Drew a redesign for Renaissance Pepper (16 years old!) :D Her outfit is very German/English inspired but I did add some flare to her to not make her look too drab (Pepper deserves more!). Many working women in that period and in the Medieval period would wrap a scarf around their hair and so I decided it would only be appropriate to have her hair tied as well. I absolutely love Pepper’s highlights so I had to add them, and I was ALMOST sure that she has a gap in her teeth, but I couldn’t find enough footage to prove my theory right (I mean I could have SWORN I’ve always seen her with a gap); finally @biscuitweevil convinced me to keep it and so I did. :’D 

It was a blast drawing her! I wish I could have coupled her design with Rake’s but school’s kicking my butt so I didn’t have the time.

Jane and the Dragon Character Profiles - Pepper

PEPPER Full name: Verbena Salter Age: 12 Her mother chose the name Verbena because she was given scented oil made from the plant as a wedding gift. (See note below.) Pepper’s last name, Salter, comes from her father’s family who were Salters for three generations. They salted the local herring to preserve it instead of smoking to make kippers. NICKNAMES: Family and friends all call her Pepper. JOB DESCRIPTION: To run the Royal Kitchens and to serve the Royal family and guests at meals. PEPPER’S HISTORY: Her parents live at the wharf in rooms above the rope-maker’s store. Her father works at the wharf unloading and delivering produce, especially fish. Her mother works in the smoking sheds where she hangs the herring for smoking and helps manage the wood stocks for the smoking fires. Like most parents, Pepper’s mother and father wanted to make a better life for their daughter, and when she was 8 years old, they took her up to the castle to try to find her work there. She became a maid in the Royal Kitchen. When she was eleven, the castle's staff was reduced and only Pepper was kept on in the kitchen where she runs everything herself. Pepper has a very busy day and only gets out when she goes to the local markets with the Lady-In-Waiting to help buy produce. On these outings she always calls by to see her parents, and her father sometimes comes up to the castle to deliver goods from the boats.

FAVORITE FOOD: Mashed potatoes. Pepper loves mashed potatoes because they’re easy to make and everybody loves them. If she has some spare butter she will mash it in to make the potatoes extra creamy. AMBITION: Pepper has a very big ambition. She would like to fall in love and have lots of children. But she knows that when that day comes, she will have to stop working in the kitchens. For the moment, she is content to dream about getting married and having children. FAVORITE SONG: Pepper loves music, especially dance music. Her favorite ballad is ‘The Green Rose’ which tells of the most beautiful red rose in a garden who became jealous when a red poppy grew taller than she did. She was so jealous that she strained and strained to grow taller and pushed the green color from her leaves up into her petals. FAVORITE PASTIMES: If she has any spare time, Pepper loves sculpting pastry into interesting pictures to bake on her pies. Instead of simple leaves, she will make whole flower gardens from pastry. NOTE: The species of verbena that Pepper’s mother was given as scented oil was an old variety that only grows in East Africa. A trader brought some to the wharf one day. It is called Lippia Adoensis. As well as using it in oil, it is used as a culinary spice in Ethiopia, where it is known by the Amharic name Koseret.

Jane X Pepper would make a very cute crack ship in an AU. 

Consider-Pepper fixates on shipping Jane with other people because she struggles to admit to herself she’s the one with feelings for Jane because she knows it would never work. Knights-in-training don’t court kitchen girls. 

Maybe Jane reciprocates in an AU, maybe she doesn’t. Either way, Pepper is happy to support and care for Jane in any she can, usually by giving her a steaming hot bowl of soup after a hard mission.

What Ear Piercings I think some JATD characters would have based on vibes

Jane: Daith Piercing (people with Daith Piercings are said to be brave and focused, and it wouldn’t  get in her hair as much as some other piercings would as she was flying)

Jester: Tragus Piercing (People with Tragus Piercings are said to be lighthearted, and also, something about it just fits. It’s the kind of piercing that makes other people sometimes wonder “wow, did that hurt?” and I feel like Jester would love questions like that. Also it probably wouldn’t get in the way of his hat or hair or anything)

Smithy: Snug Piercing. (This piercing tends to be small, but it’s definitely noticeable without calling too much attention to itself, depending on the earring. And the fact that earrings made for snug piercings look “balanced” could definitely be a visual indication of Smithy’s level-headed nature from a character design standpoint. Also, I considered giving him a rook piercing for similar reasons, but I feel like he would dislike the idea of having a rook piercing.)

Gunther: Helix Piercing (A lot of earrings made for Helix Piercings look very elegant and refined, and clamp close to the ear as to not get in the way. And, while the Helix Piercing is said to not actually hurt that much, a lot of people would probably think the piercing was painful, and Gunther would use that to his full advantage to subtly intimidate people. Finally, if he got it behind his father’s back, it would be a confidence-boosting sign of his own strength and independence.)

Rake and Pepper (I’m lumping them in together because I feel like they would have the same piercing and that piercing would be): Lobe Piercing. (Lobe Piercings don’t really hurt at all, and are usually small, sweet and bright. I feel like Pepper would be really curious about the idea of getting a piercing seen as more extreme/unusual, but when actually faced with the option, she’d be more than happy to get a cute little Lobe Piercing. Rake would know from the get-go that a more extreme piercing is not for him. Even the thought of a Lobe Piercing would freak him out,  and he would be this close to just buying a bunch of clip-ons forever until he saw Pepper get her Piercings without a hitch.)

Bonus; 

Dragon (if he was a human with human ears): Conch Piercing (This piercing looks a bit hidden, a sign of Dragon’s cave dwelling, somewhat isolated nature. A lot of people consider Conch Piercings “intimidating”, which fits since a lot of people are nervous around Dragon when they first meet him. The “intimidating” nature of the piercing is also a sign of how dedicated and willing Dragon is when it comes to some things. Finally, something about it just reminds me of a dragon’s hoard of jewels based on appearance alone.

When I was first planning The Warmest Flame, I originally planned on having a scene where Pepper talks to Adeline and Adeline realizes that Pepper has a crush on Jane and is internally like “oh boy, we’ve reached *that* age of crushes and romance, good luck Pepper and Jane.” I also planned a scene where Sir Theodore finds out about the crush somehow and gives Pepper some vague romance advice, with a hint implying that Sir Theodore had once had an unrequited love of his own
