mike has a staring problem. it's especially noticeable early in the mornings and late at nights, when he's only really half-awake and half-aware of what he's doing.

he's even less conscious on the effect it has, especially on you. you start stumbling over your words when you realize his eyes are fixed on you in such a concentrated way. you know he's just focused, probably engrossed in what it is you're saying, but you can't help the little patter your heart does.

and, you won't deny, you have a problem, too. though it's usually because you're enamored - captivated by the way mike's eyes have reflected the sun, or completely distracted by the way his eyes crinkle at the edges.

but when mike catches you staring, you tell him exactly why each time, sending a soft flush to his face.

tonight, however, mike's eyes will not leave yours, no matter how many times you've caught him. you'll catch him, look away, look back a few minutes later and still see him staring. you're starting to think he's fallen asleep with his eyes open when he reaches over, pressing a quick kiss to your lips.

you're a little stunned, immediately forgetting the story you were telling him about a coworker. but he's back to staring, his head propped up on his hand, his elbow sinking into the pillows, waiting expectantly for you to continue.

you turn, scowling now, to face mike.

"you've been staring at me all night," you frown.

"really?" mike says, his voice low from the weariness, but you can't tell if he's being sarcastic. though, usually, his capacity for that clocks out around nine p.m.

"and you just interrupted me."

"sorry." at least that one's genuine. "didn't mean to." mike kisses you again - this time, you can't say he interrupted you.

"do i have something on my face?"

"yeah," mike replies softly, reaching up to hold your face. but he doesn't continue.

"mike."

"hmm?"

you look at him expectantly, but if he picks up on it, you can't tell.

mike doesn't stop his staring, or his holding of your face. he's begun to swipe his thumb over your cheek now - slowly, delicately.

"i'm falling in love with you."

it's quiet - but it's certain. you're sure you haven't misheard and the edges of your mouth curl into a smile.

"really?"

"mhm."

"why's that?"

mike does his best to shrug. "just am."

you wish you could keep this image of mike forever - a certain softness around him that only shows in his most vulnerable hours.

"are you falling in love with me?" mike asks, his eyes still wide despite his clear exhaustion.

you grab mike's hand on your face, pushing his fingertips to your lips. you hold him, steady, laying him down till he's holding you to his side.

there's no ounce of apprehension behind your answer, a truth that has been floating around without the proper words to express it.

"yeah," you say quietly, wondering if mike is still awake to hear you. "i am."

Kelly had been taken off shift as soon as Boden was informed of your predicament. A replacement came in and Kelly left 51 with everyone on edge.

With Trudy's permission, Kelly joined Hailey along with all the other units as they scoured the streets, looking up and down and all around for any sign of any of the Halsteads.

Kelly could remember it as though it was yesterday. The Murray brothers first came into their lives on a call that both 51 and intelligence responded to, a mere coincidence honestly and Med was the nearest hospital, so it only made sense.

The ever intriguing and elusive Halstead siblings drew in the Murray's and low and behold, several days later, you never turned up to shift.

Your kidnapping several years ago, a moment in all your lives that had been buried deep had suddenly resurfaced and Kelly could only think and prepare himself for the worst.

Huffing in par anger and par disappointment, Kelly looked up to the darkening sky, the sunset slowly fading would usually be a beautiful sight but today, it had no significance to him. In fact, it only made him think of you more.

"Come one Severide." Hailey pressed her lips together tightly, her smile strained and eyes dim. She was just as exhausted and distraught as him, she knew exactly what he was going through. "Everyone's reconveing with Trudy."

Before Kelly could reply, a phone went off. Confused, both he and Hailey checked their individual phones, Kelly tucking his back into his pocket when it wasn't his.

Already on edge, Kelly stood nervously, watching Hailey's face closely for any sign as to what she was being told.

"We need to go to Med."

"Listen, I'm fine! Back off and let me go!"

Hailey swallowed thickly, heart thundering out of her chest as she heard the voice she adored in secret. Picking up the pace, she pulled open the curtains and stood frozen in the trauma doorway.

"Jay." She said breathlessly, refusing to blink in fear that this was all a dream and she was going to wake up to the reality that he wasn't here at Med and alive.

"Thank goodness Hailey." Jay let himself deflate ever so slightly at the sight of his partner, but there was no time for pleasantries. "Get me out of here."

Hailey only now let herself blink, several times in fact due to her shock at her partners words. Jay was covered in blood and it was obvious to the naked eye that he was hurt. She heard the 911 audio, she knew he'd been shot but God knows how many injuries had been inflicted onto him.

Hailey hadn't been in Intelligence when the Murray brothers first came about, neither was she there for any of the Halstead siblings separate kidnappings so she was trekking in unknown territory.

"Listen Ethan, Will patched me up good." Jay began, turning to the Korean doctor who he knew was concerned about all of their well-beings'. "As soon as I get them back, I'll get seen."

Ethan wanted to argue but knew there was nothing stopping the middle sibling, rolling his eyes he turned to Maggie and asked for some painkillers before addressing him. "The second they're found, you're back in this treatment room."

"Scout's honour doc." Jay promised seriously, taking the tablets and chugging them back with some water he was given by Maggie. "I'll be fine."

And with that, Jay was walking out the room with Hailey trying to keep up with him.

"Jay? What the hell happened?" Hailey asked, picking up her pace so she could stay in step with him. She took note of the fire burning in his eyes and the determination he had in each step despite being injured.

"Where's Voight and everyone else?" Jay asked, ignoring her question as he caught sight of Severide leaning against Hailey's parked car outside the ER.

"They're on their way back." Hailey said, nodding at Kelly to get in the car, shaking her head at him so he wouldn't ask any questions despite how much he wanted to.

"Your hurt and you’re bleeding Jay, you need-“

“My brother and my sister are on the verge of death Hailey!” Jay shouted with a mix of fear, anger and hurt. “They’re bleeding somewhere and my baby sister is scared to death and I need to help them.”

His shouts echoed in the packed out parking lot, his chest heaving as he went on with no one stopping him.

“Will and Y/N are all I have left Hailey.” Jay said shakily, largely contrasting the sheer force he just spoke in. “I’m going to help, I don’t care if it’s the last thing I do.”

There was nothing stopping a man who was about to lose all that he had left to live for.

Intelligence was finally whole again with the addition of Trudy and Kelly, all huddled together under a tent that was set up on middle ground.

When they arrived back in Chicago, the sheer amount of shock on everyone's face was evident.

Trudy had sworn everyone to secrecy but when she first saw Jay, her motherly instincts acted upon themselves as she squeezed the daylights out of him without causing any further injury.

"They dumped me." Jay said, revealing to the team how he'd gotten here. "They suddenly decided to move locations again and decided to dump me around the corner from Med which means they want me alive."

"What about Will and Y/N?" Antonio asked, being the first person to interject Jay since he started to unravel all the small necessary things.

Jay clenched and unclenched his jaw, his eye twitching in frustration as he folded his arms.

"They're still with Jackson and Ezra."

"No offense Jay but why would they get rid of you instead of Will?" Adam genuinely asked, confused as to why two criminals would release the ex-ranger and detective instead of the ER doctor.

All of a sudden, Jay looked like he was going to be sick. Like his new train of thought was going to make him throw up then and there.

"They want to keep Y/N alive for as long as possible, and only Will can do that."

"Is it really necessary to dance at the next unbirthday party?"

"Of course it is. Rule #453: "For the 49th unbirthday party of the year, guests must dance with a partner at least once before the party ends." There will be no exceptions to this rule. It's a rarity to reach this many unbirthday parties and we need it to be celebrated as intended."

You're not surprised by the odd rule. At this point, you nearly expect to hear a rule for everything under the sun and moon. What does surprise you is how many unbirthday parties have been held in such a short amount of time. And, you'd have to agree with him on the matter. If this unbirthday party had a specific rule then it wouldn't hurt to follow it, especially since it added a little flair to the usual scene.

Not that the past ones were dull, heavens no! Every party was a blast and you were grateful to be invited to each one. Dining with Trey's perfectly crafted food, photobombing Cater's selfies, beating your best friends at croquet, and spending tea time with Riddle. What more could you ask for?

You would definitely be attending the next unbirthday party, regardless of your dancing skills. Yet, the thought of having to dance with someone makes you nervous. You can already hear Ace's teasing if you step on your partner's foot.

(Maybe he should be your partner and you could unintentionally step on him whenever he opens his mouth. Just a thought. A tempting one.)

"What if...someone doesn't know how to dance?"

You doubt you could get out of it. Sure, Riddle allowed you to break a few rules here and there. You weren't from his dorm despite how often you were seen in Heartslabyul. And you did your best to follow the more common ones whenever you could, but it's impossible to remember all the rules. It's amazing how Riddle knew them all by heart.

"Nonsense. Everyone should know how to," Riddle states. He pauses before wearing a worrisome look. "Although, I don't quite understand the latest dances. Cater would know more about those."

You smile and hold back a chuckle. It's hard not to imagine one of the boys doing one of the latest dance trends. This next party is definitely going to be...interesting.

"I dislike the thought of changing the rules, but if I could I'd like to add that the dance should be formal." He emphasizes the last word. He's already dreading the fact of what he may have to see at the party.

"What kind of formal dance are you planning to do?" You ask, curious.

"The waltz."

"You know how to waltz?"

"Yes. Mother taught me when I was young."

Your eyes sparkle upon hearing his answer. In a fit of excitement, you push yourself up from your seat. Your gaze is fixated on Riddle, looking at him with pleading eyes.

"Can you teach me? I'll be your partner for the party!"

He blinks, startled by the sudden outburst. It takes a moment for him to gather himself. He clears his throat and glances at the clock hanging on the wall.

It's late. Unlike most in this school, Riddle hates staying up past midnight. And the clock is ticking. It doesn't help that it's already past his curfew. Oh, if only his mother knew about the rules he'd been breaking...

But when he looks at you, he finds it terribly hard to say no. If he were, he knows that you would lose that shine in your eyes. That twinkling brightness that he simply adored. To see a despondent haze instead? No. He simply couldn't have it.

"V-Very well, Prefect," he breathes. "There is still time until the party. While I won't expect a perfect dance if you are to be the Queen's partner you will perform as a King should." His cheeks flare up after realizing what he said. Before he could take back the implication, you'd already snatched his hand in between yours.

"Thank you! I promise that I'll do my best to be a good King!"

The fact that you parrot being his King only makes his face flush a deep red. He turns his gaze elsewhere and tries his best to ignore the harsh beating in his chest. It doesn't hurt and it spreads an unfamiliar warmth throughout his body. He can't tell if he's loosening up or tense now.

To distract himself and the funny feeling, he puts a hand at your back while the other links with your hand, holding it away from you both.

A bright smile graces your face. Your free hand goes to rest on his arm. You let your fingers lightly tap against his, feeling the smoothness of his knuckles. You hadn't realized just how small his hands are compared to yours. Nor how short he is. Well, you know he's short, but standing so close to him and looking down at him just feels odd. The way he holds himself with such assertiveness makes him seem taller. He always holds his head high and proud, never a doubt in his mind about what he does.

"The most important rule for a dance is to never look at your feet. Eyes are to be kept up, remaining on your partner."

You nod. You take one last glance at your footing, wanting to imitate his stance before your gaze meets with his. He does the same, inspecting your posture and position before his eyes lock onto yours. A tint of red colors his cheeks once more.

"Follow my command. I'll lead."

And so, the dance begins. It's kept simple—one step followed by another. Riddle explains the timing and the necessity of starting off by doing the box step. Once the basics are perfected, then you could do the more intensive steps.

As you dance, you focus on Riddle. It's hard to look elsewhere when he's practically shining. With the way he speaks, instructs you with a stern yet soft tone, and how he makes sure his touch is gentle yet firm. He doesn't bark at you whenever you mess up, only asking you to repeat the action to fix your mistake. When you intentionally do a misstep or try to play around, he pouts. He weakly threatens to end this dancing session but doesn't live up to it.

"You're picking up on this fast," he says as you circle around. He stopped muttering out the timing for you a few rounds ago.

"Thanks," you respond. "I don't think I'm cut out for dancing, but...I've always adored watching others do it. Especially the fancier ones." You let out a sigh.

It may have been a secret wish of yours to find a partner to pull off one of those dances with. Seeing couples move in sync, breathing as if they were one, practically reading each other's minds- it was beautiful. And you dreamed of doing the same. To dance around a fancy ballroom, to spin and glide around the dance floor.

But those dreams could never be obtained, at least not in your home world. Funny how it could be in this one. Or at least this is a start.

"I think you're cut out for it," he replies, voice barely above a whisper as he attempts to praise you. "You're not a natural, but you're better at this compared to when I first started."

"R-Really?"

Your heart flutters in your chest. To hear this come from Riddle makes your heart leap for joy. You give his hand a tight squeeze and consider twirling him around if you wouldn't lose your head for doing so.

"It's thanks to your help though. You're a good teacher. Ah-!" You come to a sudden stop, recalling your original reasoning for meeting him. You needed help with an assignment and asked for his assistance. You claimed not to take up his time and you finally noticed that you took more than you should.

"I'm sorry! I didn't know how late it was..." You tear your hand away from his shoulder and loosen your grasp with your other. Slowly, your hand slips out from his. "Your curfew!"

A gasp escapes you, realizing just how much wrong you've done to him. Perhaps you really will lose your head tonight! Not that it would affect you, but having one of those collars hang around your neck didn't exactly seem pleasant.

In your panic, you don't notice the frown that had fallen upon his face. Your parting from his had left him cold. You'd brought him such a delicate warmth and then stolen it back within an instant. He wants to reach out for your hand and take it once more. But he doesn't know how.

"Prefect."

He calls for your attention, more sternly. Now you really feel like you've done something wrong. A whine escapes you before a thought hits you. He must be reminding you of a rule! But which one? You can feel that one is just begging to be followed. Think. Think. Think.

Oh!

"Thank you for the lesson, Riddle," you say with a slight bow.

You aren't too sure how to go about this. The Queen's rules are strange and one imperfect action could cost your head. But you might as well do what you can while the rule is fresh in your mind. At least, you hope it's the right one.

Treating him like a Queen, you get down onto one knee. You let your hand slip back into his and pull it towards you. Soft lips press against his skin. They brush against the same knuckles you enjoyed feeling earlier.

"P-Prefect?!"

You blink and release his hand, looking up at him.

"Was that incorrect?" You ask, worried. His face was red once more. You couldn't tell if it was from anger or something else. You feared it was the former and decided to prepare yourself for the worst outcome.

But that collar never appears around your neck. It never would.

"No," he breathes, calm. "That is...correct. I simply wasn't expecting you to know what rule #512 is. "If you dance with the Queen after midnight, you must kiss her hand as the final act"."

"I knew it!" You jumped to your feet, cheerfully as if you had learned you got full marks on a test. Then a pause. "There's...no other rule I'm forgetting, is there? I'd hate to break one after all you've done for me."

"There isn't. You're fine with the rules. But, how do you know that one?"

As far as he knows, Trey would be the only one to have an inkling of the majority of the rules in this kingdom. And for you, an outsider, to know this one? It's...surprising.

You wear a sheepish smile as you scratch the back of your head.

"I've just...wanted to learn the rules." For you, you silently add. That addition makes your cheeks flare. Even if you hadn't uttered those words, it feels as if you confessed them aloud. "A-Anyway! I should let you go. The Queen needs his sleep."

You're quick to thank him and gather your things. Everything is shoved into your bag as you nearly race to the door. You find yourself hesitating, not wanting to leave just yet.

"Can we continue tomorrow?" You ask, hopeful.

Riddle looks at you from his position. His gaze had been lingering on the hand you'd gently kissed. His mind had gone into a haze, unable to think clearly. If anyone else were to call for him, he wouldn't have heard them. You were filling his thoughts far too much.

"Lessons start promptly after lunch. I hope to see you then, Prefect."

and just some info on me :

i love men <3 ; i am open to listening to all sorts of music genres so long as it fits the mood, however, i tend to lean more towards R&B/Soul/Hip-Hop, Indie and Alternative Lo-fi, my favourite movies are all studio ghibli or animated movies, my top love languages are acts of service, quality and physical touch. i love deep conversations and listening to people tell me their story - getting to know more about other people is one of my favourite things to do. i want to be a mother one day, im a hopeless romantic who is very much into self-care and self-pampering, i also love baking, especially cookies and apple pie. i love art but enjoy paper crafting and watercolours the best and my aesthetic would be soft girl/light academia. i love my friends and family and value them above anyone else to the point where, if they were threatened/hurt in anyway, i would get incredibly angry and overprotective, which is rare for me to be.

some bad traits now... TT^TT time to expose myself - i can get pretty lazy, i tend to get into planning my life a little too much, i have perfectionist tendencies, im horrible at replying to people and can't resist chocolate and donuts or dairy products even though im lactose intolerant...i also tend to ramble sometimes for example, this paragraph XD

mike stands beside you at the edge of the bed, hovering over you protectively like an angel. it's clear something is wrong by the way you refuse to get up, your knees tightly curled up to your chest, and the frown that won't disappear from your face. mike is forced to play detective, seeing as you decline to tell him exactly what's going on.

"what can i do to help?" mike asks sweetly. you turn to look at him; his demeanor is gentle, his eyes are full of concern.

you groan. "go away." you roll back over, taking the blanket and pulling it over your head.

"well, at least you're not sick," you hear mike's slightly muted voice say from outside the little cocoon you hide in. a few moments of suspicious silence pass before you feel the spot beside you sink down with mike's weight. you feel him shift beside you, sure that if you stick your head out you'll see him staring at you.

well, you need more air anyway.

you pull the blanket down partially - and as suspected, you're face-to-face with mike. it's quiet, but while mike may struggle to find the right words to say, he wastes no time with the gentle touches. his hand finds your shoulder (only struggling a little), rubbing up and down your arm softly.

"will you tell me what's wrong?" mike's voice is sweeter than sugar when he speaks, not too loud in case your head hurts.

you move, but you move closer and when you groan, it's into mike's chest. the warmth he radiates doubles as comfort, bringing some relief to your body as you cling to him.

"nothing," you insist quite unconvincingly, burrowing your head deeper into mike.

but mike doesn't push. he only digs his way underneath the blanket with you, hands on your back soothingly. he's desperately hoping you'll fess up soon because he's running out of options.

you groan again, fingers messing with a loose thread on mike's shirt as you try to avoid looking at him.

"my uterus is bleeding," you finally admit, looking incredibly deflated.

mike holds back any relief from showing on his face, glad it's just that (he seriously feared you were going to tell him you were breaking up with him) though he currently would not dare to express this to your face. maybe next week.

"okay," mike nods, giving a quick press of his lips to your forehead. "that's fine. that's fixable. well - not fixable, but we can make it better."

you're quiet, still messing with mike's shirt. your fingers ball up some of the fabric as you manage the strength to look up at mike. "we?"

"we," mike nods in confirmation. he doesn't mind expressing the relief he feels when your expression of despair finally cracks with a smile. mike pulls you closer and adjusts until he hears a pleased sigh from your lips.

he holds you there for a few moments, transferring you the warmth from his hands and his chest. mike's fingers draw small patterns on your exposed skin, acting as an all-encompassing, at-your-service heating pad.

mike doesn't mind the new job, enjoying the proximity he keeps to you and pleased to know he's able to do something that makes you feel better. mike notices your eyes beginning to close, glad you're able to get some more rest.

"now will you tell me what you need?" mike asks before you can fall to sleep, wanting to be prepared by the time you wake up.

you groan so softly it's more like a hum, sending small vibrations through mike. "it's a whole list," you complain.

Hello! Thank you very much! I hope this is okay, I am an anime only so my knowledge of Choso is limited to the 30 seconds we saw him in the last episode and some fics I’ve read haha. But please, enjoy!

Choso stands at the foot of the bed, eyes open comically wide. You can’t expect him to actually get in there with you, can you?? He didn’t sign up for this when he offered to keep you company on your mission. He’s finally come to terms with the fact that he’s very interested in you, and this is what he’s faced with. A night alone with you in a very tiny hotel bed.

“Are you going to get in or what?”

His eyes dart to you, already curled up on your side of the bed. You blink sleepily at him, holding the covers up as if to invite him into your cozy nest. He clenches his hands into fists. You look so warm and soft and he’s absolutely going to lose his mind if he has to spend the whole night lying next to you.

Is this what humans call “being in love”? It feels so foreign, so out of place for a monster as wretched as him. But he aches for it, for every second he can bask in the sunlight that is you.

“It-it wouldn’t be respectful, right? To sleep in the same bed as you when we aren’t....” he trails off, feeling his cheeks warm.

You giggle softly. “Things are different now, since you were in a tube for 150 years. Lots of people share beds, even if they aren’t together in that way.”

He frowns, feeling silly. “Oh. I still have a lot to learn, don’t I?”

“It’s okay,” you smile at him, his favourite smile that sets his whole cursed being on fire. “I’m happy to teach you, Choso. Now get in, it’s bedtime.”

Well, there’s nothing to be done about it. He’s going to just have to deal with sleeping next to his favourite human. He climbs in slowly and carefully, doing his best to stay as far away from you as possible. Lying stiffly on his back, he takes deep breathes to calm his frantically racing heart.

In, out. In, out. He can do this.

Time slows and his body freezes when you suddenly roll towards him and burrow yourself into his side, his heart skipping a beat at the contented sigh that leaves your lips.

“I’m cold. This okay?”

“Y-Yes,” he squeaks, wishing he sounded more confident and less like a scared mouse.

“Good. I just feel so safe when you’re near,” you mumble, nuzzling him like an adorable kitten. “Goodnight, Choso. Have sweet dreams.”

He smiles softly down at you, your body quickly relaxing into sleep. Hope blooms in his chest. Perhaps there’s a chance for him, perhaps in the morning he’ll have the courage to say something. But for now, he’s happy to wrap his arms around you and hold you close.

“Goodnight, my precious human. No dream could be sweeter than this.”
