Reunion

Feet felt like lead as he stood on the welcome mat of the Lake residence. How long it had been since Jim last stood in front of his home. Months had passed by since he left his mother's care to help the trolls find their way to a new Hearthstone. Months since he had last seen her, held her, heard her voice. Months since he had been in human flesh and blood. Yet here he stood, unable to open the door without hesitation. Could he really return to a normal life after all he had been through?

Jim swallowed thickly as he reached for the handle of the door. There was no way to know unless he went through the door. Turning the knob, the door opened with a familiar creak as he laid eyes upon unchanged surroundings. Everything seemed the same. The smells, the sounds, everything still in its proper place as it should be. Taking a deep breath, he stepped inside.

“Mom? Are you home?”

“I am putting a hard no on that one, I suspect he has the same reasons I do. We’ve been on the surface so long that our diets slowly evolved to be more human tolerable with the odd exception and I certainly have no intention of trying to force myself back onto a few centuries old habit. I had a pot noodle addiction for a while and still have no regrets.”
