Slavery in Australia. Queensland attempted to “build a second Louisiana” based on explicit racial castes and the wealth of sugar plantations. Islanders from the South Pacific were kidnapped and forced to work on plantations. Between 1863 and 1904, there were at least 62,000 Islanders brought to Australia, and they composed 85% of sugar field workforce. The prominent Queensland planter Louis Hope bought his sugar plants from a slaver, and also hired field supervisors who had been slave overseers in Jamaica. The city of Townsville (Queensland) is named for Robert Towns, who had chartered ships loaded with Islanders brought to work on his property. The town of Tascott (New South Wales) is named for Australia’s celebrated sugar industry pioneer, who had initially made his wealth buying, selling, and managing African slaves at his family’s plantation in the Caribbean. Even so-called “liberal” or “reformist” politicians at the time proposed, as an alternative to Queensland’s “death squad” mounted police killings of Indigenous people, that Aboriginal people simply be captured and forced to work like the Islanders. In 1884, an Australian vessel opened fire and killed at least 38 Islanders resisting kidnapping/recruitment. Prime Minister Barton and Attorney General Alfred Deakin boasted that Australia’s constitution was superior to the United States’s because the Australian document gave explicit permission for racial discrimination and non-white immigration restriction. Then, frightened that Islanders and Aboriginal laborers might gain too much social presence, the government tried deporting all of the Islanders, beginning in 1904.

Text below is an excerpt from an overview of Queensland’s “sugar slavery,” an article from 2022 by scholar Jeff Sparrow.

[T]he practice – sometimes known as “sugar slavery” [...] was not a minor or incidental phenomenon. In fact, it was so important to plantation owners that, to defend it, they briefly contemplated separation from the rest of the colony, with Townsville mooted as the capital of what many observers dubbed a “slave state”. This “scheme for the extension and perpetuation of the slavery system” showed, one journalist claimed at the time, that Queensland had become “what the United States were before the Wars of the Secession”. [...]

Australia’s first prime minister, Edmund Barton, explained, quite accurately, that the “limited slavery” of the cane fields had agitated “the whole of Australia” and so was “a question which belongs to the Federation we have succeeded in establishing”. He also outlined the shocking philosophy upon which he considered Australia based:

I do not think either that the doctrine of the equality of man was really ever intended to include racial equality. There is no racial equality. There is basic inequality. These races are, in comparison with white races – I think no one wants convincing of this fact – unequal and inferior. The doctrine of the equality of man was never intended to apply to the equality of the Englishman and the Chinaman. There is deep-set difference, and we see no prospect and no promise of its ever being effaced. Nothing in this world can put these two races upon an equality. Nothing we can do by cultivation, by refinement, or by anything else will make some races equal to others. [...]

In the Australian context, a strange contradiction contributes to the ongoing amnesia about slavery and its consequences. From the very beginning, enslavement shaped white settlement in Australia [...].

From the very start, the Australian sugar industry demonstrated how formal and real freedoms might collide.

In Tascott, New South Wales, you can still find a plaque celebrating the man who gave the town its name: a certain Thomas Scott, who, we are told, “arrived in the colony in 1816 [and] pioneered the sugar industry in Australia”. The Tascott memorial neglects to mention Scott’s background in the slave trade. Yet that was how he developed his familiarity with sugar. As a young man, he assisted an uncle buying and selling Africans, before he began managing slave labour on his family’s plantation in Antigua. [...]

In the context of that widespread enthusiasm for the South (the welcome extended to the Confederate ship Shenandoah in Melbourne in 1865 led one of its officers to conclude “the heart of colonial Britain was in our cause”), Queenslanders dreamed of building a “second Louisiana”. They could, they thought, capitalise on the disruption of the international cotton and sugar trades [...].

So, in 1863, the shipping tycoon Robert Towns (the man who gave Townsville its name) tried another approach. Towns knew that, back in 1847, an entrepreneur called Benjamin Boyd – another man with a background in Caribbean slavery – had scandalised the colony by transporting men from the Pacific Islands of Tanna and Lifou to supply his cattle station with labour. In Boyd’s inauspicious venture, Towns glimpsed a solution, a means by which he might recreate Louisiana in Queensland. The insatiable demands of the textile industry meant, he thought, that cotton plantations would be far more profitable than Boyd’s cattle stations. Accordingly, Towns chartered a ship called the Don Juan and sailed it to the New Hebrides from where it returned crammed with Islanders destined for Towns’ huge property near the Logan River.

That was how it began.

Between 1863 and 1904, 62,000 South Sea Islanders were transported to Australia, landing in Brisbane, Maryborough, Bundaberg, Rockhampton, Mackay, Bowen, Townsville, Innisfail and Cairns. Most indentured labourers arrived from the New Hebrides, with a substantial proportion taken from the Solomons, as well as smaller islands. By the 1890s, Pacific Islanders constituted 85 per cent of the workforce for Australian sugar.

The men did not merely adopt a lifestyle associated with New World slavery. They also relied on its techniques and its personnel. [...]

Hope, for instance, acquired his sugar plants from the old slaver Thomas Scott. He hired supervisors from Jamaica and Barbados, looking for those with experience driving plantation slaves. To obtain the men for his fields, he turned – just as Boyd had before him – to a certain Captain Lewin, a notoriously shady character.

The Royal Navy’s Commander George Palmer described Lewin’s vessels as “fitted up precisely like an African slaver, minus the irons” and noted that, “I heard of him [Lewin] at every island I was at as a man stealer and kidnapper”. [...] Between 1863 and 1868, this was the man responsible for “recruiting” nearly half the Islanders who arrived in Australia. [...]

In 1884, at the height of that demand, a vessel called the Hopeful opened fire on Islanders who resisted being stolen, killing at least 38 people and possibly more. [...] By 1884, the annual mortality rate for Islanders in Queensland had climbed to 147 deaths per 1000 people. [...]

The Conservative Premier Sir Thomas McIlwraith, a man with personal interests in the sugar industry, expressed the perspective of the planters. He wanted, he said, a Queensland both successful and white. [...] Hence the necessity for a subservient caste of Islanders, who could ensure Queensland remained “a white man’s colony, influenced by white men and owned by white men”. His Liberal rival Samuel Griffith, on the other hand, argued that the importation of Islanders would foster the “degeneration which we have seen whenever the black and white races have endeavoured to mix”. [...]

Local parliamentarians pledged not to make the same mistake, congratulating themselves on the superiority of their constitution over the one ratified by the United States, on the basis that its Section 51 (the so-called “race powers”) allowed them, as Prime Minister Barton had explained, “to regulate the affairs of the people of coloured or inferior races who are in the Commonwealth”.

Attorney General Alfred Deakin went so far as to boast that “our Constitution marks a distinct advance upon and difference from that of the United States”. Its passages explicitly permitting racial discrimination enabled parliament to pass the Immigration Restriction Act (to keep non-whites out) and the Pacific Islands Labourers Act (to deport those Islanders already in Australia).

“The two things go hand in hand,” Deakin explained. Stopping the “lesser races” from arriving (with Islander recruitment ceasing in 1903) and expelling those who were currently resident: these were “the necessary complement of a single policy – the policy of securing a White Australia”.

The new nation thus signalled its birth by [...] ethnically cleansing its former slaves. The deportations began in 1904.

Here's a Commission I paid @murumokirby360 to draw. He drew me for a Halloween pic, the Powerpuff girls enter the Dark Hour from Persona 3. The Powerpuff girls have lost their Chemical X Powers and now they have to use their Evokers and the Weapons the Persona players use, And Koromaru got to tag along with Blossom and Buttercup. Bubbles was the one who lost her powers due to her using an Evoker to get back at Townsville. Let's say this is an alternative version of Bubble Vicious which I do feel bad for Bubbles like people are treating her badly. So for that, Bubbles wanted things to be better, so she picked up an Evoker and a Persona called Palladian. So Bubbles used her powers a little differently and even got back at Blossom and Buttercup for not treating her well. So Blossom and Buttercup felt Guilty in shame. And worst, Townsville has now entered the Dark Hour where everyone in Townsville has turned into Coffins. This might be the work of Nyx. Nyx even tried putting the Villains in Coffins as well, Koromaru came in and gave Blossom and Buttercup an Evoker, but then Blossom and Buttercup have the same Persona called Orpheus, except in a different design. Like how the Male and Female Protagonists use. So now in order to save Townsville, looks like the girls will have to use their Persona Powers in order to save Townsville as well as for Cartoon Network City. And I'm sure the other Cartoon Network characters will help the girls out too. Like Johnny Bravo, Little Suzy, Cow, Numbuh 5, Numbuh 2, Double D and Ed. Maybe they might've got Evokers too and got the Persona that the characters in Persona 3 use. It looks like the Cartoon Network characters now have the powers and work for the Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad. I hope the Professor, Miss. Keen, the Mayor and Miss Bellum will count on them to save Cartoon Network City and Townsville and Stop Nyx from causing the Dark Hour.

And I'm also looking into getting Persona 3 Reloaded when it comes out in 4 Months. Wanted to check it out compared to the original and Portable. Like the Voice acting, the Music and the Graphics. Even if I can get it for either Xbox One or PlayStation 5.

In the comics, we see that the Powerpunk Girls are created in an alternate universe by Oppressor Plutonium.

And while there's nothing inherently wrong with that, I'd like to propose another idea that does away with the alternate universe route to keep things simple by giving them a creator who exists in the Powerpuff's universe.

My suggestion? Dick Hardly. He's one of the few scientists that manages to get his hands on Chemical X and due to his ineptitude, him accidentally creating the Powerpunk Girls could be plausible (plus he was already making counterfeit Powerpuffs for hire/profit).

I just imagine him in his office or whatever, cleaning his desk (maybe to impress a woman), and he hurriedly throws away some salt packets, a half empty, expired bottle of vinegar, and every other vulgar thing he'd might have lying around. Maybe a glass vial of Chemical X falls out of his lab coat and into the trash can and then BOOM! The Powerpunk Girls are born!

But he hates them! They're nothing like the originals, they're mean, selfish, rebellious, with a dangerous destructive tendency, and he has no problem reminding them about their failures, that they're failures. They're toxic assets ("At least the rejects are obedient"), but he needs the muscle so he keeps them around as his lackeys. The Powerpunks hate the comparisons, and their resentment toward the Powerpuffs begins to form, as well as their weird, complicated relationship with their...boss. Sure, they can't stand him either but it'd be nice if they were treated with some respect as individuals of their own right.

They witness Professor Utonium pleading with Dick to let his girls go from afar. Before anything can be done, Dick meets his demise (or does he? 😉) while the Powerpuffs get their perfect, happy ending. This leaves the Powerpunks wanting closure, leaving their thoughts on Dick to be even more convoluted. Are they angry that the Powerpuffs ultimately caused the death of their father or are they angry that the Powerpuffs beat them to it? Not even they know.

They flee from Townsville, away from anything related to Dick or those girls, living a carefree, crime ridden, crazy life of their own. Years later, they're approached by a certain someone who hates the Powerpuffs just as much as they do and are in the market for three new superpowered siblings with a insatiable appetite for destruction, since the last trio before them defied him.

futaba sakura & the person who Saved Her…. futaba saved herself but she would not have had the chance to get there without the phantom thieves. because p5 is a little bit about how you need human connection & friendships & the support of others, to keep you going, to get you through difficulties. futaba needed the phantom thieves because she couldnt get out of the terrible mental place she was in on her Own & she treasures their help so much & Especially. Akira. akira, her beloved human meat shield, the guy who does the talking to strangers in target for her, someone she can trust to push her just enough that its good for her and not overwhelming. her Key Item <3 and he is dedicated to helping her out, usually in the form of standing between her & an intimidating person, and helping her achieve her goals, and telling her what a good job she is doing

your ideal/headcanon version of it? how does it differ from how it is in canon & why is this your favorite version? any other alternate versions of it you enjoy?

ok i say “theyre siblings” A LOT about characters. I throw the concept around a bit lightly. With Akira & Futaba my full force is behind it. I mean it the same way i mean it with characters who are actually canonically part of the same family. like they are Speedrunning the traditional sibling experience.

They’re literally the PERFECT annoying older brother & annoying little sister duo. They aren’t actually capable of annoying Each Other, but they try it anyway, and their combo damage when they team up to annoy someone else? Outstanding. You wont sleep for a week knowing these 2 teens could be anywhere waiting to bully and prank you.

They are INSEPARABLE <3 not literally. akira does lots of things without futaba & one of futabas Goals is to have the ability to go outside and do new things and interact with new people Without having akira with her. but like. They bonded & now they cannot conceive of their lives without each other. They will never stop being friends because they are like actual siblings to each other. They’re stuck together for life.

basically the version of them from my mind is like them from canon but if akira wasnt a silent protagonist so he got to do more… they bully each other but they also hype each other up a bunch… they collaborate to tease sojiro and shout about curry… theyre a fambly. and they are the autism creature together. sound of akira teaching futaba Brand New Coping Mechanisms For Existing In The World. theyre so. i love them so much.

what do you like about their relationship, why is it interesting or enjoyable to you?

As some of my other responses have shown I just really like sibling relationships i thimk they’re neat <3 and i like futaba a lot. and i like akira a lot. and i. *starts crying* Family……. they warm my little heart

again!!! futaba has a lot of trust in the phantom thieves and gratitude to them for helping her when she couldn’t do it on her own and it goes extra for akira bc hes also the perfect person to go to for just like. all the stuff she needs. stand near me at the store so i feel like im not on my own. hold me to the promises i made & things i want to achieve. and futaba hasnt HAD. close friends in person. in quite a while. so this is so IMPORTANT and GOOD for her.

they hang out at the sakura house while sojiro is @ leblanc so they can play world is mine and the ultimate showdown of ultimate destiny at max volume. they pester sojiro (ongoing). they annoy so many people together (just imagine. akira futaba and sumi ALL teaming up to bully akechi together. he would evaporate) also see: the ongoing concept from my brain that ive talked about multiple times before thats just. i think itd be really funny if they start talking about themselves & each other to strangers as if theyre literal blood related siblings who grew up together and did not meet for the first time in their teens. okaaaay i guess thats all i just want to see them hang out i love them. thank you <3

verse 001 : powerpuff girls (main)

arc 001 : 18-21. set years after the 1998 cartoon, this verse follows bubbles post high school graduation, through college and beyond. this verse may be updated as the blog progresses. ⌜joy and laughter⌟.

arc 002 : 21-22. even at age five, there was a darkness hidden in bubbles. it was only a matter of time before she lost the battle to the shadows and gave in. all it took was an accidental kill, and something inside her snapped. gone was the sweet and joyful bubbles the world had known. it was time to show everyone just how hardcore she could be. ⌜to the edge⌟.

arc 003 : 22-30. it’s never easy to gain back trust once it’s been broken. harder still when you don’t believe you deserve forgiveness yourself. following her deep dive into darkness, and the steep climb back towards the light, bubbles finds herself doing everything she can to make right the wrongs she caused. it’s a long list, but she knows she’s got support in her journey. even if she doesn’t feel she’s earned it. ⌜don’t look down⌟.

arc 004 : 30+. easy after a lifetime devoted to fighting crime. now a mother of two twin girls, bubbles can confirm that’s not quite the case. especially when the kids come with powers, and the city still counts on you to help out every now and then. finding a balance is key, and maintaining that balance is a must. (note: bubbles married okboomr’s boomer. their daughters are bunny jolene utonium & blair josie utonium.) ⌜just in time⌟.

au 002 : in an alternate universe we find the city of vilestown, home to the powerpunk girls. made up of salt, vinegar, and everything nasty, the powerpunk girls terrorize their hometown, and occasionally the world. gone is bubbles utonium, and in her place we find brat plutonium. just as cute as her townsville counterpart, do not let her looks or plushie collection deceive you. not only does she live up to her name, but brat surpasses it with an evil, chaotic energy to rival that of townsville’s rowdyruff boys. ⌜powerpunk⌟.

au 002 : specific to interactions with other bubbles, because duplicates are fun and the multiverse gets that. ⌜multiverse⌟.

verse 002 : fandomless

arc 001 : essentially an excuse to have a verse without bubbles’s powers. born and raised in new york city, bubbles buffy moved to sunny los angeles post graduation. she makes money as a youtuber, and enjoys the freedom that comes with the job. in addition to her online presence, she is slowly working towards a degree in marine biology, as well as the arts, more specifically mixed media. ⌜la baby⌟.

verse 003 : descendants / sky high

arc 001 : set during the events of descendants 3. unlike the royals of the united states of auradon, bubbles and her sisters attended a school of a different sort. sky high. outside the jurisdiction of auradon, the school of tomorrow’s superheroes helps prepare its students for a life of fighting crime and trading quips with future villainous foes. ⌜sky’s the limit⌟.

arc 002 : set after descendants 3, bubbles takes it upon herself to help those of the isle acclimate to life in auradon. she also volunteers for isle clean up and villain rehabilitation whenever she can. ⌜break this down⌟.

verse 004 : tvdu

arc 001 : one of few fae to escape the fate of malivore, bubbles buffy is a banshee. how did she manage this? she was captured instead by something much worse. the augustine society, tracking her down using the uncontrollable banshee’s wail. for years she was held prisoner, muzzled so as to prevent her vocalized attacks as they performed torturous experiments on her. by the time she was found and rescued, she was able to pass herself off as a witch who specialized in sound magic. better to lie than risk her survival. ⌜science fiction fantasy⌟.

verse 005 : supernatural

arc 001 : found at the site of massacre,bubbles buffy is the last remaining member of a benevolent banshee clan. she was adopted and raised by the hunter (& man of letters) who’d discovered her, along with two adoptive sisters. trained in the ways of fighting monsters, the trio have made the choice to continue on in the family business, tracking down and taking out monsters that had been deemed too dangerous to be allowed to live. ⌜started from a spark⌟.

verse 006 : winx

arc 001 : cartoon based. a graduate of alfea college for fairies, bubbles is the fairy of electricity. ⌜come join the club⌟.

arc 002 : fate saga compliant. as an air fairy, bubbles attends alfea college in hopes of gaining better control over her magical abilities. ⌜so no glitter⌟.

verse 007 : dc

arc 001 : set in the dc universe. the girls were created as a part of project cadmus, were professor utonium worked before he stole the girls to provide them a better life than that of living in a lab. with a little bit of training, it was made clear that the girls could handle themselves and would not be reclaimed by cadmus. ⌜fighting crime⌟.

verse 008 : percy jackson

arc 001 : one of three demigod sisters to share the same father, bubbles buffy is the daughter of the celtic goddess clíodhna (read: cleena). she was around eight when she went off to camp avalon the first time, having survived a dullahan attack on the journey there. she still has a visible scar on her left shoulder blade from the attack. as a child of the celtic goddess of love and beauty, as well as queen of the banshees, buffy’s abilities in this verse are as follows: death sense via banshee wail, sonic scream, amokinesis, charmspeak, glamoring, enhanced beauty, fluency in celtic gaelic. ⌜olympians who⌟.

verse 009 : once upon a time

arc 001 : home world setting. bubbles and her sisters live in townsville, part of the larger world of fusion falls. ⌜not so fairytale life⌟.

arc 002 : storybrooke setting. cursed into a new life, bubbles utonium became buffy moore, a marine zoology student interning at storybrooke’s aquarium. ⌜ever ever after⌟.

verse 010 : game of thrones / house of the dragon

arc 001 : in the world of westeros, it is within the kingdom of the reach that she has found home. lady brienne of house crane of red lake, fondly nicknamed the little bird by those who know her best. this verse can be set at any point during game of thrones or house of the dragon, but is not book compliant. ⌜valar morghulis⌟.

verse 011 : harry potter (anti jkr) [au where hogwarts letters are received at 18]

arc 001 : set during her time at hogwarts where bubbles buffy is a hufflepuff. this can be set during marauders era, golden trio era, or next gen era. ⌜wingardium leviosa⌟.

arc 002 : following graduation from hogwarts, buffy goes on to become a magizoologist with a focus on aquatic magical creatures. his can be set during marauders era, golden trio era, or next gen era. ⌜lumos maxima⌟.

verse 012 : mortal instruments

arc 001 : a shadowhunter with the new york institute, buffy rosewood stands against those who do the world harm while also fighting for the rights of downworlders. this verse will be strictly show based, as i’ve only read the first book in the series. ⌜lex malla lex nulla⌟.

verse 013 : grimm

arc 001 : based on the nbc show, not fairytales by the brothers grimm. bubbles buffy is a grimm/wesen hybrid, her wesen half being murciélago. this means that in addition to her grimm abilities, she can woge and has a lethal sonic screech ability. ⌜bat out of hell⌟.

verse 014 : horror

arc 001 : set within the world of the scream franchise. bubbles buffy has no powers here. ⌜favorite scary movie⌟.

arc 001 : living as a witch in sunny california, bubbles buffy has the active power of sound manipulation, with the more secondary powers of omnilingualism and zoolingualism. ⌜power of three⌟.

arc 001 : part of a nomadic coven, bubbles buffy and her “sisters” were all turned by their adoptive father as a means of saving their lives. having been in the habit of mimicking vocal patterns and accents in life, she has gained the ability of perfect vocal mimicry in her vampiric one. ⌜extreme body glitter⌟.

arc 001 : one of many scientists among those living on the space station, professor utonium’s experiment was focused in creating life. a clear success, resulting in three healthy girls who have never known a life on earth. ⌜zetus lapetus⌟.

verse 018 : bridgerton / regency

arc 001 : a surprise to many, the utonium sisters are all entering into their debut seasons together, thanks to the eldest’s year abroad and the youngest’s pleas with their father. after all, they’d always done everything together, and with her skills as a social butterfly, bubbles buffy is sure to do well this season despite her youth. ⌜novel romance⌟.

verse 019 : monster high

arc 001 : mad scientist kid. more details to come. ⌜ghoul kids rule⌟.

verse 020 : pokemon

arc 001 : originating from the unova region, bubbles buffy is a mixed type trainer. her team consists of zeraora (boomer), galarian ponyta (sugar), grapploct (octi), mimikyu (babydoll), falinks (skittles), and noivern (echo). ⌜catch em all⌟.

verse 021 : stranger things

arc 001 : raised in hawkins lab as 020/twenty. her power is sound manipulation. more details to come. ⌜experiment on me⌟.
