M'Lynn (Sally Field) is the mother of bride-to-be Shelby Eatenton (Julia Roberts), and as friend Truvy Jones (Dolly Parton) fixes the women's hair for the ceremony, they welcome a helping hand from aspiring beautician Annelle Dupuy Desoto (Daryl Hannah). Diabetic Shelby has a health scare, which is averted but doesn't bode well for her hopes of having children. Time passes, and the women and their friends encounter tragedy and good fortune, growing stronger and closer in the process.

You’re just full of surprises! I’m so glad you let down that harsh exterior and have let yourself calm down. I’m glad Owen us by your side, for your tomatoes, and flowers, and Rhett’s sake’s too.

Miss Ouiser, I am proud that you have brought attention to your faith and no longer feel like you have to hide. I don’t know if that’s because of Owen or Shelby’s passing or just because God decided it to be so, but in any way--I’m still so happy.

I would ask you to consider going to Camp Crossroads, but I’ll just pray that you keep praying.

I know you can’t bear to hear Jack Jr. or Shelby cry and that might be because of who they remind you of, but Shelby wouldn’t want us to get mired down. And they’re babies--they do that.

I know you carry a lot of regret--maybe even shame--but there is no shame in praying to God because you don’t know what else to do.

Truvy Jones-Steel Magnolias Another production where I pretty much love every single character, but I’ll start with Dolly Parton’s Truvy Jones because she was so sweet and wonderful and FUNNY in this flick. I love Dolly anyway-her down home humor and willingness to poke fun at herself is fabulous, and as Truvy she provided pearls of wisdom throughout the flick. She never lost her temper in her gentle battle to get her husband Spud to get up and do...anything, and she provided running commentary on the activities of her close friends and her lovely southern town. My favorite is when she’s telling Annelle about her new landlady: “Ruth Robeline-now there’s a story. She’s a twisted, troubled soul. Her life has been an experiment in terror.” But she also has tons of good lines about beauty, and life.
