What kind of music do you listen to? And got any recommendations? Anything obscure or not talked about enough in your opinion?

I have pretty basic ass music taste, tbh!! Like don’t be mistaken lol. With Chinese music, I like folk and folk rock for the most part LOL. Songs my dad used to play on loop on long drives 😆. I guess some of those might be considered obscure to non Chinese people, assuming they probably get into contemporary Chinese music first (but I'm sure my Chinese/diaspora followers will know these... maybe?)

Basically I inherited my Dad's music taste

Dao Lang is also a favorite I got from my dad lol. For younger folk/rock singers, I really like 赵雷/Zhao Lei and 刘森/Liu Sen (华北浪革).

Li Ronghao is another younger favorite artist of mine.

I would also say that any longer songs that I've translated (#music tag) is one that I like also.

I don't think I listen to anything too obscure non-Chinese wise. I listen to a lot of like Motown, dad rock, 60s/70s folk rock, basically. I dont listen to the radio or streaming platforms, so there’s only so many ways I can find new music. I like 90s/early 2000s pop and R&B lol. 90s kpop also. One of the CDs my dad used to play on loop was Celine Dion's album "Let's Talk About Love", so I have every track in that album imprinted permanently in my brain. Uhh… I like Marc Anthony’s earlier stuff also, like Contra la Corriente, basically.

Anna Leone is a newer indie artist I like.

JMSN has a couple songs I like.

Vicky Tafoya is also a newer artist I found recently.

And then I guess I'll leave off with the two songs I've probably been listening to the most recently:

...and Stevie Wonder - Master Blaster (Jammin') (whoops, went past the video link limit). Charles Bradley is also a singer I discovered recently (too late, tho, RIP).

Also Yoon Jongshin, Wheesung, and Lim Chungjang are the kind of Korean singers I listen to (off the top of my head). Tears at the End of the Sky by Junyfore is one of my favorite songs. I like Korean rock as well (blanking on a bunch of songs names right now, though—I'd have to check my phone because it's not in my current library, and that's basically what I listened to for a while after I stopped listening to kpop so much.

I haven’t seen Project Runway, but I am always here for Mulan retellings/mashups/inspired-bys, and Spin the Dawn is a lot of fun in that regard. Our heroine, Maia, has been the person holding her family together after her mother’s death. Her two oldest brothers died in war, and the third was left seriously wounded, which means when the imperial summons arrives, the only option is her father. And since her father really isn’t an option, Maia disguises herself as her wounded brother and heads for the palace in her father’s place.

While there’s definitely a measure of wanting to protect her family (her father’s condition, winning would pull her family out of poverty), Maia’s other main motivation for taking on her brother’s identity is to prove herself. She is a fantastic tailor who has been held back by society, and she believes she has the skills to win the post for the best tailor in the land. Even if the safest thing would be to fail the contest immediately and return home, Maia puts everything she has on the line. She’s unprepared for the politics and the sabotage and the backstabbing (and the magic!), but she forges ahead anyway, and that determination serves her well throughout the rest of the book.

Because once the contest is over, the real trial begins: making three legendary dresses with impossible materials. While the first half of the book was Project Runway, the second half of the book is a quest/adventure story with Maia and Edan. The trials to obtain the laughter of the sun, the tears of the moon, and the blood of stars were imaginative, appropriately difficult, and entertaining set pieces, but what I appreciated most about the quest was the opportunity to develop Edan from a mercurial ally to a love interest I was happy for Maia to pursue and be pursued by. Their relationship carries the second half of the book—and sets up the high stakes for the sequel, which I am definitely interested in reading.

Recommendation: Get it soon. Spin the Dawn has an engaging heroine, and fun romance, and high-stakes politics, fashion contests, and dangerous quests. Maia’s story is an entertaining one, and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens to her and her love interest in the next book.

And It All Comes Down

((I couldn’t wait for someone to send me the ask. So here’s an entry for the ‘Game Over’ meme. If someone sends the ask, I’ll write more. Warning: Lots of Death, mostly not graphic, but lots of it.))

Norhi was at her mother’s home when the linkpearl call came. She leaves the room with her hand pressed to her ear. “Nhie’a?”

“Nor--zzzkrt -- Norhi!?”

“Nhie’a? I’m here. You’re breaking up.”

“Norhi! Get to --zzrksht-- dders! Lims--gzzrhts-er attack!”

A sound of an explosion breaks through the linkpearl, before the line goes dead. Norhi taps the pearl, calling, “Nhie’a? Nhie’a!”

At this point, her father, P’rischy comes darting in the door with a pale expression. “Norhi! Limsa’s fallen! Get to the shop! Pack up! They’ve ordered the evacuation of the Twelveswood already!”

Norhi blinks and then pales. “Oh no... Nhie’a. Who’s attacking? Garlemald?”

P’rischy nods. “They’ve got a whole army of large warmachina. With... some sort of weapon that vaporizes its targets. The Adders are deputizing the Wailers. Let me get your mother going and I’ll follow you to the shop.”

Norhi nods and turns to go fetch Crystal. P’rischy meets her at the gate and they make the dash for the East Shroud. Some hours of panicked packing, they have the cart loaded and hitched to Crystal. They start down the road, to meet up with the rest of their family and the group heading for Ishgard. 

But then a large machina drops out of the air, landing on the road. From it streams several Imperial Soldiers. P’rischy rears back on his own chocobo. He turns and looks at Zuki, who was on Crystal’s back. “Go for Ul’dah! Take an airship from there! Go!”

He then frowns sadly at Norhi. “Tell Yhuna and the twins I love them.”

Zuki was already turning Crystal and the cart, while Norhi clutched Vhene to her chest. “Dad! No!”

P’rischy dismounted and turned to face the soldiers, as Zuki started the cart at a run back down the road. They get almost to the Thanalan border, when an explosion rocks the road and sends the cart sprawling. Norhi wraps around Vhene as she flies out of it, landing on her side and back with a pained hiss. 

She looks up to see Zuki cutting the straps that tethered Crystal to the cart, seeing the teal feathered draft bird leap to her feet and fluff herself out. And beyond that, she sees several Imperial Soldiers step out from the bushes. 

Zuki looks at them and then looks at Norhi, his face set in grieved determination. “Norhi. Go. I love you.”

He then pulls out a pair of patas and charges the soldiers. Crystal follows, squawking a chocobo’s war cry. But Norhi snarls and pulls out her wand, hoisting Vhene to her safe hip. She starts throwing healing spells, trying to help her husband live. But then the machina arrives. A zip of something laser like, burns a line along the road. Part of Zuki just disappears with a poof of ash. He turns as he falls, eyes already blank. 

Norhi screams in horror and watches as Crystal charges the machina. Norhi chokes back a sob and pulls her magic to her, teleporting herself and Vhene to Ul’dah. 

She drops to her knees in the aetheryte plaza, already seeing it was full of terrified refugees from Limsa and Gridania alike. And that’s when she felt the snap, inside her mind. --My child. Live.--

Norhi sits back on her knees, eyes staring blankly in shock. “Sahlia... no.”

She feels a pair of gauntleted hands take her shoulders, a voice asking her questions. “Madam? Madam, hello?”

A conversation happens next to her. She can’t register what’s being said. Or who’s talking to her. She feels the hands pull her to her feet and direct her out of the plaza, to The Goblet. She starts to come to herself, when she realizes they’ve led her to the Bellworks. A Brass Blade is with her, and was talking to Brave Horizon. “She teleported in and instantly went into shock. I’m lucky I recognized her. There’s a lot of people streaming in.”

Brave nods with understanding severity. “Of course. Thank you for bringing her to us. We’ll take care of her.”

The Blade smiles grimly and then starts, turning and pressing a hand to his ear. He listens and answers with a soft affirmative. His lips are set in a frown when he turns back. “Gridania’s now gone too. Scouts have spotted the army moving for Thanalan. They’ve ordered Ul’dah’s evacuation. They’ve also requested that any companies able to fight please report to the front lines. I need to go.”

Brave sets her hands on Norhi’s shoulders. “We’ll have our combat capable there as soon as we can.”

The Blade salutes and then sets off at a run. 

Norhi hugs Vhene and looks up at Brave. “Zuki’s gone,” she whispers, ears wilted and lips trembling as she starts to break down again. 

She feels Brave hug her for a moment, before steering her inside. She’s handed off to someone. Elliot maybe? 

By the time the sun was setting, one of their airships was making for Ishgard, with Norhi and half of the Bellworks people and materials on it. The rest were making their way to the front lines. 

Lord Integris Shadowstar meets Norhi at the airship platform, offering what he can to the Bellworks, alongside House Dufresne. Norhi retreats to the house, where she cries on her grandmother. Mharithosa had gotten a linkpearl call from Yhuna. P’rischy and the kids hadn’t arrived. And then the call cut out. And they hadn’t been able to raise them back up on the line. And they hadn’t arrived in Ishgard. 

By the time dawn comes, Norhi was both numb and raw. Her only family left was here in Ishgard. How many of the Bellworks had survived? What would she do without her tribal home?

But then Sirus came in, wearing his armor. “Ul’dah’s gone. They’ve got airships arriving with the remains of their military.”

Norhi takes up Vhene and runs for the airdocks, seeing a Bellworks ship docking. It was battered and barely remaining airborne. The number who disembark was barely a third of who’d gone to to fight. Brave was carefully carrying Arcian from the ship. Wyda and Vicky were both limping along, with a bandaged up Max behind them. Norhi looked around and spotted Kail’s ship waiting to dock as well. She then looks to her side, seeing Elliot and Nolanel step up next to her. Elliot frowns sadly. “They’re already coming for Ishgard.”

His mouth twists in displeasure as he then adds, “The... dragons... have answered our call for help. They’re going to join the Alliance for a last stand here.”

Norhi nods and turns to help the Bellworks get settled. 

As the remains of the Alliance get set up, Norhi is sent back to the lines of the civilians. She stands up on the edges of The Pillars, with Vhene cradled to her shoulder. The war machina arrive at the same time as the dragons do. And the fighting breaks out. 

Norhi watches in horror as several of the larger dragons are downed within the first bell of the fight. She could see flits of the Ul’dahn and Gridanian banners out there. She thought she spotted her friends. And then she hears it, the call for evacuation. 

Norhi hugs her child and kisses the top of her head. “Vhene, my daughter, my darling. I’m sorry. I love you.”

She then passes the child to her grandmother. Mharithosa shakes her head, but doesn’t get a chance to object. Norhi just smiles sadly. “I have to. They need me. Keep her safe.”

She then summons the bit of adventurer magic, changing to her conjurer’s gear. She watches as Integris takes his wife by the shoulders, pulling her back. Norhi then turns and runs, looking back only once, before pressing her hand to the aetheryte shard. 

When she arrives at the Steps of Faith, it was chaos. The line had already been broken. Norhi takes her wand and dives in, soon finding her company and friends. She makes her stand there. Until there was no more left.

Your Worst Nightmare has some very creative and beautiful worldbuilding, involving a city built on and inside a giant wooden dragon, that is alive but asleep, and there are spooky shadow people made from other people's nightmares running around, as well as dryads connected to the dragon, gargoyles, harpies-- it's great! (it's on hiatus but not abandoned) https://tapas.io/series/Your-Worst-Nightmare Heirs of the Veil is urban fantasy and has a lot of magical beings and creatures present in a really interesting town called Port Arbores. There are living dolls with ice powers, skull-wearing wind spirits, stuff about witches and how they run their covens (like one of the protagonists' Vicky's family!) It's great about letting information on each magical entity present unfurl slowly which gets readers really curious about them. http://heirsoftheveil.com/ Daughter of the Lilies has a ton of high fantasy lore, going so far as to create whole magic structures, rework classic fantasy races like orcs and elves, and even creating whole new ones. There's also a whole section of the comic about how different cultures perceive and portray each other (poorly) in novels, which personally affects the protagonists. https://www.daughterofthelilies.com/

There are some great world building in the comics, I'm inspired by! I'm absolutely in love with what Sink your Hookteeth by @boogeymadam has shown us thus far and I can't wait to see more I'm gonna have to go and repeat that the work on Heirs of the Veil is thus far amazing, and the environments on Ghost Junk Sicknesses ( @FeatherNotes(Krispy) & @spacerocketbunny ) are absolutely evocative and really make you wonder how things got to the point they are right now, how all these species got together and how they interact

For me, I have to give it to Rising Sand https://risingsand.glass/ which has not only a very deep world lore, but really lets the characters lead you through that world to explore it. I'm a sucker for fairy tale type things, so my favorite comic lore-wise has gotta be Lost Nightmare. https://www.lostnightmare.com/ It's rather short, and works with the super cool concept of the sandman and the boogeyman as rulers of separate kingdoms. Absolutely lovely, 100% recommend. Not super convoluted, and ties everything together nicely in the end!

“WE ARE NOT FOOLED”

OPEN LETTER TO HAWAI`I GOV. DAVID IGE - READ AT THE HAWAI`I STATE CAPITOL

On behalf of `Īlioʻulaokalani, we, the undersigned kumu hula and practitioners of hula and other forms of Hawaiian knowledge and culture, descendants of Wākea and the lands that comprise the pae `āina of Hawai`i, we do vehemently assert our ancestral rights to these lands, as well as our continued opposition to the construction of the TMT. 

We also protest and disavow your “legal” unleashing of violence against Kānaka Maoli through your declaration of a State of Emergency.  

As you are (hopefully) aware, but perhaps haven’t fully realized the irony as yet, the people who overthrew the Hawaiian Kingdom back in 1893 did the exact same thing—they deployed military troops and power in the name of “maintaining peace.” 

In reality, they did it, as do you, in order to maintain power so that you can continue to subjugate and oppress our people and our `āina, all the while speaking of the greater good—of capitalism, of Christianity, of codified law, of land as private property, of your so-called civilization, assimilation,... and now, astronomy.

We want you to know that we are not fooled by your statements, now or previously, about the “legality”of the TMT. 

When you create the system that creates the laws and also interprets and adjudicates them, then your version of “legal” sometimes has nothing to do with any version of “pono.” 

The TMT decision is a prime example of that and rests on a very tenuous legal interpretation (as acknowledged by Hawai`i Supreme Court and many others) and yet you persist because it is “legal.” 

To this we cannot, and we will not ever, agree.  

We want you to know that we are not fooled by your statements about the need to declare a “State of Emergency.” We clearly recognize and will educate others to recognize this as an excuse for you to unleash sanctioned, legal violence against peaceful citizens of Hawai`i—both young and old, Hawaiian and non-Hawaiian—who feel so strongly that we risk our physical, emotional, and spiritual—and economic—health and well-being of ourselves and future generations in order to stop this.  

Know that we are not fooled by your statements of concern for the safety and well-being of we, the protectors. We know and will educate others to know that you are the one putting our lives at risk solely in order to protect the economic and political interests of the state, the university, private corporations, and no doubt, yourself.  

As some of our kia`i leave the mauna, others will go to it. As some step aside, we will fill in... and so on... and so on... and on... a mau loa aku.  

We are Hawai`i. We are Maunakea. We are `Īlioʻulaokalani.
