12, 33, and 36
-from a HS junior that's scared of my future lol
12. What has been the most interesting class you’ve taken?
I'm still in first year, partway finished my second term (mainly due to trade school, covid, grade-boosting, and working). I'm currently doing all my pre-reqs for pharmacy school. One of my profs for my biology lectures was really into bats (labelled "Bat-man" by many in his field), and brought a bat into one the lectures, he's also a Leafs fan and I frequently see him in the gym before classes (seems like a genuinely good guy). It was a hard class, however, I thoroughly enjoyed it. My current favourite class is "Critical Reading and Writing II" as the main topic of the lecture is children's fantasy literature. My prof is great, as she is a very fair marker, gives good feedback, and I can access the class content as she records all of her lectures.
33. The best advice anyone has ever given you about university?
There's been quite a few bits of advice that I've been given that have all been helpful:
don't take five classes in your first term, the transition from high school is hard, especially if you're moving away. I'm currently in 5 classes, with a job, and other school responsibilities and it's kicking my ass 10/10 don't recommend what I'm doing right now
READ RATE MY PROF before choosing your profs for your classes. Sometimes you won't have the option (like math and stats for me this term) and you'll be stuck with a bad prof, I lucked out with my chem and bio profs, as well as my English prof (who I was initially put on the waitlist for this term, had her last term and loved her, and only wanted to be in her English if given the option).
Get involved, join clubs and talk to people. I've made the vast majority of my friends while living in dorm, as we live and eat together. A lot of my other friends have been made through clubs and classes, don't be afraid to reach out and talk to someone. I'm hella shy and I've made friends by sitting in the same spot all term and talking to them.
Get help before it's too late. Know your prof's office hours and use them. They'll hopefully be able to help you through questions that you've been struggling with/too embarrassed to ask. They ultimately want to help you. Sorta on the same topic, if your school has a free tutoring centre, use that to your advantage. They have saved a few English papers last term.
Talk to a university academic advisor as well. They will be able to answer questions that your councillor in high school won't be able to answer for you.
Read ahead, and I cannot stress this enough. So you know the content before going into class, many profs also assume that you know some of the material before class. Make questions of your pre-reading, and ask them if they haven't been answered by the end of the lecture. If my prof gives the slideshow before the class, I make notes from that, and then during the lecture, I fill in with the notes I made during the lecture. For the profs that don't, I try to read the textbook chapter and take out the key points and expand off of that.
If your school has a discord, find it and use it to. I found my university's through Reddit. Ask questions about classes, profs, talk to people in your program and other first years. Class-specific discords to share notes and questions has been helpful as well.
Failing isn't the end of the world. Yes, it sucks. Make corrections from the mistakes you made from your assignments, quizzes, tests, midterms, etc... so you know what areas you need to improve on for the final.
You are there because you want to be there, as well as the people around you.
Choose which school you're going to wisely, don't go solely because your friends are going, you're going to see them much less than you think. What areas is the school strong in, what areas do they lack in? Do you want to be close or away from home? Costs, scholarships available, etc... are things that you should take into consideration.
You're allowed to change your major. I had friends in pre-med change to education, one change from pre-vet to classics, English to psychology, general sciences to social work, and my childhood best friend started off in ASTROPHYSICS and is hoping to get their masters in library sciences. Heck, I'm in pre-pharmacy, and working in hockey right now. All subjects are intertwinned and inter-related somehow. So if you start off as a STEM major, and switch to psychology for example, you haven't wasted your education, and you'll somehow use your STEM education within your major. My riding coach was in bio-med, now works full time in coaching and horses, and she uses her knowledge every single day.
University isn't for everyone. For some it may mean that trade school might be the right choice for them, others it means taking a gap year to "experience the world," work, or whatever. As harsh as it sounds, some people (including some of my friends) simply do not possess the maturity (academic and emotional) to be there, this is particularly evident when people are staying far away from home to pursue their university education. A lot of places pressure students to go to university right after high school, it is not the right move for a lot of people.
36: How did your attitude towards studying and school change between high school and university?
This has been a huge one for me. I was going through a lot in high school that made studying personally very difficult (uncaring and bad teachers, faculty, and staff in high school, undiagnosed ADHD, a laundry list of mental health issues, bullying, personal life etc). I'm in university because I want to be here, studying what I want, where I want. I'm generally enthusiastic about what I'm doing, while being surrounded by like-minded peers. I also study a lot more as university costs a lot, I literally cannot afford to fail a class (mainly in the financial sense, but also for the fact that pharmacy school is incredibly competitive). Being far away from home has helped me significantly, but I realize that this may not be the right option for everyone for a variety of factors.
If you have any question, please feel free to reach out to me.
Best of luck. I believe in you.
I'm almost 22, I'm scared of what the future hold for me. I have very little idea what I want to do with my life, I have a "general direction," but that's about it.
So far, university has been one of the best times of my life, despite the stress and costs. I am the happiest I have been in a very long time. I recognize the great amount privilege I have to be in the position that I'm currently in.

For the university asks: 4, 7, 16, and 38!
I’d ask more but I think that would quickly get overwhelming, so here!
Ooooh my first ask! 🥰
4. What do you study?
Currently finishing up my bachelor's in korean studies; I started bc I was studying Korean on my own for funsies, and since I did not know what I wanted to do yet I decided to just go for it :)
7. What is your dream job?
I've been unsure for a long time about what career to pursue, but last spring I finally admitted to myself that I want to go into psychology, I want to help people in their journey to better their life and their relationship with themselves, so aiming for talk therapist/psychologist
I kinda blocked myself from allowing myself to think about taking this path, because imposter syndrome etc, but it just feels like the right fit
16. What is your weird academic niche?
Hmm not sure if I have one or if they are necessarily weird per se, but there are:
Demographics of South Korea and the generation shift that will happen because there will be a lot of elderly people dying in a few decades combined with very, very low fertility rate - currently writing a paper about that topic
Connected to that - the national pension system and old age poverty in south korea
The premodern korean language - I just find it really beautiful and interesting, especially since I love the language so seeing its roots is fascinating. I'm taking a course this semester about that exact topic, where we read annals of the joseon dynasty which lasted over 500 years up until the 20th century. The articles are written by historians at court, who recorded pretty much everything and were with the king at all times, plus - no one but the historians were allowed to read these records so the contents could not be influenced by those in power, so these annals tell us what actually happened (there is one instance where a king fell from his horse and, embarrassed, said to make sure the historian wouldnt write about his mishap 🤭 there are articles about the first elephant in Korea, or social reforms in the 15th century to aid pregnant slaves and reduce their workload and raise maternity leave) really interesting stuff, and these texts can all be accessed for free (in korean tho) which is pretty amazing :) they are also unesco world heritage so that's cool
That's all I can think of rn, but it got longer than I thought 😅
38. Best tips for making friends at uni?
Honestly I think I'm not the best person to ask,
But my input would be:
Try to befriend people you see regularly, it's not only easier because you see them more often, but because of the mere exposure effect you find people see often more likable, so I'd say being aware of that can help :) so...
Join societies or clubs etc - more hobby-specific, or for getting to know people who identify the same/similarly, have a similar background to you, so depending on what you look for :)
If you're more of an introvert like me, it can still pay off to be a bit more proactive than you might normally be. Like starting conversations first(more often), helping each other out at the start when everyone has many questions, etc (very short list but you know 🤷‍♀️ lota possibilities). I like to tell myself and pretend that I am more of an extrovert than I am to trick myself into being more socially proactive, that tends to help me. But don't overdo it with that, so that you don't befriend people that are muuuuch more extroverted than you and maybe not a good fit, making you feel like you need to compromise your needs. (Of course it can work out fine, but kinda experienced that a bit)
Also just try to be yourself even if you don't know yet who that is. Experiment with who you could be if you want to even! If not know when? Just be true to yourself ^^
Oh and also, some go into uni expecting to find their best friends there, being friends with them for life. In my experience you will meet lots of people that you will get to know on a shallow level, that you might vibe with well, but no deeper friendship forms. But that's also okay. And you might also learn what your boundaries are in a way didn't expect, in friendships and with yourself and what is good for you. So even if it turns out you aren't a good fit, or only a shallow friendship works for you that's also amazing. Acquaintances like that are important too imo and you can still learn a lot from all of it :))
I seriously need to learn to condense what I want to say xD
But there you have it ^^
Hope that's not too overwhelming of an answer; I don't know if you started uni already, but maybe there's something in the last part that helps 💕🌸🌱

So Venus is my favorite planet in the solar system - everything about it is just so weird.
Tumblr media
It has this extraordinarily dense atmosphere that by all accounts shouldn't exist - Venus is close enough to the sun (and therefore hot enough) that the atmosphere should have literally evaporated away, just like Mercury's. We think Earth manages to keep its atmosphere by virtue of our magnetic field, but Venus doesn't even have that going for it. While Venus is probably volcanically active, it definitely doesn't have an internal magnetic dynamo, so whatever form of volcanism it has going on is very different from ours. And, it spins backwards! For some reason!!
But, for as many mysteries as Venus has, the United States really hasn't spent much time investigating it. The Soviet Union, on the other hand, sent no less than 16 probes to Venus between 1961 and 1984 as part of the Venera program - most of them looked like this!
Tumblr media
The Soviet Union had a very different approach to space than the United States. NASA missions are typically extremely risk averse, and the spacecraft we launch are generally very expensive one-offs that have only one chance to succeed or fail.
It's lead to some really amazing science, but to put it into perspective, the Mars Opportunity rover only had to survive on Mars for 90 days for the mission to be declared a complete success. That thing lasted 15 years. I love the Opportunity rover as much as any self-respecting NASA engineer, but how much extra time and money did we spend that we didn't technically "need" to for it to last 60x longer than required?
Anyway, all to say, the Soviet Union took a more incremental approach, where failures were far less devastating. The Venera 9 through 14 probes were designed to land on the surface of Venus, and survive long enough to take a picture with two cameras - not an easy task, but a fairly straightforward goal compared to NASA standards. They had…mixed results.
Venera 9 managed to take a picture with one camera, but the other one's lens cap didn't deploy.
Venera 10 also managed to take a picture with one camera, but again the other lens cap didn't deploy.
Venera 11 took no pictures - neither lens cap deployed this time.
Venera 12 also took no pictures - because again, neither lens cap deployed.
Lotta problems with lens caps.
For Venera 13 and 14, in addition to the cameras they sent a device to sample the Venusian "soil". Upon landing, the arm was supposed to swing down and analyze the surface it touched - it was a simple mechanism that couldn't be re-deployed or adjusted after the first go.
This time, both lens caps FINALLY ejected perfectly, and we were treated to these marvelous, eerie pictures of the Venus landscape:
Tumblr media
However, when the Venera 14 soil sampler arm deployed, instead of sampling the Venus surface, it managed to swing down and land perfectly on….an ejected lens cap.

1, 1b, 3, 3a, and 8 for Jeremy (this one oughta be funny)
1. What was their major?
I imagine he started out a regular philosophy major and as time went on he got more and more interested in well certain parts of christianity as he is canonically so his ACTUAL major is christian studies
" A program that focuses on the philosophy and teachings of Jesus Christ and his apostles, and the subsequent intellectual and cultural movements and institutions based on Christianity. Includes instruction in Christian sacred scripture, Christian literature and philosophy, and studies of one or more of the main branches of the faith and their cultural context including Orthodoxy, Roman Catholicism, Protestantism, Evangelicalism, and others."
He'd probably end up teaching the subject instead of becoming a priest like in canon and I don't think his actually practicing students would like him very much.
1a. How about their minor?
Mythology and Occultism
"Analyzes myths, customs, occult wisdom, believes, and rituals from all over the world since ancient Sumeria to the Greeks and Romans up to the Vikings, Inuits, Aztecs, and Aborigines. The great myths of the world and the occult knowledge underlying them give meaning to the fundamental events that characterize human existence: birth, death, conflict, loss, reconciliation, and seasons' cycles. With this wide perspective in mind, this program was developed to critically explore the most important mythological traditions and esoteric knowledge."
3. Did they commute to school or live in a dorm?
He would want to live in a dorm even though he'd probably go to a college close to home, meet some interesting like minded people!
3a. If they lived in a dorm, what was their experience there? Who was their roommate?
No one specifically special just other stoners, with his steady supply of his parents money he'd always have the good weed and the good pizza. Not to mention the philosopical debates and discussions he would have in the dorm common room would be amazing.
8. What class did they struggle in?
Probably "Ethical Thinking in the Liberal Arts" cause well...you know, plus he's lazy and putting in the effort to debate with the kinds of people that make up the majority of his chosen degree is much much more effort than he thinks it'd be worth.

Prompt 271
“Grandmother is visiting,” Damian suddenly said with no warning and with his usual not-quite demanding tone.
“Who?” Tim wasn’t the only one to startle, seeing as Bruce had practically froze, a downturn to his lips in a silent show of confusion.
Damian scowled. “Are you deaf Drake? Grandmother is coming to Gotham to, quote, make sure I am being properly cared for.” None of them had known that Ras was with anyone actually. At least Tim was pretty sure that would have been in the files.
“Oh?” Dick didn’t quite crouch to Damian’s height but it was a near thing. “She-” “He,” Damian corrected, interrupting him. They all exchanged a glance before Dick continued.
“Is he coming to the Manor or…”
Damian scoffed again, a tiny bit of a flush against his face. “No, Grandmother will most likely be staying with Akhi-”
Now wait one moment-
“YOU HAVE ANOTHER BROTHER?!”

I am never inclined to make fun of tumblr's cheesy attempts to make money and generally support them even if you consider them cringe. Websites need money to operate and tumblr needs to find a way to make money consistently or it will cease to exist. I do not want tumblr to cease to exist, and the most common alternative method of making money is to collect and sell all of our personal data, which I do not want either. Websites that can support themselves via people willing to spend $25 bucks to commit to a bit is a sign of a brighter and more sustainable version of the internet.

sometimes i worry that *i'm* wrong and SU is bad/rushed/blah blah. then i remember whites fragile need to be perfect and ego defense of thinking she's fixing things. i remember how its perfectly mirrored by stevens need to fix others. how its both beautifully symbolic in CYM an made more explicit and heart-rending in future.
yeah that shit rules. white being reformed is great. its the ultimate rebuttal to the ideology that only good/useful/perfect people deserve to live- which is exactly the standard white held herself and everyone else to. it mirrors stevens arc of selfless heroism. it mirrors the toxic, insecure selflessness thats plagued everyone from pearl to jasper to rose about what it means to "deserve" to live it ties into "love like you" of how learning self-love is intertwined with loving others. it ties into how steven can't let go of his hero role until he's confronted by *literally* having his own mind in white's body, hating the idea of being like her yet ironically reacting exactly how she would - "this is someone bad for society, they should be shattered, this is what's best for everyone." trying to hurt her only hurting him. trying to help her helping all of gemkind - from the corrupted gems to dismantling a system that was held up by those exact ideals.
yeah no SU is fantastic. i'm so sad that its reputation is "oh well it wasn't that good, but it had some lgbt+ rep :)" which is just about the most condescending crap ever. i would gladly flip it. i think most cartoons that have come after SU haven't been that interesting, they've just been mostly generic stories with some lgbt+ rep.

Oh how the options have opened up!! :D Prob send a few asks with different prompts with who I'm curious about (as someone who loves college/highschool AUs like this).
1, 4, 6, and 7 for miss January!
1. What was their major?
Undersea Warfare
"A program that focuses on the principles, engineering design and military concepts that govern the operational employment of underwater sensors and weapons systems. Includes instruction in acoustics, electrical, and mechanical engineering; mathematics; meteorology; oceanography; physics; operations analysis; human factors; computer science; and robotics."
4. Did they meet any new friends or start any other significant relationships during university?
I like to think in this universe she met Antoine during an assignment, like that time during college where you can get some job experience, he would be studying marine biology so probably there with a team to help ensure what they're doing won't harm the wildlife. (Lol like the military would care, that's part of the fiction.)
6. What was/is their thesis?
I imagine January would write something about defense against swimmer incursions.  Security methods developed to protect watercraft, ports and installations, and other sensitive resources in or near vulnerable waterways from potential threats or intrusions by swimmers or scuba divers. I have no experience in the field myself so thanks wikipedia lmao
7. What class did they excell in?
Physical oceanography!
Physical oceanographers study the interaction of the ocean with the atmosphere, how the ocean stores and releases heat, the physical properties (or chemical content) of water throughout the ocean, and the formation and movement of currents and coastal dynamics.
One of January's core values when it comes to battle is being aware of your surroundings and using it to your advantage, she understands that the ocean isn't just a theatre for war but a beautiful theatre with a life of it's own. She may not be a super environmentalist but she understands that if you want the upper hand you can't be everyone's enemies, especially not the enemy of nature.
