Azazel's backstory is WEAK 

Azazel’s backstory has potential, but it thematically makes no sense. 

At its core, the demon Azazel is the Luciferian opposite to Sigmar’s Jesus/god. His name and visual design is referencing fallen angel and his backstory contain elements of betrayal and a “fall from paradise.” 

However, the details of his story falls apart. His mortal life should be equally as diametrically oppose to Sigmar as his demonhood is to the Empire’s god. In the actual lore, he was barely a part of Sigmar’s life. His most important role is to accidentally kill his sister, who was Sigmar’s lover at the time. How does rage and grief at a brother’s death make him Slaaneshi? How does accidentally stabbing your sister make him a foil to Sigmar? He barely has a relationship to Sigmar.      

Where’s the angst and ennui of Paradise Lost’s pretty-boy satan? Where the tasty personal betrayal of conflict between foils? Give us the drama GW!

My pitch:

If we’re going to make the “evil corrupting literal satan” let’s fucking go ALL THE WAY. 

Azazel and Sigmar were lovers. 

The empire is homophobic so of course when they recorded it, Sigmar was a straight little soldier boy! The holy book of Sigmar was canonically written half a century after his death, based on anecdotes of citizen who remember him. The Empire doesn’t worship the man Sigmar, they worship a grand idealized hero. 

Boom. 

Now it can have the homoeroticism of Paradise Lost; replicate the real life conflict of the life of Jesus as a man vs the story of Jesus as a religious character; add doubt to the beliefs of the empire; also it makes the equivalent of ‘Christian god’ gay.
