My top villains (from dumb to smart)
Warning: This post is not intended to offend anyone, the author is just sharing his observations
In this post, I decided to make up the top villains of trollhunters from the dumbest to the smartest (as for me, such tops are much more interesting than the placement of characters by strength, because in most cases you already know who will be in first place). The actions of villains from trollhunters only will be evaluated here.
10) Morgana:
Tumblr media
Her main problem is that she does using her arsenal of spells on maximum and instead of attacking with shots of magical energy from a safe distance, she creates small energy daggers and goes into close combat, although this makes no sense (it is as if gunmar, fighting with his sword, tried not to hit the opponent with a sharp blade, but tried to hit him with the hilt of the sword). Her second fatal mistake is that she gave Angor freedom and was genuinely surprised when he betrayed her and decided to take revenge for everything she did to him (What prevented her from taking Angor's soul again so that he would not betray her at the most crucial moment?). And can someone explain to me why she didn't kill Merlin at the end of the third season? That is, she just tossed him from side to side, throughout the series she said how she wanted to kill him, and then just left him alive and went to deal with the hunter?
9) Otto:
Tumblr media
For some reason, he sincerely believed that Gunmar cared about changelings and that Gunmar would lead them to a bright future. But what a surprise! It turns out Gunmar didn't care about changelings from the beginning, well, yes, he never hid his disdain for them. Someone will call it loyalty, but for me it's dibilism when you betray the current head of the Order of Janus and instead of taking the vacant throne yourself, you kindly waited for the tyrant who eventually used you.
8) Bular:
Tumblr media
As for me, Bular is one of the most impulsive characters in the whole series. The most striking example is when in the second series, literally in the middle of the day, in a place where there could be unwanted witnesses, he decided to attack a new hunter and, as expected, was defeated. He also continues to underestimate his opponent, even when Jim killed stalking, it is not surprising that with such disregard for the enemy, he died before all the antagonists.
7) Goblin from the episode about creepslayerz:
Tumblr media
He appeared relatively little on the screen compared to other villains, but during this time he, firstly, set Steve and Eli on Jim, and secondly, led the Creepslayerz on a false trail, thereby preventing them from finding out about their plans ahead of time.
6) Gunmar:
Tumblr media
My main problem with Gunmar is that without asking for any proof, he believed all the nonsense that the Dictatus told him. I also think that Gunmar should be aware of the technical superiority of people (at least from Strickler's presentation) and that is why, instead of sending changelings to intercept at least a couple of warheads, he arranges their genocide. It's really funny that in the end Morgana needed a changeling to free him, and I'm just wondering what he would have done if Nomura and Strickler hadn't been in town? (I think he would catch a random person on the street and give him free troll language lessons)
5) Nomura:
Tumblr media
She doesn't rank higher in the rankings just because she underestimated Jim in the first season. To be honest, I can't remember if she has had similar mistakes before, and compared to previous places, she is much less impulsive.
4) Angor:
Tumblr media
As for me, Angor from the first season is a reference villain, almost all of whose actions are thoughtful and balanced decisions, for example, he reasonably did not trust Strickler and his promise that he would let him go as soon as trollhunter will die, so he did not immediately kill Jim, but only intimidated him so that our troll hunter had more reasons to make a deal with Angor and steal infernacopula. Well, the most striking example is that Angor will first study his enemy, and only then go into battle. if they hadn't made a cartoon villain out of him at the end of the first season, who, instead of immediately stabbing his defeated opponent, rolls up a long monologue about how weak our new hunter is without his friends, then in this top you Angor would have stood much higher (but despite this, he is still one of my favorite characters).
3) Usurna:
Tumblr media
You might reasonably ask why she stands so high in the top if she supported Gunmar on an equal footing with Otto? To which I will answer that unlike Otto, who was looking forward to the return of the cruel lord, Usurna tried her best not to let Gunmar escape from the dark lands and joined him only when she knew for sure that he had returned, in fact, she simply chose the strongest, and therefore the winning side. And I think it's worth admitting that no matter how mean a bitch she is, she can reasonably reason that by sacrificing a pair of cubs of Kruber, she will thereby delay Gunmar's desire to attack her people for a sufficiently long time, and if the dark lord still falls, she can say that her children were simply kidnapped (which was common at that time (if we recall the background of the creation of changelings) so no matter how you look at it, in any case, it remains a winner.
2) Strickler:
Tumblr media
(who could doubt that he would be so high in the ranking) I am still sure that he helped in the liberation of Gunmar only out of fear of Bular, because as soon as Bular fell, Strickler immediately took the vacant throne, leaving Gunmar in the dark lands. Strickler, as well as Angor, will not be the first to rush into battle, he will most likely just shift all the dangerous and dirty work to someone else, since the status allows. Also, he always plans an escape plan if something goes wrong, if he hadn't created a magical connection with Barbara then he wouldn't have had any leverage on Jim and therefore the hunter wouldn't have had any reason to protect Strickler from Angor. He is not in the first place only because instead of hiring a hired sniper who would quickly kill a young hunter and left, no! instead, he awakens an ancient killer who, if he can take the ring, will kill his unfortunate master first thing. Although if he also awakened Angor in order to strengthen his status as the head of the Order, then there are no complaints, but due to the fact that in the series itself Strickler said that he brought Angor only to kill Jim, then alas it was too unjustified a risk
1) Dictatious:
Tumblr media
To begin with, he was able to survive in the dark lands for several centuries, so he was also able to become the right hand of Gunmar himself, who clearly respects only the strong, and the Dictatus, to put it mildly, is a so-so warrior. Further, after the Dictatus lost his sight and became virtually useless to Gunmar, he was still able to remain his most trusted subordinate (yes, this whole topic with Morgan's visions looks ridiculous to me, given that the Dictatus had no evidence of the truthfulness of his words, but most importantly, it worked). Also, the Dictatus has never had an insane devotion to Gunmar, he joined him only because otherwise he would not have survived, which is why he so easily switches to the side of the hunter and at the end of the series remains to chill in Toby's house.

Trollhunter!Nomura AU (part 1)
Tumblr media
This AU was made by me and @elegantjellyfishwerewolf (check her account to find more information about it).
Now I want to tell you the beginning of this story.
At this AU Strickler begin to date Barbara two months before the main events. Their relationship got started because of Jim's lack of sleep and lateness at school. As a result, Strickler and Barbara become very close to each other and Jim Jim begins to subconsciously perceive Strickler as his father.
//two months later//
After Kanjigar’s death Strickler gives an order to Nomura to check the canal and take the amulet before it will choose another trollhunter. As Nomura came to the canal the amulet calls out her name and she realizes that it’s not good to her. Because of fear that Bular and Janus Order will kill her as soon as she would open the bridge, she doesn’t go to Strickler.
Instead of it Nomura goes to hide in her apartments where Blinky and Aargh visit her and say that she is new trollhunter now. They quickly understand that she is changeling, Nomura runs from them at the panic and trolls go chasing her. At the same time Toby goes out from dentist and notices three running creatures at twilight. He feels a bit scared but at the same time curious and decides to follow them on a bike. After a “jogging” trolls and changeling come to a temporary truce because Blinky and Aargh realize that Nomura isn’t interested at opening the bridge and Nomura doesn’t see aggression towards herself in their behavior. Toby hears their entire conversation, but reveals his presence with some noise. Nomura notices him and is going to kill him as witness, but Blinky stops her from that and they let Domzalski go on the condition that he does not tell anyone what he saw.
At the same time at the Lake house Strickler proposed to Barbara to get married at dinner and she accepts it. Some later at the same evening he gets an information from goblins that the new trollhuner is Nomura now and it makes him nervous because she knows EVERYTHING about their plans. He sends an urgent order to send NotEnrique on the surface to replace by him Nomura’s place and go by himself to get Angor Rot from his prison because he isn’t sure in Bular’s powers. He wants to destroy the new trollhunter as soon as possible.Strickler brings Angor to Arcadia the very next day. As in canon, Angor doesn’t trust to changeling words that his soul will be free again and preparing a trap to him. At some critical moment Strickler barks at his slave saying something like “Do anything!” and at the next moment Angor cuts off part of left hand on which he was wearing Inferno Copula. Angor takes back his soul but let Strickler go.
Walter gets to the hospital and Barbara is very shocked at the way he looks like. After an attempt was made on Strickler's life while he was in the ward, the fact is that the Order of Janus, specifically Otto, found out about Walt's offer about marriage and decided that their leader had softened. There is an explosion in the hospital as a result of which Strickler survives, but Barbara....does not. At this time Angor decides to redeem himself and therefore comes to the Trollmarket to take on the duties of an absent trollhunter. At first, trolls don’t trust him and a bit afraid of killer, but Vendel because of rumors that the new trollhunter might be a human or changeling decides to accept Angor’s proposal. Draal initially perceives this decision of the elder negatively and challenges Angor to a duel during which he loses (the fight was not public, so Draal did not lose his honor), but Angor decides not to kill him and so they both begin to respond to the calls that were intended for the hunter.
While Nomura moves from her apartments to motel, Strickler replaces the missing part of his arm with a prosthesis (a metal prosthesis with hidden golden claws) and finds out who organized the attempt on him (it was Otto). He comes to the Order of Janus and demonstratively kills Otto (who has already managed to proclaim himself the new head) in front of other changelings, as if saying that he should not be discounted. The changelings recognize Strickler's power and he becomes the leader of the order again.
Enrique is substituted, but NotEnrique verysoon reveals his essence to Claire and she threatens the changeling and asks him to take her to her brother, but Neenrique decides to bring her to the entrance to the Trollmarket in the hope that by penetrating there she will be eaten and he will get rid of the witness. Claire enters the Trollmarket and getting found by Angor. Nunez, impressed by the magic of Angor Rot, asks him to start training her to prepare before going to the Darklands and saving her brother. Angor initially refuses, but Claire is too persistent and determined in her desire to save her brother, so Angor reluctantly agrees, hoping that she will leave after a couple of grueling training sessions or die in the course of training.Nomura understands that the influence of Janus order is growing and it would be better for her to go to Trollmarket, but she also understands that the trolls most likely will not accept her until she proves that she can be trusted. Therefore, she, along with Blinky, Aaarrgh and Toby, who has followed them, come up with a plan to kill Bular. Everything is going according to plan and Nomura, along with Bular's head, goes to the troll market to finally take her place as a trollhunter.

Conversation
Strickler: The doctor says I only have 4 days to live.
Otto: You're sick?
Strickler: No; as it turns out Barbara is really mad at me for how I drugged her drink and tried to kill her son.
Barbara, in the distance: I'M GONNA FUCK YOU UP ON TUESDAY!

AU idea for trollhunter
Otto found an abandoned Toby or Jim: When they were really small, he decided to keep them and raise them under his guidance, but one day Strickler tells Otto that he needs to return the toddler back to their respective parents, but Auto really doesn't. He had grown fawn about photographers, but Strickler forced his hand by threatening to tell Bular about the human child. He was taken care of. So he does return them, but he leaves them with a goblin. It looks like a stuffed animal, but it actually isn't; it's alive, and it watches over them and reports back to Otto once Jim becomes the troll hunter and Toby starts helping him with different roots, depending on which one you guys want to hear first. The goblin reports back to Otto about this, and he grows concerned since a human trollhunter against Gunmar would most likely lead to death in his eyes. So when Stickler betrayed the Jance order, he purposely followed Strickler back to the school and decided to apply for the now open teaching position of the history teacher, but under a different appearance and name, so he could keep a better eye on the child that he began to love as if they were his own.

Remember, this is just an idea, like a concept, and I'm still getting the hang of it.

Jim looked back when he heard Douxie cry out. His eyes widened and his stomach dropped when Douxie fell to the ground, shoulder bleeding.
A changeling Otto leapt back, the sharp end of his tail covered in blood. Douxie’s blood.
Jim saw red. He let out a guttural yell and swung Excalibur in a wide arc to keep back the masses of enemies, standing over Douxie protectively. "Nobody touches him!"

Something about changelings? Like headcanon about their nature, their past in the dark lands and how they feel now that they are on earth?
I don't know, it could be interesting!
Headcanons you say about changelings? I have a few!
The creation of changelings happened long before Camelot. Morgana had been dabbling in dark magic to create her changelings for ages before she found the best formula. A formula that was later twisted by Gunmar to give us the changelings we are accustomed to.
Most changelings, due to the way in which they are raised, have naturally distrustful dispositions and are wary about anything given for free. This comes from the way they are tested in the Darklands. Since they're alone, left to fend for themselves and even made to fight each other by Gumm-Gumm’s who trap them, until they are bonded to a familiar their lives are in constant danger.
Getting out to earth is for the most part a relief. Away from the dark, hidden from trolls and as long as they're human, part of a world in which they are not hated. At the same time, one wrong move and they could still end up dead.
Also I headcanon that the process that makes a whelp into a changeling fundamentally changes their biology. In this I mean they have five fingers and glowing eyes, they are naturally smaller and scrawnier than trolls, and they have a human like heart, so they bleed similar to humans. Most changelings have thinner stone skin too, although it's usually smoother than a trolls.
And my personal favourite headcanon :Strickler, Nomura and Otto were nest mates in the Darklands and retained their bond even after they were all on the surface.

Another trip to the Demon Realm with the Changling Families!
All three changelings are “hidden wilds”. Wild witches hiding among the covens like Eda’s parents. All of their outfits are the coven uniforms for their respective covens and are, more or less, modeled off of what we see the coven heads wearing. Headcanon time! All of the coven heads wear a stylized version of the coven’s uniform. Then the general members of the coven have set variations they can wear.
Tumblr media
Nomura pretends to be an Abomination Witch and works at the museum with Lilith and Hooty. Later, after the fall of Belos, she still works there as Lilith’s assistant curator! I based her uniform off what we see Darius wear. She opts to wear the pencil skirt since she usually wears the skirt in her human form.
Tumblr media
Otto hides in the Bard Coven. His is the same as Katya and Derwin’s in the show since Amber’s is more stylized. This is the only coven uniform we actually get to see in canon. Also, I forgot how fast I can draw Otto until I did this picture.
Tumblr media
Walt pretends to be in the Potions Coven. I modeled his uniform off a combination of Vitmer’s and Morton’s Vitmer is the Potion’s coven head and is a bipedal demon but not exactly humanoid so I had to alter it to work for Walt. Morton is lower ranked in the coven than Walt so I only really kept the bandana for a mask and the color of his clothes for some of Walt’s

So, I have just been informed that Tom Kenny, the voice of Otto Scaarbach, is going to be at my comic con…I can’t decide if I should draw a new Otto piece for him to sign or just bring a screen shot because I do not have the confidence that there is going to be a photo of Otto to choose from.

This week's storyboard sequence is a very different moment from the Trollhunters episode Grand Theft Otto. How about some Jim action by Daniel Lafrance? This has his original pitch which is pretty unusual!
If you fullview the video it's one of those players that needs to have no movement for 30 seconds before the pause icon disappears just as a heads up.

Was Jim ever compared to a Changeling Polymorph like Otto? Could Otto potentially change into aliens too? Or is it just humans and trolls?
On multiple occasions he is until he showed his powers. Otto can mimic their appearances but not any of Jim's alien powers. Also forms like Heatblast or Goop are impossible to copy as pure element mimicry can be very harmful. The best thing Otto can do with this is study the forms accessible to him.

I wish you would write a fic where an unfortunate series of events requires Uncle Otto and Aunt Nomura to babysit the Stricklake kids. And maybe teach them baby crimes as required by a whole separate set of shenanigans
(i think this fits into the only constant universe quite nicely if we ignore the fact that otto is dead in that story + it’s easier to use my stricklake baby’s names vs ‘the big one’ or ‘the little one’ or ‘the little smartass who acts far too much like his stuck up father’)
there’s a wedding. barbara and strickler must attend it. not because they really care for the people getting married, but because it’s being held on a beach in cabo at some super swanky adults only resort whose website is plastered with pictures of the most gorgeous sunsets they’ve ever seen and they haven’t been on a vacation in years - they deserve this damnit
this means they need to find someone to watch the kids for a few days
unfortunately, the responsible adults are all busy that weekend. ophelia’s parents are in town, jim and blinky are heading to vancouver to discuss trade agreements with a clan of forest trolls, claire has a retreat scheduled with her coven, and toby has finals to study for. even steve, and lawrence by extension, will be out of town for some football coaches convention
which leaves the last two people on earth (because they reached out to aja and eli on akiridion 5, too) - otto and nomura
it takes some blackmail and briberyfinessing on strickler’s part to get them to commit but he eventually talks them into it. nomura needs to be in town for some meeting with ‘investors’ anyway, and otto’s got some sort of stake in her business venture so he doesn’t mind tagging along
“the children are five and seven,” the poor, delusional polymorph thinks with a shrug when the three-way facetime call ends. “how hard can it be?”
well...
DAY 1/3
this isn’t the first time nomura and/or otto have watched the kids. in fact, they’ve spent a lot of time with strickler’s spawn. nomura is rory’s idol. and otto’s not too weird, they guess. but that doesn’t mean either changeling is particularly equipped to care for two small children for a whole weekend
case in point - nomura knows walker likes pepperoni on his pizza. she’s watched the kid inhale three pieces within five minutes. it’s a well-known fact. except, it isn’t anymore because the second she sets a slice in front of him he turns up his little nose and tells her he’s allergic to pepperonis now. he’ll have sausage, thank you very much
they blatantly cheat at board games
and they won’t allow anything on the tv that’s not animated even though both are watching youtube videos of people watching youtube videos on their tablets
and how many snacks do these kids need?! they just ate a whole pizza!
and while neither have ever had a problem putting rory down for a nap before, bedtime is apparently sacred in the strickler-lake household these days because the little girl loses her shit when she realizes her father isn’t there to read her a story. she really goes off the deep-end when otto tries to impersonate him and just “I WANT MY REAL DADDY RIGHT NOW”
strickler is so fucking smug about it the next day
DAY 2/3
nomura is awoken at the ass crack of dawn by a wired walker jumping on her bed. from the sound of otto’s muffled squeals of terror, rory is doing the same in the room next door
both kids have already polished off a couple bags of chips but want doughnuts, too. otto jumps at the opportunity to get out of the house, leaving nomura to clean up the gallon of milk spiled all over the floor after rory swore her parents let her pour it herself (they don’t)
they go to the park. it ends in tears
they go out to lunch. it ends in tears
they go to a movie. it ends in tears. otto’s, this time. because the hit to his bank account is astronomical
by the time they get back to the house, nomura and otto are exhausted - the kids aren’t - and otto wakes up from his little nap on the couch an hour later with a frowny face drawn on his forehead. they used permanent marker
at four, they all head to the some warehouse for nomura’s meeting. which is when things really get interesting
because *magical artifacts*. that’s what the investors are interested in. small ones. the size of a marble, maybe smaller. just big enough to fit in a five year old’s nose. which is exactly where it goes when otto tries to head-off a tantrum in the car by letting rory look at the pretty colors the jewel casts. obviously, it gets stuck
otto, in horror: “oh no”
nomura, eyeing him in the rear view mirror: “what? otto? otto, what? otto! what’s the ‘oh no’ for?!”
they don’t take her to the hospital because barb will definitely find out if they do, and neither changeling is too keen on getting something stuffed up their noses in retaliation for not stopping strickler’s spawn from doing it in the first place. they’ll just explain the situation to their clients and ask for a little more time until they can find a solution to the problem
except these are not fine, upstanding citizens they’re working with and the only viable solution they can see is to (pick your favorite villain accent): “just cut off her nose”
which, no
at some point during the conversation, otto notices walker has managed to disappear from his side. so that’s fun
the polymorph quietly excuses himself to go search high and low for the little runaway. he finds him ten minutes later when the little shite jumps out from behind a pile of crates and scares the ever-living bejeezus out of him
walker, having recognized the look on otto’s face as the one his father wears when rory tattles on him for pinching or kicking or trying to give her a swirly, whispers a panicked “oh frick” and, understandably, books it
meanwhile, nomura and rory have been stuffed into an old, unused office as the bad guys argue just outside the door. nomura’s contemplating her next move when rory holds up a bobby pin and grins: “don’t worry nom-noms. i got this”
(turns out she taught herself how to pick locks months ago in order to break into her brother’s bedroom, hack his tablet, and subtlety sabotage his minecraft game on a daily basis)
now, two things happen at once - 1. nomura kicks the office door open, and 2. walker accidentally smashes full speed into one of the men holding them captive. something incriminating goes flying out of the pockets of one of the henchmen as walker, then otto, falls on top of them. there’s a moment where time seems to freeze, and then the main client growls at the henchman: “really, scott? i thought our daughters were friends”
police sirens can suddenly be heard in the distance
nomura pushes the kids forward and out, ignoring otto’s panicked little screeches as they hurry into the car they left parked around the corner
walker: “step on it!”
rory: “on the double, man!”
it’s all very nostalgic for nomura and otto (that exact phrasing, specifically) but there’s no time for reminiscing as they speed away from the warehouse
the second they walk into the house, the adults are just. done. and otto’s like: “well that was fun but i think i’ll go to bed now”
rory: “it’s seven o’clock. the sun’s still up”
nomura: “are you two… ok? with everything that just happened? you’re good?”
walker shoots her an incredulous look: “uh, yeah! that was so cool! like we were in a movie or something! i took down a bad guy all by myself!”
nomura: “pretty sure you blew detective scott’s cover, but ok. i’m happy you’re not traumatized”
rory: “you’re the best babysitters ever”
DAY 3/3
the next morning starts the same as the day before but with the addition of nerf guns and ten times the excitement. nomura and otto literally count down the hours until strickler and barbara return, even going so far as to track their plane
oh shit. they forgot about the magical marble thing still stuck in rory’s nose. now they’re really counting down the hours because “we have to get this thing out of her nose or barb’s going to kill us!”
(they’re not nearly as afraid of strickler)
but nothing works, and as the car pulls into the driveway nomura and otto are furiously playing rounds of rock-paper-scissor to determine who has to tell the parents about their little misadventure when rory sneezes and the damn thing pops out easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy
nomura and otto are both: “really, kid”
anyway
they all lived happily ever after once nomura and otto gave their statements to the police and then swore to never watch over strickler’s spawn for more than an hour at a time ever again

I KNOW there's no evidence in the show that Nomura, Strickler and Otto were anything other than coworkers, but it would make sense for Changelings to work with nestmates, people they were trained alongside, the ones that survived the lessons. I headcannon that Nomura and Strickler bonded first, and Otto is slightly younger, was added to the group later and never entirely fit in. The annoying little brother who tagged along.
I've always gone along with the fanon of Nomura being the youngest, BUT now that you've said that Otto does have powerful youngest sibling energy and I can't unsee it
