Pola Negri, The terrasse of the Café de la Paix in Paris, Hand-colored Photographs by Burton Holmes, 1927.
“I must urgently recommend that you spend your first leisure hour in Paris at the corner table of the terrasse of the Café de la Paix. It is a fact known and proved that … you have only to sit at this corner long enough, and a friend will appear in time.” - Burton Holmes, Travelogues.
Pola Negri born Barbara Apolonia Chałupiec[a] (Polish, 1897-1987) was a stage and film actress and singer. She achieved worldwide fame during the silent and golden eras of Hollywood and European film for her tragedienne and femme fatale roles. She was also acknowledged as a sex symbol.

So, as someone living near Tagaytay, I never understood why would anyone willingly subject themselves to hours of commuting and crazy traffic when we had a cooler alternative nearby? Tagaytay is just an hour and a half away from Imus; 1 hour if you happen to ride a bus that will take you to the afterlife should the driver feel like it. But a mandatory company outing forced me to give Baguio a chance, and boy, was it a treat.
I was impressed by The Manor's classic and chic architecture. The place had a grandeur that blended perfectly with its mountainous surroundings. But let me tell you, the real highlight was the breakfast buffet! I'm talking about insanely delicious food that made me want to stay there forever. I became obsessed with the egg station, where those cooks whipped up omelets like nobody's business. And don't even get me started on the al fresco dining in the foggy garden. It was like something out of a fairy tale. Eating breakfast never felt so heavenly.
I loved the dangerous ride we had, similar to the exhilarating ones in Baler. Oh, our night ride was the most thrilling. It rained hard and we could not see anything. The car's air-conditioning broke so we had to slightly open the windows just to get a whiff of that cold Baguio breeze- small opening enough for the wind to enter, but also small enough for the rain to not pour inside the car. All the struggles were definitely worth it.
Oh, and Burnham Park is as busy as everybody said, but I surprisingly enjoyed strolling there. I had a great time sitting on a mini library watching the swan boats and the little humans wearing their adult-looking clothes. I wondered how lucky they are to be born at a time of improved fashion. I recalled how much of a potato and how shitty my fashion sense was. *cringes in jeje*
Now, let's talk about Good Taste Restaurant. It blew my mind with its impressive efficiency. They had serving robots that moved around flawlessly, creating a unique kind of ASMR experience. We took tons of videos of them. The staff also worked like well-oiled machines, serving food and cleaning tables with incredible precision. It made me wish for the same level of efficiency in my workplace, in my apartment, hometown, and community. Plus, the food there was divine! I wanted to eat more, but my stomach had its limits.
We also managed to squeeze in a visit to "Ilikha," although it was closing time. Despite the limited time, I caught glimpses of its magical charm. We also spend a few hours at BenCab Museum. It was amazing; its erotica collection, the historical Philippines and the Japanese occupation. Outside BenCab, I found peace looking at a tree filled with pink "parols," and thought that even when Leni Robredo did not get to be the president, I was well dam sure that her fight had inspired countless others. Those festive decorations symbolized hope and resilience.
It has not been that long, but I miss Baguio already. My older self could never even begin to understand, but I do now. Baguio really has its charms.

MISS CONENGINALITY - BRITTEN-NORMAN BN-2 ISLANDER
Remember when the UK made the best airplanes in the world? Me neither, I wouldn't be born for several decades. Anyway, Britten-Norman Islander.
Tumblr media
image: Air Seychelles
The last holdout of the UK making really fantastic planes, the Islander is a popular regional airliner and utility plane used for things like skydiving and air ambulance service as well as the typical passenger and cargo flights. At first glance she's a pretty regular high-wing twin-prop that seats 10, but look closer and you may begin to notice things.
Upfront, I love the Islander. (Obviously, or I wouldn't be making this post about it.) My love for this plane isn't solely organically developed, because it does also hold a special nostalgic place in my heart for being the first propeller plane I ever flew on, with Cape Air in 2015 from San Juan to Vieques. (As Vieques Air Link also operates these, they're a common sight down there! The name of the model is, as it were, very apt.)
Tumblr media
image: Cape Air This is the exact plane that I flew on!
Now, from this image you can already see that the Islander has some lovely features, from those absolute bollards coming out of the engines to the wildly pointy nose (not the first plane I've discussed that's giving DUKW), but despite looking goofier the closer you look at it this thing is an incredibly beloved and reliable plane.
Tumblr media
image: Bonham's Behold, a Britten-Norman BN-2 Islander.
Also of note is the Islander's extremely low wing aspect ratio, and I've always thought the tailplane looked a little too small for the tailfin from the side despite looking giant from below. The general ratios on this plane, in every single possible place, look just ever-so-slightly off, and I love it.
Tumblr media
image: Mark Harkin I mean. She's just blocks.
Still, this is an incredibly well-designed plane. It's cheap, rugged, utilitarian, reliable, versatile, and remarkably stable in flight, which is why over 1,000 have been built to date. (Personally, I didn't find the cabin to be the roomiest even for an aircraft of its size, but I remember it being a comfortable enough flight.) The Islander is still in production today despite first flying in the mid-1960s, which is something few models can claim. You can use an Islander for basically anything, with their big doors and STOL capability, and it's even used for the world's shortest flight and an entry on my bucket list, the two-minute hop between Westray and Papa Westray operated by Loganair.
Tumblr media
image: National Museum of Flight Scotland Despite being shown outside in this photograph, she currently lives in the civil aviation hangar, a top pick on my list of places I would like to secretly live in for the rest of my life.
Tumblr media
image: own work, taken inside the civil aviation hangar at the National Museum of Flight, Scotland
In late October I visited the National Museum of Flight, Scotland. It was an incredible experience and I will be discussing it across several future posts due to the sheer variety of preserved airframes they had, including everything from a Puss Moth to a jump jet. (The general museum will probably get a dedicated post as well in the future - suffice to say I had a fantastic time.) Among their preserved aircraft is a BN-2 Islander registered G-BELF, painted a vivid highlighter-yellow which pictures really can't do justice in homage to Scottish air ambulances which serve isolated island communities in the North Sea.
Tumblr media
I was absolutely delighted to see her in person. Seven years after I last stepped foot in an Islander, it felt like something of a reunion to just stand next to a mothballed airframe and admire how...really strange-looking these planes actually are.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
own work, obvi
I mean, for one thing, they're a lot shorter than you might think they should be. Pictured for scale is a 165cm/5'5" tall human with a PSA Lockheed TriStar for a face. I couldn't get that good of an angle on it, but my head is only a few inches short of the wing, and you can see that I'm well taller than the cabin windows. An entire Islander is shorter than a single Concorde tire.
Tumblr media
Plus, that wing chord is so long I could use her as a shelter in the rain.
So, yeah. That's the story of how I met my favorite commuter airliner. I hope to fly on one again someday, but for the moment I'll have to be content with looking at pictures of these weird-looking planes that can fool you for a moment into thinking they're regular.
Tumblr media
Also they tried to put propeller shrouds on one once.

did the boston public library mission. his gap moe tendencies have bewitched me + misc from vault 81- the companion pathing that prioritizes 'finding a place to sit down and idle' when free makes how much you have to run around doing chores in this place really funny.

Traveling the world, discovering new cuisines and meeting fascinating people is what makes life worth living. But it's not just about the solo journey, it's about creating a community of like-minded individuals who share a passion for the road less traveled, who revel in the thrill of trying something new and who are always seeking out the next great meal. By coming together and sharing our experiences, we can inspire each other to continue our quest for knowledge and fulfillment through food and travel. And, of course, we'll make sure to document every mouth-watering bite and memorable encounter along the way. Because in the end, it's not just about the destination, but about the journey and the people we share it with. #Writer #Traveler #Storyteller #Travelogue #writersofinstagram #WritersOfPost #travelogues (at Del Mar Beach) https://www.instagram.com/p/Co2YG6Dp0E8/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Can we talk about the fact that Baiheng was a Nameless more??? WHEN?? Like it’s put in quite a few places but it’s never acknowledged except in Bailu’s line where she talks about the dreams she has while on the Express.
Like that’s such a cool But Also such a HUGE thing and yet it isn’t mentioned by any of the characters in any quests like oh my god. Maybe it’s being saved or something for a wow big reveal look at who some of the previous Nameless were of my god it’s Baiheng!! But like c’mon… no hints or vague mentions?
I dunno, I think we need to talk about it more. Like it’s right there when you go to send out assignments! They’re all affiliated with different factions and Baiheng !! Was the one quoted there they had for the Nameless!!
I need more content of her in general, the lack of it hurts my heart so much
