)
- mom jeans!!
Have suggestions? Drop ‘em in the comments!

Embracing Timeless Style: The Resurgence of Flare Jeans and the Kraus Jeans Influence
Introduction:
Fashion is a dynamic realm that often witnesses the cyclical return of trends from decades past. One such classic trend that has made a triumphant comeback is flare jeans. Known for their wide-leg silhouette that flares out from the knee down, flare jeans were immensely popular in the 1970s and 1990s. In recent years, fashion enthusiasts have rediscovered the allure of flare jeans, embracing them as a versatile wardrobe staple. This resurgence has not only revitalized a vintage trend but has also been influenced by contemporary brands that blend nostalgia with modern aesthetics. Among these brands, Kraus Jeans stands out as a noteworthy contributor to the revival of flare jeans, offering a unique blend of quality craftsmanship and style.
Flare jeans, with their distinctive wide leg, have reentered the fashion scene, challenging the dominance of skinny jeans. The renewed interest in flare jeans can be attributed to a desire for variety and a break from the ubiquitous skinny jean trend that has dominated the fashion landscape for years. The 1970s-inspired silhouette of flare jeans brings a sense of bohemian chic and free-spirited style, appealing to those seeking a departure from the sleek and form-fitting designs of skinny jeans.
Kraus Jeans, a brand synonymous with quality denim craftsmanship, has played a pivotal role in the resurgence of flare jeans.
