greetings all knowing slavghoul…
i’m wondering if you might have any insight to how tobias might feel re: songs from passiflora making their way out into the world? i’m sure you’ve seen news about a copy of it that was recently purchased on discogs..
thanks for any info you might have for us 🙂
Well I don't live inside his head, so I don't know, but personally I’m more inclined to believe that he wouldn’t want it shared so far and wide and that is for a very simple reason: losing artistic control over his work and how it is presented to the public. Since the album was never officially released, we don’t really know in what way or form he intended for it to be released. I believe an artist deserves to do it on their own terms and, above all, in a way that grants them the profit from it. Here I'd like to elucidate on how House of Affection "leaked": the song was posted online by Tobias himself very, very many years ago and he most likely forgot about it until someone unearthed it around 2016 or so. It was a small website akin to Bandcamp (the exact name escaped me but I think it was Sweden based) where you could purchase songs directly from artists. There was a short bio, a tracklist, an album cover and one song, House of Affection. The moment it started gaining traction with Ghost fans, he deleted the whole account. Nevertheless, at least at some point he had full agency over the publication of his work and did it at a time and in a way he wanted to - something he would be robbed of now if the album was posted online by a third party. I imagine he’s not exactly thrilled about these few handmade copies getting passed around for thousands of $$$ either, but it is what it is. Another thing to consider is that he may want to use some of the music or ideas in the future including for a different project. Maybe he revisits the album at some point and decides it's time for others to hear it, who knows. That's for him to decide.

My Favorite Albums of 2023*
*not necessarily from 2023
Last year, I decided that, instead of limiting my "favorite" list to just the past year, I would broaden the scope to include any CD I acquired that year, whether it was released that year or not. Over the past 12 months, I've added 155 CDs to the already over-burdened collection (which may seem like a lot but it's down from 260 last year, so I believe some praise is due). These are my favorite 9, in alphabetical order by album title.
Tumblr media
Foo Fighters - But Here We Are
"Times Like These," whether he intended it to be or not, was one of the very few, great post-9/11 songs. And while I might expect that from Springsteen, Grohl didn't immediately spring to mind as a voice of comfort and empathy, so the song's impact may have actually been a bit greater than something akin to "The Rising" (which, don't get me wrong, is an amazing song). And now, a couple decades later, it shouldn't be surprising that a Foo Fighters album dealing with intense and intimate grief would also be stunning, but, like before, I certainly wasn't expecting it and also, like before, I've turned to it a hell of a lot more than I would have thought.
Tumblr media
Caroline Polachek - Desire, I Want To Turn Into You
You know those albums where you really like a bunch of the songs but not all of them but you also know that, with each repeated listen, you're going to find ways into the songs you didn't like as much on previous listens and come up with reasons why you actually do like those songs and therefore, think the entire album is brilliant? Yeah, this is one of those albums.
Tumblr media
billy woods and kenny segal - maps
Let me preface this by saying that I am years late to the billy woods party, so I do not have any way of comparing this to his previous, abundant discography, but if it is at all indicative of the rest of his work, I have some major catching up to do! woods is a top notch lyricist with a clear love of language and the ways in which it can be structured. His metaphors and imagery are complex and layered but never so obtuse that they alienate the listener. And all of this verbal brilliance is nestled comfortably on segal's inviting but never settled production. I'll come back to this one often.
Tumblr media
Stevie Wonder - Original Musiquarium I
I'm not normally a fan of "best of" compilations but this one, with the addition of the four unreleased tracks capping each "side," is so well put together and clearly thought through, I'm thrilled to have it as a part of my collection. Plus, it's really hard to ever go wrong with Stevie.
Tumblr media
Laura Mvula - Pink Noise
Roughly 5 years ago, I heard "She," and was blown away. I added Sing to the Moon to my discogs want list but never got around to snagging a copy. About 3 years ago, I heard "Got Me" and decided to be a bit more active in trying to acquire a copy of Pink Noise, but I think there were some transatlantic issues because nothing seemed to be remotely affordable. Fast forward to midway through this year, the album miraculously pops up on Amazon for under 10 bucks and a day or two later, I'm finally blessed with these 10 fiercely intelligent yet uncompromisingly catchy pop bangers.
Tumblr media
Pool Kids - Pool Kids
It's mathy, it's tappy, it's stupidly technical, but if you strip that all away, at its heart, these are 12 solid pop-punk/emo songs. So while the base effort is already worthwhile, the tremendous musicality turns them into something truly special.
Tumblr media
Atmosphere - Sad Clown Bad Fall 10
Okay, so it's only 5 tracks but hear me out. I was introduced to Slug and Ant through their brief stint with Epitaph Records and their, imho, brilliant album, Seven's Travels. Over the years, I've picked up an Atmosphere album here and there, but my takeaways have been lackluster and I started to wonder whether they were just a one-off in my book. And then I found this at a used record store in Seattle, and it not only reignited the flame but made me want to revisit the rest of my collection. That's pretty impressive for only 16 minutes of music.
Tumblr media
Triple Fast Action - Triple Fast Action
Triple Fast Action were probably the favorite band your favorite 90's alt-rock band (The Colour and the Shape was, apparently, greatly influenced by Broadcaster) and with only two albums to their name, it was a wonderful surprise to discover this treasure trove of unreleased and rare tracks, most of which were recorded in their rehearsal studio. While not everything is great, there's a general bittersweet air hovering around this 2-disc compilation - they could have been big, but for whatever reason, the stars didn't align. At least we now have so much more music.
Tumblr media
Ratboys - The Window
Ratboys aren't reinventing the wheel here. They pull upon most of the major indie rock tropes of the past couple of years (Americana, pop-punk, prog rock...) but even with the genre hopping, the album shifts seamlessly from track to track and always feels authentic. What would we do with a new wheel anyway? Wouldn't you rather just get the top-of-the-line version?

helooo :-) 3, 11, 12, 13, 30, 32!!!!
3. Most valuable record in your collection?
I’m bad because I don’t have them all logged on discogs EEK so I don’t KNOW exactly but I don’t have a ton of super rare ones. Probably the ATMP? Or maybe the Twin Peaks soundtrack because it was limited at the time…
11. Is there an “odd man out” record in your collection (it doesn’t fit in with the styles/genres of the rest of your collection)? If so, what is it?
Answered here! But I also have another strange one I like to share about- although I doooo have a lot of musical soundtracks, so it’s not that out of the ordinary for my collection, I have a very special West Side Story vinyl. It’s the pressing of the 1979 San Marino High School production of the show. When I bought it I posted about it on a San Marino hs Facebook page and connected with a few of of the performers who are on the record! It was just a cool experience and I treasure it because of that.
12. Record you listen to the most?
At this time probably Harvest by Neil Young!!!!! But historically Nashville Skyline and Revolver and the Stephen Stills self titled have gotten a lot of airtime.
13. Record you hardly play?
I have a large collection of soundtrack records that I love to have for the collection of it all but I don’t technically spin a loooot. So E.T., Jaws, Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Nope… none of those get a lot of spins but I like to look at them.
30. Record(s) that you want to buy next?
I would like to finally order Brainwashed to finish my George collection! I really want Blonde on Blonde and Highway 61 Revisited as well…
32. Do you own any color vinyl?
I have a LOT of color vinyl heehe. So many that uhhhh I’m gonna put pictures under a cut.
Ask Me Vinyl Questions!
okay colored vinyl dump. I have a few more than this but tumblr image limits…

my official beatles discog revisit has finally brought us to revolver 🏄🏻‍♀️ (technically already did my relisten of this one when they put out the super deluxe last year but shhh)
i think that side A has some of the most important songs in their entire discog and while i think rubber soul was the jumping-off point into a new era, revolver was the point of no return - a bridge to their old music, their old lives, and old fame burned, specifically with "eleanor rigby" "i'm only sleeping" and "she said she said" (then "tomorrow never knows" yea yea ofc)
BUT side B might be my one of favourite bundles of beatles songs in their whole collection (excluding "good day sunshine" .. sowwy). it's blissful and electrifying. can't imagine listening to this for the first time in '66 and probably feeling like you could hold the future in the palm of your hand, the bright and beautiful future ... ☮︎

Record Store Victory Tour 2022.
They say that once in a while you should treat yourself. It’s not often I do. After nine months of stay-at-home recovery, I promised myself that, when I was in a better place emotionally and monetarily, I would. So I had a wild idea. I decided to do something for myself I’ve never done before: an island-wide ‘record-store victory tour’. It consisted of hitting up each and every music store I could and buy as many vinyl records, cassettes, and CDs I could.
It started when I received my third paycheck of the month, my tax refund, a monthly store bonus, and our company giving us full-timers an extra $1,000 from national tax breaks and major donations. It was 2018 and the timing was right. I was in a much better place than I was 10 years before and for the first time in a long time I was feeling great.
It was intense and exhausting, but I loved it. It felt great getting back into doing what I loved doing the most; visiting a record store and spending as much as I wanted to on anything and everything I was a fan of or read about. I chased the excitement of finding artists, albums, and sounds I always meant to take home with me and get the most bang for the buck as possible. It became one of the largest excesses of individualism I’ve ever done for myself and I was all the happy for it. In the end, I spent no more than $1,500.00 on 280+ titles across eleven stores. I had fun doing it, and I told myself that if I could, I’d do it again.
It’s now 2022, and a new record-store tour was way overdue.
I missed the days where I’d get lost in the hunt and have the outside world fall behind me if only for a few hours. I never forgot the fascination of discovering those gems I waited years for and feeling surprised in finding the unexpected. In fact, those feelings never left me. I’m the same way now as I was then. I neglected myself for so long that I had to come back. And I did.
I’d return to all the stops I made last year. Gone are the ones who receded to online selling, and good riddance to the over-priced locations who’d scam anyone for three to four times the price. They would never get my attention from me. I even added a few new locations and then some. From the east end of Long Island to (now) some of Brooklyn and Manhattan’s most appealing stores, this year’s tour would be more extensive than the last - and the most expensive.
I knew I was better off financially than I was four years ago. I had way more in the bank than expected so I knew I could spend and feel guilt-free without the consequences or buyer’s remorse. You cannot even begin to imagine how much I laid out. Chances are it’s more than you ever want to.
And with money comes things I’d ultimately learn about this -tour. I no longer buy blindly and have Discogs at my hip. I’d discover specific albums and remembered searching through certain sections that changed the course of the visit. I’d revisit my Atari / Nintendo childhood via 7” and 12”s and also my alternative days when I told myself all the artists and albums I’ve once dismissed were actually OK. I even quit and cashed it in when I wasn’t feeling a store’s selection. Conversely, I’d go all-in and spend on genres and artists I felt I missed out on, plus insisting on giving my dealers a little extra for free records to keep them in business. That is what you call appreciation.
I’d tell myself to be patient and take all the time in the world for what I loved doing: staying in touch with myself. I’d build up my identity, to score style points, and separate myself from all the other vanilla people around me who “been there, done that”. Each and every record, tape, and disc I’d buy would be a beacon for me to shine on those who want to relate. They would all be ammunition for future playlists, broadcasts, and back-and-forth discussions on who-knows-what and what they don’t know.
In the end, I felt complete. I bought everything I wanted and did it all with no regrets. It’s the ultimate in self-care and the biggest favor I’ve ever done for myself.
Would I do this again? There’s always a shooting star’s possibility. I got it out of my system and things like these take a few years before I have a renewed urge to go for it. For now, there’s lots of titles I know I’ll never find in stores that I’ll find online. Should you ever have the chance to go all out and do a victory tour, do it. Do something guilt-free and with no regrets. Build yourself up, cross boundaries, take chances, and experience something that will stay with you forever. I promise you’ll be glad you did.

Liner Notes (February 3rd, 2024)
The first newsletter of February is here. Some thoughts on music, entertainment, and other random stuff. This week’s supporter Q&A post can be found here. If you’d like this newsletter delivered to your inbox each week (it’s free and available to everyone), you can sign up here. A Few Things * Last weekend, I had some time to work on fixing embeds on the website. I rolled out a new feature for our forum where members can pick whether they want to have automatic embeds. And there’s an option to disable them on mobile devices. With the feature on, which I now highly recommend on mobile, you can still tap/click to view an embed in a post, but they don’t load automatically. With this feature on and ads disabled, the forum is extremely fast. I’ve had it on (for mobile) all week and have noticed a massive difference. I have two other, relatively minor, projects to work on next, and then the big one: moving this newsletter completely off Substack. * A few years ago I bought a bunch of these NFC tags when the iPhone introduced the feature. I never found a great use for them, but I liked playing around with the feature and how it integrated into Shortcuts. This week, I finally found a fun use for one. I put one in the bedroom closet, and now, when I wake up and go to get dressed, I can set my phone on it. The automation will wake up my scale, turn on the kitchen light for coffee making, and turn on my office and desk lights and set them to the correct brightness and temperature: minor things, but a collection of events I do every single morning. In Case You Missed It * Review: Incubus – A Crow Left Of The Murder… * Hot Hot Heat End Reunion Early * Spanish Love Songs / Oso Oso Announce Tour * LCD Soundsystem Announces New Tour * Knocked Loose Announce Tour * Jesse Rutherford Starts Hardcore Band * Liner Notes (January 27th, 2024) * States of Nature – “Papered News” (Video Premiere) * Blink-182 Reach 15 Weeks at Number One * Albums in Stores – Feb 2nd, 2024 Music Thoughts * This week had me on a fun New Found Glory kick at the gym. Their faster pop-punk albums are perfect gym music and the two podcast episodes breaking down their biggest hits inspired the discog dive. I still haven’t been able to get into their latest full-length, but the EP on the deluxe version is fantastic. I’ve also really come around on Radiosurgery and that entire album has found a resurgent life for me these past couple of years. Resurrection is still easily at the bottom for me, but Makes Me Sick and the live release are a blast to revisit. * Paramore’s cover of “Burning Down the House” is awesome. Just a perfect spin on the song with Paramore’s After Laughter flair and Hayley knocking the vocals way out of the park. It’s up there with my favorite vocal performances from her, for sure. * The Young Hearts’ new album, Somewhere Through the Night, came out in late December during the holiday music lull, so I never actually wrote about it here in the newsletter—time to rectify that. If you like bands like The Gaslight Anthem, The Menzingers, and Cold Years, but with a little more pop-punk flavor thrown on top, this is absolutely worth checking out. I can see this getting a lot of play this upcoming spring and summer. * Dave Hause re-worked a bunch of old Loved Ones songs to fit more in with his solo singer-songwriter sound, and the outcome is pretty great. They were great songs before, and they’re also great songs in this format. * I didn’t spend enough time last year with Noah Kahan’s album, Stick Season. I knew it blew up, but I couldn’t find the right mood for it to latch onto me. It turns out cold January nights work a lot better. There are a few places where I get Andy from Manchester Orchestra vibes with the vocals, and the songs pack an emotional punch in the gray doldrums of late winter. * Emily Wolfe’s The Blowback is one I flat-out missed last year but caught on someone’s end-of-the-year list and added to my listen list playlist. Record #969: Emma Ruth Rundle - Some Heavy Ocean (2014)
I’ve been going through a massive Emma Ruth Rundle phase lately. It all started when I revisited On Dark Horses and realized that it’s probably in my top fifty records of all time. In the couple weeks since, I’ve revisited the many, many other projects of hers I have. When that wasn’t enough, I took to Discogs to fill the gaps in my collection. Most glaring of these was Some Heavy Ocean, her…

20 January 2024: Dead Center, Game Theory. (2023 Omnivore vinyl release of 2014 Omnivore expanded reissue of 1984 French Lolita compilation album)
Davis, California's Game Theory, and specifically frontman and sole constant Scott Miller, is on my list of all-time favorites. I've said it before and I'll say it again: I think Miller is in the same league of songwriters as Elvis Costello. He never got his full due during his life, and it wasn't until his 2013 suicide that the catalog of his band Game Theory was reissued to fanfare. (I'm still waiting for the catalog of his follow-up band The Loud Family to get the same treatment.)
The reissue campaign was overseen by Dan Vallor, Game Theory's original tour manager and sound engineer, with loving attention. I had some quibbles with its execution, but overall it provided me and countless others with the chance to revisit Miller's excellent 1980s work and it made for some of my most enjoyable listening for several years.
One of the oddball releases in the Omnivore campaign was their 2014 release Dead Center. This release was modeled after a 1984 compilation LP that came out only in France, under the same name. That original Dead Center was a bit of an oddity to begin with: it compiled some, but not all, of the tracks from the band's two EPs Pointed Accounts of People You Know (1983) and Distortion (1984) (including one written and sung by early member Fred Juhos), along with an alternate take of a song that previously appeared on a promo flexi (the title track "Dead Center") and a cover of the Box Tops' "The Letter." The French Dead Center came out before the band even had substantial distribution in the U.S.; I saw it in discographies throughout the pre-Internet years of my Game Theory fandom and was always baffled by it.
Rather than issue the original Dead Center as part of its campaign, Omnivore spruced it up to include an extra eleven songs including live recordings, demos, radio sessions, and the original flexi version of the title track. It came out on CD in 2014 and, so quietly that it happened without me even noticing, they released its first vinyl edition in August 2023. I finally learned about it while perusing the offerings in a recent 40%-off sale on the Omnivore site. I'm not sure why this was such an instant purchase; in comparison, I refused to buy a vinyl copy of the final item in the Omnivore campaign, the unpleasant 2020 compilation of death-throes Game Theory recordings Across the Barrier of Sound: Postscript from right before Miller formed The Loud Family. Unlike that album, I do love much of the content of Dead Center, and now I have an unexpected and possibly final "new" Game Theory release to enjoy when it finally rises to the top of my to-play stack. Why they issued this vinyl edition at a remove of nine years is beyond me; there was no other such gap in the rest of the band's reissue campaign.
Above are the front cover, hype sticker, and back cover. This is a single-pocket sleeve and there is no gatefold.

i just have some thoughts to dump .
youtube
i first heard of wednesday a few years ago and "fate is..." was definitely in my top 5 most listened to songs on spotify in 2021 or 22. i didnt know til recent that mj lenderman was a member and didnt know til like yesterday that they might be even better (to me!!!!!).
my first full listen to their live album they put out in later 2023 was yesterday and it changed things for me. embarrassingly enough i only took interest in tyler childers a few months ago. after this neocountry ( i know thats not what its actually called ) awakening within me ive been on a quest to find a good country sounding band that fused with my other genres of interest well. like better than pinegrove well. a honky tonk shoegaze project would be an incredible thing to stumble on, though no im not sure how its going to work with time keeping and all that whatever, no ones proven to make it happen since. but mj is the closest i have ever gotten.
about halfway through the album, i was able to identify something about mjl's familiar vocal... cadence? and place it with neil young. from referencing dylan, john daly, rodeo clowns, michael jordan, tom brady, jack nicholson, jackass, and rust on a grill left in the rain, american citizenship and our often borderline-unbelievable and ever-entertaining popular culture in the digital age help define mjl's sound, especially on this combination of previous releases. from ethel introducing gen z coastals to dale sr. to realtree camo being in casual rotation in an urbanites closet for work or dive hopping, americas "middle" aesthetics are becoming more recognized and thus more commodified. as someone raised in the rural midwest to now residing in the urban midwest, the sudden "trendiness" of articles of clothing or topics of conversation that used to embarrass you if your dad sported either in public, is both affirming and maddening. if you have ever been to a meat raffle, if the deer and fishing openers were treated like holidays in your hometown, or if youve ever resided at a residence within 1 mile of a "trump store", then you know there is a certain valor that comes with it. it wasnt pleasant. it wasnt comfortable. but it was something you did, you survived, and you still probably feel like home there. im getting incredibly off topic and wil probably revisit this concept in a seperate manor........
anyways all that above is to be said because i need you all to know that i do recognize the sin i am committing in this next statement which is to refer mjl's voice with noneother than ontarian neil young. their tenor-ish ranges, along with each of their tendencies to undermix in favor of a raw, though mjl isnt pushing any major life lessons or reflecting on their 20s in any of this album (yet).
knockin, the second track, is where i officially got hooked. i love bob dylan. i love obscure interpolations used within songs. but the only other artist to reference a lyric as common as "knocking on heavens door" that comes to mind IMMEDIATELY is lana, and mjl did it complete justice. on similar note, rudolph was able to become a highlight for me for, once again, a dylan interpolation.
screaming "you are very girl to me!" doesnt have the same affect as passively referring to a love gone as simply "a sunday", but mjl's lyrics immediately reminded me of a few childers lyrics. i cant help but think these asheville guys are childers fans due to the addition of the cover of 'long black veil'. yeah sure its a classic country!, but mjl's lyricism suggests to me that this is more of a reference to a reference, of course referring to "jersey giant" (ORIGINALLY BY TYLER CHILDERS).
dunno how to wrap these. i was just so so impressed with this album and happy i finally bit the bullet and took the internets suggestion to give them a chance.
8.5/10, id like to listen to their discog and hear the studio versions of each song as well.

León Gieco is not only an inescapable figure to think about the social influence of music but also to understand how a handful of words can pierce into the collective unconscious to transpolate the work of an individual. His words, arranged in a huge discography of 40 albums, crossed Argentine music in a definitive way, making him one of the most relevant popular singers of the last 50 years. A musician who, through his songs, shared the crudest story and with the greatest airs of justice in the country.

Let's Talk About... Harry Styles - Fine Line LP There is something magical about a good pop song. It's warm, inviting and absolutely disgusting when judged by my normal listening triggers. Something has made me revisit this album more times than I would like to admit. Let's face it. When it comes to music and happiness, there is no guilty pleasure. It's either enjoyable or not. In my opinion, I think Adore You may be one of the most addictive pop songs ever released. Whatever the formula is, it has captured my heart. I crank that song full blast and love every second of it. Considering it's the third track on the album, that means I've also heard that Watermelon Sugar track many times as well. That's a sharp combo for someone like myself. So, here we are. Once again listening to Fine Line as I write this and enjoying it. Am I totally sold on the entire record? This could be my stubbornness to fully submit or maybe it is what it is. Some gold in the hills worth mining to enjoy the spoils. Either way, that song is strong enough to win a daily feature here. If you read this far, are we still friends?
