Vanguard is a high fantasy interactive fiction, driven heavily by the player character's decisions. Features a customizable playable faering character, romantic/platonic routes, and having fun as a dragon!

CONTENT WARNINGS: VIOLENCE, SUGGESTIVE AND SEXUAL CONTENT, LOTS OF SWEARING, PROBABLY GASLIGHTING (looking at you, Vera), POSSIBLE UNHEALTHY RELATIONSHIP DYNAMICS. Intended for an audience that is 17+ ; read with discretion!

YOUR STORY

As a faering, you should want to keep to yourself. Your home is a safe haven where your dragon kin people reside; a place of true neutrality. There are no allies to the Midlands, nor are there enemies. Your people simply are, and this will not change.

But you were never one much for rules, were you? With whispers of a certain prince in the Northlands allegedly receiving death threats from your docile leader, Cirrus, you could only slip away into the depths of the North to go see for yourself. It's so hilariously outrageous that your peace-loving ruler has such rumours teeming about them.

You did not expect to find a bounty hunter bleeding out from her abdomen. And most of all, you did not expect her to know you by name, even through her raggedy breaths. And most of all, you did not expect her to have leads on the one you seek: the Northern Prince.

FEATURES

Customize a playable character (pronouns, gender, appearance, sexuality, etc.)

Be helpful to a stern prince...or not.

Develop relationships with a diverse cast of: three non-binary characters (Cirrus, Vio, Kiera), two male characters (Emilio and Charles), and two female characters (Vera and Nia). Note that Vio and Kiera are non-romanceable.

Approximately 12k words thus far; chapter one in progress.

An update is live!

After a long winter, the first of many updates is live. This one brings the total count to 17 772 (Excl. commands), it brings a large number of changes since the last update, too many to list to be frank. You now have a full dialogue between the team to properly get to know everyone and get a sense of what they are like. As mentioned in an earlier blog post, we have laid out some plans for RO's but nothing is set in stone yet, so if you have any strong opinions now is the time to voice them. Who would you be interested in pursuing as an RO?

As is tradition today's update comes with a competition, first one to Message me with the correct answer gets their name in the next chapter! (No cheating, ok? 😇) What Rifle does Ren use?

Dumb idea: Vanguard -if- AU where the only difference is that Ibuki has his bird with him, and it follows any potential changes the bird being there would have.

Bonus points if the bird somehow dramatically changes things in the most ridiculous ways.

Not a true example, but it popped up in my head:

-if- Aichi: “I will destroy Vanguard!” -if- Aichi: Prepares to blast his enemies out of Sanctuary -if- Aichi: Stops when he sees the bird -if- Aichi: “...Darn it, I can’t hurt a bird!”

I think it's inevitable that a certain group of people will take Orym's statement about not being able to put down the lens he see the world through as further proof that his perspective is subjective and therefore untrustworthy as it applies to the Vanguard, but imo it serves as a stronger indictment toward those who are able to view the Vanguard as anything other than awful and predatory and murderous. Other people have the luxury of being able to see this through another lens if they so want to--Orym cannot. Because once a group like this has murdered your family, for the sake of a practice run no less, a test, it is impossible to view the situation in any other way. He is walking proof of the harm that the Vanguard does. His loved ones have been deemed "necessary collateral damage." His lens is not one that can or should be set aside in the assessment of the Vanguard, because if they are willing to commit such heinous crimes and excuse them as necessary collateral for ends that are so uncertain, then they are fundamentally not an organization that can be reasoned with or even should be sympathized with

i know i have mentioned it before, but just a reminder that updates from now on will not be consistent, and i apologize for this! i am a full time STEM student at uni, and this is a passion project i have on the side so i don't go insane at school. calculus has already fried a good portion of my brain cells. i'm trying to regrow them.

i do have a good bit of chapter one written out, so i am reaalllyy gonna keep a positive mindset and hopefully write bit by bit, no matter how busy school gets.

End of winter?

Easter is here, and this Mats brought his work laptop to the cabin to start writing again. We have officially landed on the plot and characters moving forward, so now it's time to write our heroes finally landing that damn helicopter. We will restrict big deviations/variations moving forward to help keep momentum high, this means the next demo will likely have some WIP greyed-out answers. We will also add a survey to each new release to help us gather feedback and gain ideas for new choices/answers so we can focus on the paths that are interesting to you.

I’m back in my Interstitial: Our Hearts Intertwined phase, and I’m shocked that I actually have a character in mind that works perfectly as The Other over any other classes (Or, well, I suppose The Discarded could also work, but The Other fits my interpretation of the character in question better in a lot of ways).

It’s funny because The Other is one of those Playbooks that feels weirdly specific on what it’s supposed to be, and that seriously limits the characters you can reasonably choose for it. And yet here I am, using a character I’m fascinated by with it.

For reference, Cardfight!! Vanguard fans that have seen my posts probably know this if they’re aware of Interstitial and its Playbooks, but I’m talking about Cardfight!! Vanguard Extra Story -if-’s version of Aichi Sendou.

I’m kind of ignoring the established in-universe rule (From Vanguard If) of how two of the same person from different timelines can’t interact because one gets sent back to their own world/timeline, but you could argue that with a world-hopping story where worlds are in danger, that the time paradox rules become skewed and can’t properly be enforced (Particularly when they’re in other worlds entirely rather than the relevant timeline worlds). So really, that might not even be a problem.
