When The Body Speaks | Exciter (2001)
"Yeah it's...Yeah it is. It's very.. It feels very different. It was.. It felt very different when we were recording it and stuff. Um... Um.. and you know, there's.. there's a couple of songs on there, that... that are special to me. There's another one as well called "When the Body Speaks," which, um, you know is basically Martin and myself... Martin playing guitar, We, I recorded the vocal and he recorded guitar, and we.. together. It was a real special little moment in the studio and um...we to keep it like that, as much as we could. And we added strings and like this throbbing sort of bass thing underneath@. - Dave Gahan (13 марта, 2001, interviewed in the studio by Kevin & Bean)
"I think some of the sort of quieter more intimate stuff might be interesting to try, you know? It doesn't necessarily have to be exactly as it is on the album. Maybe we'll try some different things, breaking it down a bit more. For instance, when Martin sings maybe he'll do something more acoustic with the songs that he chooses. Maybe we'll do that together with other things as well. Like, for instance, "When the Body Speaks", when we recorded that initially, the first atmosphere that was set for the album was basically Martin playing guitar and me singing. Mark (Bell) got us to perform that in the studio, and there was some magic there happening, and so we built an atmosphere around that, and I think that can work as well live". - Dave Gahan (13 марта 2001, Exciter Tour Press Conference, Hamburg)
На концерте в Фениксе (США, 10.08.2001) он подметил, что: "A nice highlight was during "When The Body Speaks", when Dave turned to Martin halfway through the song and said "It's a beautiful song you wrote, Martin".
During "When The Body Speaks", David told Martin to get real close to him, since it was the last show.
"Songs from our new album like "When The Body Speaks" when Martin plays guitar with me - in the studio we recorded that song when pretty much it was Martin playing a riff on guitar and me singing and Mark Bell was producing the album. We could feel the energy in the room was good, so we just recorded it quickly. And that became the really the basis of that song... and it’s pretty much like it’s live too. Changed as a little live - Martin comes right over next to me to play guitar, we’re together, it’s cool, I like that". - Dave Gahan (27.08.2021, Press Conference, Tallinn, Estonia).
Siouxsie and The Banshees". (Dave Gahan: Depeche Mode & The Second by Trevor Baker in Rus.)
"Indeed, solo cellist Chandler and a five-piece string section were deployed with chilling effect on the dreamy When The Body Speaks, perfectly complementing Gahan's vocal and Gore's guitar without compromising the trademark Depeche Mode sound that Bell was determined to retain". (Stripped: Depeche mode by Jonathan Miller)
Mark Bell: "In the past I think they would have got Martin to play the guitar as perfect as he could. Then it probably would have been edited to make in even more in time before Dave sang over the top. So I sat them in the studio and recorded them performing together. I don't think they've done that for 16 years or more - apart from live performance. Then we wanted to take the acoustic aspect further and make it sound even more like an 'Unplugged' - type thing. Dave said he's got this friend who's a string arranger, so Martin and myself put the chords together and Knox did the rest". (Stripped: Depeche mode by Jonathan Miller).
Dave Gahan: "I'm not one of the most confident singers in the world. Mark was really encouraging, and he liked what I was doing. I need a pat on the back; I need that encouragement; I need to know that I'm bringing something to Martin's songs. Otherwise I wouldn't bother. I know I am - in my heart, but sometimes it's like, 'What am I doing here? Martin can sing this song. Why doesn't he just do it himself?' I felt like that a few times during the recording of [the] album, but Mark said: 'What you bring here is important; it's really valuable; it's part of Depeche Mode; and it's part of what becomes the song'. So he really encouraged me with that - and Gareth's great with that as well". (Stripped: Depeche mode by Jonathan Miller).

Scott Weiland’s Solo Debut Expanded For 25th Anniversary
’12 Bar Blues’ will re-appear in two different versions this spring
Written By Jonathan Cohen | March 31, 2023 - 10:29 am
Late Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland‘s 1998 solo debut, 12 Bar Blues, will be reissued in expanded form this spring by Rhino in celebration of its 25th anniversary.
First up on April 22 (Record Store Day) is a double-vinyl, newly remastered set marking the first edition of 12 Bar Blues in this format. The limited run of 7,500 copies includes three previously unreleased tracks: an acoustic take on the album’s “Barbarella” and two session outtakes, “Lazy Divey” and “Chateau Mars.” The latter two were considered for inclusion on 12 Bar Blues until very late in the process, and even appeared on promo versions sent to the press by Atlantic Records, but were ultimately cut.
A digital edition of the album follows on May 12, with five additional unreleased tracks. One of them, a demo of “Barbarella,” is out today (March 31) in tandem with a new 4K version of the song’s original music video. The others comprise three unheard Daniel Lanois remixes and a demo of “Desperation #5.”
12 Bar Blues originally appeared while Stone Temple Pilots was on a hiatus following its 1996 album Tiny Music … Songs From the Vatican Gift Shop. It was co-produced by Weiland with Blair Lamb and features guest appearances by Sheryl Crow, pianist Brad Mehldau, and a trio of musicians dubbed the Magnificent Bastards: Victor Indrizzo, Zander Schloss, and Jeff Nolan.

Dalton Cyr Releases New Single, “Dying To Love You”
Tumblr media
Multi-instrumentalist Dalton Cyr’s most recent single, “Dying To Love You,” dives into an all too familiar love story. Cyr draws in listeners by pouring his heart into the genuine lyrics, backed by a guitar-heavy pop melody. “Dying To Love You” is now available to stream on digital music platforms worldwide. Dalton Cyr has dedicated his life to performance arts since the age of 12 when he first began touring. This experienced background in the industry shines through in his vocal performance, where his falsetto takes center stage, highlighting the delicate love story of “Dying To Love You.” Cyr’s vocals aren’t the only impressive sound on this track, as a short bridge boasts his talent on the guitar as well. The young singer-songwriter may come off as a hopeless romantic in his latest single, but the love story presented is far from perfect. “I wrote this song to capture the helpless feeling of being trapped in a hot and cold relationship,” explains Cyr. “The toxicity of emotional high highs and low lows takes a toll on the psyche, hence the title, ‘Dying To Love You.'” The lyrics surround a yearning for love, but not without recognizing the difficulties of a relationship. Cyr’s raw vocals help to paint an intimate look into the song’s romantic narrative. While Cyr is the lead creative mind on “Dying To Love You,” other instrumentalists are seen with Sean Hurley on bass, Victor Indrizzo on drums, and Roger Manning playing the keyboard. The single was produced, mixed, and mastered by Mikal Blue (OneRepublic, Colbie Caillat, Jason Mraz). 21-year-old Florida native Dalton Cyr is a high-energy performer who captivates audiences with powerful vocals and lively guitar riffs. This clean, string-dominated sound draws inspiration from artists such as John Mayer, Ed Sheeran, and Jack Johnson. As an actor with credits in Pretty Little Liars and A History of Radness, Cyr feels more than comfortable onstage. He has performed live on multiple tours in front of audiences as large as 50,000, opening for artists such as Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat. “Dying To Love You” is the latest emotionally-driven single from the multi-talented Dalton Cyr. A music video for the song will be released on June 21st. “Dying To Love You” is now streaming on all digital platforms. Retronaut Selects: Circus Of Power - Magic & Madness (1992)
Tumblr media
I first heard about Circus Of Power when I was going through posters with my dad and I saw that he has an original promo poster for Magic & Madness.
I got a new cassette player as a gift for graduating college earlier this year, and I have an original cassette sampler of Magic & Madness which I finally listened to, and I just had to hear the full album.
I gave this album a listen, and it's awesome!! It's very unique because Circus Of Power was around a few years before the grunge boom of the 1990s, but they were still around into the grunge era, and this album is actually one of their more underrated albums because it has a melodic element which is different from what their fans were used to...and just as you'd expect, a band gets shunned when they are different.
To me, I think that it's awesome that they mixed their grit and melodic elements together, because usually these bands lack grit or melodic elements and I like bands who mix it up.
So...if you want to hear an album that dares to be different...hit play and listen to Magic & Madness.
Essential Tracks: Poison Girl, Mama Tequila, Waitin' For The Wizard

Interview with Cindy Alexander
We had the pleasure of interviewing Cindy Alexander over Zoom video!
Singer-Songwriter CINDY ALEXANDER releases her new single, “Broken but Beloved,” from the upcoming, While the Angels Sigh, her tenth studio album. “Broken but Beloved,” a song about impermanence, was recorded with Grammy award-winning producer and engineer Ross Hogarth at Sunset Sound. It was the last in-person session before the Los Angeles lockdown order took effect in March 2020. Cindy’s dear friend and touring buddy, Michael Bacon (one-half of the Bacon Brothers and award-winning composer) contributed cello from his studio in New York. After recording his part, he sent Cindy a note, in which she found the title of her new record:
Set for release on April 23, 2021, While the Angels Sigh is at once a musical affirmation of personal power and grace, and an acceptance of human weakness and fallibility. Cindy has written a songbook for the “sandwich generation,” with wisdom for millennials, and gratitude to the generations that came before her.
During the most stressful time of her adult life, Cindy Alexander wrote and recorded her new album. Through the most trying of conditions - her mother dying from dementia, navigating through the pandemic and civil protests, all while teaching her twin daughters from home during the “Safer at Home” order, Cindy’s strength and creativity came to the fore.
Cindy entered Sage & Sound Studio at the end of 2019 with a dream team of musicians, led by producer/bass player Sean Hurley (Vertical Horizon, John Mayer, Colbie Caillat) and producer/ drummer Victor Indrizzo (Alanis Morissette, Sara Bareilles, Lizzo). Other A-list players on the album include guitarist David Levita (Alanis Morissette, Lana Del Rey, Sheryl Crow) and piano from Michael Farrell (Alanis Morissette, Macy Gray).
The remaining tracks were recorded socially distanced during last year's lockdown, transferred back and forth between home studios before finally finishing up in Cindy’s bedroom at her new home in Big Sur. Although the creative process was a challenge, the result is a triumph. While the Angels Sigh is an achingly personal album that speaks to and for all of us, and a musical tribute to a broken but beloved humanity.

American pianist Brad Mehldau can sound like Bill Evans, and he can rock with the best of them. But, as Russel Carlson wrote, his "mood remains intact: he gets woeful on nearly every track".
This piece is not so much woeful as robustly melancholic. From Brad Mehldau's 2002 album Largo (Warner Bros./Nonesuch 9362481142), here's "When It Rains".
Musicians on this album:
Brad Mehldau, piano, vibes Larry Grenadier, Darek "Oles" Oleszkiewicz, Justin Meldal-Johnson, bass Matt Chamberlain, Jorge Rossy, Jim Keltner, drums Victor Indrizzo, drums & percussion Jon Brion, guitar, guitar synth, piano percussion
