Holašovice / Trebon / Slavonice
Sorry this post is a day late, but the day got away from me yesterday and I was too tired to write, but I also wanted to give updates on our adventures yesterday and today.
Yesterday we said farewell to the picturesque Cesky Krumlov & made our way to the small village of Holašovice, which has been deemed a UNESCO heritage site due to its unique architecture of connected large homes. We also got to visit a small pottery studio in the village with a lovely cat guarding all the creations.
We then made our way to the city of Trebon, known for its ponds & famous for its carp. We had lunch in a small resturant that was once the jail cell for Edward Kelly (the alchemist con man who fooled the nobility for many years before his con was discovered and then he died from a broken leg infection trying to escape prison). The carp was actually quite delicious, and we also got to try burčák, which is Czech for “early wine”, as it is the beginning fermentation of the grapes harvested in the autumn months, before it is bottled and turned into white wine. It tasted a bit like the mix between apple cider & a Riesling, and was very delicious. We did a quick walk through the Trebon castle grounds and got to see the “goat moat”; the moat area that is now inhabited by goats but has also been inhabited by bears and other creatures. This seems to be a theme in Czechia; filling moats with animals versus water.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We then made our way to Slavonice, past some large fields of sunflowers. In Slavonice, we once again saw examples of the Scrafito style of designs on the buildings, this building more elaborate due to being owned by a Italian family. Inside this building we got to see something may others do not get to see; the Apocalypse House. The inside of the upper floor of the building used to be a religious gathering room for Protestants during the Catholic rule, and the walls contain frescos from 1568 depicting stories from the Book of Revelation. It is a hidden gem of the area that not many people even know exist, and we got to see the frescos up close and observe some of the unique depictions of the time of both the Devil, the angels and archangels, and the City of Babylon. It was utterly fascinating.
Tumblr media
Dinner was a delicious meal of roasted lamb with wheat grouts with bear garlic. The old mill next door had a small “zoo” of sorts for the area, with emus, some pigs, donkeys & geese. We also got to have a glass of local wine which though a bit dry for my taste, but still delicious.
Today, we got to experience something truly magical when we spent the morning & part of the afternoon at a goat farm, owned by the lovely Hanna & her friend Susanna. As someone who loved going to the horse farm as a child & also a lover of the farm atmosphere in general, this was truly awesome for me. The farm also has three working herding dogs who were got to see in action with herding the goats in and out of the barn. Myself I was able to help shovel the hay to feed the goats and then even got a chance to milk a goat (another thing crossed off my life list!). We learned about how Hanna’s family lost and then regained the farm, and also the work that has gone into making the farm a fully working and profitable farm. We also got a tour of a saw mill on the property that has been able to be restored due to a grant from the Henry Ford Foundation. I was able to get video of the mill in action; it was so cool to see it working because some of my favorite historical fictional novels describe the workings of such a mill but it is even cooler to see in person. We then split into groups for anyone to help make the lunch for the day, so I got to help building the fire to roast the sausages and brie, while Mom & Pat helped in the kitchen with the salad making. Johanka taught me about the special way Czechs prepare their sausages for roasting, making slits at the ends to when the ends are cooking they curl up like octopus legs. I personally thought that is super fun.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I got the chance to speak with Susanna off and on during the trip as I found out that outside of helping out on the farm, she works as an elementary school teacher. She and I talked about some of the difficulties of working with the younger generation and also some of the issues we run into working alongside parents who either are unengaged or don’t want to make changes for the sake of their children. It was interesting to see how even a world apart, those of us who work to try and help the younger generation are sharing the same problems. It was also nice to talk to someone who understands how tough yet rewarding this job can be.
After the wonderful day at the goat farm, Mom & I and our new friend Steve headed back to the hotel while the others went on to tour a local bunker from the 1960s era, as the three of us were all in a need of short snooze/siesta. A nice siesta later and we all met downstairs to tour the wine cellar in the bottom of the hotel. The hotel has a cave that is thought to be created back in the 1200s as a place to store wine and food, due to its cold & dark climate, and now houses the hotel’s collection of 3,000 different bottles of wine. We got to try some delicious white wines including a Riesling from 1997 that was beyond delightful. When then all made our way up to the hotel restaurant, where we were treated to another couple of glasses of delicious wine from the hotel collection, as well as being serenaded by the Slavonice Band. These two gentlemen entertained us not just with tradition Czech & Hungarian songs, but even some blues & folk, including a rousing sing-along of “Take Me Home, Country Roads.” If you told me a year ago I would be singing that song with a Czech folk rock band in a wine restaurant in a small village in Southern Bohemia, Czechia, I would look at you like you were absolutely bonkers. But I can now add that to my list of incredible stories to share from this trip.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tomorrow we officially depart from Czech Republic & we make our way to Bratislava, Slovakia 🇸🇰
Until then my dear readers, I bid you all farewell.
Lowrs💜

Me and a friend are watching Buck Rogers in the 25th Century and it is EXCELLENT and fun cheesy late 70s/early 80s sci-fi show.
In last night's episode Buck's Duel to the Death, our villain was the Trebon, who likes kidnapping young women to his harem and then making having them give him a manicure.
Because mean villains deserve some me-time as well.

By 1587, Dee and Kelley were tired. After barely escaping questioning by church authorities, several failed attempts to garner new patronage, the pair had settled in Trebon with their money dwindling, their political influence exhausted, and their prospects few. Kelley was at his psychic limit. Dee began to doubt, writing he found “much halthing and untruth” in Kelley’s work, fearing that he was under the influence of improperly-repelled spirits. [1] Yet, he remained firm in his belief in the word of the angels.
When the Angel Madimi appeared, and said that Kelley had to be punished for taking a wife against the angels wishes (even though the angels asked him to in the first place), the pair were confused. When Madimi said the wizards had to share their wives, the pair were confused. They asked if the angel meant spiritually, or sexually. Madimi responded “I speak concerning both.” [2] Later, it was explained that this act would unify Dee and Kelley as a single being, which would usher in the first phase of the apocalypse.
On May 22nd, the foursome commenced. Kelley and Jane Dee consummated, but Dee himself could not, and simply spent the night with Joanna Kelley. The next morning, during their scyring session, one of the most important events in all of magical history occurred.

I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the university at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during the day. I have talked to gods, loved women, and written songs that make the minstrels weep.
You may have heard of me.

[Image ID: A drawing of Kvothe. His hair is down to his shoulders and red. His eyes are bright green and his skin is pale. He is smirking, one hand clutching his shoulder strap, and the other hand raised level to his chin, as if grasping for air. He is wearing a long green coat and a grey undershirt with a dark belt, and leather pants. His lute is strapped behind him. The background is a dark grey with greenish wisps of air flowing around him. /End ID]

I rarely do negative reviews, especially of books I did not finish, but @smalltownfae asked me for my opinion on The First Binding as a KKC fan, and I think it can be useful for other people so here it is.
TL;DR: if you loved or hated KKC, this book will probably piss you off. If you have never read KKC but love high fantasy and storytelling, it might be your next favorite book!
I stopped at the hundred pages mark (out of eight hundred) because the similarities kept jolting me out of the story. Here’s a selection of quotes that particularly gave me pause, with their KKC counterparts
Tumblr media
“ The Waystone Inn lay in silence, and it was a silence of three parts. The most obvious part was a hollow, echoing quiet, made by things that were lacking. If there had been a wind it would have sighed trough the trees, set the inn’s sign creaking on its hooks, and brushed the silence down the road like trailing autumn leaves. If there had been a crowd, even a handful of men inside the inn, they would have filled the silence with coversation and laughter, the clatter and clamour one expects from a drinking house during the dark hours of the night. If there had been music…but no, of curse there was no music. In fact there were none of these things, and so the silence remained. “
From the first chapter and the prologue, respectively. The parallel of stillness and silence and the general feel of the writing are very similar already.
Tumblr media
"Kvothe here played the simplest song in the world and made it look like he was spinning gold out of flax," Marie said. "Then he took a real piece of music, something only a handful of folk in the whole place could play, and made it look so easy you'd think a child could blow it on a tin whistle."
So literally the same plot device...
Tumblr media
“They say the Lethani is a secret power. Adem keep their words inside." I made a gesture as if gathering things close to my body and hoarding them. "Then those words are like wood in a fire. This word fire makes the Adem very strong. Very fast. Skin like iron. This is why you can fight many men and win.”
Not exactly to the same effect, but magic focused on hoarding words and burning them like wood...
Tumblr media
Do not dare hold hope that any woman could burn as brightly as the voice that sang the part of Aloine.
Girl sings. Hero gives her a name. Eloine - Aloine.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My name is Kvothe, pronounced nearly the same as "quothe." Names are important as they tell you a great deal about a person. I've had more names than anyone has a right to. The Adem call me Maedre. Which, depending on how it's spoken, can mean The Flame, The Thunder, or The Broken Tree. "The Flame" is obvious if you've ever seen me. I have red hair, bright. If I had been born a couple of hundred years ago I would probably have been burned as a demon. I keep it short but it's unruly. When left to its own devices, it sticks up and makes me look as if I have been set afire. "The Thunder" I attribute to a strong baritone and a great deal of stage training at an early age. I've never thought of "The Broken Tree" as very significant. Although in retrospect, I suppose it could be considered at least partially prophetic. My first mentor called me E'lir because I was clever and I knew it. My first real lover called me Dulator because she liked the sound of it. I have been called Shadicar, Lightfinger, and Six-String. I have been called Kvothe the Bloodless, Kvothe the Arcane, and Kvothe Kingkiller. I have earned those names. Bought and paid for them. But I was brought up as Kvothe. My father once told me it meant "to know." I have, of course, been called many other things. Most of them uncouth, although very few were unearned. I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the University at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during day. I have talked to Gods, loved women, and written songs that make the minstrels weep. You may have heard of me.
That whole introduction of the hero, down to the events themselves, is extremely similar
Tumblr media
Ravel is a term my people find particularly offensive. Its use makes light of the systematic slaughter of thousands of Ruh.
Race of storytellers treated like shit and called ravels.
IN CONCLUSION:
None of these things on its own would have bothered me too much, to be honest. But side by side, every couple pages? Add to that the mythology dump early on, and I felt past caring already.
The worst part is, when it is doing its own thing, it feels like a good book, with some excellent quotes and fresh concepts. But it keeps hammering me over the head with KKC things that feel too close to references to be coincidences, and I’m over it lol

notes from notw read-along ep2 (pt 1), or: wow, fans of this book really need to branch out
listen to the podcast here
so one of the hosts is a PhD candidate at Johns Hopkins. we know this because he brings it up regularly, as if worried we'd forget
he starts off with a story about how he taught a class on Tolkein and casually dropped the fact that it was so well received he got an award. all essential to his point, of course, which is that a professor asked him a question. and now he gives us this question back. is this book like, good?
anyway mr. johns hopkins immediately calls PR a twat for having a pronunciation guide but since that's actually very common and normal in fantasy and widely appreciated amongst readers, he got some resistance from the other hosts. I personally like pronunciation guides!
I think he has a lot of substantial critique to give but he's so full of himself about it, which is hilarious given the podcast's critique of PR
fun fact: it's not 'the kingkiller chronicles" it's "the kingkiller chronicle" just the one. which yeah, it is just one in-universe. but damn that's annoying
so our story starts in the town of, I shit you not, "Nawerre" which is apparently pronounced like "noire" but looks a hell of a lot like "nowhere" to me
his inn is described as very generic, with meaningless words describing a flavorless setting but "the vibes are nice"
MC'S FIRST WORDS IN THE BOOK ARE "ACTUALLY" that's so funny
fun fact number two: PR said he wanted to make "an entirely new kind of fantasy" and "a story unlike any other"
HA
you know what's actually a story unlike any other? hunter x hunter. and even togashi drew inspiration from the work of araki and his stand magic. you can't act like you're not drawing on any previous work here pat your entire magic system is practically taken right from earthsea, a vastly superior work in every single way
because when uklg write she actually...says things
also, there's half a theme of stories about stories and framing devices...black sails did it better
so when mc's identity is sussed out the (super cool) mc delivers a monologue that had me cringing even as a 15 year old...behold the ultimate reddit copypasta
“I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. You may have heard of me.”
I don't have an issue with big badass boasts but this is SO funny ohhh he ~loved women~ really impressive you know who else loved woman? gomez addams and he wasn't nearly as weird about it
iso yeah this is not effective for several reasons
first is that we don't know the context for any of these things because we just started the book. no, we haven't heard of him. because we just started the fucking book. and the guy he's talking to...does he even respond like he's impressed? I don't think he does?
well I'd rather die than go check because I hate this book so someone else will have to let me know
the second reason this doesn't hit is that he's the one telling his story. there's a difference between a legendary figure having tales told of them and someone telling you directly they're hot shit
between seeing what impact they've had on other people/actually seeing what massive things they've done and just...being an innkeeper saying "oh yeah I was this legendary figure trust me" I know which one is stronger
see: cql opening on the entire cultivation world shouting about the yiling patriarch being dead. the entire scene is in chaos and he's obviously the one that made it happen. he has a title. he has notoriety. everyone knows about him and hates him. when he thinks to himself "you dare kick me?" when he first wakes up, it's believable because we have the context of fearful cultivators telling tales about him over a decade after his death. he's widely respected, feared, and copycatted, because he WAS that much of a big deal
third reason this monologue sucks is that it's badly written. it flows well enough, but the choices of words vary in formality and scale, leaving some accomplishments far more impressive-sounding (university line, moonlight line) and leaving others sounding like absolutely duds (talked to gods, LOVED WOMEN)
even "spoken with gods" would have sounded better
a male character bragging about how good he is at sex with women is literally one of the worst traits he can have. unless he really just means loving them. which like yeah? I hope you love the women in your life? is this a thing to brag about?
PR trying to make a new guy going "he's really hot and cool and he knows stuff and he's so smart he outsmarts the teacher and he had red hair and he's a genius musician also and he's SO good at sex" in fact you've just described about 8 million power fantasies. nothing wrong with a fun oc like kvothe. but not much original about it either. rand al'thor meets most of those and he's the jesus figure in a far more impressive series
one of the issues in making a genius character is that imo you kind of have to show them being so smart because just saying "he's really smart guys trust me" kind of falls flat
for intelligent characters, consider death note: a gripping psychological thriller that's always interesting to watch because the characters are all doing 4D chess and trying to guess each other's next move and manufacture events to work in their favor. but it doesn't have to be a crime drama - having characters think ahead, be creative, problem-solve in a variety of ways, and come to conclusions quickly also works. shit, you can also just look at ritsu from mp100 escaping the claw base at the end of s1 with nothing but a spoon, some weak esper kids, and his wits. read any of mr. darcy's letters in pride and prejudice and watch how effectively he communicates his nuanced and complex thoughts
one of the hosts, bless her heart, gently forwarded the idea that it was kind of nice the protag went through a lot of trauma and came out really confident, and that she hadn't seen many protags like that. and I respect that inspiration through the fictional character and I know this story is dear to her so I'm not criticizing, but my goodness. there are so many protags like that chief. watch some shonen
I don't think I could be part of a podcast that tore my favorite book apart.
PR was asked during an interview "What woman screwed you over so badly that you came up with Denna?" and he didn't really answer but he did admit she WAS based on someone he knew which is. absolutely horrendous given the way she's written and treated and how she's like the only major female character in the book. what the fuck is his problem
I had to go on reddit to confirm that so please don't ask me anyone I'm not going back to a site that praises him for that answer using the word "indeed"
the remainder of the section details PR's control issues regarding how he wants people to read his story (by having kvothe interrupt and telling the audience how to feel)
for the record I remember I read this part of the book easily enough. I don't think I really enjoyed it, except for in the rare moments PR restrained himself, when he actually provided some emotional impact
for example, the mc talks about running away from gangs in the city as a young child. he says "one time, they caught me" and for once did not elaborate. and that actually had an effect on me because then you have to imagine what happened to him because he never brings it up again, which is understandable
but I did not enjoy this book. it was not funny or original, none of the characters were interesting or likeable, and the worldbuilding was only occasionally entertaining. it's a very bland story and I don't know why it's so popular
anyway I've seen crit role and I agree with the one host's assessment that PR expects people to center him when he speaks
massive ego, as we now know
in conclusion his fans need to watch more anime and then maybe they'll calm down. on the other hand, I don't know if I want people who are PR fans to be consuming anime
austen already has a ton of rabid fans they should definitely read austen
anyway...see you next time for part 2

10 tiny towns in the Czech Republic with an interesting history
Tumblr media
Almost every seemingly secluded and tiny corner of the Czech Republic actually hides wonders - breathtaking historical buildings and attractions. We have prepared ten picturesque Czech towns that can be a real find for a traveler.
Cesky Krumlov
Possessing a special energy, Cesky Krumlov, despite its rather modest size, would be hard pressed to call it a single-use city. Travelers admit that with its leisurely rhythm and ancient charm, the town makes you fall in love the first time and makes you think about returning here again and again. By the way, the most beautiful and interesting part of the city territory, the historical center, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so its significance is difficult to overestimate. Key Attractions: Krumlov Castle, historical center, Church of St. Vitus
Tumblr media
Kunta Gora
And this city is a real treasure trove of a wide variety of historical attractions - from a Gothic temple to a medieval silver mine. But, perhaps, one of the most interesting places in this region is the ossuary, located in the near suburb of Kutna Hora - Sedlec. In fact, this frightening and at the same time attractive attraction is a church entirely created from the bones of thousands of people. Every year, thousands of tourists come to the Czech Republic to see one of the largest such buildings with their own eyes. Key Attractions: Ossuary, Cathedral of St. Barbara, Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and St. John the Baptist
Tumblr media
Olomouc
Olomouc is often (and I must say, quite deservedly) ranked among the Czech cities that can easily compete with Prague itself in the fight for the traveler’s attention. It is not surprising, because in its small territory there is such a significant concentration of historical attractions that the capital would be envious. Just by starting a walk around the city, you can find something almost everywhere worthy of a place on your Instagram - the local baroque squares and fountains are extremely photogenic. Key Attractions: Column of the Holy Trinity, St. Wenceslas Cathedral, Church of St. Mauritius
Tumblr media
Turnov
In addition to boasting a rich and eventful history, Turnov is also fortunate to be located in a region with breathtaking natural scenery, and it is no coincidence that it is often chosen as a starting point for independent travel in Czech Bohemia. Walking around the town, you just need to look around - everything here is beautiful and exciting. And also, for the information of lovely ladies, this is where the Czech pomegranate factory is located, where you can buy stone products at reasonable prices. Key attractions: Old town, ancient Church of St. Nicholas
Tumblr media
Karlstein
Karlštejn is the name of a luxurious fortress that should take its rightful place on our list. The castle was prudently built on a high cliff covered with greenery, which gives it even more charm. At the foot of this hill lies a tiny settlement of the same name. Key Attractions: Karlstejn fortress
Tumblr media
Trebon
Treboň is not only the cradle of the country's rich historical heritage, but also the birthplace of the best creators of local history: composer Josef Tribenze, as well as Czech football star Karel Poborský. Key Attractions: Church of St. Elizabeth, Trebon Castle, ramparts
Tumblr media
Marianske Lazne
Guests from all over the world flock here in an inexhaustible stream - primarily to drink water from local sources and improve their health. The healing power of this place was once experienced by Chopin, Wagner, Goethe (their house-museums and monuments can be visited in the city today) and many others. A pleasant bonus for vacationers has always been the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of this cozy garden city. Key Attractions: singing fountain, house-museum "Monument to Chopin", monument to Goethe
Tumblr media
Cheb
By the way, the same Goethe was clearly partial to another tiny pearl of the Czech Republic - the town of Cheb in the region of the same name. Its streets are remembered even more - life has been in full swing here since the times of the Holy Roman Empire. In its modern form, Cheb is a calm and prim, but culturally quite developed town with well-preserved examples of buildings from the early Middle Ages. Key Attractions: Imperial Palatinate, St. George's Square, St. Nicholas Church
Tumblr media
Ceske Budejovice
This town became popular many centuries ago, immediately after its founding, because it was here that many European trade routes converged: both land and water (the city is washed by two rivers). All this, of course, contributed to its systematic development in various styles. Travelers can still enjoy the fruits of urban development of those times by taking a walk around Ceske Budejovice. Key Attractions: Samson statue in the city square, Town Hall, Black Tower, Dominican monastery
Tumblr media
Beneshov
And this neat town, in its rather long history, has survived many turmoil, raids, wars and even arson. However, by some miracle, the town still survived and today happily welcomes guests, showing them the surviving sights. In addition, in the immediate vicinity of Benesov there is perhaps the most beautiful castle in the Czech Republic - the luxurious Konopiste, made in the Gothic style. Key Attractions: Church of St. Nicholas, Church of St. Anne
