I know neither of you expected to ever be on this side of the line, but we are going to take care of it and you boys will not do a goddamn thing. Am I understood?”  “You want us to just sit here and watch our home burn?”  “That’s exactly what I want you to do, Diaz,” she bites, not unkindly. “That’s exactly what I expect you to do.”  Eddie gnaws on the inside of his cheek and nods, unable to meet her eyes.  “Yes, Captain,” Buck answers for both of them. He tightens his grip on Eddie’s shoulders as a warning. “We understand.”  Captain Crawford nods, once, and offers them a small smile before ducking back around the truck and shouting orders at her firefighters. She’s far enough away that Eddie can’t make anything out; the hold Buck has on his t-shirt doesn’t budge and he isn’t sure he would go anywhere if it did.  Firefighters rush around them, pulling out equipment and hoses as they do. A few of them take notice of Eddie and Buck, realize they’re part of the department and offer nods of sympathy in the form of tipped hats and pats on shoulders. Others ignore and work around them, even when Buck opens his mouth to ask on the developments.  It’s not going well. Eddie doesn’t need to see or hear to know that. He’s been on the other side enough to realize when something is a lost cause and their house is a goner, gone up in flames because of fireworks shot off by a group of stupid kids.
