Leona Info Compilation part 6: Age and NRC

Leona is two years other than (most) other 3rd-year students because he ignored his initial invitation to NRC, having already learned everything the school’s curriculum had to offer through royal tutors.

When Cheka was born, “the idea of staying home was like gnawing on a bone long after the meat had been stripped clean”: his nephew is directly responsible for Leona enrolling in NRC.

Leona has has also been held back a year due to skipping too many classes.

But, Leona says, “the life I’ve got now isn’t so bad” and “maybe coming to Night Raven was the right call." His poor attendance may have actually been a calculated decision for an additional year away from home.

In his second birthday vignette Leona says that he is more comfortable at NRC that at home.

He also has a conversation with Malleus about the pleasure to be found in being alone, as he does not have to worry about making others wait. Malleus teases him about often seeing Savanaclaw students searching for him but Leona insists he is telling the truth: unlike back in his own country, he does not have to worry about the eyes of others always being on him at NRC.

Leona says he also likes being able to wear what he likes in the school, getting to choose his own clothes and accessories, unlike at home. Malleus agrees, saying that they are both able to have experiences at NRC that they could never have in their own countries.

As NRC has nothing new to teach him, Leona is often skipping classes.

It seems he is often getting assigned make-up classes to compensate for his attendance. He says he does show up for tests.

Trapped in a position that will never get any better or any worse no matter what he does, Leona says, “There’s no point in workin’ hard”, as “most of your life’s decided for you from the moment you’re born.”

Leona Info Compilation part 2: Sleeping and Honorifics

Much like Silver, Leona is often falling asleep in different places and seems to have trouble waking up.

Unlike Silver this may be because he is legitimately tired and/or trying to get away from people (in Silver’s case he admits he has a problem that he wants to overcome, but if remaining conscious is a problem for Leona, it is unlikely he would confide in others the way that Silver does).

One of the reasons Leona may be trying to avoid others is because he seems to take a lot of insults from a lot of people who do not know him very well.

We see Leona get insulted to his face by Vil, Crewel, Jamil, Ruggie and Grim during Fairy Gala, as well as Ace during Halloween and Grim (repeatedly) in other vignettes.

The mockery gets so bad in Book 6 that Jamil reflects the other characters go after Leona “like sharks smelling blood in the water,” but later in the story Jamil, too, is teasing Leona for acting dour and being mocked by the others in the first place.

Leona is referred to as “Leona-san” by characters like the other members of his dorm, Azul, Jade and Epel, while characters like Jamil, Jack, Ace and Silver (all younger students) call him “Leona-senpai.”

Riddle shifts between “Leona-senpai” and just “Leona” (with no honorifics) depending on the situation, while Vil and Trey never use honorifics with him at all.

Malleus calls him “Kingscholar” with no honorifics, Crowley calls him “Kingscholar-kun”, Deuce says “Kingscholar-senpai”, Idia uses “Leona-shi”, Cater uses “Leona-kun” and Rook calls him the king of lions (Floyd calls him Sea Lion-senpai).

Leona refers to everyone by their first names with no honorifics.

As covered previously, on NA-server it is common to see Savanaclaw students (including Ruggie) refer to Leona as “boss”, but this only rarely actually happens (and never once in all of Book 2).

The name “Leona” seems to exist in multiple different languages/countries, and it is an actual name in Japan as well! It is gender-neutral and pronounced “Lay-Oh-Nah”.

How is the English version of Twisted Wonderland Different? (Leona)

Original Leona: He sounds just like my brother.

EN Leona: Talkin’ like he’s better than me.

In the original version of the game a significant part of Leona's issues come from his family, but this was changed in the English adaptation.

Falena is referenced a second time in Book 2 where Leona accuses Riddle of sounding like his brother directly before he overblots.

This line was taken out of EN.

Several insults were added for the English-speaking audience, including this line from Fairy Gala where Leona calls the fairies "stupid."

Original Leona: After all, you're not like me.

EN Leona: After all, I'm not like you.

Leona isn't insulting Jamil in this sentence; he is encouraging him.

Original Leona: I’m the hated second-born prince who won’t ever be king!

EN Leona: I’m a secondborn prince who won’t ever be king!

(An important point that is also heavily emphasized in the manga. It is possible that being secondborn itself might not actually be that big of an issue for Leona: his struggle is that he is hated for it back home, despite how it is not his fault and there is nothing he can do about it.)

Leona Info Compilation part 4: Ruggie (pt2)

Leona has a history of hiding things about himself from others: post-overblot he tries to play off his own injuries, saying that he “wouldn’t even need to be awake to handle this sorry pack of wounded herbivores” when Trey challenges him to join the Spelldrive tournament and “If you want my apology, come and take it”, only for it to be immediately revealed that he is, in fact, in crippling pain.

While Ace notices this about Leona during Halloween (“You know, you talk like you don’t care, but…you actually look out for your people, don't you"), it is Ruggie who is usually able to read between the lines with Leona, such as when Leona tries to downplay his support of his dormmates (“Can’t you just admit you wanna do something nice?”) and downplay his concern for Jack (“Would it kill you to be honest with the guy and tell him you were worried?”).

Ruggie suspects Leona of having a soft spot for Jack, Grim and the prefect in book 3.

Jamil also seems to suspect that Leona will blatantly lie in order to deflect from his true feelings, such as when he claims he is not worried about Grim in Book 6, while Jamil seems unconvinced.

This is likely what made it all the more shocking for Ruggie when Leona over blotted during Book 3, saying, “You’re a hyena who grew up in a dump and I’m the hated secondborn prince who will never be king! And there is NO turning that around!” (Leona saying he is “hated” was removed from NA), as Ruggie had never suspected that Leona had doubts about their plans to “turn the world upside down” (“Have you always felt this way? All this time…?”)

Leona very nearly kills Ruggie—the one person who never abandoned him, as Jack acknowledges later on—and the incident ends with Ruggie telling Leona that, while he has not earned his forgiveness, it pains him to see the pathetic look on Leona’s face and using his unique magic on Leona to make him smile.

Despite their violent history together Ruggie never seems intimidated by Leona and is more than happy to mock him to his face:

We see Ruggie dragging Leona out of bed feet-first in Book 3, immediately after the overblot incident, and even insinuate that he is looking to steal from Leona in the same arc.

Ruggie also seems to try and steal from Leona outright during Vargas Camp, being evasive about a certain missing necklace that he claims he was just holding onto (after Sebek calls him out on it).

Ruggie teases Leona about being on the farmer team for Beanfest (“I can only assume that the notion of being prey offense his ion pride…Whoopsie, heard that, didja?”) and tells Leona to keep his mouth shut multiple times (Leona counters in kind).

He also teases Leona by claiming to have bought him cat food, tells him he looks cute in Malleus’ ceremonial robes and tries to use Leona as a decoy in order to get out of having to deal with visitors during Halloween (Leona catches on too quickly for Ruggie to manage it, leaving Ruggie to deal with the visitors himself).

In Phantom Bride Ruggie refuses to go to Leona and Jack’s aid, saying that “Leona will find his way back on his own” (and not mentioning what he thinks may happen to Jack ww).

Ruggie also lets Vil, Cater and Rook into Leona’s bedroom during Fairy Gala rather than support him in shirking his responsibilities, and he even pressures Leona into allowing Grim and the player character to stay in Leona’s bedroom during Book 3 by referencing the potion he drank to boost his magic for Leona’s plan (While Ruggie does say “I busted my tail for you,” neither character directly references the interpersonal violence of Book 2.)

Leona Info Compilation part 13: Appearance, Spelldrive and Chess

Leona is canonically attractive. Halloween visitors describe him as “so pretty” and “like a statue”, while the attendees at Fairy Gala mistake him for “a fairy of renown” due to his “rugged yet beautiful movement”, saying, “I wish I could be one of the stray locks adorning his face.”

Idia also says that both Leona and Malleus’ faces “are mega-striking”, while Vil is constantly commenting on how attractive (and aggravating) he finds Leona to be.

Leona is—according to Cater—a “Spelldrive legend”, and during Halloween we see a campus guest recognize him not as a prince, but as an athlete she saw during a televised Spelldrive tournament.

Jack says that Leona’s Spelldrive prowess is the entire reason why he enrolled in NRC at all, and despite Leona’s lackadaisical reputation we see that he is an accomplished member of the school’s Spelldrive team.

Ruggie says that he has “ridiculous magic reserves” and his stamina is “nuts” after Leona takes on five members of the Spelldrive club simultaneously for 30 minutes and never once loses the disc, which he refers to as “a warm up.”

While Jack is also an extremely capable Spelldrive athlete (capable of winning matches against older students, much to their displeasure), Jack says he loses to Leona in Spelldrive despite being physically stronger, which he finds frustrating.

When asked if he has a hobby Leona says, “If I had to name something, it’d be chess.” Leona says that he enjoys studying chess boards and getting an idea of what is going on in his opponent’s head by examining their strategies. He used to play a lot of chess when he was a child, “and against big, important grown-ups, too,” who wouldn’t take him seriously, and they would “get all flustered by the end.”

Leona will occasionally refer to chess in conversation, and we learn that he plays chess alone in the botanical gardens, as he hasn’t anyone to play against.

For Idia’s birthday Leona gives him a hand-crafted chess set from his hometown (he says he received it as a gift from his family and never used it, so he thought he would give it to Idia for use in the boardgame club), and the two stop the interview halfway through in order to play against one another.

It is never revealed who, if anyone, won the game.

Leona says that Savanaclaw students will challenge him to chess games on his birthday “like it’s some kinda birthday treat”, but it seems “they barely even know the rules.”

Leona says he has also "poked at" the chess game on his computer.

Leona Info Compilation part 5: Ruggie (pt3)

We see Leona employ Ruggie in a variety of roles such as protecting him during Beanfest (for a “daily special” from the cafeteria every day for a week), taking on his assignments during Vargas Camp (for a shopping trip that Ruggie took with Leona’s money) and recruit new students for the spell drive club (for doughnuts).

The task Ruggie dislikes the most might be having to pick up Leona’s room and do laundry, which we hear him complain about fairly often, but Leona pays for washing Ruggie’s clothes along with his own.

Ruggie seems to be uncomfortable with receiving charity—when Silver offers to lend him money, Ruggie refuses—which is possibly why Leona is always having to find roundabout ways to support Ruggie financially.

Since Ruggie will not accept money unless he feels like he is getting away with something Leona does things like give Ruggie both his wallet and his permission to buy whatever it is he wants in exchange for standing in line at the school store.

If it weren’t for the appearance of a monster that they needed magic in order to fight off, it is likely that Leona had been intending to let Ruggie smuggle a magestone out of the mines to sell, as well.

In a vignette we see Ruggie talking to himself about wishing he could afford to eat more when Leona suddenly appears behind him.

We do not know how much Leona overheard, but when Ruggie says he needs money to buy detergent for washing Leona’s clothes, Leona tosses him his wallet and tell him to take what he needs and keep the change.

Ruggie points that out he has nothing but large bills and Leona responds, “Why’re you getting all hung up on the details?"

Ruggie reflects that Leona probably wouldn’t even notice if he kept more in change than what the detergent costs, saying, “far be it from me to look a gift horse in the mouth, though. Cha-ching!”, seemingly unaware that that is likely Leona’s exact intent.

Ruggie charges Leona “at least ten thaumarks an hour” in exchange for his help during Fairy Gala (we never see Leona haggle with Ruggie to try and underpay him; Leona always goes along with whatever price Ruggie dictates), and Ruggie seems free to refuse tasks he does not like, such as passing on messages to Malleus.

When Jamil comments that serving Leona seems “far more painful” than serving Kalim, Ruggie says that serving Kalim would just make him uncomfortable, and there is “a lid for every pot.”

Ruggie himself explains that while Leona is used to ordering people around and is a demanding boss, he is always giving things to Ruggie for him to sell.

Leona also helps with Ruggie’s education, as Night Raven College is Ruggie’s first time attending a school.

Ruggie says that Leona tutors him on lessons he does not understand and provides him with reference books and old exams, as well as “tons of useful advice”, directly resulting in a significant increase in Ruggie’s grades from “bottom of the ladder” to “somewhere just below the middle”.

In addition to never arguing with Ruggie about money Leona seems to follow his demands in other areas as well, such as not skipping classes that Ruggie insists he must attend and reluctantly eating vegetables that Ruggie puts on his plate for lunch.

Leona does not seem to like the food at the school cafeteria (calling the steaks “cheap” in Book 6) which makes sense, as he is a prince, and he is one of the strictest judges in Culinary Crucible (on par with Vil), grading meals with a 4 that Ruggie grades as 8.

However, Ruggie has a voice lines saying, “When it comes to cooking, all I can do it throw together whatever’s on hand, but it seems like Leona doesn’t care as long as it’s edible.”

This seems to insinuate that Leona either just prefers Ruggie’s cooking in particular, or at the very least he refuses to complain about it.

Leona Info Compilation Part 1: Family

Leona says that he receives messages and “a whole heap of presents” from his family on his birthday, but offers to give them away unopened as “it’s probably nothing I want anyway.”

Leona says that the birthday present he received from his five-year-old nephew Cheka was the real trouble, as Cheka was constantly calling him on the phone to ask him about it, so Leona hung up on him.

He refuses to open the gift until Cheka’s mother calls to insist (It is occasionally referenced that Leona has more respect for women than men).

Leona says that Cheka’s gifts are “dumb, sweet presents”, like a stuffed animal and a picture book. Leona’s pet peeve is listed as “dealing with kids”, but like most things that Leona claims about himself in order to keep people away, we cannot be sure how true this is.

Leona says that his older brother, sister-in-law and Cheka “were always making some kind of racket” so he “never got a moment’s peace” at home.

Falena is 30 years old and Leona says he has been running the kingdom since their dad became bedridden with an unspecified illness. Leona expresses frustration that Falena seems more hung up on looking after him than looking after their country, recently sending Leona an expensive traditional rug for his dorm room.

Leona says, “In the time he spends sending me gifts I don’t even want, he could be sending rugs to neighboring lands and bolstering our foreign relations. With that carefree attitude of his, he’s gonna run our kingdom into the ground.”

Leona seems to have affection for his country, and being forced to watch Falena’s questionable leadership from a position he cannot escape seems to be a large part of his issues. Leona’s birthday is not the only time that Cheka spends an entire day calling him on his phone: we learn that Cheka calls Leona all day on Halloween as well (with express permission from Falena), specifically in order to wish him happy halloween.

Leona cuts their call short, but not before telling Cheka “Happy Halloween” in response. He then immediately leaves the school’s party.

We meet Cheka in person in Book 2 after the Spelldrive tournament that Savanaclaw loses to Diasomnia for the third year in a row. Cheka climbs on top of the injured Leona’s stomach in what Jack describes as “riding Housewarden Leona like a horse”, while Ruggie says “So THIS is why you never want to go home to visit your family”, insinuating that Leona had intentionally not been telling anyone about his nephew. Leona says that he has to “do enough babysitting at home” so he does not like having to do it at school as well.

Leona Info Compilation part 7: Unique Magic and Power

When Leona’s unique magic is first seen Jack says, “Everything the Housewarden touched is turning to sand”, but Leona may not need to touch something to disintegrate it (as seen in Halloween and Book 6).

Leona’s “King’s Roar” is the only unique magic (thus far) that is the same in verbal command, hidden meaning and the English adaptation.

We do not see Leona attempt to use his unique magic on the Charon (wearing anti-magic armor) who kidnap him in Book 6 or the anti-magic doors inside of STYX, though he says he would “turn ‘em to sand” otherwise.

King’s Roar might be difficult to aim: he says that STYX’s researchers being in the way during the fight against an over-blotted Idia would have made his unique magic “a lot harder to use,” but since they were gone he was able to “sand most of the minions in the area” without issue. He refuses to use the spell on the cages in Tartarus as doing so would run the risk of sanding Grim, and/or the ID card that they needed in order to continue.

We have yet to really see the extent of what Leona is capable of, though Grim says “for as lazy as that guy is…he seemed insanely strong.”

Jack says that Leona’s “magical might” is “in a league of its own”, and Leona is the only person we’ve seen capable of defending against Riddle’s unique magic. (Despite being, objectively, one of the most powerful students in the school, Leona says “power alone ain’t enough to make waves in this world”, in reference to how he will never fulfill his only dream no matter how strong he is. Unaware of Leona’s inner turmoil Jack comments, “How can someone so powerful give up on everything?”)

Jack is often commenting on Leona’s magical strength saying that “Leona’s magic is way more powerful than any of ours” while he, Ruggie and Floyd battle the mine monster with Leona teasing Ruggie about getting tired out.

Idia explains that Leona likely received “top-notch magic instruction as a kid”, saying that Leona’s “casting speed’s off the charts, and his magic pool is huge. He also knows how to be efficient he tailors his defense spells to match the potency of enemy attacks. He hardly wastes any magic at all. Which means he barely accumulates any excess blot.”

Ortho follows with, “Because he typically exhibits great mental fortitude…when he does experience intense emotions it could cause a drastic spike in blot accumulation.”

Leona might be particularly adept at defensive magic, saying, “I aced my protective magic classes in my sleep”, which makes the two instances that Ruggie is able to apply his unique magic to Leona (in Book 2 and during Halloween) very interesting.

Leona can defend against Riddle, who is probably stronger than Ruggie. So it can be assumed that the times that Ruggie successfully used “Laugh with Me” on Leona were only possible because Leona consciously allowed it.

We get a rare chance to compare Leona’s strength to that of the other students directly in Book 6:

Both Vil and Riddle are unable to lift, aim and utilize their thunder spears simultaneously on their own, with Vil asking for help from Epel the player and Rook, while Riddle asks for help from Azul. Leona, however, both lifts and aim the spear alone, then even uses its magic without any help from Jamil (who we see attacking the Titan independently with his fire magic, away from the spear).

Jamil is surprised by Leona’s ability to sleep after the first titan fights, but we learn Riddle also took a nap at that same time.

Vil again gets help from Epel and Rook (and presumably the player) during the second titan fight, saying he “can’t move another step” while he and Epel fall asleep almost instantly after reaching a safe location (Rook possibly remained awake).

Riddle also gets help from Azul for their second titan fight, getting injured in the process and expressing concern over his magic, stamina and blot.

Azul falls asleep quickly afterwards, despite previously claiming that, as an octopus, he could never sleep in such a situation.

For their second titan fight Leona, again, uses the thunder spear entirely on his own without help from Jamil, collapsing to his knees from exhaustion.
