he bought dogwood farm while it was failing. a family unable to run it, running it into the ground, bleeding money and mana. he saw the potential, the leyline intersection under the fields and the earth sprites in the woods, hiding from those untouched by mother magick.
it took him a year to turn it around. to make it profitable. to grow all manner of things, to the orchards in the back field that no one believed would grow again, the soils parched and empty of minerals.
the roses and sunflowers he sold for oil and decoration. wheat and barley, hops and rapeseed. a lucrative business, aided only by his magick touch.
of course, that's all just for the money. his true passion lies in the visitors that come to his door in the gloom. the ones with the problems, the ones with the issues. a tincture here, a potion there, on good days they'll let him lay a curse.

18" snowfall, meet my 8-year anniversary with Dionysos. incense, Brotherhood wine, and the placing of the new mask at the shrine. read the Prayer for Discovery, passed around the tincture and wine glass, said thanks. Dogwood, Rocket, and Candela accompanied. swung by the shrine to Agdistis to say the couplet while we were out there as well. roughly 11:30 pm-midnight.
there is SO MUCH fucking snow. I'm impressed everybody was up for it.
everything in me is saying to hide, to work alone, and I'm pretty sure I need to push back against that. that's shame. shame is antithetical to Dionysos worship.
kisses to you, breaker of chains. shall we pick up where we left off?

For prompt day, Julian has a smudge of ink on his cheek and he hasn’t noticed.
(fluff, julian x you/julian x reader, sfw. very light spoilers for julian’s upright ending.)
Once a week, you closed the shop and went out foraging for inventory. Although you stocked many rare ingredients that could only been bought from traveling merchants, there were just as many herbs and powders and remedies that could be made from the plants surrounding Vesuvia, much of it not far from the city at all. Today had been busy. In the summer, the forest was full of growing things that might be used to make a poultice or a tincture, or a meal; you and Muriel needed every hour of sunlight you could get. Only when twilight descended did you return to the city, one basket tied to your back, the other balanced against your hip, both equally laden.
The lights were still on in the shop. Inside, you could see Julian through the beaded curtain in the card room. He had the end of a quill between his teeth, and he was staring at the parchment laid out on the table in front of him. As you approached, you caught a glimpse of what he was working on: inventory lists, Salim’s drawings, architectural renderings, maps of where exactly in the city the new aqueducts were going to be constructed. Julian didn’t even notice you approach; he ran his hand through his hair, eyes fixed on the work, mumbling to himself.
You placed the baskets carefully on one of the display cases, then went to him. When you entered, the beaded curtain rattled as you parted it, and Julian jumped in his seat.
A smile smoothed away his shock. “There you are,” he said, warmly. “I was starting to worry. The moon’s already risen.”
“I could say the same for you,” you replied, wryly, coming to stand beside him. Your hand smoothed over the drawings on the table. “Julian, it’s late. How long have you been working?”
“…Not too long,” Julian said, but it wasn’t very convincing. His eyes slid back to the work in front of him, then he added, darkly, “Or not long enough, anyway. These plans aren’t going to finish themselves, and I promised Nadia I’d have them in her hands before we left at the end of the week.”
You made a noncommittal noise. It would be inconvenient, if Julian wasn’t able to finish the work he’d promised before the two of you left town, but you thought Nadia would like it far less if Julian worked himself to death trying to hand over the work on time. Releasing the paper, you brought your hand instead to Julian’s shoulder and squeezed it. The night was warm; even with the window open and the breeze coming in off the ocean, he was sweating through his clothes.
“There was a lot of good stuff in the forest today,” you say, abruptly changing tactics. “For the shop, but for the kitchen, too. Muriel has really sharp eyes. Look at all the different berries we found…”
Most of them are still in the basket, but you’d stashed a few in the loose pockets of your apron, so that you could snack on them as you walked back to the shop. You pulled a few out now. They shone like little jewels, all sorts of colors, summer’s bounty: corbezzoli, nespoles, elder-, dogwood-, and buckthorn berries.
“Try one?” you ask, picking out one of the plumpest looking berries and holding it out to him.
Julian leaned forward, opened his mouth invitingly so that you could place the berry, gently, on his tongue. He closed his mouth, chewed once, then his eyes rolled back in his head; he groaned obscenely around the fruit, closing his eyes. “Mmm. That is really good.”
It was, but not quite good enough for one berry to justify that reaction. You frowned, playing with the hairs on the back of his neck. “Have you eaten at all today?”
Julian scoffed. “Of course.” But then his brow furrowed, and he corrected himself. “Maybe. I mean, I must have…”
That almost surely meant he hadn’t. Knowing Julian, he’d probably posted up down here as soon as you’d walked through the door, and hadn’t moved from the spot all day—or, he’d only moved to make himself more coffee, which (you’d convinced him by now) did not count as eating. His sleeves were rolled to his elbows; his forearms were smeared with ink from pressing up against the paper all day. Some of it had even found its way to his face, just below the corner of his mouth.
“You’ve got ink on your face.”
“I’ve what?”
You licked your thumb, then gently took his chin in your hand, tilting it up. The warm glow of the shops light shone beautifully on the planes of his face. Gently, you ran the wet pad of your thumb against his chin, wearing away the ink until the skin was unmarked. “Better,” you said, with a satisfied smile, then swooped down to press a kiss to his chin in the spot you’d just wiped clean.
Distracted and determined to keep at his work though he may have been, Julian didn’t let the kiss end there; he tilted his head back to kiss you properly, the tip of his nose brushing against yours. It wasn’t particularly deep, or passionate, just a soft and tender hello; one of your favorite kinds of kisses, the kind Julian sighs into, the one he always greets you with at the end of the day when you find each other again. He mumbled against your mouth, warm and content:
“Hello, darling.”
“Hello, Julian,” you replied, stroking his cheek as you pull back. “Take a break? I know you want to get this done, but it’s going to be hard to do that on an empty stomach. Let’s go down to the Rowdy Raven, get a meal.” You know he won’t be able to relax until he gets out of the house; his hands will be itching to get back to work if you stay here, where the papers are all so close.
“Dangling temptations in front of me,” he said, a softly mumbled accusation, even as he stares dreamily into your face. “I’d kill for a cold tankard of ale right now. It’s sweltering.”
“You don’t need to kill for it,” you tease him, bending to press one last kiss to his forehead. “Come on. Barth will be happy to see you. We haven’t been down there in awhile, and I’m sure the band is missing their best vile player.”
Julian takes your hand in his—the same one that cleaned his face—and answers your kiss with one of his own, his lips brushing gently against the fingers that cleaned the ink from his face. “Alright. I’ll go. But not for Barth,” he added, looking up at you, “and not for the band.”
It’s clear what he means—he’s doing it for you—but you can’t resist the chance to tease him. And anyway, he really shouldn’t need you to tell him that he ought to eat, to take care of himself. No matter; you’ll get there one day. Being together makes the both of you better. Julian makes you brave, funny, happy, bright….
“You’re right,” you say, solemn and serious. “We’re doing it for your stomach. Now get out of that chair and let’s get going, before you waste away.”

How to Cast a Jar Spell: Witchcraft for Beginners
Jar spells, also known as bottle spells or container spells, are an old form of folk magic. While this form of magic is mostly found in cursing and curse-breaking, it’s not just for baneful magic. The Hoodoo ‘honey jar spell,’ for example, is common in love magic. The jar spell is versatile overall and can be custom-designed for a variety of needs.Note: If you prefer to use magical timing, you might look up the most effective day, and planetary hour to lend power to your spell. Here’s how to design and cast a jar spell. How to Cast a Jar or Bottle Spell in 7 Steps:
Define Your Intent
Select a Container
Choose Your Jar's Contents
Fill Your Jar
Seal Your Jar
Meditate on Your Intent
Finish Your Spell
Step 1: Define Your Intent
The first and most logical step in a jar spell is to define your intent. Your intent is what everything in your spell will revolve around. As per usual with magic, your intent should be:
Specific: Focus on precise goals (i.e. no wishing, no generalizing, no multi-purpose spells for 12 different things).
Realistic: Make sure those goals are attainable (no Dungeons & Dragons or Harry Potter fantasy stuff).
Ethical: I'm not going to say what is or isn't ethical, but you should certainly consider your spiritual ethics and think about the consequences of your actions.
Once your intent is determined, you can begin to design your jar spell—namely, what kind of things you need to put into it to achieve your goal.
Step 2: Choose a Container for Your Jar Spell
Basically, any kind of container can be used for a spell. I have to admit up front that I’m not entirely comfortable using containers made of plastic, but opinions vary on its effectiveness. I prefer glass, though people use clay and other materials. As long as it has no cracks and a tight-fitting lid or cork, you’re golden.
To find a suitable bottle, scrounge around the house or at thrift shops. Consider using anything from mason jars, baby food jars, and mayo or pickle jars to old salad and oil bottles.
Note: Make sure you cleanse and consecrate the container you’re going to use, as well as all the items you plan to fill it with.
Paint Your Jar (Optional) If you want, you can paint your jar in a color that corresponds with your intent or with symbols and images. This is not necessary, but any little help can give you a boost—plus, it keeps anyone who might stumble upon your jar from seeing the contents.
Step 3: Choose Your Jar Spell Contents
Deciding on the contents is basically the ‘meat’ of this magical working. While there is no limit to what you can choose to include, it’s important to select things that will help you work toward your ultimate magical goal. I like to choose things from the following categories:
A Personal Item
A photograph, hair, nail clippings, blood or other personal item is crucial to your spell. You could also use a name written on paper. This should be of the person you are casting the spell on—so if you’re casting the spell for yourself, you’d use your own picture, item or name. If casting the spell for a friend or on someone else (such as a spell to get a bully to leave you alone), you would use their photo, name or item.
Written Intent or Prayer
There is a lot of power in words, so I always find it helpful to write my intent on something and slip it into the jar. If you are seeking the aid of a deity in your jar spell, you can write a note to them asking for their assistance.
Liquids
Generally, the bottle should contain some liquid, but which liquid you choose depends on your intent.
Urine is used for protection jars and jars to break a curse, but can also be used for manipulative spells over others.
Vinegar is used to curse or harm others or to ‘spoil’ something. Safety note: vinegar jars can explode—so don’t fill it to the top, and keep the jar wrapped in cloth or towels (unless you’re burying it).
Honey, sugar water or some kind of nectar is used when you want to compel someone or something. This is because if you were seeking to make friends, to be more persuasive, to soothe over hurt feelings, etc., you’d want to ‘sweeten’ their disposition.
Ammonia is used for ‘cleansing’, when you want to banish negativity or malevolent entities, or when you wish to start anew with a ‘clean slate’. Safety note: never burn candles on ammonia and do not place ammonia jars near heat, as it can be explosive and flammable.
Tinctures, infusions, oils, etc. can be used for a multitude of purposes, such as blessings for health or prosperity and the like. Naturally, you should choose something based on your intent—for example, a money spell might include a tincture, infusion or oil made from money-drawing herbs like cinnamon or mint.
Water can be used, but I don’t really recommend plain water. At the very least, you can make an herbal infusion with it to give it more of a boost. I personally think heavily salted and blessed water can be good for purification purposes, but beyond that, I would avoid plain tap water.
Solids
Like with liquids, there are different types of solids that you can choose from based on your intent. You can be pretty creative with this! Here are a few examples:
To break a curse, jar spells usually include items like rusty nails and glass shards.
To break up a couple, the caster might add some cat hair and some dog hair to the mix—to make the people fight like ‘cats and dogs’ (again, though, think about your ethics!).
Heart-shaped glitter or confetti might go into a jar spell to draw love. You might even tie a ribbon around the whole jar to hold on to love, or to bind someone.
In a money-related jar spell, you might include some coins (preferably with the year of your birth printed on them).
If I wanted to break writer’s block, I might make a jar spell with a small pencil and roll of paper wrapped around it.
Herbs and Crystals
Two items that are both magically powerful and easy to come by are crystals and herbs. You can find a variety of them anywhere, and they are able to carry the energy that you’ll want to put into your spell. Below, I include a quick reference chart for herbs and crystals that you can refer to if you’re new to working with them.
That said, I highly recommend studying up and familiarizing yourself with some basic herbs and/or crystals you might have access to (my chart only scratches the surface). The more you work with herbs and crystals and get a feel for them, the more skilled you will become at spellcraft.
At the end of the day, just use your noggin and think of things that give off the kind of energy you’re interested in raising. They'll be even better for your spell if they're personally meaningful to you (vs. only using items that are commonly associated with your goal).
Note: Remember, just as you cleansed and consecrated your spell jar, so you must do with the items that you plan to fill it with. If the objects you have chosen are not spiritually clean (i.e. on an energy level), your spell will be less likely to help you attain your goal.
What Crystals and Herbs to Use for Spells
Banishing: obsidian, jet, black tourmaline, smokey quartz, clove, dragon's blood, garlic, hot pepper
Binding: jet, agrimony, knotweed, spiderwort, witch hazel
Communication: sodalite, tiger eye, turquoise, mint, orris root
Curse-Breaking: onyx, clear quartz, selenite, angelica, bloodroot, boneset, mandrake, salt, sage, rue
Fertility: agate, emerald, garnet, malachite, peridot, apple, cucumber, fig, ivy
Health: agate, amethyst, jade, sunstone, coriander, dogwood, eucalyptus, galangal root, ginger, rosemary, sage, thyme
Intellect: aventurine, flourite, benzoin, dittany of Crete, nugmeg, rosemary,
Love: amber, calcite, copper emerald, lapis lazuli, moonstone, rose quartz, Adam & Eve root, apple, basil, beet, catnip, clove, laurel, lavender, marjoram, rose
Money: gold, malachite, moss agate, pearl, cinnamon, ginger, orange, patchouly, vervain
Peace: amazonite, blue lace agate, rhodocrosite, silver, cumin, lavender, violet
Productivity: fuschite, gold, hematite, ruby, allspice, oregano, vanilla
Protection: amber, carnelian, citrine, malachite, petrified wood, angelica, cypress, frankincense, mugwort, sandalwood, wormwood
Psychic Abilities: lolite, jet, malachite, moonstone, quartz, turquoise, silver, acacia, gardenia, mugwort, tuberose, yarrow
Relationships: moss agate, pearl, peridot, rhodocrosite, sapphire, turquoise, pansy, rose, valerian
Step 4: Fill Your Jar
After having grounded and centered yourself, pick up one item at a time (or place it on your pentacle) and charge it. Charging empowers the item with your personal intent while stirring and stimulating the item’s own natural energy that you’re trying to tap into.
Note: You do not need to cast a circle for this spell, but if you wish to do it within a ritual circle, you may. If you wish, you may also invoke a deity for assistance.
As you add items to your jar, chant to raise power. For example, while filling your jar, you might say something such as, "By the power of Earth, Air, Fire and Water; By the Power of the sun, moon and stars; With the blessings of the Goddess Aphrodite, I charge you, rose quartz, to attract love to me."
Words of Power
When I prepare a spell, I always like to plan a chant to say while I’m casting it. Chanting is a great way to raise energy. You can find a chant in a book or online, or you can make up your own. It doesn’t have to be Shakespeare to be effective. Something simple works just fine, like:
Money, money, come to me;
Help me pay these bills I see.
As long as it suits the occasion and is meaningful to you, it’ll work.
Rhythm and rhyming can help you memorize it quickly before you start, and then you can really get into it like a mantra when you’re casting. By letting it spill from your lips effortlessly, it bypasses that conscious part of your brain and taps into your source of power—that part of the mind that sends the energy toward your goal.
Step 5: Seal Your Jar
When you’re finished filling your jar, you can seal it right away (and then burn a candle on it if desired), or you can burn a candle in the open mouth of the jar and seal it that way.
Note: Candles are not necessary in jar spells, but I find it adds yet another boost of power if you combine it with candle magic. If you choose to incorporate a candle into your jar spell, find one of the appropriate color and dress it (see the article above for more details) before burning it in the mouth of the jar or on top of the sealed jar, letting all the wax melt down. You can burn multiple candles on a jar over a course of time for an ongoing project.
Step 6: Meditate on Your Intent
Meditate on having acquired your goal. Don’t envision yourself wanting your goal, or you leave yourself in a perpetual state of wanting; envision yourself having your goal. What will life be like, how will you feel, when it is done?
Hold onto your visualization for about 20 minutes, or as long as you can.
Step 7: What to Do With Your Spell Jar Now?
There are a few different options now that you’ve cast your jar spell. Basically, you can bury it, hide it, toss it in water, keep it on your altar, or dismantle it. Which you choose depends on what you’re trying to accomplish.
Bury the jar if . . .
You are seeking permanent protection or to break or repel a curse. This will stand sentry on your property and protect you (or on the property of the person for whom you cast the jar spell). If you don’t have land of your own, you can bury it in a flower pot of soil left by your doorstep.
You want your jar to be a ‘magnet’ of sorts to continue to draw things to you (attention, health, wealth, etc.). Bury it on your property or the property of the person you’re casting for and be done with it.
You are trying to rid yourself of something (or rid the person you’re casting for of something), like a disease or bad habit. Bury the jar at a crossroads, don’t look back, and (ideally) never return.
You are casting a spell on another unbeknownst to them (but remember your ethics!). Bury it on their property—ideally somewhere they cross over every day, like beneath their doorstep.
Note: If you were doing some major cursing to harm another, you could bury it in a graveyard (not something I personally recommend, by the way; but I’m just passing on the information).
Hide the jar if . . .
You want to bury it, but burying it is not an option. Hey, I am originally from New York City—I understand you can’t bury a jar easily when you live in an apartment. If this is the case, just hide it deep in the home somewhere—inside a wall, in the junk closet, or wherever it won’t be disturbed.
You plan on dismantling it sometime in the future, which will disengage the spell when done properly.
Toss the jar in water if . . . *
Using it to banish or exorcise any entities, or if you are working with any ‘questionable’ entities (again, not recommended, just passing on the information). Running natural water sources will purify it and protect you from their return.
It’s successfully removed a curse, a disease, a bad habit, etc.; this is an alternative to burying it at a crossroad. Keep in mind you could be fined for littering if you’re just tossing stuff into local waters.
*Tip: If it floats, puncture the cap with a hole or tie it to a weight.
Keep the jar on your altar if . . .
. . . your goal is an ongoing one that you’d like to keep working on. You can continue to burn candles over the mouth of the jar or shake it while saying your chant to keep it working for you.
Alternatively, if you have a shrine to your God/dess and sought their aid, you can keep it there. Again, shake it occasionally while chanting to keep the power going.
This is actually a good option for spells that are going to require a great deal of time and effort—for example, if you were to do a jar spell to help you pass tests, you might keep it on your altar all through college. You might repeat your chant, burn a candle or shake it the night before exams. This is better than making a new spell for every exam.
Dismantle the jar if . . .
. . . the spell's power is no longer necessary and you’d like the effects to stop. For example, if you cast a jar spell to attract love, you might have had many interests for a while. Now, you are getting married and you don’t want to attract any more potential lovers. So you would dismantle the spell.
To do this, remove the contents and bury them at a crossroads or into running water, clean the container and dispose of it. With a proper cleansing, you could re-use it.
Warning: It’s not generally a good idea to dismantle a jar used for cursing or hexing, or one for breaking a curse or hex, unless you really know what you’re doing. Just bury it at the crossroads or in running water and be done with it.
Do Not Burn Your Spell Jar
One thing I do not recommend is throwing it into a fire, as is mentioned in some sources. This was, in particular, a method of cursing and curse-breaking; the Witch would throw the jar into the fire and when it burst, it meant the curse was working (torturing the person it is cast on) or it meant the curse you were lifting has broken.
This is not necessary, and not a safe option at all. However, if you do dismantle a jar spell and have some components left over (ribbon, paper, etc.), you could burn those items after it’s dismantled if you have a safe means of doing so.

Native Status: Eastern North America ; Native
Mature Size: Height 15′ - 30′ | Spread 15′ - 30′
Habitat / Conditions: Native from Maine to southern Ontario to Illinois to Kansas south to Florida, Texas and Mexico. Easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Prefers moist, organically rich, acidic soils in part shade. Benefits from a 2-4” mulch which will help keep roots cool and moist in summer.
Hardiness Zone: 5 - 9
Leaf Color: Green –> Burgundy
Flower Color / Bloom Time: White | April - May
Medicinal Properties: Flowering dogwood was employed medicinally by a number of native North American Indian tribes who valued it especially for its astringent and anti-periodic properties. It is little used in modern herbalism.
The dried root-bark is anti-periodic, astringent, diaphoretic, mildly stimulant and tonic. The flowers are said to have similar properties. A tea or tincture of the astringent root bark has been used as a quinine substitute to treat malaria and also in the treatment of chronic diarrhea. The bark has also been used as a poultice on external ulcers, wounds etc. The glycoside "cornin" found in the bark has astringent properties. The inner bark was boiled and the tea drunk to reduce fevers and to restore a lost voice. It was often used in the form of a bath. The fruits are used as a bitter digestive tonic. A tincture of them has been used to restore tone to the stomach in cases of alcoholism.
A compound infusion of the bark and the root has been used in the treatment of various childhood diseases such as measles and worms. [Historic - unproven]

Natural Treatments for Bursitis
Tumblr media
Bursitis is an inflammation of a bursa, a small structure inside every joint that helps to lubricate and cushion it.
Usually bursitis occurs in the larger joints, such as the shoulder, hip, knee, or elbow. It can happen once or can recur over time.
Without seeing your health care provider, you usually can't easily tell the difference between bursitis and pain caused by a strain or arthritis.
Signs and Symptoms
* Pain in the joint that gets worse when you move the joint (the pain may come all at once or develop gradually over time) * Swelling * Redness * Fever and warm joint area (if an infection is present)
Nutrition
Include in your diet anti-inflammatory oils such as those found in cold-water fish, nuts, and seeds. The following supplements may help.
* Glucosamine sulfate (500 mg two or three times a day), for connective tissue support * Omega-3 oils (1,000 mg two or three times a day), such as flaxseed oil, as an anti-inflammatory agent * Vitamin C with flavonoids (250 to 500 mg two times a day), for connective tissue repair * Proteolytic enzymes such as bromelain (250 mg twice a day), to reduce inflammation * Flavonoids and oral digestive enzymes for inflammation
Herbs
Herbs are generally a safe way to strengthen and tone the body's systems. As with any therapy, it is important to work with your provider on getting your problem diagnosed before you start any treatment. Herbs may be used as dried extracts (capsules, powders, teas), glycerites (glycerine extracts), or tinctures (alcohol extracts).
Unless otherwise indicated, teas should be made with 1 tsp. herb per cup of hot water. Steep covered 5 to 10 minutes for leaf or flowers, and 10 to 20 minutes for roots. Drink 2 to 4 cups per day. Tinctures may be used alone or in combination as noted.
* Herbs that reduce swelling include meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria), white willow (Salix alba), Jamaica dogwood (Piscidia piscipula), and turmeric (Curcuma longa). A tincture of one, or a combination of these, may be taken at 15 drops every 15 minutes up to four doses for acute pain relief, or 30 drops four times per day for general pain relief. Turmeric increases the effects of bromelain.
* For bursitis with muscle spasm, add valerian (Valeriana officinalis) .
* For chronic bursitis, add hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna).
Homeopathy
Some of the most common remedies are listed below. Usually, the dose is 3 to 5 pellets of a 12X to 30C remedy every one to four hours.
* Arnica gel applied topically (to the skin) as directed gives excellent short-term pain relief. * Arnica for bursitis occuring after an injury to the joint * Ruta graveolons for rheumatic pains in the joint * Bellis perennis for injury with a great deal of bruising * Rhus toxicodendron for pain that gets better with movement * “Traumeel” injections as an alternative to corticosteroids
Joint, muscles & connective tissue support
Helps comfort sore joints and muscles
Supports healthy cartilage and mobility
Promotes healthy inflammation management
Stage 1: Support cartilage function
Cartilage is the soft tissue padding between all joints and bones which acts like a shock absorber. After years of wear and tear – the amount of cartilage between joints can decline – and that can lead to stiff and painful joints. Not Just Joints contains a host of cartilage supporting nutrients including:
Glucosamine – to support healthy fluid levels around joints
Chondroitin – to help support the immune system in response to cartilage damage
Not Just Joints contains a broad range of synergistic ingredients that work together to support cartilage growth and function.
Stage 2: Supports healthy inflammation management
When cartilage erodes over an extended period of time, the prolonged immune response could lead to chronic inflammation, potentially triggering further conditions.
Cartilage has no blood supply, in fact it depends on a clean supply of synovial fluid for nutrients to travel. Not Just Joints supports the body’s healthy inflammation management process (also called immunomodulation) with a multi-faceted approach.
Stage 3: Manage the cycle of cartilage destruction
Chronic inflammation in the synovial membrane can trigger the production of more inflammatory compounds, which travel into the synovial fluid and then back into cartilage. This may cause further cartilage destruction – and even more chronic inflammation, becoming a vicious painful cycle.
Not Just Joints contains specialized natural agents that are rarely found in other natural joint formulas
Stage 4: Healthy joints and cartilage reduces the risk of “Bone-on-Bone” scraping
As cartilage deteriorates – you lose the protective space between bones – and that bone-on-bone scraping can trigger inflammation, pain and reduced mobility.
Not Just Joints helps to support:
The body’s ability to manage cartilage and glutathione depletion
Mobility
Healthy inflammation management
Comfort sore joints
Immune function and skin health

How to Identify My Tree by Bark and by Leaves?
Trees are an important part of our environment. They are the largest plants on the planet, and they provide us with a system of releasing oxygen into our atmosphere and storing carbon. But could identify the tree you have in your backyard?
The Value of Trees
Trees act as natural filters and absorb air pollution and dust. The shade trees provide helps protect us from harmful solar radiation. Another added benefit of trees is the reduction of noise their presence provides.  They can provide wind-resistance and cooler air because their leaves reflect heat away from the ground.  The stature of trees allows them to decrease and prevent soil erosion and flooding.
Many trees that commonly grow in North America and parts of Europe possess medicinal benefits. Fall and winter time is the perfect time to extract roots, bark and twigs for medicinal purposes. People have made tinctures, salves and poultices from these tree parts to treat a variety of diseases.
The Two Major Tree Classifications
Evergreen means a tree doesn’t lose its leaves during the course of the winter. Most people think of evergreen trees as pine and Christmas trees because evergreen trees thrive in wintry weather and dry weather. Although most evergreen trees are coniferous, there are some coniferous trees like larches that do lose their leaves. Evergreen is the opposite of Deciduous.
Deciduous trees, on the other hand, lose their leaves at the end of the growing season and grows them back again typically in the spring. “Deciduous” is an adjective and means that the plant so described sheds its leaves at the end of the growing season. These are the trees that provide elegant foliage when the trees turn red, orange and yellow during the Fall season. However, there are some deciduous trees (some broadleaf trees like the live oak trees) that do not lose their leaves and keep them all year.  You can think of deciduous as being the opposite of evergreen.
How to Identify Tree by Leaves
Evergreen/Coniferous Trees:
When a tree has foliage that are needles or clusters of needles, those trees are most likely a coniferous evergreen.
Single Needles:  Needles on a lot of evergreen trees will be attached to a twig. They may look like pegs (spruce), cups (fir) or petioles or leaf stalks (hemlock, bald cypress and Douglas fir). Trees in this subcategory of evergreen trees are usually, spruces, firs, cypress or hemlocks.
Cluster/Bundle Needles:  The leaf clusters or bundles found on pine trees and larches are referred to as fascicles. The number of adult needles per fascicle helps to differentiate between pines and larches.
For example, you can expect most pine species to have 2 to 5 needles per fascicle. Larches will have multiple clusters of needles. Keep in mind that larches do shed needles every year, and the needles will eventually turn yellow.
Deciduous trees:
When identifying leaves on deciduous trees, start by looking at how the leaves are arranged on the stem. Some leaves grow in an alternating pattern along the stem, and some leaves grow in pairs opposite each other along the stem.
Next, look at the structure of the leaves. All leaves have two main sections: the petiole and lamina. The Petiole is the stalk that attaches the lamina to the stem. The lamina is the leaf blade and the flat part where photosynthesis happens. Leaves with an undivided blade are called simple leaves. Leaves that form a collection of leaflets are called compound leaf.
Compound leaves can be sub-classified based on how the leaflets are arranged. Palmately compound leaves are leaflets that extend directly from the end of the petiole. They spread out (in clusters of three or more) and look like fingers on the palm of a hand. Pinnately compound leaves have leaflets that extend from a vein that connects to the petiole. These leaflets are in an opposite arrangement on the petiole, and they may be evenly or oddly paired.
By Leaf Arrangement: Alternate and Opposite Patterns
Alternate leaves are situated between each other on opposite sides of the stem. These leaves tend to grow in a staggered, alternating pattern.
Examples: Hawthorn, Sycamore, Oak, Sassafras, Mulberry, and Dogwood.
Opposite leaves (whether simple or compound) are located directly across from one another on the same stem. They also tend to grow in pairs on the stem.
Examples: Ash, Maple, and Olive.
By Leaf Structure: Simple and Compound Leaves
A simple tree leaf has one blade attached to the stalk.
Examples: Maple, Sycamore, Sweet Gum, and Tulip.
In a compound leaf, the leaf is divided into leaflets that are attached to a middle vein by their own stalks. If compound leaves are alternate in form and look like a feather, they are called pinnately compound leaves. Pinnately compound leaves are divided into another subcategory: odd (number of leaflets is odd), twice-pinnate or bipinnate (which means the leaflets are themselves divided into smaller leaflets) and even (which means there is an even number of leaflets on the twig.
Examples: Hickory, Walnut, and Locust.
Palmate: As stated earlier, the shape of the leaves looks like the palm of a hand (or like a fan).
Examples: Maple and Horse Chestnut.
How to Identify Tree by Bark
In case you were wondering how to identify your trees when all the leaves are gone, you can always look at the tree’s bark. What you will discover is the bark of trees has a unique pattern—kind of life a fingerprint. Therefore, you will expect no two bark patterns are exactly alike. Even though some tree species have similar types of bark, they all still have their own unique identity.  Because of this, you can consider identifying trees by bark to be like other types of tree identification options. All you have to do is begin with a broad category of types of tree bark and then look at other characteristics. That way, you will be able to tell slight differences in bark types that look similar.
Scaly: These are trees that have square-like bark pieces that overlap each other. Sitka and Blue spruce trees have very scaly bark. Trees that have scaly bark are shagbark hickory, strawberry tree, maple and river birch. This is the best maple tree bark identification characteristic you can find out there.
Furrowed:  This bark is the most common type of bark out there, and this is what most people think of when you talk about tree bark. Trees in this category will have chunky vertical strips of bark that have deep grooves. Trees with this type of bark are hemlocks, Redwoods and Doug-firs.
Papery: Trees with this type of bark refers that looks like white paper. It’s easy to peel, and it’s easy to tear off in large pieces. It’s also very thin.  You can see this type of bark on the Red Alder in the Pacific Norwest and on the White birch in the Northeast.
Smooth: Trees with this type of bark often look like they don’t have bark.  Most times, you will see small plates of bark on the tree that looks a lot like camouflage. The color of smooth bark trees is usually a light tan or whitish color. Aspens and sycamores are examples of the types of trees that have smooth bark.
  Best Tree Identification Apps Around
There are many tree identification apps out there, but not all of them are worth the download or investment. Some apps allow users to upload tree identification pictures and other details to help determine what type of tree it is. Here are a few identification apps that you can use with your smartphones.
  Woodland Trust Tree Identification App
This app is a great tree identification by bark app because it allows you to identify the tree using any of its parts. This app was designed by Woodland Trust and is good for Android and IOS. This company was established in 1972. The primary objective of this organization is to protect the existing woodlands, restore older woodlands that have been in ruins and create new woodland territories.  As a tree identification app, the Woodland Trust Tree Identification App is capable of identifying the 50 tree and shrub species native to the UK, and it can also help with identifying non-native trees.
  Virginia Tech Tree ID
Virginia Tech’s tree identification app is by far a popular app that just about everyone interested in studying trees has discovered. Their extensive dendrology has led to a vast collection of tree identification pictures. Their tree-identification app allows you to retrieve their extensive data right on your smartphone (both Android and IOS)
This app is free, and it has a lot of filters you can apply to narrow your search. That way, your search goes from species-specific to geographical location-specific. There is also a feature called “Dr. Dendro” that will help you narrow your search even further.
  LeafSnap
LeafSnap is a culmination of field guides that provides educational information about trees.  The app is for IOS only, and it only includes a database of trees found in Northeastern United States. The app is maintained by many scientists, developers and researchers from the Smithsonian Institution, Columbia University and the University of Maryland.
Users get foundational tree identification information along with photos of a variety of species.  The feature that really makes this app unique is the ability of the user to take an image of the tree the user wants identified (called the LeafSnap feature). The feature uploads the image and uses a sophisticated algorithm to recognize the species of the tree.
The app has an interactive component that will collect your tree identification information and send it globally to professional scientists. These scientists will use this information to help them understand how various species are functioning in real-time.
  Botany Buddy
Botany Buddy is a free, interactive plant information app that is for IOS users and for other Apple devices. It has a 1,300-species database that gives information on a variety of native and non-native plants and trees. No internet access is needed because the database is downloaded. Unlike some other apps, Botany Buddy does not require users to be connected to the internet to access the database.
Tree Id – British Trees by Sunbird Images
Those looking for a great app to identify the native (and naturalised) trees found in the British Isles will love this app. The database is created by reputable ecologists. No internet connection is needed for this app because the database is downloaded when you buy the app.
Identifying trees is a viable part of forestry. Hopefully, this guide has given you more insight on the topic of study that helps us keep our woodlands populated, our air cleaner, our landscapes beautiful, our houses built and our yards cosy.

Online shopping from a great selection at Alchemist Alley Store. Passionflower – Western Clinical Formulas Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) is a beautiful flowering vine native to the Americas. It was a popular remedy for wounds and bruises among the FIrst Nations people of the Eastern United States for centuries due to it’s anti-inflammatory properties. Currently, passionflower is more often used as a sedative, anti-spasmodic and anxiety reducer in Western formulas. The formula that passionflower plays a starring role in is for sleep. The tincture is often made with alcohol menstruum such as vodka or gin or brandy for home use. It is made either with fresh vine at the budding stage or with some dry added to strengthen it’s potency. This plant has a musky odor that does not transfer into most tinctures unless they are infused for more than a few months. It is easily dried and added to tea blends or capsule formulas or made into syrups. Passionflower blends well with other herbs for insomnia. Noted herbalist David Winston, wrote in his book Herbal Therapeutics: Specific Indications for Herbs and Herbal Formulas, that passionflower is “…useful for anxiety, insomnia, nervous or occipital headaches, neuralgia, teething children, muscle/nerve pain, facial tics, pelvic and spasmodic pain.” With this broad reach, it is clear why passionflower is so popular with western herbalists for nerve related issues. It is commonly combined with valerian, hops, skullcap, milky oats, chamomile, kava kava, Jamacian dogwood and crampbark. Depending on the formula, it can be combine successfully with hawthorn or motherwort for anxiety that elevates blood pressure. Dosage can vary depending on the formula. It is considered a high dose herb. Even in its most potent form, a single plant tincture, can be safely taken at 30 to 100 mg (depending on body weight) per day. Passionflower, unlike other sedatives does not have a history of making the patient groggy the morning following its dose. This makes it a safer and thus, preferred herb for use of a wide spectrum of patient ages and conditions. As with any sedative, it is important to use it responsibly. Passionflower is best for short term use. The need for long term use for sleeplessness should be accompanied by other therapies to respond to the root cause of the difficulty in falling asleep. Counter-indications: Lobelia is counter-indicated for use with prescription sedatives such as pentobarbital, phenobarbital, secobarbital , clonazepam, lorazepam, or zolpidem. Common side effects can include nausea, dizziness or sleepiness. Discontinue use of this and other herbal sedatives two weeks before undergoing surgery as it will increase the effectiveness of anesthesia. As always, do not take passionflower if you are pregnant or breast feeding without first consulting with a qualified healthcare practitioner. #AlchemistAlley #HolisticWellnessSpecialists #DrBowe #DrRacquel #Herb #Health #Healer #HealthIsWealth #Metaphysical #MetaphysicalHerbalist #newage #growth #CBD
