The king of fighters 99 final krizalid

#The king of fighters 99 final krizalid series#
When a Striker jumps in, they perform a set action and then leave they have no life bar but they can only appear a finite number of times per match.Ĭhanging the number of characters per team was big, but the biggest change was to the roster of characters itself. At the start of each battle, players choose three of their selected characters to fight with the fourth serving as a "Striker" who can be summoned at any time during the match. The King of Fighters '99 shook up the format by upping the number of characters per team to four. By comparison, the KOF style of choosing three fighters but only using one at a time was less fresh. Even other Neo Geo games like Kizuna Encounter featured swappable fighters. Capcom's VS-series of Marvel fighting games were 2-on-2 contests where switching fighters mid-match was an essential mechanic. But by 1999, there were a lot more team-based fighting games on the market. When The King of Fighters debuted in 1994 it was groundbreaking for players to choose a squad of characters instead of just one. Which means on Septemexactly one year after KOF '98 - SNK released The King of Fighters '99 on the Neo Geo and in doing so tried to upend the entire series.Ī lot can change in five years, especially in the world of video games. The show must go on and it must be ready in the next 12 months. But for KOF, an annual franchise at the time, that was not an option.
#The king of fighters 99 final krizalid series#
For some video game franchises, achieving that level of greatness means years of iterative special tweaked editions and possible spinoff series before eventually making a proper sequel (I say as I glance at Street Fighter II). As previously established here on Retronauts dot com, The King of Fighters '98 is my favorite video game of all time, a culmination of universe-building across multiple independent creations that resulted in a massive collection of interconnected characters who hang out together and also punch each other's lights out.

Retronaut Selects: Queen - The Works (1984)
Tumblr media
This is Queen, so I won’t tell you my whole Queen story today, but I will at some point in the future.
Anyway, I acquired “The Works” as a promo LP from eBay a number of years ago.
This album includes “Radio Ga Ga”, “Hammer To Fall”, and “I Want To Break Free”, all of which were included in the iconic Live Aid performance!
Man On The Prowl has always been a standout track on this album ever since I first heard this album.
I’ve always thought that this album has an interesting momentum to it, there’s just a certain greatness to how each song leads into the next.
Each song is it’s own little universe and as a whole it is excellent.
The Works is just one of the many amazing chapters of Queen.
Essential Tracks: Man On The Prowl, I Want To Break Free, Keep Passing The Open Windows
Listen on Spotify: The Works

“Flip Grip” brings classic arcade screen orientation to portable Switch
Tumblr media
Video game collectible maker Fangamer is now seeking Kickstarter funding for the Flip Grip, a new Nintendo Switch holster that lets you more easily and portably play select games in their vertical "TATE mode" orientation.
The Flip Grip was first publicly mulled last April by Retronauts podcast co-host and classic gaming expert Jeremy Parish, who's working with engineer Mike Choi on the device. Parish then teased the grip in March as a way to hold the Switch and two Joy-Con controllers comfortably in your hands with the screen oriented vertically.

Retronaut Selects: Rex - Rex (1976)
Tumblr media
I’ve always known about Rex Smith, but I didn’t know until I did some research, that his first two albums are actually rock albums!
The world knows him as a teen idol, but he wasn’t always one.
Rex has a brother named Michael who is the lead singer of Starz. Rex has a  fellow in his band named Orville Davis. Orville Davis eventually became the bass player for Starz during the era of “Coliseum Rock”.
It’s something that not too many people know unless you dig a little deeper into Rex Smith.
I actually got two copies of this album, both are promos, but one is a regular label and the other is a white label promo. I couldn’t say no to white label promo for just a dollar.
One day, I looked it up online and I really liked it! More than I initially expected because I wasn’t sure it was going to be like.
I think music sounds better on vinyl because there’s something about putting the needle down on a record and listening to it. It’s really easy to look an album up on a streaming platform, but there’s no better way to hear music. There’s something about taking an album out of the inner sleeve and putting it on the turntable.
All I can say is that it’s cool and you’ll have to listen to it to understand why.
Essential Tracks: Trouble, Violent Playground, Feeling Better
Listen on Spotify: Rex

Retronaut Selects: Platinum Blonde - Contact (1987)
Tumblr media
I was introduced to Platinum Blonde through my dad’s cassette collection.
He had an original copy of “Alien Shores” and I recall “Situation Critical” and “Crying Over You” always sticking out to me.
I used to have my cassette time at night after dinnertime, but I only had about 15 minutes to listen before I had to shower and wrap up for the night.
It wouldn’t be until the following night that I got the time to listen to some more since I was always busy with stuff for school.
I got into Platinum Blonde and from then on, I was on the hunt to find their complete catalog.
I currently own “Standing In The Dark” and “Contact” on vinyl but I’m still on the hunt for “Alien Shores”.
Oddly, I never knew about “Contact” until I had seen it online when Oldies.com was having their big warehouse closeout sale.
I made some time to check it out and it is fantastic.
It’s a really cool 1980s album and it still utilizes real instruments so it doesn’t sound so digital, there’s still a human touch to it.
Essential Tracks: Contact, System, Tough Enough
Listen on Spotify: “Contact”

Retronaut Selects: Charlie Puth - Voicenotes (2018)
Tumblr media
The first Charlie Puth song I ever seriously listened to was “How Long” after I saw him perform it one night on The Late Late Show With James Corden, and I loved everything about it.
I followed each single until this album came out.
I remember the first time I listened to “Voicenotes” in full and it was during one of my final exams for one of my semesters of college.
This album is excellent, and it stands out in comparison to most pop albums released today.
It has this “difference” in the fact that it isn’t mindless pop music, and it’s more musical.
It’s music you’d actually want to sit down and listen to.
Essential Tracks: How Long, BOY, Somebody Told Me
Listen here: Voicenotes

Retronaut Selects: Judas Priest - Sin After Sin (1977)
Tumblr media
I got insanely into Sin After Sin in 2014 after Redeemer Of Souls was released and I felt inclined to rediscover all the Priest albums.
Judas Priest was all I listened to that summer, and I gained a new love for their work.
I recall getting super into Ram It Down, Point Of Entry, and Hell Bent For Leather.
From Starbreaker to Dissident Aggressor to Diamonds and Rust, Sin After Sin is an amazing listen and an underrated classic in the Priest catalog.
Essential Tracks: Starbreaker, Dissident Aggressor, Call For The Priest/Raw Deal
Listen Here: Sin After Sin

Retronaut Selects: Beth Ditto - Fake Sugar (2017)
Tumblr media
I first heard “Fake Sugar” after my dad was talking about an article he read about Beth Ditto in an issue of Magnet Magazine.
“Fake Sugar” is a really interesting album because has a great blend of cool sounding music and relatable lyrics.
It has a great flow, and as a result, it is an excellent album!
Essential Tracks: Savoir Faire, In And Out, Oh My God
Listen here: Fake Sugar

Retronaut Selects: Clocks - Clocks (1982)
Tumblr media
This was an album that I found at the same time as a band called Balance.
You know the story. I saw it. I left it. It stayed.
I got it the next time, and I love it.
I had this album for quite a while before I really sat down and listened to it though.
I actually heard Clocks for the first time on a compilation on Spotify, called “Heard It On The Radio”, which is actually an ironic title because none of the songs on those compilations were actually radio hits but instead songs that someone liked and compiled.
There’s a lot of great stuff on them though, a lot of stuff you don’t hear about these days.
When I finally listened to their album, I loved it.
It has this awesome 1980s vibe to it, and it’s just so cool.
Don’t sleep on these guys because they are spectacular.
Essential Tracks: 19, Nobody’s Fool, Here They Come
Listen on Spotify: Clocks

Retronaut Selects: Cornershop - When I Was Born For The Seventh Time (1997)
Tumblr media
Finding out about Cornershop happened because of my dad talking about a video he remembered seeing on MTV years ago, but he couldn’t remember the exact artist or song, but he recalled everything about the video.
We had days of endless Google searches to try and figure out but we had no luck.
During one of our record store trips to Double Decker Records, we ran it past our friend, Chris.
He figured it out. The tune was “Brimful Of Asha” and the band was “Cornershop”.
Soon after this, Chris surprised one day when we came to the store with a CD copy and we’ve listened to it countless times since we got it.
It is simply awesome.
Essential Tracks: Brimful Of Asha, Funky Days Are Back Again, Good Sh**

Retronaut Selects: Triumph - Allied Forces (1981)
Tumblr media
I was introduced to Triumph one night when my dad was spinning vinyl and he was spinning his original copy of "Never Surrender".
I recall that it was a really interesting album, and I saw that he had the whole Triumph catalog and one day, I wanted to hear more of their work.
I had burned copies from my dad's original CD editions and put them on my offline Blackberry, and I remember listening to them during the 2018 winter storms when we were living at a motel since our power was out from the storms.
I got really into Progressions Of Power and Allied Forces one day when I was studying.
Allied Forces is an excellent album because it has this amazing flow to it, and it's a really cool sounding album. From "Fool For Your Love" to "Allied Forces" to "Fight The Good Fight", it is full of awesome rock music and amazing lyrics too.
Essential Tracks: Fool For Your Love, Fight The Good Fight, Say Goodbye
Listen Here: Allied Forces

Retronaut Selects: Liar - Set The World On Fire (1978)
Tumblr media
I recall finding about Liar  from Japanese music magazines and through record shopping too.
I had a copy of this album on Spotify and I used to listen to it every now and then.
When I saw it on vinyl, I felt really inclined to own my own copy of it.
I got it for Christmas 2015 along with a bunch of other cool albums!
It’s an awesome album. It has an interesting balance of slower and faster songs on it.
It gives a real concept album vibe because it has an interesting parallel to the ups and downs of life. There’s a part of all of us that wants to be successful but there’s burdens in everything.
That’s my thoughts, but check this album out and see what you think.
Essential Tracks: Set The World On Fire, Town Of Evil People, I’m Calling
Listen on Spotify: Set The World On Fire
