Anthony Michelli Vater Drumstick Winter NAMM 2017

Drummer, educator, and clinician Anthony Michelli was on hand at Winter NAMM 2017 to tell us about his new signature drumstick model from Vater Percussion: AM 595 Player’s Design drumsticks.

Just under a 5B model in size and weight (16″ long by .595″ in diameter), Michelli’s design principle focuses on versatility, an all-purpose stick suitable for various types of stylistic applications while ensuring the maximum bounce and balance throughout. Vater states that the acorn tip “accentuates the full and complex tonal frequency range inherent in both drums and cymbals.”

“The concept of this stick came to fruition over time as I found that slightly thinner sticks would eventually become less balanced as they would wear from usage,” Michelli says, “whereas the larger diameter ones often felt too weighty, potentially maxing out sound thresholds in certain situations. As a result, we developed what sounds, feels, and reacts like a refined instrument in and of itself with this unique AM 595 model.”

If you don’t have this transcription handy I can pretty much guarantee you’ll lose your bearings during the intro of this song and may not regain them until halfway through the verse (you can find the transcription in the July 2011 issue of DRUM! Magazine). This groove and the guitar part sound like they’re in an odd-time signature but they aren’t. Dino Campanella accents the hi-hats very heavily on the eighth-notes but is usually ghosting the e’s and ah’s between them. The heavy dose of compression on the room mikes helps make the drum groove pump.

Rusty Burge is Professor of Percussion at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. He is also a member of Percussion Group Cincinnati with whom he has performed extensively throughout North America, Europe and Asia.

Recent performances include the Japan World Drum Festival, Chinese International Music Festival, Taipei International Percussion Convention, the Ravinia Festival and numerous PASIC Conventions. He was formerly principal percussionist with the West Virginia Symphony and plays extra with the Cincinnati Symphony. He received his undergraduate degree from the Eastman School of Music and a masters degree from CCM.

Professor Burge teaches percussion, jazz vibraphone and directs the CCM Steel band. He is an active jazz vibraphonist who has recorded for Summit, J Curve Records, CBS Masterworks and Telarc. Recent performances with Peter Erskine, Ted Nash, Rich Perry, Dave Liebman, Rufus Reid, Steve Allee, Roland Vazquez and Michael Spiro, His latest recording Transitions with Kim Pensyl on Summit Records received rave reviews from Jazz Times and All About Jazz. Mr. Burge’s new book Method for Vibraphone will be released this fall.
