Thoughts on 35: Birthdays in the Time of the Pandemic

The pandemic has taken T-Rex Cafe from me on my birthday.

It was a fledgling, two-year-run of a tradition but I honestly don’t give a shit. And not because I was ‘just’ there earlier this year for a much-needed dino/LEGO-themed catch-up with an out-of-town friend.

This would have been the year that the T-Rex Cafe tradition evolved into the Dinosaur World tradition (DID YOU SEE WHAT I JUST DID THERE?!) — Dinosaur World is an extraordinarily out-of-place Florida attraction found in a corner of the Sunshine State that’s closer to Tampa than Orlando. The Plant City (actual city name) location is great, because it might just be far enough outside the bubble of the Plastic City (not the actual city name) that it wouldn’t be suffocated to death by His Holy Mousiness.

Not that any of that matters.Dinosaur World is an open-air attraction with paths that weave through a foliage-dense park. It’s home to a single animatronic set-piece tucked away in a sad-looking museum that’s not winning any awards (the animatronics or the museum).

Please don’t think I’m underselling it. Dinosaur World is glorious.

It’s clear that the animatronics aren’t the star of the attraction — that designation goes to the massive dinosaur sculptures that litter the jurassic park. These dense, solid constructs have been fabricated across decades and it’s a joy going from a modern, somewhat realistic representation of a dinosaur to an older, derpy sculpture that just so happens to be the exact, anantomicaly-incorrect image you conjure when you find yourself thinking the words ‘Dinosaur World’.

Again, I am not bullshitting you even in the slightest: it is glorious.

The best part, by any measure of bestness, is the gift shop — and this is speaking as a dude who lives in Orlando metro, the global epicenter of that other pandemic afflicting the globe: gift shops. It’s so bad here that new strains of gift shops have evolved that no longer require a host attraction. In the Orlando area, you can find gift shops that are located at the exit of other gift shops.

Again, I am not bullshitting you even the slightest: the Dinosaur World gift shop bests all other gift shops with its tiny, useless clappers-not-slappers arms tied behind its back.

Generally speaking, I stand immune to senseless purchases of molded plastic that, generally, serve to only collect dust.

But in the Dinosaur World gift shop? I laugh in the face of budgets.

I’ll take this massive Spinosaurus. And that ill-fitting Dinosaur World cap. And that ridiculously amazing piece of framed lenticular art where the T-Rex foot LITERALLY LEAPS OUT OF THE PICTURE. Oh, and a couple of plush. Okay, sure, a few more plush for the niece and nephew, too.

This gift shop is big, unreasonably so. It has all the staples: dinosaur toys of every stripe, t-shirts, decorations, books, and even jewelry.

It. Is. Glorious.

I’m not going to Dinosaur World or its gift shop for my birthday, but on the other hand, I’m not going anywhere for my birthday. And I honestly don’t give a shit.

I’m personally in Week 4 of The Great American Quarantine but Florida as a whole only officially went into lockdown last Friday. This has created a fascinating dichotomy in the state — people like me who are old hats at this thing (yes, I know others have been in quarantine for long) and those who are just now experiencing life-stuck-at-home.

Here’s the thing: I’ve never felt stuck. I bought my house for a reason and I’m more than happy to work from it and avoid leaving it. Don’t get me wrong, my new-to-quarantiners, there IS an adjustment period. And depending on your life and who you are, maybe you never get out of the adjustment period.

Me, I usually take about two-to-three weeks to adjust to anything.

So as newcomers reach ‘peak quarantine’, I find my emotional self mostly equalized to pre-pandemic levels of dyspeptic misery and abject hopelessness, occasionally sidelined by the pure undiluted joy of creating a cool video or losing myself in a cathartic piece of writing.

I am not a ‘happy person’ and the mere notion abhors me. Not in respect to your own happiness, of course — you should be whatever flavor of happy you want, rock your-goddamn-happy socks off and go nuts. But me? That’s not my baseline and never was in 35 years.

Life can be a miserable shit show and some people just needed a pandemic to see it.

Those moments of pure bliss I sometimes get to enjoy? Here’s what comes next: I finish project — which is a postpartum shit show in itself — and then I put that moment of bliss online where, generally speaking, no one seems to care.

Okay, look, I know it sounds like I’m sitting here on my 35th birthday complaining that nobody pays any attention to my creative work, but I’m not. I’m sitting here I’m on my 35th birthday complaining that nobody pays any attention to my creative work AND FOR SOME REASON THIS STILL SENDS ME IN A FUCKING SPIRAL DECADES INTO THIS GAME probably because the spiral was immediately preceded — as mentioned — by that fleeting moment of actual bliss, a genuine happy distraction for the professional unhappy person.

Really, I’m not complaining. Just sharing a little bit the depressed psychosis I call home.

It’s just me, myself, and my abyss. That’s the title to an unfinished song I was writing for the ukulele. I’ll get around to it.

But here’s the point: for me (and all those millions like me — you know who you are) the abyss (*cough* MY abyss) is always there. Always has been. Old buddy, old chum. I’m not always in it and most days it’s not even a passing consideration …. but I know it’s ALWAYS there.

Kinda how the abyss works.

So I don’t know whether to laugh at or feel bad for all those happy people in quarantine who are crashing down and just now getting a good glimpse at the dyspeptic misery and abject hopelessness of the world.

For a lot of us, this gets worse. Maybe emotionally. Maybe physically. Maybe economically.

For some of us, it’s always been this bad. Maybe emotionally. Maybe physically. Maybe economically.

The advice from this professional unhappy person: figure out what brings you bliss, that thing you can lose yourself in, even if briefly, and commit. Be unapologetic. For me, it’s dinosaurs, animation, video editing, technology, and LEGO. If I can combine all those things, that’s a pretty happy distraction from the looming abyss. At least for a little while.

On the other hand, if you still have positivity exploding out of your asshole right now …. um, okay? Good for you? I don’t know if you’re stubbornly blind to reality or if we’re just wired that differently, but whatever. You do you, just don’t expect us unhappy people to get on your level. There aren’t enough spoons in the world for that shit.

A few more bits of advice from your future depressed quarantine avatar: fix your personal relationships and be selfish as shit. I’m 35 and twice-divorced, which means I’m lucky enough to be stuck at home right now with someone who understands every single beat of this post. I’m trapped inside with someone who adds to those moments of creative bliss, as opposed to being indifferent to them or — worse still — detracting from them.

Whatever your relationship issues, rip the fucking bandaid and deal with your shit because if you don’t, well, you’ll be quarantined with it. So sayeth the 35-year-old twice-divorced, professional unhappy Krumbine.

Life’s good. Sometimes. Mostly it’s a shit sandwich. But that’s okay, too. Because dinosaurs. And LEGO. And creating cool shit.

And donuts.

Yes, I think today would be a good day for donuts.

The finalists were selected from 633 nominees submitted by 236 companies. Eighteen judges, including toy and play experts, retailers, academics, and journalists, reviewed and ranked the products in categories relevant to their areas of expertise. The judges then participated in a discussion to determine the finalists in each category. They considered each product’s creativity, design, play value, and marketing.

The TOTY Awards gala is open only to toy industry professionals. Tickets for the event will be available for purchase on December 2; all TOTY proceeds are donated to The Toy Foundation, which partners with generous toy companies throughout the year to bring brand-new toys to children who are sick, at-risk, in foster care, impoverished, or otherwise in need.

Magic: The Gathering Animated Series Coming to Netflix

Wizards of the Coast has announced a partnership with both Netflix and the Russo brothers (Avengers: Endgame) to create a Magic: The Gathering animated series.

This series will expand on the stories of the Planeswalkers, Magic’s unique magic-wielding heroes and villains. The overarching plot will look at how they will contend with stakes that are larger than any one world can hold.

According to the Russo brothers:

“We have been huge fans and players of Magic: The Gathering for as long as it has been around, so being able to help bring these stories to life through animation is a true passion project for us.”

Isaac Krauss, CEO of Octopie, added:

“Working with Joe and Anthony, Wizards of the Coast, and Netflix on such a universally cherished brand is a real highlight for our studio. Our goal is to not only tell a compelling story leveraging Magic: The Gathering’s incredible body of work, but to also push the medium and perception of storytelling through animation. This series will cross the genres of suspenseful thriller, horror, and drama with deeply developed characters the likes of which are not often seen in animation.”

In addition to Joe and Anthony Russo, creative talent from, Batman: The Animated Series, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Agent Carter, Firefly, Ultimate Spider-Man, and The Lego Movies will also work on the series. Animation will be handled by Bardel Entertainment (Rick and Morty, Teen Titans Go!).

Apple announces its ‘Best of 2018’ lists across apps, games, music, podcasts and more

Apple today announced its Best of 2018 selections – its annual, editorial list of what it considers the best content across its App Store and iTunes, along with its top charts of the most downloaded apps and games fo the year. As in other years, Apple selected a “best” app and game for each platform, including iPhone, iPad, Apple TV and Mac. It also rounded-up several favorite Apple Watch apps, but didn’t award a winner.

The best app of 2018 on iPhone was the iPhone version of the popular Procreate drawing app for iPad, Procreate Pocket.

Meanwhile, the top iPad app was Froggipedia, an AR app that lets you virtually dissect a frog so you don’t have to actually dissect a frog.

Both apps showcase technologies Apple aims to promote. In Procreate Pocket’s case, it’s the iPhone companion to an Apple Pencil-powered app on iPad. On the iPhone, it instead uses 3D Touch support for painting with your finger. Froggipedia turns an Apple Pencil into the scalpel to dissect a virtual frog.

On Mac, the top app was image editor Pixelmator Pro, and top Apple TV app was the big-screened version of workout app Sweat, whose creator Kayla Itsines also showed up at WWDC this year to lead a special session.

The top games this year were: Donut County (iPhone), Gorogoa (iPad), The Gardens Between (Mac) and Alto’s Odyssey (Apple TV) – the latter which also won an Apple Design Award earlier this year.

Showcasing their somewhat secondary status, Apple Watch apps didn’t get a “best of” pick for app and game, but a small group got a shoutout from Apple as being “favorites.”

This includes: WaterMinder, Lifesum, 10% Happier, Carrot Weather, FunGolf GPS, Swing Tennis Tracker, Slopes, App in the Air, Overcast, and Just Press Record.

While its “Best of” selections were editorially chosen, Apple also unveiled its year-end “Top Charts” across iPhone and iPad, which were separated by both apps and games (free and paid).

These are the most downloaded app of 2018. The lists still show Facebook, YouTube, Google, and other entertainment apps dominating the top free charts.

In addition to the best content across categories, Apple this year also highlighted the most-read stories from the “Today” section on the App Store.

The revamped and more editorially-driven App Store launched over a year ago in September 2017, making this year the first full year of its existence.

The store is now not just a marketplace and search engine for apps, but also a place to read about the developers who create apps, their businesses, and learn other tips and tricks.

According to Apple, the top ten most-read stories included several on popular games, and a guide for parents on Snapchat, among others.

Balvin; Album of the Year: Golden Hour – Kacey Musgraves; Most Downloaded Podcast: The Daily; Best Book of the year: American Marriage; and Audiobook of the year: American Marriage.

Apple isn’t the only one with a year-end “Best of” list out now. Google Play also this week unveiled its own “Best of 2018” winners. Its list included the best app, Drops: Learn 31 new languages, and best game, PUBG Mobile. It introduced a “fan favorites” category as well, where users got to vote on their own favorite apps and games. Those winners included PUBG again, but for best app, they chose YouTube TV.

Upcoming June Releases

Alright everyone! It’s officially summer time for all of you who have recently escaped the confines of a school schedule, so let’s start talking about all the games you’ll soon have available to keep you busy as you pull 3 months’ worth of all-nighters and totally ruin your sleep scheduled. Normally, I post these on the first of the month, so you’ll notice the first couple of games are actually coming out TODAY.

The Elder Scrolls Online – Summerset (June 5th)

This first entry isn’t a full game, but it’s a wonderful place to get things started! For those of you who are fans of The Elder Scrolls Online, there is an enormous new world for you to explore! The Isle of Summerset has now opened its borders thanks to a decree by Queen Ayrenn. Exploring the homeland of the high elves opens new and exciting adventure opportunities, but it also brings in a lot of new features to the game in general. The Psijic Order plays an influential role in this new environment, so there are quite a few new powers and upgrades available to your character if you choose to join them. Also, you’ll be running around with your old pal, Raz, to complete missions throughout the gorgeous environment that is Summerset. The environment really is the best part about this expansion from what I’ve seen so far. The land of the high elves has a very diverse ecosystem ranging from seaside and beach areas to the high white towers of the city and down to dangerous underground caverns. Although I’ve not personally played this expansion yet, I’m very excited to get into some missions and explore this new land.

Vampyr (June 5th)

Also available today, we have Vampyr. This game takes an interesting look Vampiric lore as you, Jonathan Reid, wander through 1918 London. You start the game unsure of who you are and how you have become a vampire, but you struggle with choosing between the Hippocratic oath of your old life as a doctor and your new life as a bloodthirsty vampire. This game has a semi-open world concept and the potential to be a thrilling story. From what I’ve learned so far, it also seems to give you the freedom to play how you want with much of the fighting/killing being avoidable throughout the game. There are also four boroughs within the city of London that can be saved or destroyed based on how you play. I’ve seen gameplay footage of the first hour or so and the game seems to have a lot of cool mechanics to it as well as a story that immediately pulls at your heart strings in the opening moments of the game. I don’t know a lot about this game yet, but I’m excited to sink my teeth into it and give it a try!

Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn (June 5th)

This is an interesting entry as this game’s development was crowd funded and spearheaded by Shaq. The real, actual, living, breathing, Shaq of legend is involved in this game. Sometimes reality is crazy, guys. Now, this is not the first game Shaq has been involved in (the previous Shaq Fu game is considered the worst game of all time in some circles), so I’m a bit hesitant about this title. It’s a 3D side scrolling beat ‘em up game and it actually looks like it could be a lot of fun! Weirdly enough, Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn seems to have absolutely nothing to do with basketball, which makes it all that much more weird and wonderful that Shaq is involved. In the game, you play as Shaq as he travels around defeating ninjas with his Shaq Fu skills. The landscapes are beautiful and colorful which really adds to the whole experience of the game. Overall, I think this is going to be worth a shot and it could turn out to be a really fun game to spend some time on!

Jurassic World: Evolution (June 12th)

Now for a huge change of pace, we have Jurassic World: Evolution. This game has a very different feel to it than anything we’ve talked about so far. This game combines absolutely beautiful renderings of dinosaurs that we’ve seen in Jurassic Park and Jurassic World with a Roller Coaster Tycoon style park-building system. Your goal is to build a theme park full of exciting (and scary) dinosaurs to bring in all that cold hard cash from paying guests. Throughout the game, you have many different “influencer” characters who will give you different types of goals which you can choose to fulfill or ignore. For example, you may have a goal to release some dinosaurs into the crowd… you know… for science? You’ll have to weigh the pros and cons of this action and decide if that’s what’s best for your park. I think it has the potential to be a real hit for those of you who enjoy these types of games!

Lego The Incredibles (June 15th)

The Lego games have a reputation for being family friendly megastars in the videogame world. The upcoming release based on the Pixar movie The Incredibles looks like it will be another amazing addition to Lego’s gaming roster. I’ve seen some gameplay footage and it certainly has that signature Lego style and humor. Being a family of super heroes, there are lots of fun abilities and special moves for each character. For example, Elasti-Girl can stretch herself to interact with lots of cogs and wheels to solve puzzles or she can stretch between buildings to become a bridge for other characters. I always enjoy the games that Lego puts out and I’m going to be one of the first people in line for The Incredibles. I’m so excited to see what fun and funky mechanics they’ve been able to build into this new game!

The Lost Child (June 19th)

Generally, I’m not one to keep a lot of track of the RPG world, but this release has grabbed my attention recently. The Lost Child is a JRPG that takes place on modern day Tokyo, but not all is as it seems. There’s dark magic at work and it’s up to you to stop it! You’ll be battling through many different types of dungeons called “Layers” on your valiant quest. The “upgrade” system in this game, along with its turn based combat system, look absolutely amazing and make this game a must-have for any RPG fan. Although this normally isn’t the genre I tend to gravitate towards, this game has me considering sinking an obscene number of hours into it. It’s available on Switch, PS4, and PSVita, so I definitely recommend you keep an eye out for the release of this game!

Crash Remaster for Switch, PC, Xbox One (June 26th)

These last two entries are sort of honorable mentions. For those of you who don’t live the PlayStation life, the remaster of Crash Bandicoot is coming to Xbox, PC, and Switch! Whether you played the original games as a kid or not, this trilogy is a classic that would belong on ANY gamer’s favorites list, but especially if you have any interest in platformers. Obviously, it still has all the fun of the original game, but the graphics have been given a major revamp and Crash, Coco, and Cortex look better than ever! Unexpectedly, at least in my experience, this is also a fair challenging set of games. As a kid, I somehow remember being great at this game and now I’m pretty sure an actual child could surpass my so-called “skill”. Whether you’re looking for something fun and pretty or something nostalgic and challenging, this game is the answer! Check it out if you haven’t already played it on PlayStation last year.

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus on Switch (June 29th)

The port of Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus to switch should definitely be on your radar, especially if you’re one of those people who are upset with the new Black Ops 4 not including a single player campaign. This game has all the gritty battle, beautiful graphics, challenging levels, and fantastic story telling that you could ever dream of! Now that it’s on switch, you can even take all of that joy on the go. I’m interested to see how well the graphics of the original game will port over. We’ve all seen the horrifying disaster that was WWE 2K18 on switch… so hopefully Bethesda gets this right like they have with their other recent ports! No matter what console you’re on, if you haven’t yet taken the time to play this game, this is a perfect kick in the butt… er, reminder… to get you started!
