Vacation-Staycation Eternal Blu-ray Catch-up! So my vacation time technically ended on Monday, but I didn't actually get around to my final posts, so I'm going to do so now. 🎞️ Chapter 28: Crazy Samurai 400 vs 1 🎬 I wanted to watch some samurai or swordfighting films I hadn't seen yet, and had 3 I was considering, two of which I ended up watching. By entertaining coincidence, when I put on the first, there were immediately 2 movie trailers--and they were for other two movies I was considering. In any case, Crazy Samurai 400 vs 1 (or Crazy Samurai Musashi) is what it says on the tin, but it is also barely a movie. It's more of a novelty fight choreography piece. You don't really get to know or care about characters or story, but you Do get a one of a kind 77 minute single take sword fight. With about 7 or 8 minutes preceding & following it. Also, you figure out the trick to the one take battle within the first several minutes. Basically a bunches of people keep coming up a little at time, get hit by a randomly ordered mix of about a dozen different attacks, CGI blood flies, and they stumble out of frame. Also, like it were a marathon, somehow he keeps having moments to break, and always finds another identical looking wooden container with water in it...it's broken up slightly also by the occasional "more important" attacker. It is certainly a novelty achievement, but not very exciting, and extremely repetitive. The best part of the fighting is the little separate fight at the end, where normal editing has resumed. And while the main character (Musashi) is based on an actual person, this movie has no relation to reality. Okay, I'm ending the posts with these, even if I didn't watch during my vacation time technically, they're still part of the eternal catch-up, and 30 is a neater number of chapters... [Speaking of which, for any interested, this whole thing amounted to 22 posts, 30 "chapters", and a grand total of 44-46 movies, depending how/what you count, so let's just say 45 movies.] 🎞️ Chapter 30: A Fistful of Dollars For a Few Dollars More 🎬 Finishing this whole run with these two immortal "spaghetti" western classics, that helped popularize the genre, just released on 4K. Also included a pic of the full trilogy, though the 4K of the final and best of them (The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly), was already out for a while. In any number of posts over the years I've already talked someone extensively about these films, but suffice to say, I'm *very* excited to have them all on 4K, and what I watched thus far looks very promising, transfer wise. Vacation-Staycation Eternal Blu-ray Catch-up! The other one of these two samurai films (I don't know why I included both pictures in each), this one is certainly more a film... 🎞️ Chapter 29: Samurai Marathon 🎬 The other film's only tie to reality was the main character was (theoretically) "based on" a real person who was known for his undefeated record in his 61 duels. Samurai Marathon on the other hand is inspired by an actual event that happened (which was also the start of the first marathon in Japan). This Japanese-British co-production is just a much better film, no matter how you look at it. I enjoyed it, and would watch it again (as opposed to the previous, which is a one time watch novelty I think). This one had actual story, and acting, and characters and circumstances you got to know some and care about. Plus is was exciting, and shot well, and not at all as goofy as it's name might sound to us here. Finally caught up again on these posts, I'm partway through the 4th of these 6 films, The Thin Man Series. 🎞️ Chapter 27: The Thin Man After the Thin Man Another Thin Man Shadow of the Thin Man The Thin Man Goes Home Song of the Thin Man 🎬 The Thin Man series were comedy mystery movies (that might've skirted with a hint of noir, were they darker and bleaker), based on books and characters written/created by Dashiell Hammett. The characters Nick and Nora Charles (played by William Powell & Myrna Loy in all 6 films) directly inspired one of my all time favorite podcast segments, Beyond Belief from Thrilling Adventure Hour. This was more than enough reason for me to want to watch. Over the course of the series the likes of Maureen O'Sullivan, Cesar Romero, Jimmy Stewart, Virginia Grey, Sheldon Leonard, Shemp Howard, Donna Reed, Stella Adler, and Tor Johnson, among others. There are (as ever, not surprisingly) some problematic elements, though so far nothing too severe (comparatively), and on a whole so far, I am enjoying them. Vacation-Staycation Eternal Blu-ray Catch-up! One more 4K (itself also DolbyVision/DolbyAtmos) before I switch back to some regular blu-rays. 🎞️ Chapter 25: Godzilla vs. Kong 🎬 I saw this before on HBO Max. I'd wanted to see it when it was in theaters, but we'll, at the time *gestures at world*. Anyways, when I saw it, it was before I had the full combination of DolbyVision/DolbyAtmos supporting 4K TV, player, sound system (& necessary high speed HDMI cords), as well as watching it through a streaming service. I can saw that having all that and the 4K disc was definitely a improvement. Either way, this movie is fun, just as goofy as it should be, and looks and sounds brilliant. Vacation-Staycation Eternal Blu-ray Catch-up! Yet another somewhat odd pairing (though this time both are DolbyVision/DolbyAtmos 4Ks) 🎞️ Chapter 23: Snake Eyes - G.I. Joe Origins Chapter 24: Hellboy [2019] 🎬 Snake Eyes was fun, if a bit silly, fairly predictable, and not particularly engaging. It may not have been good, but it was fun, and cool in some ways, and I wasn't intending to take it seriously, so it worked fine for what I wanted from it. I didn't think either of these films were quite as bad as their critical response and box offices implied. That said, Snake Eyes was definitely the more enjoyable of the two. The 2019 Hellboy was, not very good. Again, not as bad as treated by most, but definitely not a good movie. It felt unnecessary, it was sloppily written, and didn't hold up on any level to the Guillermo del Toro films. That said, it was still a little fun, and looked good generally visually. Vacation-Staycation Eternal Blu-ray Catch-up! And yet another odd combo of movies, still all 4K (the first of which is another DolbyVision/DolbyAtmos). 🎞️ Chapter 21: Alita - Battle Angel Chapter 22: Jojo Rabbit 🎬 I didn't know anything about the source material of Alita: Battle Angel, in fact my main reason for wanting to see it was that I generally like Robert Rodriguez' movies. In any case, it was fun, the action was great, it looked and sounded good, and the acting wasn't bad either, but admittedly, the writing was a bit garbage. But I still liked it. Onto a very different film, Jojo Rabbit. I was also excited to see this one, as I like Taika Waititi's work as well. I thought this was good as well, and in general, a better film than Alita, but it's an odd comparison, considering how different they are. I certainly found this one more emotionally impactful (as well as funnier). Vacation-Staycation Eternal Blu-ray Catch-up! Onto another odd duo, though both are certainly fantastical and comedic. Also, both in DolbyVision again (and one also DolbyAtmos sound again). 🎞️ Chapter 19: Labyrinth Chapter 20: The Addams Family 🎬 Had to include a few pictures of this beautiful Labyrinth 4K packaging. I continue to love this movie, that I've seen entirely too many times (if such a thing is possible), and like I've said if many, it looks and sounds great. But it's fun noticing even more details than in the past (through the various releases of it). Also Labyrinth has quite a pedigree; it's conceived/directed by Jim Henson, screenplay by Terry Jones, conceptual design by Brain Froud, and produced by Lucas (and of course, David Bowie). Then there's the Addams Family, whose 4K transfer makes it look better than ever. Vacation-Staycation Eternal Blu-ray Catch-up! The next two are an odd pairing, but well, they are both kinda noir-ish (one considerably more than the other admittedly). Both still 4K, both are DolbyVision, and one of them is also DolbyAtmos. 🎞️ Chapter 17: Touch of Evil Chapter 18: The Batman 🎬 Another Kino Lorber 4K with Touch of Evil, a well made noir, directed & screenplay by and starring Orson Welles, along with Janet Leigh, Charlton Heston, and even a special appearance of Marlene Dietrich. Orson Welles plays a convincing bastard. It's some solid noir I'd never seen before (and another old film in 4K that looked pretty great overall) Also, I am very glad the reconstructed version (done using Orson Welles own notes) exists, so it can be seen properly. And of course the much more recent (and less noir, but still some), The Batman, and as it's from this year, not surprisingly it looks/sounds great. It is also quite dark (like, yes, in theme, but also just visually dark, even for a Batman movie). I had a good time with it, and didn't mind the near 3 hour length. Vacation-Staycation Eternal Blu-ray Catch-up! Gonna be doing more 2 at a time posts, as I've got like a dozen to catch up on. Starting with some Kino Lorber 4Ks. In fact, most of these coming ones are 4K. 🎞️ Chapter 15: The Apartment Chapter 16: Some Like it Hot 🎬 These two also happen to both be directed (& produced & partially written) by Billy Wilder, and star Jack Lemmon. Both are also comedies, though The Apartment has notably more drama included as well. It also has Shirley MacLaine, Fred MacMurray, and Ray Walston. Some Like it Hot on the other hand, has Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, George Raft, and Pat O'Brien. Both are acclaimed, won & were nominated for awards, and, both are pretty alright. I may not love them as much as many over the years, but they are good. Also, not terribly surprisingly for their time, both also have problematic elements, but not too severely, at least. Vacation-Staycation Eternal Blu-ray Catch-up! Continuing along to these 1980s/90s Arrow Video releases (One of which is a 4K) 🎞️ Chapter 13: C.H.U.D. Chapter 14: Tremors 🎬 C.H.U.D. stands for Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers, which should be enough alone for me to want to see. Which reminds me, I thought in *had* seen it (well some of it) many years ago, but maybe I imagined it, because I remembered absolutely nothing. In any case, it's alright for what it is. Nothing great, but well made for a 1984 horror/monster film, and like most these films has become a cult classic. Also, it features two actors who went on the be most famous for appearing in Home Alone. Then onto the 4K of 1990's Tremors. This I definitely had seen before, though not for a very long time. Vacation-Staycation Eternal Blu-ray Catch-up! And onto the 1970s Arrow Video blu-rays. I'd also like to point out that, while the Arrow releases may not get quite the full care to level of say, Criterion releases, they are nevertheless, very well done, and notably, they release many ones that Criterion never would. 🎞️ Chapter 11: The Bird with the Crystal Plumage Chapter 12: Horror Express 🎬 1970's The Bird with the Crystal Plumage was Dario Argento's directing debut. This film is more thriller than horror, but both often feature as elements of giallo, which is its primary genre. It is a murder mystery, which is certainly well made, visually fairly daring, at turns gorgeous and violent. Certainly quite the debut film. And though it is much better known and celebrated, of these two films, I personally prefer 1972's Horror Express. It was a British-Spanish co-production, and featured Hammer Horror alums, Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. This alone would've been enough to sell me on it, but I also found quite a bit better than I was initially expecting it would be. Yes, there is some corniness, but there's also a lot of quality to be enjoyed. And I love a good train movie. Next I went onto a handful of Arrow Video releases of horror/thriller films, but because there are several or more, I decided to do them a couple at at time, split up by decade for convenience. 🎞️ Chapter 9: Blood Feast (+ Scum of the Earth) Chapter 10: 2000 Maniacs (+ Moonshine Mountain) 🎬 So the 1960s ones are all Herschell Gordon Lewis films. I would like to point out that these are not good films, but (some) are enjoyable, definitely not because of their quality, though often in part *because* of how low quality they are. He was known as the godfather of gore, and fittingly, as he created the first splatter movie, 1963's Blood Feast. Included with that was the nearly unwatchable Scum of the Earth (also '63), which was considered the first "roughie" film. It is bad (& not gory). The other I watched was his next splatter film, 1964's 2000 Maniacs. There is a noticeable uptick in gore effects quality, and a nominal uptick in acting. It is itself somewhat of a progenitor of the so-called "hicksploitation" horror film (Texas Chainsaw Massacre being the most famous example). Vacation-Staycation Eternal Blu-ray Catch-up! Finishing off my 4K Spider-Mans block is this Spider-Man adjacent film (itself a sequel, and like the others, I'd seen it before, though this one only once, in theaters) 🎞️ Chapter 8: Venom - Let There Be Carnage 🎬 Much like the first Venom movie, this was good fun (in fact, more fun), though it also moves very quickly, so I do also wish it was longer. In any case, the 4K of course looks and sounds great (it did come out only last year after all, and it has DolbyVision & DolbyAtmos-- and I have DolbyVision/DolbyAtmos supporting TV, 4K player, and sound system these days, so it's delightful). There's just something so enjoyable about the relationship journey between Eddie Brock and Venom. Vacation-Staycation Eternal Blu-ray Catch-up! Continuing with the Spidermen-- the Spider-Mans, I then went onto the 4K releases of the Sam Raimi trilogy. 🎞️ Chapter 7: Spider-Man Trilogy (Sam Raimi's) 🎥 I without any doubt prefer the Sam Raimi Spider-Man films over the ones with Andrew Garfield starring (though the first Andrew Garfield one is probably a better film than Spider-Man 3), and I may even still like the first 2 of these better overall than a couple of the Tom Holland ones, though I do love them. In any case, they all look better in 4K, which was nice to see (though certain CGI moments in 3 are still pretty rough), and, well anyways, I for one was happy to see Toby as Spidey again in more recent times. Also, JK Simmons is a treasure, and it pleases me to no end that he appeared as J. Jonah Jameson again in the Room Holland films. Speaking of treasures, Bruce Campbell.
