I think modern au Zhu SHOULD be the lesbian best friend trope to Ouyang except that its because this man is her pet project and gODDDAMIT she's gonna FIX him she's gonna MAKE him be BETTER she's going to SOLVE EVERYTHING and he will RESPECT HER (she is actively making him worse). She has a whole complex about it and everything. She has based a part of her identity on dragging this man up from his toxic funk and is fully convinced that if she tries hard enough he will eventually come to his senses and be an equal participant in this relationship. They have a terrible wonderful toxic loving codependent relationship that's neither a romance nor a friendship nor a rivalry but a secret fourth thing.

Predictably, this does not go well. The character arcs would be Zhu learning she can't fix a sinking ship and letting Ouyang fail by himself, and Ouyang learning to not be a shit person, actually, and coming out of his bubble of self-centeredness and working on himself instead of unloading his emotional labor onto the people around him. And they should both get to develop a healthier relationship with each other than what they had in canon bc queer solidarity is great and its even better when it's in the shape of some weird bullshit some gay people built out of the corpse parts of heteronormative romance (affectionate and completely unironic)

when i created this au, i thought the best option would be for her to be unable to interact with the physical world in any way(including possesion), beacuse i really wanted to lean into her isolation and how it affects her....... and while thats something i still want to emphasise here, lately ive been toying with the idea of jiro being able to impact the physical world somehow(though it still being fairly limited). i think letting her have some control could have a lot of potential! buuuut i also have no idea what abilities i want her to have lol

For now i think im not gonna give her any telekinetic abilities, bc i feel like it would be giving her too much power......... if she could throw shit, shed go APESHIT with it. it would made things too easy for her. i'm sorry babygirl but i'm NOT giving you the possibilty to throw knives and other sharp objects, i dont trust you to not kill someone:/

oh yeah i rewatched the series last month and i wanted to share some thoughts about this quote

"and it shall be bestowed upon you, the star which you have longed for"

i only noticed then how this quote it Very thematically fitting of the characters playing out the story and what, as the audience, witness.

i think the funky thing about it is how. it seems a little bit contradictory. bestowed has the image of someone else giving something to you, it isnt something that you do on your own. whereas longed is extremely personal. you want something so bad that you get this feeling. but from this quote. only someone else can provide that something else.

and from the angle i. opened my eyes on that quote, we could say. it feels extremely close to the relationship between the audience and the performers/characters.

the star you have longed for can be MANY things in that series. but i will take the one aspect i mean here. wishing to be the main character. in starlight the plays that they will perform. but it could also be the main character of the overall story that we are witnessing. the revues are the proof that all the 9 characters do wish for the former at least.

however. it shall be bestowed upon you. who gets to decide it. who gets to decide who is the main character. thats only the people who get the witness the story, thats the audience. and isnt it incredible. that we got someone for that in the story. kirin is the one who declares the winner and who overviews the revues. kirin is a representation of the audience.
