Google Germany blocking AO3 in search results

I haven't seen anything on this cross my dash, and I thought it was worth bringing here with as much accuracy as possible. (I first encountered it on Reddit.)

Currently (24.12.2022) Google is blocking AO3 from search results in Germany as a result of a complaint.

It is only Google, not other search engines. The government did not request it. It has nothing to do with copyright. It does not impact access to the site itself. ETA: If you use Chrome, it may not let you bookmark AO3 URLs (reports are mixed).

I tested it using a VPN set to Germany, searching for my AO3 username. This is a Google search for leveragehunters showing no AO3 results while connected to a German VPN:

A DuckDuckGo search for leveragehunters while connected to a German VPN - AO3 is the third and fifth hit.

The bottom of the Google search using the German VPN states:

What was the complaint? You can read it here (and it is seriously light on information): https://lumendatabase.org/notices/9415, but it says:

A URL that otherwise would have appeared in response to your search was not displayed because that URL was reported as illegal under German youth protection laws.

Ihre Suche hätte in den Suchergebnissen einen Treffer generiert, den wir Ihnen nicht anzeigen, da uns mitgeteilt wurde, dass die entsprechende URL rechtswidrig gemäß deutscher Jugendschutzgesetze ist.

Like I said up there, this was not a government request. Government requests to remove material from Google say so on the notice (see, for example: https://lumendatabase.org/notices/30045178 or all of these).

Anyone can make a complaint to Google and ask them to remove something for allegedly violating local laws. I suspect what's happened is that someone has reported the top level AO3 URL to Google through their procedures and that Google, being the knee-jerk risk-adverse devil company that it is, has blocked the site pending investigation (AKA lawyers saying yes or no) or just went stuff it, a shoddy complaint's good enough cause we don't actually care.

While I recognise the annoyance caused by Tumblr constantly moving stuff around in the user interface, as far as I can tell they’re not trying to “trick” anyone into signing up for an account.

There have always been two distinct ways to link to a Tumblr post:

a link to view that post on the owner’s public-facing blog

a link to view that post on the current user’s dashboard

There are situations where either of these might be preferable, so it’s not a matter of one is the Good Link and the other is the Bad Link – Tumblr just keeps fucking with exactly how you find each one for any given post, because they’re constitutionally incapable of leaving well enough alone.

That said, if you are in a situation where you want the first one, on desktop you can mouse over the top-right corner of the white box containing the post, and a little tab will appear that links to the post’s public-facing URL, if any – just right-click that to grab the link. That’s been there for years, and as far as I’m aware, none of the recent or pending desktop UI changes have messed with it.

ftr i am leaving the country tonight for two weeks, bringing my ipad but we'll see how often i use it lol. But I hope to do a lot of writing on the flights, going to start the second draft of mvf 3 (title pending). Given that the framing device of each book is that it's being narrated to the reader by a different entity, I'm really excited about the last book. We've heard from puck and esk, but we know.. so very little about islin's patron (the 'm' of mvf). So I'm hoping to do some structural weirdness.. originally was going to be house of leaves style paragraph anarchy but it wouldn't do well on e-readers unless I baked the page text as an image (then provided an image description).. we'll see. But I'm excited either way

hello my loves!!!! long time no talk!!!!! 💕💕🫶🏻🫶🏻 things have been very crazy and insane lately, between doctors appointments for me, a pending surgery for my step-dad, taking care of my niece, and everything else in between. but!! the long awaited day6 comeback is finally upon us in two hours!!! some of you might know i got into day6 right around the time 'right through me' and eternal dropped, and i was so excited! and then...they all immediately enlisted lmao. as i described to a friend the other day, i felt like i was led into a looney tunes style trap discovering them. having to wait out that time was awful, but we slowly got them all back and now! we're finally here! if you were around for 'letters with notes' i'll be pretty vigilant in getting everything posted (mostly) on time, first few days is always kind of insane, but it should all be up in a decently timely manner! i am making a change in regards to video call stuff, mostly in that if it's not available in a global sense, i probably won't post about it, mostly because they can be kinda finicky in regards to even applying, and i don't want to lead you guys into a false sense of excitement. if they are though, don't worry! i got you! gonna keep the masterpost updated as well, performances, promo, etc. also! guys!
