Ukobach: the new mystery demon?
How is Ukobach, one of the more reproduced demons from the Dictionnaire Infernal, a tome of some infamy, a mystery? Well, similar to our old pals Stonka and Forbi, something’s missing here: a primary source. Like Wikipedia, the Dictionnaire is merely a reference, not itself a source of original research (or experience, as far as occult matters can go).
To that, I’m confident Collin de Plancy did not invent Ukobach. Prompted by the Ukobach situation itself, I recently dug through older demonology books looking for him; while coming up empty on Ukobach, I did discover a source for the likes of Adramelech, Melchom, and Nisroc, to name a few: Johann Weyer’s De praestigiis daemonum. Nisroc isn’t described as a chef here, but the name is listed--that’s literally all I’m seeking for Ukobach: a name in a book that predates the original 1818 publication date of the Dictionnaire.
So, some clues. Here’s what I’ve got. First, and because of course we were just talking about her books the other day, a description from Rosemary Guiley’s Encyclopedia of Demons and Demonology:
Jack-o’-lantern lamp oil “lore”? There’s also some speculation that the original form of his name may have been Urobach and that it may relate him to Orobas. Last, other, possibly dubious, descriptions from the original Ukobach Wikipedia page from March 20, 2007, like being a demon of cardinal West; also the fascinating quote “Beelzebub has assigned to him the task of keeping oil in the infernal cauldrons but also we find him mentioned in many other stations, almost as if he were the 'Stationary Engineer’ of Hell.” Never needed a citation so badly. Anyway, here are all the known and possible Ukobach keywords and descriptions:
Inventor of fried food and fireworks
Demon of a low order; may need superior demon to speak for him
In charge of feeding flaming coals/oil to Hell’s boilers by Beelzebub (Belzebuth)
Possibly found at “many other stations” in Hell
Using coals to torture the damned
Body aflame
Lamp oil for jack-o’-lantern
Alt. name Urobach and possible relation to Orobas
Demon of the West
I’m most interested by the “other stations” and Orobas comments! One final note, French sources might be the key. Ukobach is definitely a favorite (except when he’s on Kaneko’s Crib Notes), so I really hope he’s “real”!
