the way that flint (and miranda when she's still alive) is constantly trying to replicate the oringinal flint/thomas/miranda dynamic is just so wild. Like miranda tries to transpose thomas onto pastor lambrick, doesn't work. flint tries to transpose thomas on to eleanor, doesn't work. Miranda dies, flint tries to substitute silver for her (doesn't work) then tries to substitute silver for thomas (really doesn't work). Then they meet madi and she fills the role of thomas pretty well but silver does not fit the role of miranda (still) and flint, maybe most importantly, no longer fits the role of james mcgraw so like!!! it was never going to work, this is the closes he got and STILL it's never enough. anyways, triangles real

thinking about how love is such a defining trait for all the pirates, even the most cynical. charles vane, for example, who never wanted a domestic life but died loving eleanor guthrie, stayed behind out of love for jack and anne, even if it was his ruin… thinking about how blackbeard’s motivation was based on his love and protection for another man. how flint’s entire arc has to do with love and grief and demanding justice and creating a place in the world where his love cab exist. how silver is so surprised to see that he is loved by the crew, and later by madi, who is so different, so much more open than all of them because she came from a place where love was abundant.

and thinking about how this contrasts with most of the british navy men who try to govern nassau, who murder and kill not out of love, but to feel powerful. because they want to be perceived as powerful and as better than other men

Oh boy... OH BOY... I was reading through comments and tags under that Flint vs. Stede post (and before that in Silver vs. Oluwande post) and OH BOY RANT INCOMING

I LOVE how people are like "Black Sails fans are so mean why are they like that T.T ?" in the tags and comments.

LET ME TELL YOU.

So we have this show that has been marginalized and has been pushed to the side for years. A show that has excellent plot, wonderful intrigue, magnificent representation and well-written, 3D characters that are complex and relatable. You get your edgy queer men (whether you want to characterize Flint as gay or bi, doesn't change the fact that he likes dick whichever way), you get your edgy queer girls (Anne), you get your flamboyant whatever-the-fuck-Jack-Rackham-is (<3), you get sweet gays (Thomas), you get confused bisexuals (Eleanor, Silver), you get straight sweets (Miranda) and straight angery dicks (Woodes Rogers), and competent, edgy straights (Vane). Oh! A competent, master-of-the-house lesbian? Check (Max). You even have asexuals, or that is what I shall forever classify Billy as. You have a f/f sex scene in the first damn episode, ffs. You get threesomes (sexual, romantic), you get couples, you even have Silver in a brothel orgy.

But sexual representation is not ALL! You get goofy pirates (Jack Rackham), you get serious pirates (Blackbeard), you get balls of rage (Flint), you get chill, laid-back sea dogs (Gates), you get competent little weasels (Silver), you get incompetent rats (Dufrense). You also have marvelous extras and side characters (Beauclerc the marksman, Captain Fruit-Fruit, Idelle... OHMYGOD IDELLE <3333).

There's the political plot that's historically accurate, the story's plot that's Flint's big gay rage, there's the sociological context of being painted as a monster, there's the gold hunt, there are ships correctly operated by crews of more than five fucking people, there are guns, blood and realistic injuries. You get quotations and allusions to Shakespeare, Cervantes, Julius Caesar, Marcus Fucking Aurelius, a metric ton of other classical writers. You get so many tropes done right it's astonishing and too effing long to list them all here.

On top of that, there is the picturesque landscape, absolutely gorgeous ships and very accurate portrayal of how life looked back then.

We had to defend that show when it first came out, the actors had to fucking fight homophobic assholes upon the airing of season two (IMAGINE THAT), people who loved it had a hard time going around, although admittedly it's a "fandom" hard time, not a "real life" hard time. We persisted, we persevered, and now we're here, clinging to what's left of our fandom, because we are admittedly all over the place and we don't have "troops" on any one social media, which makes our numbers small in comparison to other fandoms, and makes fandom interactions very limited.

Now imagine that there aired a show... a pirate show promising a lot. And then the show turned out to be an office-type comedy with no lesbian/bi women representation (I may be wrong, but I did watch it out of curiosity, didn't see any, just guys). A show that the whole plot of is just a rendition of the Beauty and the Beast for pirate times with so many historical inaccuracies (couching your crew like a bunch of office workers? Plz. The way they speak and the concepts they talk of that weren't there? It's like they were sitting around a fire, holding hands and singing kumbaya). And don't get me wrong, there's place for those shows as well, and maybe it works for you (and great for you too!).

We tried to ignore it, really we did. We basically gave it the eyebrow-raise-huff-ignore thing that you do on the internet when you want someone to enjoy their stuff and are not interested in it yourself.

But you know what happened? Suddenly there were people on twitter tagging everyone and their dog from Black Sails with renditions of Flint/Izzy (Izzy who comes across as an extreme asshole at best and a homophobic shit at worst and you can't fault people for reading it like this). Let that sink in - our fandom babe Flint, who had his whole life ruined due to homophobia and homophobic assholes is suddenly being shipped with a guy who suspiciously fits the description a bit too much for our tastes. Wouldn't you get angry? Of course you would, we're all very protective of our babes. We are, you are, everyone is. We asked you not to do this, and while I admit that hurling curses your way might not have been the most polite way of asking you to stop, the message was clear enough. What does OFMD fandom do? They all double down. Double fucking down on fanfiction and tagging everything in BS again, pairing Flint and Izzy together, writing things way out of the realm of any possibilities because most of the writers didn't watch BS (I did read their comments on that. They weren't even sorry). If you take such character and throw him into a work of art that can and will be seen as controversial, you should at least have the decency to do your homework on the original work he comes from. Otherwise, to our eyes, you're taking the most wronged man from our beloved show, wronged due to his sexuality, and throw him together with a literal asshole just to see them fuck because they would look pretty (and that's an actual comment from one of the artists, I shit you not). Wouldn't you feel a bit angry about that? I bet you would.

What's worse, people loving Black Sails and not liking OFMD usually point out how narrow the representation is, how improbable the show is and how they're not remotely invested in the plot. It's a cheesy show for your average Sunday afternoon, don't make it into something it's not. It's not a political statement any more than Guess The Tune is.

What's more, when I've seen attempts at people pointing out the obvious flaws in plot, in logic (how many people crew that ship exactly? How is he not dead after being stabbed clean through with a sword?), all we've gotten was "Oh it's not that type of show, OBVIOUSLY", "it's just a comedy, duh" and my personal favorite "you just DON'T UNDERSTAND IT BOOMER". (I'm a late Millennial, thx). Every attempt was chucked out the window. What got me most, tho, was the high praise of OFMD IS THE FIRST SHOW TO [insert whatever queer thing it did supposedly]. No, it's not. There was even a post on twitter that debunked all those claims one by one. I get it, you're happy that you got your gay pirates, good for you. But give credit where credit's due, otherwise you're gonna piss off a lot of people. People who watched our show struggle and crawl so that your show can run today and be fine and accepted widely.

And personally, I felt disappointed watching it because of the lack of representation. Disappointed that Ed turned out to be just as rainbowy as Stede. Don't get me wrong, I don't have anything against rainbowy, ultra-sweet characters that are big softies. I love them. But not everyone in the lgbtq community is like that. Actually, it's the minority. There are your sweets, there are your glittery rainbows, but the majority is on the more... inconspicuous part of the scale. And there are edgy people (like myself) who don't like glitter, pink, feathers, fluff and a shitton of other things this show had in abundance. You know what made me wince while watching? When I realized that the only person who I could remotely like for the way they weren't so glittery-rainbowy-sweet was Izzy, and I hated him because he was an asshole. Even Jim got the fluffy af oranges arch. So not my (and others') cup of tea.

So yeah, our recent anger and rabidity is not based solely on one post about an insignificant poll (that you're winning only because our fandom is significantly smaller and most people are dispersed between different sites). It's all those things combined and it's the result of them.

And no, I'm not going to finish it with a "please forgive us if we seem a bit angery, we're coping". Flint wouldn't.

This has been bothering me for a while. But Lou is actually such a well-thought-out character I need to rant about him. Honestly, at times, he reminds me of myself, not in the way we act. Nowhere are complete polar opposites. But in the way how he struggles with emotions. With feeling like a person. For me, the whole point of his character is to show how much an environment with no one there for you can impact you. This can be shown with some of the other characters in CoD as well, but I'm biased.

Both in the prince's path and in his consort's path we can see his own struggle. More so in his consort's path than in the prince's path but my point remains the same. What really hits hard for me is the fact that at times throughout the story you can see him express his own genuine emotions. Not as much as a normal person would but it's still there. Yet he doesn't notice this himself half the time. And continuously tells himself he truly is just a husk of a being. He was raised to be a disposable tool just like all the other Vanans in Sekitopia. From what we saw in his consorts path chapter 17, he truly was raised without anyone there for him emotionally and physically. It seems that without someone there he didn't know how to feel. And was either secluded from the rest or an even sadder prospect excluded himself feeling as though he didn't belong. While still just a small child. That doesn't work in favor of anyone's development and all in all, just made things worse. As we see from the Lou we meet at the begging of his consort path and the beginning of the prince's path. What we do know is that he was alone while not being alone. And that's one of the worst feelings you could ever feel, coming from someone who knows it quite well. Eventually, he was given a chance to be free of that awful environment, sure he'd still be a pawn but it would be some semblance of freedom no other Vanan people could get. So of course when he got the chance he became the Headmaster/Governor and a more useful pawn for Iritium.

So of course when the proposed 'descendant' of Vane shows up. He will immediately tell the organization. If I was in his shoes, devoid of most emotions from a cold uprising. But given some freedom to be a loyal dog that could be taken away easily, I'd be a loyal dog too. As his route progress, voltage does a decent job of portraying the inward struggle of actually trying to figure out your own emotions. Especially ones that are prompted that you've never felt or rarely felt until someone in your life begins to show them to you. On purpose or accidentally. Now that I'm re-reading his path after just completing his romantic route and now attempting his mischief route. I feel like I'm appreciating the little details in the way his consort perspectives our written more and more. He's such a sad character to me because as much of an asshole as he is. There's a reason he's like that. He's truly an example of villains that are that way because they were the victim. He isn't heartless and manipulative without a reason, while he doesn't have a purpose for himself or a reason for himself. There's reasoning as to his character. It doesn't at all excuse what he did and if given the chance id strangle him while aggressively shaking him. But at the same time, I just want to hug him and tell him it's all okay now. Just like how MC is portrayed to have wished to be there for him in his childhood in Lou's consort path, I hold the same sentiments. Because if things were different so many things could have changed.

His character arc throughout his own route is well done from feeling devoid to having more and more emotions. While still struggling to give them a name, because that's just how it works. You struggle with trying to grasp your own emotions and name them when you finally start a journey to self-betterment from something like that. It's something I'm still struggling with myself. But not as extreme as he is. Like most otome games it is a bit too fast-paced for what would happen in reality. But it's a dating sim, they have to pack it all in there quickly to provide for the consumers. But it's still well done considering that. They also handled the reincarnated lovers trope fairly well. Since the flashback he has isn't what changes him. No in both the prince's path and his consort's path you see him slowly changing. The flashback is what helps him finally realize. Like when you finally get a reality check after so long. Or when you have a depressive episode for weeks on end and someone finally points out how far you've come. In his consort path, it helped him realize his built-up feelings for the mc, which helped him also realize some of his other feelings. And while he wasn't able to just suddenly understand them all he was able to get a gist of it. And that's one of the biggest steps to improvement you can take. When you start to understand the gist of it but still struggle you truly feel more like a person than just an empty shell. And this helped him realize some of the bare minimum of his own morals of right and wrong. Allowing him to take action to save the Vanans on his own accord and then go to MC. Because of course, that's something you'd realize was wrong immediately after gaining some semblance of morals. Since that's something to such an extreme point.

Lou's character is honestly beautifully written, and I really hope that in his BK 2, we get to see him still struggling. But trying his damned hardest with MC by his side. Near the end of his path, we get to see more and more of the man he can be. Mischievous, honest, thoughtful, and kind to extremes for the people he cares for; (looking at the summer event where he fucking changed the weather to unbearable heat just for MC) As well as him begging completely open about his feelings even if he doesn't quite know what they are or what spurred them on. Just that he knows he feels this to a degree/or wants to do this. I can't help but love this man for who he can become. He's done dreadful things but if I was in MC's place. I would somewhat hate him if it was the prince's path but be willing to give him a chance. He did quite literally kidnap and use MC in the prince's path so there not be me falling ln love. But I'd be willing to not forgive but try and make a better relationship from that point onward. And if it was the consort's path I'd see what he had gone through and help him every step of the way. In this path since he didn't kidnap us and when he finally began to see his own emotions and immediately acted on that. Yeah no he has my heart. I'll be there to support that funky little evil man turned good all the way. He may be a snow white rip off but he'd be my snow white rip off.

All in all, I think Lou is a beautifully written character. There's more I would like to say but it's hard for me to put to words. And it's nice to see someone that is going through a similar struggle as me, in media. One that is actually well done and not just yeah he doesn't feel jack shit. But I have a sad backstory so you should feel bad for me. He's actually well thought out and it's great. I love him and he's so interesting.

MY AVIATION ORIGIN STORY

Basically, and I’m not exaggerating, I randomly decided to make a sad-excuse for a helicopter as a part of our wood shop unit in middle school. I genuinely do not know why I chose a helicopter, there is no reason for me to have chosen a helicopter lol. My wood shop teacher is like “I’m actually very intrigued on why you picked a helicopter like what made you pick it? I’m impressed!” And I literally had not answer for him.

My interest was solidified when I went to EAA AirVenture. Watching the F-22 Raptor fly was and always will be breathtaking to me. That demo gave me the love for military aviation and especially fighters that I have today.

he was the first person ronan went to when he decided to form a resistance (once ronan broke him out of jail)

honestly very proud of his status as "the first resistance member" as he was the first person ronan recruited

kale likes to think that this makes him ronan's "second in command" and ignores ronan when ronan tells everyone that that is a position which belongs to padraic lorcan (even kale is not brave enough to bring up to ronan that padraic has been missing for two years ... )

kale has a great sense of humor and tbh he is always laughing and joking!!!

in fact, isolda has banned him from sitting next to cillian whenever the resistance meets because they simply egg each other on

he's been friends with ronan since they were boys and he's one of the few people who is unaffected when ronan brings the mood down with one of his angry rants -- kale's always here to lighten things up again!

arrogant, conceited, proud, selfless, energetic, kind, considerate, reckless, loyal, idealistic, romantic

kale has always been a flirt, but he views himself as a helpless romantic who is eventually destined to find the love of his life (and when he does, he will not need to look at another woman again!)

in the meantime, he's enjoying some friendly flirtations with both eabha -- which he once thought was harmless, but now he's realizing that it might be something more???

she's certainly much higher in rank than he is (not to mention, he's an outlaw!) and she will likely soon marry someone else

not to mention, he doubts she cares for him in this way

kale is dealing with this problem in the only way he knows how: ignoring it!

You barely ever get to see your uncle and cousins due to living so far away from them, but thankfully, your mom let you transfer to the High school next to where Dib went.

Now you're finally here after a long plane ride, you walk up to the door of Uncle Membrane's house and knock on the door. You greet your uncle with a hug as he walks you in, he shows you your room which is in between Gaz and Dib's rooms.

A few hours later you're finished unpacking and decorating your room, you're genuinely happy with how it looks. You're admiring your work when you're interrupted by an all too familiar voice.

"Hello?"

You turn around to see your little cousin, Dib, with a smile.

"Hi Dib!"

"...[Y/n]? I thought you were at home!"

He runs up to you and gives you a hug.

"Actually I'm going to be staying here for a while, I'll be going to the nearby Highschool."

"Perfect!! Because I need your help."

"What is it, Buddy?"

You listen to him rant about his encounters with his alien classmate Zim, as you listen to him, the more you start to believe him, especially when he showed you a picture.

For real, theres no skin condition out there that turns you green with no nose or ears, obviously the kiddo is an alien! Dib perked up when you said you believed him.

"Wait really? You actually believe me?!"

"Of course, it so painfully obvious, that i'm really starting to question the intelligence of our generation. For real for real."

"Finally someone believes me!! You're the best cousin ever!"

"I try, how about tomorrow after school, I help you catch this alien classmate of yours?"

"Perfect! And bring lots of water, it burns him. We have a big day tomorrow, Goodnight Y/n!"

"G'night Dib!"

He gave you one more hug before going to his room. You put on your pajamas and got in bed, tomorrow will be interesting for sure.

You agreed to meet Dib at recess at the gate that separates the high school and the middle school's playground. Sure enough you did, bringing your lunch with you so you don't go hungry, spying on aliens takes up energy.

You hopped up onto the fence and sat down, Dib noticed you right away and came over.

"Whats Kraken, Squiddo?"

"Not much, anyways Zim is right over there-... was that a pun?"

"Yep"

Dib face palmed as you looked at Zim, sure enough, Dib was right. Thats an alien, green skin, no ears or nose, and wearing a weird space-y outfit.

"...bruh. its so obvious hes an alien! Its so obvious its not even funny."

"I KNOW!!!!"

Zim stopped what he was doing as he heard Dib's outburst and looked directly at you and Dib. You both went quiet as he marched over.

He stopped just a few feet away from Dib and looked up at you with a questioning glare.

"Dib! Who is this larger human worm baby you converse with?!"

"Shes not a baby, shes almost an adult."

"Hi.. i'm Y/n."

"Y/n..."

He let your name roll off his tongue in a questioning manner.

"Cousin Y/n and I are totally gonna catch you after school!"

"Just try it, I'll be ready, FOR I AM ZIIIIIM!!!!"

As Zim ran off you just stared, not knowing what to think.

"...so he thinks he can conquer earth."

"Yeah basically."

"I don't know if i should be laughing or concerned."

Both of the school bells ring and you give Dib a hug before you both go inside.

The school bells ring to end the day and you step outside, the polluted air filling your lungs. You space out until you feel a familiar tug on your shirt, you look down and see Dib, as wide eyed and adorable as ever.

Your fond thoughts and memories are interrupted by a certain green alien running past.

"AFTER HIM!!"

"LETS GET IT!"

With that, the two of you take off as Dib pulls out a set of strange looking handcuffs. He also hands you a water gun.

The chase lasts for a good few minutes, taking you all over the place, through alleys, parking lots, and on top of a public bus.

It all ends when Zim makes it into his house, and the two of you don't.

"Well.. that was... eventful.." you comment in between heavy breaths

"We'll get you next time, Zim!! You hear me?!!"

Hyperventilating, you collapse on the concrete pathway in front of Zim's house. Dib's frustration toward Zim quickly turns to worry directed at you.

"Hey, woah.. [Y/n], are you okay?"

"Tired.."

"Okay, hold on okay?"

Dib grabs a phone from his backpack and calls Gaz, minutes later, she shows up with a black wagon.

She then grabs you from under your arms and, with the help of Dib, hoists you into the wagon. They both start to roll you home, making conversation on the way.

Halfway there, you feel better and switch places with Dib and Gaz, them in the basket, and you pulling them.

You all get home, and to nobody's surprise, Uncle Membrane isn't there. You throw a frozen pizza in the oven and spend time with your cousins before you all eat and get ready for bed.

You're in the middle of a dream when you're woken up by a teary eyed Dib sitting at the edge of your bed.

"Hey, whats wrong, bud?"

"Nothing... just a nightmare. I.. wanted to see if you were okay."

"I'm sorry, I'm alright, buddy. Tell ya what, how about we have a sleepover?"

Dib looks at you, intrigued by your suggestion. You scoot over and pat the space on the bed next to you.

"We can keep eachother safe, after all, what are cousins for?"

Dib smiles and crawls in next to you.

"Thank you, [Y/n], you're the best."

The two of you drift off to sleep, ready for another day of school and alien hunting.

Pov Switch: Zim

I watched as the Dib got into the stasis cushion with his 'cousin', as they called it. Maybe.. if i can get the [Y/n] in my possession, I CAN USE THEM AGAINST THE DIB! ITS GENIUS!!!

I retreat from the [Y/n]'s window and run back to base, ready to formulate my next plan of attack.
