German soldiers accidentally unearth an ancient statue in Thessaloniki city during the Nazi Occupation of Greece, March 1944. The Nazis initially gave the statue to the Greeks during a celebration with the Greek puppet government, intending to differentiate from the British and French who were known for smuggling ancient artifacts despite their good relations with the Greeks.

However, one week later the statue was taken and transferred first to Adolf Hitler’s mansion and then Joseph Goebbels’s residence. After the end of World War II, the statue was found by special forces of the American Army inside an abandoned salt mine in the Austrian Alps. Thanks to the efforts of the curator of Ancient Artifacts of Thessaloniki, Stylianos Pelekanidis, the statue returned to Thessaloniki in 1947. You can now see it in the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki.

The statue stands at 2,11 meters (6 ft 11) and represents an important figure for the society of Thessaloniki - possibly Vevia Alexandra, an arch priestess of the 3rd Century AD. The long chiton, her hairdo, the stature and her expression indicate a person born in an aristocratic family.

I then also relayed the officer's behavior which was also written in his docket for me that it was signed and immediately changed into a court appearance. I also ended it with telling him that if they have security cameras in the waiting hall, they will see the officer trying to intimidate me prior to being called in when he should have had no contact with me at all before approaching him. Not only did I not have to pay a $300 ticket, but I got to see the judge scream at the officer for his behavior. I was later made aware that he was fired. Probably because of me, but possibly because he may have done this to other people as well. And that's what people need to do. HISTORIA UNIVERSAL - BATALLA DE ESFACTERIA -

El cine, ese medio, que con sus luces y sombras, acerca al gran público la historia. Para muchos jóvenes la imagen que tienen de Esparta es la Gerard Butler en 300, como Leónidas I dando heroicamente su vida en las Termópilas, al grito de «¡Esto es Esparta!». El séptimo arte nos recrea la ciudad estado como paradigma de la militarización y el sacrificio. Su finalidad era vencer o morir heroicamente. Sin embargo, no siempre fue así, como veremos.

La Guerra del Peloponeso 431-404 aC. entre las poleis más poderosas del momento: Esparta y Atenas. Conflicto duro, incluso para la época, que después de numerosas vicisitudes supone una efímera preponderancia espartana sobre el mundo griego.

En Atenas, dos facciones luchaban por el poder tras la muerte de Pericles el 427 aC., el representante de una de ellas es Cleón, democrático y decidido, (aborrecido por Tucídides y Nicias por el partido conservador y partidario de la paz. La guerra se sucedía hasta ese momento con victorias en mar atenienses y derrotas en tierra, como la toma de Platea el 427 aC.

En el 425 a.C. Demóstenes, almirante que con 50 naves iba a socorrer a sus aliados de Sicilia, es desviado por un temporal al cruzar el mar Jónico, resguardándose en la bahía de Navarino, a solo 75 kilómetros de Esparta[3]. Se quedó a fortificar, la antigua acrópolis de Pilos, para crear un foco de inestabilidad dentro del Peloponeso. Mantiene cinco naves y unos pocos cientos de hombres, mientras el grueso de la flota se dirigió a Zacinto[4].

Tras 6 días de trabajos, se envían por fin tropas de Esparta, que no se habían preocupado demasiado al estar celebrando una fiesta solemne en su ciudad, dando tiempo para fortificarse.

Bloquearon el norte y sur de la isleta de Esfacteria (3’2 kilómetros en la actualidad), que casi cierra la bahía  y se sitúa al sur de Pilos. Tomaron la isla para evitar que los atenienses desembarcaran en ella, renovando la guardia diariamente, siendo los últimos en acantonarse 420 hombres comandados por Epitadas, más tropas auxiliares de iliotas. Con una flota de 43 naves al mando de  Trasimédidas, uno de cuyos capitanes era Brásidas intentaron tomar la fortaleza de Pilos por mar y que por tierra, pero unos pocos atenienses motivados por Demóstenes pudieron detenerlos.

En esta acción Brásidas cayó herido, cuando posteriormente se recuperó  tuvo un papel muy importante en la guerra. Durante el combate Demóstenes pidió ayuda a la flota de Zanzido que acudió inmediatamente, venciendo completamente a la armada enemiga, girando las tornas. Por un lado, las tropas espartanas y sus aliados por tierra tratan de tomar Pilos sin éxito y por el mar los atenienses y los suyos rodean la isla evitando la evacuación de las tropas sitiadas.

Al no lograr ninguno desequilibrar la situación, se produce una tregua, que permitió pasar alimentos a los espartanos.

Hay que tener presente, que hay quizás menos de 5000 ciudadanos espartanos con plenos derechos, lo que hacía que hubiera un porcentaje importante de ellos entre los sitiados. Pero Cleón abuso de la posición de fuerza y se reanudaron las hostilidades espartanas contra el promontorio de Pilos mientras Atenas envió 20 naves más 60 en total.

No quería ninguno que llegara el invierno y prolongar la costosa expedición. Cleón acusó de cobardía a los generales atenienses y Nicias lo animó a ir a solucionarlo él en persona, lo que sin duda pensó era la trampa perfecta, o su rival cae derrotado o su ciudad triunfa.

Afortunadamente para Cleón se produce un fuego fortuito al cocinar, por una avanzadilla de soldados atenienses se quema un bosque que podía favorecer la presencia de enemigos emboscados[8], además de exponerlos sol del verano.

Existían dos fortines en la isla, al norte y al sur. Con la mayoría de las tropas en el centro junto a la única fuente de agua. El del sur cae fácilmente de noche mientras duermen. Después desembarcan nuevas tropas de las embarcaciones: 1600 hombres (la mitad de ellos arqueros. Los espartanos luchan valientemente, contra un ataque constante de infantería ligera, con saetas y jabalinas, evitando el enfrentamiento tradicional entre falanges. Tucídides señala que no hubo cuerpo a cuerpo.

Finalmente se retiran y Epitadas defiende el fuerte más grande que hay al norte. Tras varios intentos de conquistarlos sin éxito, con los lacedemonios rodeados (como en las Termópilas) y agotados; se da un ultimátum: la rendición sin condiciones. Los dos primeros al mando han muerto y negocia el tercero en jerarquía, Estifón de Flasia. Desanimados, logran pedir instrucciones a tierra. La respuesta es que ellos elijan, pero que no sea deshonrosa. Quizás pensando que podrían luchar otro día o tal vez que pese a toda su dureza, la vida espartana era dulce. Fuese por lo que fuese, aquellos 292 hoplitas, de ellos 120 espartiatas (ciudadanos con plenos derechos), tras 62 días cercados, hacen lo que nadie esperaba de ellos, se rinden.

Como dijo acertadamente Asimov «Leónidas debe haberse revuelto en su tumba».  Esta rendición, impresiona al ejército de tierra, que se marcha dejando Pilos en manos atenienses. Tomaron la isla para evitar que los atenienses desembarcaran en ella, renovando la guardia diariamente, siendo los últimos en acantonarse 420 hombres comandados por Epitadas, más tropas auxiliares de iliotas. Con una flota de 43 naves al mando de  Trasimédidas, uno de cuyos capitanes era Brásidas intentaron tomar la fortaleza de Pilos por mar y que por tierra, pero unos pocos atenienses motivados por Demóstenes pudieron detenerlos.

En esta acción Brásidas cayó herido, cuando posteriormente se recuperó  tuvo un papel muy importante en la guerra. Durante el combate Demóstenes pidió ayuda a la flota de Zanzido que acudió inmediatamente, venciendo completamente a la armada enemiga, girando las tornas. Por un lado, las tropas espartanas y sus aliados por tierra tratan de tomar Pilos sin éxito y por el mar los atenienses y los suyos rodean la isla evitando la evacuación de las tropas sitiadas.

Al no lograr ninguno desequilibrar la situación, se produce una tregua, que permitió pasar alimentos a los espartanos.

Hay que tener presente, que hay quizás menos de 5000[5] ciudadanos espartanos con plenos derechos, lo que hacía que hubiera un porcentaje importante de ellos entre los sitiados. Pero Cleón abuso de la posición de fuerza y se reanudaron las hostilidades espartanas contra el promontorio de Pilos mientras Atenas envió 20 naves más (60 en total.

No quería ninguno que llegara el invierno y prolongar la costosa expedición. Cleón acusó de cobardía a los generales atenienses y Nicias lo animó a ir a solucionarlo él en persona, lo que sin duda pensó era la trampa perfecta, o su rival cae derrotado o su ciudad triunfa.

Afortunadamente para Cleón se produce un fuego fortuito al cocinar, por una avanzadilla de soldados atenienses se quema un bosque que podía favorecer la presencia de enemigos emboscados[8], además de exponerlos sol del verano.

Existían dos fortines en la isla, al norte y al sur. Con la mayoría de las tropas en el centro junto a la única fuente de agua. El del sur cae fácilmente de noche mientras duermen. Después desembarcan nuevas tropas de las embarcaciones: 1600 hombres (la mitad de ellos arqueros. Los espartanos luchan valientemente, contra un ataque constante de infantería ligera, con saetas y jabalinas, evitando el enfrentamiento tradicional entre falanges. Tucídides señala que no hubo cuerpo a cuerpo.

Finalmente se retiran y Epitadas defiende el fuerte más grande que hay al norte. Tras varios intentos de conquistarlos sin éxito, con los lacedemonios rodeados (como en las Termópilas) y agotados; se da un ultimátum: la rendición sin condiciones. Los dos primeros al mando han muerto y negocia el tercero en jerarquía, Estifón de Flasia. Desanimados, logran pedir instrucciones a tierra. La respuesta es que ellos elijan, pero que no sea deshonrosa. Quizás pensando que podrían luchar otro día o tal vez que pese a toda su dureza, la vida espartana era dulce. Fuese por lo que fuese, aquellos 292 hoplitas, de ellos 120 espartiatas (ciudadanos con plenos derechos), tras 62 días cercados, hacen lo que nadie esperaba de ellos, se rinden.

Esta rendición, impresiona al ejército de tierra, que se marcha dejando Pilos en manos atenienses. En el 421 a.C. muertos los lideres belicistas y agotadas en recursos, se produce la paz de Nicias (nombre del principal negociador ateniense. Por la que los humillados cautivos de Esfacteria vuelven a casa.
