Thinking about being a nanny for single parent Dynamight and you’re done for the day, chatting about how everything went. Conversation turns casual and as you’re turning to leave, his son runs up and shouts “LOOK AT THIS!” and then yanks his dad’s shirt up. Chiseled flesh with a perfect amount of a happy trail leading to more that you’ve thought about once or twice. Heat rises to your cheeks and you turn away, but not fast enough and Bakugou catches your lingering gaze.
“Quit it, kid,” he ruffles his son’s hair but doesn’t pull his shirt back down. You make your excuses and leave. Bakugou wishes you a good night and watches you make your way back to your car, flushed.

i was reading the end part of abomination and was wondering three things ,1-what is the meaning of Joey changing from his real world self to his story world self ? Since it appears that joey died,does this mean that his real world self and story world self fused ?, 2-how does joey control over the story world works ? is he aware of what the story version of hackenbush has become or he is independent from joey's actions ?3 What would happen if the little devil darling cartoon has played ?
answers to all of these could potentially be "well you're supposed to come up with some interpretation yourself" but i do have things in mind as answers to these questions :)
real joey didn't die (yet), so it's not them fusing - i realize that it might be a bit confusing story joey has been created soulless however as you can see in the ending this happens
Tumblr media
i don't mind people coming to the conclusion that story joey has real joey's soul but if you would like to hear me out on what i precisely have in mind for this
[becomes an unskippable cutscene]
Tumblr media
so when you look through the seeing tool in batim you can see these floating gold particles
to me it's joey's soul scattered through this entire ink dimension because he is the storyteller of it and influences the way it's been made and how it functions
and that can also include some creatures
creatures that "fully" have their own soul like susie!alice don't have anything to do with him but ones that don't have a full soul of another person? or no soul at all?
the ink demon (squish) and story joey have been created but not with an use of a sacrifice
they are soulless but they are a physical manifestation of joey's soul that really has been used for creating this entire world
however he is "anchored" to his ink counterpart and that's what it stands for
that's why story joey's and bendy's "souls" join together
because in the story that joey is telling ink creatures are made/perfected via sacrifice and via using people's souls in this process - so technically story joey is "supposed" to have a soul
...yeah i know it's a bit complicated but you must understand. i'm very autistic. njknjknkjnkj
2. joey's control over the story mostly boils down to creating situations, events, enforcing themes, introducing new characters and in rare occasions tweaking character's personalities
however all of these abilities have their limits and they don't just rely on his skills as a storyteller because those aren't really that bad, there is also some ink magic fuckery involved :)
for example story joey is NOT written how he would have liked him to be - all characters become a more exaggerated/cartoonish version of themselves - and through the lense of his regret and self hatred he has made out quite an asshole out of himself
like he already was one but he's managed to make him even worse
task failed successfully
3. little devil darling. is. something, alright
Tumblr media
it's the first bendy cartoon to exist
and yet... we've never seen any of it. it's not up there with all the other cartoons in bendy's throne room in chapter 5, nor all the other rooms inside of the giant ink machine
however. there are two things
Tumblr media
this image is a screenshot of @lucky-dreamfisher 's theory because their eye for details really helped me with some of my own theory/headcanon crafting :)
and i agree with the conclusion they reach here - since this cartoon is missing, the very first bendy cartoon, it means that bendy is prevented from reaching perfection
and preventing joey/bendy from reaching perfection just seemed like a great revenge to come from susie!alice :) additional points for the fact that i associate "who's laughing now?" with alice since this message also appears next to boris' corpse in chapter 1
i'm not saying that story joey would have made a perfect bendy otherwise, but this way the process will never be perfect from the technical side either
but also speaking of little devil darling
Tumblr media
there is a poster of it inside of the giant ink machine while there are no other posters
i just thought that's interesting

Tumblr media
YES!! segment !! wahoo !!!!! this is where i constantly stuff my nose in whenever i want a good reference on adachis character. AND THEY'RE ALL PERFECT TO ME!! <- about the media
Persona 4 (PS2 2008)
Back to basics everybody!!! Let’s remember who this goofball is from the start. Forget he has a social link and see him be the bumbling fool for plot exposition and the real murderer !!!! Just like how I tell you not to reference the attendant during 3/20, we can put Shadow Adachi’s mannerisms and his influence under literal god aside and try and focus on what that means as symbolism and extra information on Adachi himself!!
Standalone Drama CD Vol. 3
THIS IS A FUN ONE he has scattered cameos throughout the drama and was essentially being dragged around by Dojima.
Basic premise of this volume that it’s sports festival season!! Yasogami’s at it and the IT are participating, as well as Nanako—although she worries that her dad won’t even come to see her and that she wouldn’t even be able to do the family three-legged race.
Adachi’s appearances here are so stupid, he says he was an “elite” then flops trying to help high-schoolers with homework because Naoto’s there. He does his usual begging and whining with Dojima etc etc he also drove Dojima to compete with Nanako after saying the man finished all his reports as fast as possible.
Tumblr media
I like this one because it reinforces who Adachi is based mostly from the main game. With the context that fans listening are aware he’s the culprit (or not), they do sprinkle in his “emptiness” (<- no i'm exaggerating it sorry) and bring it to the front of the picture a bit.

Manga Adaptation (Sogabe)
SOUJI SETA TRUTHER COMING IN STRONG also i just adore Sogabe’s adaptation on the game as a whole. While I am Marie lover#1, this manga did begin in 2008, and I like to think it’s the hypothetical that Marie really was expunged completely OKAY WHERE WAS I
As mentioned, this whole adaptation focuses on the game before Golden was ever a thing. No scooters, no extra events, no nothing. Although, Sogabe did write in a bit of Adachi’s Social Link in a context best suited for Souji.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I like Sogabe's take on Adachi in the manner of how he draws him and writes him as a character. It's not as whimsical or lazy like the anime, and the way he took the downhill spiral of the Hospital arc, from November to December, just actually felt like my emotions were ready in the right places. Surprisingly, in every adaptation, I was really enamored to see how Adachi acted differently in each one.
In the manga, he didn't seem as slack jawed as he did in the game at least. He looked like he was trying so hard to act concerned when he he actually feels guilty for everything going down !!! OR MAYBE NOT !!!!!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
compared to the game, you can really how much he exudes of being so. plastic. ung kaplastikan. and you're mad not because you're stuck with ps2 limitations of three polygons of an arm waving around, but you're mad that he reeks of faking concern. But also unlike the game, you don't understand what's going on anymore because of the things that have transpired in relation to Adachi's character. Which is Sogabe's adaptation of his Social Link with Souji through having dinner with each other.
and Souji doesn’t know him! They share things with one another that one dinner but otherwise, Adachi’s never rambled on about himself as much as he does in a normal Social Link run. There is a different sort of motive with Souji and he wants to some things wrap things up while everything else is falling apart around him. If there’s a chance to help someone, even if he’s only talked thoroughly once or twice and that the other party’s opened up a single time to him, he’s the boy who wants to get through to people either way. What if Souji’s a bit selfish himself and wants to be in control of things when everything in his life and vision are literally blurring as he breathes? (takes place in november when nanako's hospitalized btw)
Tumblr media
I love the lack of intimacy between the two, contrary to what majority of the fan base wants or even BELIEVES. Souji is a kid with a year in Inaba, of course he does a million other things with his time than hang out with an adult that’s some kind of darker version of himself and a representation of a possible bleaker future considering how similar they are.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As for the specific chapters, I think it’s fulfilling to go through the whole manga from the start. Like, forget everything you know about P4 for a second and experience it as fresh as possible. Then you get to Chapter 54 to see Adachi’s condensed Social Link and get to Volume 12 to see things come together. Sure, I start getting a bit iffy with Volume 13 but I enjoy the parallels between the two, genuinely.
i have more stuff locked and loaded but uhmmm yeah 👍

you will never see adachi ever act like a cunt like this ever again. he only does it once because hes gay.
i have made a million essays about this this is the foundation of this gas station itself

Arena Ultimax; Episode Adachi
hahaha. haha. laughs weakly. haha.
I would kindly ask everybody to do this in Japanese dub but otherwise ehmmm yeah ! Episode Adachy. I do enjoy how they try to elaborate how his personalities are coalescing into a single face as he doesnt have to fake around people anymore. Like the fact that his lame humor is still present and he’ll do stupid voices, which makes you wonder if he was always like this or that it’s something he adopted while acting out the last facade he’s done for over a year—or more.
HE IS SO FUCKING OPINIONATED AND THINKS HES SO COOL he has SO MUCH PRIDE but also he doesnt at the same time. you think hes a soldier surviving in the idgaf war but hes still dying in the mines he planted and crossfire for multiple reasons. hes simultaneously a teenage girl and a man in his late twenties.
Tumblr media
Adachi is totally giving a fuck, not just in a white girl bully “I’m better than everyone” kind of way but like he’s totally giving a fuck about a lot of things. “Oh I gotta stop whatever this god has going down for this city in bumfuck nowhere because the case is going to go around in circles and i’ll never serve jail time in peace” how many times has he turned corners in an alleyway maze just by saying this.
hes literally trembling in his shoes with everything happening in that hour but hes just so good at bottling up emotions from others and HIMSELF. Theres only so much he’ll admit in his own monologue—in his own thoughts. That hes aware of things but he’ll never say it out loud even in his own head i’ll tear him apart with my bare hands <- i am just genuinely annoyed he can do this and not me but i should be grateful that i can express myself than be an emotionally repressed asshole
He finds kids who are mirrors where he sees himself in. One, a goody two-shoes who has it all, the other an actual brat with a fucked up life from loneliness, isolation, and abuse (a million other things). And he’s not annoyed only because he finds similarities between him and them, but the fact that they’re children and they have at least a decade more than his ass which he spent sulking about with.
He’s mad at Bancho because he has his way from the kindness and generosity of his time he’s spent with others, something Adachi didn’t do; in which he could use his situation with his family and education as an excuse, but he never brings that up because as much as he likes seeing others eat shit and he has his way, Adachi also considers himself a fuckup. can you see this irony. So many chances to get out there and socialize, but he stuck his nose in his studies thinking a good future’s already laid out for him—BUT THE BUBBLE POPPED which is what fucking happens when youre in Japanese economic depression after the bubble economy. and you dont bother to leave your comfort zone either EVEN WHEN YOU DONT NECESSARILY like the things youre doing because it’s the only damn thing you’re used to !!!!
He’s sick of Sho because he’s an oversized 10 year old who’s doing the exact same thing Adachi’s done in the past and Adachi is sick of that. he hates himself. and he’ll hate a kid for acting the same way. He’ll project so much he’ll fix another person’s mistakes not out of pure goodness of his heart, but because he doesnt like himself as a person no matter how much he tries to deflect these thoughts in his own head.
Tumblr media
Adachi’ll scoff and nitpick Narukami because he doesn’t want to admit this better version of him is better. That he’s not this other guy, but rather, he’s just himself. He complains and whines about Dojima and even says he “hates him,” but is everyone not aware he’s the second biggest tsundere in this series next to Marie at this point. they are COMPETING for that number one title.
Tumblr media
no matter how many times he tries to sever connections for the sake of the other party, those bonds are developed enough for the other party to WANT to tie it back together. he doesnt know how to build bridges, but he doesnt know how to properly burn them either. hes sloppy at everything he does. he is gay.
Tumblr media
okay sorry about that im sososo dizzy honestly. where was i. i talked about his issue with his Persona before and how it isnt his Persona a million times on this blog sorry i really everything's spinning right now 'and you're still writing an adachi essay?' hushup

Arena Ultimax Manga Adaptation (Rokuro Saito)
this is a bit funny. i read it mostly for Sho like. while i do adore it as very beautiful adaptation. when it comes to adachi uhh. hmm. looks around. the rokuro saito effect. he did mementos mission too if you're wondering and what I mean by this.
I mean he did reinforce Adachi getting proper police training and essentially being above average to the top of his classes (krav maga, shooting accuracy, detectivisms, etc.). His humor and mannerisms are also delightful i think personally with the way they're illustrated and essentially visualized. Rokusai has his quirk for drawing everybody really pretty which he does really well for Persona characters, but it also caught me really off guard when he works on adachi like okay! sho breaking his ribs can fix everything itsok.

OH now this is the section where im a bit iffy with the characterization here but i still like to reference it sometimes
The Golden Animation
Blu-ray/DVD Vol. 2; Bonus Drama CD: A Sense of Gratitude
Adachi doesnt have a big part here he’s literally there to help with the Dojima garden and Narukami plants cabbages for him.

youtube
Blu-ray/DVD Vol. 4; Bonus Drama CD: Boo ~ I bear a grudge on you ~
THIS. this, goodness gracious it was so silly. Adachi’s here for a few segments with Dojima in the pub. Detective yaoi if thats what you’re into I guess. He also sounds a bit cheeky here in speaking tone and the scheme he’s pulling to call Naoto to do their job while Dojima’s knocked out on duty.
Available Video Link: https://youtu.be/PasKTZtKx_c?t=720 (timestamped at 12:00)
youtube
The Animation
i dont have much to say about the actual anime i dont really watch it, but i respect the Narukami truthers out there. It’s just not for me, nor do I reference it for Adachi at all. why does he look like this
Tumblr media
i dont have that much judgement to say if it's good enough to use as reference for Adachi besides it visualizing how much of a goofball he is, I guess I could mention that. I have issues of it depicting lore but otherwise i dont think it's that much different than what the base game pulls besides it different pacing to better fit the animation medium.
Standalone Drama CD Vol. 2: You'll understand when you get older
Not particularly partial with this one because the anime gave Narukami a face, like he’s his own character here. Dojima makes Adachi go to Okina and deliver something because his clown ass forgot to hand it over to the other prefect police who visited within the day. Narukami’s off to go help Ebi stand in line for a makeup promo and Dojima says they can go together. There’s a subplot with the IT where they think Narukami’s being arrested lol so they go follow him throughout the rest of the drama.
Adachi just hangs out with the silly billy that is his boss’ nephew who has so much kindness and generosity that it could get the kid killed one day.

The Golden (PS VITA 2013)
I scratch my head and wonder what they were going for with Adachi’s Social Link besides the fanservice. I mean thats what they did with akc in royal i guess. <- has my own opinions about this but im closing my mouth.
It feels a bit too… intimate for me? What’s the deal with WANTING to invite him for dinner… without Dojima around either. Like they’re a two in one package for me, you can’t see one without the other most of the time. Like Adachi’s slacking off work while Dojima’s slaving away by himself? I’ve always believed they get off at the same time or something because of the subordinate status.
I did enjoy the Junes segments though, it kind of felt like it was a good placement—if you move things around a bit. Him hiding behind your back while you’re doing groceries so it looks like he’s busy was a bit funny, and him chatting you up while you’re supposed to be busy yourself is also silly if you consider that Bancho himself wants to bail and was just caught into his chismosa and whining. He has enough of a degree of association with you as you’re putting your nose into the murder case and that you’re his boss’ nephew, so that’s kind of why you’re the only few people he can talk to.
(pauses yes or yes ) i also ate ice cream where was I going with this
dont make me talk about the accomplice ending that thing’s pretty corny to me but also unnerving i dont want to think about it alot.
With the way things have gone for Adachi’s new characterization with the added Social Link and the new events for Golden, it personally made me think twice about it all, especially when his TV studio and Shadow self ended up the same. There’s a lot to go about this? (<- deranged) and I will admit that I myself got sucked into the idea that he’s an antagonist and couldn’t truly experience everything right at that point. whoopsie. Then again, looking at it at this point in time after a few years makes me realize yeah maybe this does make a bit of sense! The nature of the fog has changed, which can explain the drastic change in character between Namatame and Adachi. which is an essay for another day I really feel a bit out of it.
Tumblr media
The “um” segment. Stuff I dont really like to reference nor put in the pot that makes adachi soup because im really iffy with it and how the writing was taken liberally for the sake of the audience rather than the reinforcement of source material itself.
The Golden Animation
The Adachi centric episodes 6, 7, and the accomplice ending bonus episode lol, as the whole Golden anime was really for Marie and other new Golden add-ons like Okina and scooters and ski trip and etc.
how do I put this. im really opinionated on this segment it’s okay if you dont take my word for it. I dont like the production quality. The animation is honestly really bad and the artstyle itsnt tasteful with how it’s executed. There’s enough frames of Marie that people looking over my shoulder while I watch would call her Adachi. It really is a boatload of a cashgrab and fanservice that kind of adds new insightful things to the lore but honestly? I don;t trust it. Like the writers forgot what they were writing about and started writing fanfiction of what they originally made.
It did give some insight with Adachi, but I hate how they just made Narukami the way he is for this adaptation. Like the boy does have all the time in world and hes not an overworked high-schooler with so many commitments now he can… make a man dinner and deliver it to him…? I would definitely say “> Adachi doesn't seem to lead a nutritionally balanced life...” and leave it at that, i am not making him dinner i dont have time for that. can someone get this guy a girlfriend please. Don’t get me started how they treated his character development and lore surrounding him overall im sick of it. At least Sogabe made it all look pretty.
Tumblr media
anyway here’s the part where i can add my closing thoughts as someone who fills a niche solely because they think and enjoy things so differently than the present majority. I don’t think im mature enough to enjoy things peacefully in a community full of different people but also because im losing the idgaf war myself. I’m glad I can enjoy a media in general and I’m so happy when people can enjoy it with me. (had to stop the cat from clawing on the vacuum he likes the texture apparently) where was I
hold my hand as i go through a hundred coming of age arcs in my life and that one day i wont be as embarrassed as i am now to admit i like tohru adachi as a character and talk about him with a restraint so childish because I dislike how a majority depict him. he’s part of my journey as i learn things about myself as much as mimi but in a more human way because. hes human. or something. one day i can forget his reputation in the community and create all the things i make with pure love that is not fueled by spite to be right and correct. I already know i am right and correct because everyone can enjoy things their own way and find things that they like in one thing that are different from things others like. for now, i will still treat him like an insufferable uncle older brother thing whose arm i periodically chew on until i reach bone and let him carry me back to bed when im tired of being annoyed of him.

how did Donald Duck influence Star Wars? And wasn’t Indiana Jones inspired by Scrooge, not Donald?
George Lucas and Steven Spielberg mentioned that they were inspired by Carl Barks' comics.
So was Osamu Tezuka, the creator of Astro Boy and "Godfather of Modern Manga."
And Donald Duck was going on adventures with his nephews in the Carl Barks comics long before Scrooge McDuck was created and this is precisely why DT17 and other media trying to give all the credit to Scrooge but forgetting that Donald was the FIRST just proves my point in my frustration with them.
Everyone just thinks it was Scrooge McDuck thanks to the later Don Rosa's work: "Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck" which was loosely based on Carl Barks' works (Don Rosa exaggerated a lot of Scrooge's abilities at the expense of Donald's).
This is why I advocate for giving credit where credit is due when it comes to canon characters and where I feel DT17 really dropped the ball. Donald was an adventurer looong before Scrooge and some of Carl Barks' best comics don't even have him:
-"Donald Duck Finds Pirate Gold" - Carl Barks first full length comic
- "Mystery of the Swamp" - Donald and nephews encounter gnomish creatures in the Everglades which some think were the inspiration for the Ewoks in Star Wars
"The Mad Chemist" (the comic credited with discovering the chemical compound methylene 20 years before it was actually studied and verified!)
-"Lost in the Andes" - Carl Barks claimed was his best work
- "The Golden Helmet" - Donald and nephews: whoever possesses the golden helmet is ruler of North America
- "The Ice Box Robber" - The comic that showcased Donald having WWII PTSD
- "Sherrif of Bullet Valley" - Donald and nephews in the Wild West
- "Dangerous Disguise" - a comic about spies where a Donald look alike commits suicide by jumping out of a window
- "Luck of the North" Donald and nephews rescue Gladstone in Alaska
"Old California" - Donald and the nephews seem to time travel to California in 1848 and they witness the family there living their lives. It turns out they were in a bad car accident and were on the hospital in a coma for weeks. But the house is still there.
"A Christmas for Shacktown" - Donald and the nephews find ways to raise money for the poor kids in town
"The Gilded Man" - A search for a rare stamp leads Donald and the boys finding El Dorado
- "The Forbidden Valley" - Donald and the nephews discover a lost land of dinosaurs
Just to name a few. There are plenty more.
The great thing about the Carl Barks comics especially when it came to Donald was that although he still had bad luck, it showed him also have great skills in practically everything and it tackled deep emotional issues and real world events such as PTSD, spies/espionage, danger/adventure, poverty, but in a way that was relatable and entertaining.
Donald mixed the best of high action adventure with scenes of intimate, heartwarming domestic life with his nephews. It was literally the best of both worlds: adventure and domestic life.
So the world needs to know that actually it's Donald Duck that deserves the credit for the success of the Carl Barks comics. Not only was Donald first but he was used as the protagonist for many more comics than Scrooge. And I hope if we ever get another version of Ducktales that the writers actually credit Donald as he deserves and not a bunch of semi newbies that don't even exist in the original comics.
There's so much he inspired and influenced that people don't know and so it's unfair for him to be sidelined as he was for characters that haven't accomplished one iota of what he has.
It's time to give credit where it's actually due: to Donald Duck.

Oh, ScreenRant, do not make me do this again…
~~~
You’ve got to be kidding me.
Tumblr media
Um… we know the reason. Thanos sent him.
Tumblr media
… narrative gaps? The only gaps we’re dealing with are the ones where they’ve refused to elaborate on him being used by Thanos. They set it up and did nothing with it. That’s the only gap.
Tumblr media
Huh??? The reason is in the movie. Literally just watch the movie. He is clearly acting under orders.
Tumblr media
*trying not to explode*
A) That is MASSIVELY simplified, and barely true. He was mad at Odin, sure. He was jealous of Thor but all of his motivations in the previous movie that continued into The Avengers were about Odin. He wasn’t exactly angry with Thor, he hadn’t done anything to merit it. He was made to feel as if he hated him thanks to the scepter, but they were a magical exaggeration of his real feelings. And I’m not sure where holding NYC hostage is coming from. An attack and a hostage situation are not the same thing.
B) Even if Loki (or the Loki of this series, at least) sees the events this way, that doesn’t mean it’s accurate and should be taken as a complete explanation. There’s a difference between what a person may think and what really happened as objective fact. Again, I find it darkly amusing that whenever he tells the truth, it’s taken as a lie, and whenever he’s lying or at least just being an unreliable narrator, it’s taken as the truth, because it’s nice and simple to believe that any good things regarding him are questionable and anything that sounds bad must obviously be legit and doesn’t need critical thinking.
Tumblr media
… he didn’t make a deal with Thanos. Need I remind what Tom once said about what happened to Loki between the first two movies? He said that in the void Loki ended up in a sort of seventh circle of hell where there were the worst sorts of villains and evil in the universe and that he had to navigate surviving that. We see clearly in The Avengers that he’s ended up having no choice but to do this for Thanos if he wants to survive. What he was thinking about was living.
Tumblr media
A) THEORIES? Marvel confirmed on their own dang website that there was a level of influence from the scepter. The first Avengers actively shows Loki being forced to report to The Other who in turn reports to Thanos. In Infinity War they literally had Bruce say out loud that Thanos sent Loki to New York. There’s no “theories” about it.
B) Again, I wouldn’t call that teaming up with him…
C) Sure, emotions were certainly involved. He had understandable problems with his family. More than that I’d say a desire to live was the predominant emotion. But to say that he did it just because he let his emotions get the better of him? That he more or less threw a tantrum? No. Go watch Phase 1 again. When you do I think you’ll find that the inconsistencies in his character are in the recent projects.
hi there viri!! just wanted to say its been a joy reading your recent ask answers both in regards to character analysis as well as the more. real life implications/effects of certain character representations - im generally very floaty about how i engage with fandoms so i dont pick up too much on what the General Perspectives are outside of my close circles, so its really fun to see your posts on my feed - seeing similar things to what ive been thinking put out there in post form and seeing others agree in the replies/reblogs and so on is just! nice! and relieving at times, too :] restraining myself from babbling about character analysis for an entire essay for now - just wanted to have that be said ! I Enjoy Your Thoughts and hope you will continue on with them in a way thats fun for you too! :]
Thank you so much! I can relate a lot with not interacting with people outside of your own personal bubble (I only follow a few om accounts that I generally agree with bc I have Issues and things can cause me to spiral Hard) but sometimes I just see things while looking at posts in character tags or w/e and it can just be like Do You Understand What You’re Saying.
The affects of people’s interpretation on certain characters and events can really be a look into prejudices apparent in the social consciousness (especially in a fandom where there are a Lot of cis people and young lgbt folk who don’t know the history of our oppression). Really, I just want people to examine Why they believe something untrue or exaggerated about a certain character. Is it because you’re viewing them in the lens of stereotypes based on their race, color, gender, sexuality, mannerisms, class, or disability status? Deconstructing your thought processes and how much they’re being influenced by systemic prejudice and stereotypes that are constantly being beamed into our brains via media is something I consider vital to Not Looking Like A Fool or an Asshole by someone who might fit into the group of people you are stereotyping.
The Muan-Atlantean War
And what exactly is Wold Newton?
Different sort of Gamera March post today, and a history lesson in digging through a bunch of websites I found probably 10-15 years ago that permanently influenced my take on kaiju films and how I write about them.
Readers of some of my own kaiju fandom stories (barely worth mentioning here considering the weight of what I’m about to talk about) may have noticed hints of a concept I’ve been recently building up to tackling, the origins of various Toho and Daiei kaiju and how they relate to two warring ancient civilizations, Toho’s Muans and Daiei’s Atlanteans. The story of how we got to this point begins in 1795 - yes, 1795. Really.
The Wold Newton family concept, per Wikipedia, is effectively a study of fictional universes, with the aim to figure out which of those universes might actually be the same universe after all. This exists largely outside of official crossovers, although those are often considered as evidence. The premise is basically “if it fits, it’s canon, and if it doesn’t fit, some version of it might still be canon.” AKA the absolute bane of a certain no-fun-allowed type of kaiju fan that I probably annoyed the hell out of in my younger days and remain damn proud of it. (/hj)
The concept dates back to a real meteorite that fell in the town of Wold Newton, Yorkshire in 1795, and Phillip José Farmer, a later American writer who proposed the hypothesis that many improbably strong or intelligent fictional heroes and villains are in fact descendants of two families irradiated by said meteorite. It’s since evolved to be more centered on the universe-connecting I’ve described above, but the idea of the two families seems to still be mentioned on occasion.
(Important note: Wold Newton historians thematically phrase their findings in a way that describes fictional events/characters as if they were part of a real history and dismiss contradictions between the included stories as ‘errors.’ This is not a slight against established canon or willful misinterpretation of official material, but a device meant to imply the official material is an erroneous or exaggerated retelling of the ‘true’ events as present in the Wold Newton Universe)
Which brings us to the first leg on the journey to how this is at all relevant to Gamera, the article Prehistoric Survivors in the Pacific by Mark Brown. This an oft-cited article by later kaiju writers, seeming to be the first ever suggestion that the people of Mu are responsible for the prehistoric creatures encountered by modern explorers in various fictional island adventure stories. I’ll note here that this article actually has nothing to do with Toho’s Muans, or the film Atragon, or any other kaiju films for that matter. It instead concerns other fictional depictions of the real-world hypothesis of the continent of Mu/Lemuria (proposed to explain similar lemur fossils appearing on continents separated by water and since discredited with the discovery of plate tectonics).
Among those writers that expanded on Mark Brown’s concept and adapted it to kaiju films, I specifically bring up Den Valdron and Chris N., who have done much of the most creative and scientific writing on Godzilla, Gamera, and their ilk that I have ever encountered - everything from hypothesizing what Gorath really is in true astronomical terms to a personal favorite wild theory that connects every giant spider that’s appeared in every film ever.
In constructing a kaiju universe to tell stories in, these following articles in particular are those I remembered best and find most relevant to revisit (note that all these links are to an old Angelfire site, The Godzilla Saga, and were written decades ago by Godzilla fans from decades ago, so may contain terms or phrasing that didn’t quite age well. Also note that the timeline is very, very long and may require several full days’ worth of reading to get through, if one feels inclined to make the attempt. The first article sums up the main concepts in a more digestible format, however):
THE ALIENS OF THE SHOWA TOHO UNIVERSE: COMMON ORIGINS? by Den Valdron, edits and supplements by Chris N.
GODZILLA SHOWA SERIES TIMELINE by Chris N.
To summarize, most if not all of the science fiction aspects of the Toho universe are ultimately derived from the ancient Muans - the kaiju are genetically-engineered bioweapons bred for war, the alien races are the descendants of Muan space explorers, the advanced level of modern human technology (Maser tanks, moon base in 1999, etc.) is a result of studying technology left over from the Mysterian invasion in 1957.
Likewise, one can assume similar, Atlantean-related origins for the Daiei science fiction elements (although I personally posit that the aliens seen in Showa Gamera are not actually living Atlanteans, more on that in my upcoming Gamera vs. Guiron review).
That said, these timelines for the most part do not seem to endorse putting the Toho and Daiei films and elements in the same universe. Each one only requires that the other ancient civilization exist as a rival to justify the creation of kaiju, not that that other civilization also created kaiju or that any of them survived to the present day. They also most certainly do not endorse my personal attempts to create a timeline not only involving Showa Toho and Showa Daiei, but one that includes the rest of the Godzilla and Gamera films including all five Godzilla Millennium series timelines (GMK and Final Wars need to be heavily modified), GODZILLA(1998) and its animated series, and perhaps most significantly, the Rebirth of Mothra trilogy, whose elements give some insight to events of Earth’s distant past before the Muans and Atlanteans.
But my most obvious Wold-Newtonian element may actually be the recent inclusion of a version of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in this universe - because the operative question isn’t “Why would they be there?” it’s “Why wouldn’t they be there?” There are actually quite a few stories and characters where I’ve hinted at there being at least some version of them in this universe (with the caveat that they don’t include any obvious complicating elements like superheroes or aliens or the world ending, etc.). However, and I feel this is important, when writing a story I’m careful to make sure the non-kaiju-related references have no more relevance than background details, unless the story I’m writing is tagged specifically as a crossover.
I’m not going to go over every single aspect of this timeline attempt, because that would be way too long and some of them are spoilers, but since this is Gamera March, I’ll end with my version of just the Gamera elements of this timeline (save for the aliens, which I’ll get to later, and Irys, whose origins I haven’t completely settled on yet. Also note that I include characters and elements from The Last Hope in my world-building but not the exact details of the legend). I use this timeline in the stories that are set in my main kaiju universe (only two definitively so far), but you can bet I’m probably still thinking about at least some of its elements, even in one-off stories and AUs that don’t directly follow these events.
12,000 years ago: In response to the Muans developing creatures that absorb atomic power (or similar energy) to grow larger and stronger, the Atlanteans switch from their arsenal of such weapons to one that includes a genetics program. The earliest kaiju created include Gyaos, Barugon, Jiger, and possibly Zedus, but when they (most significantly Gyaos) go rogue, the Atlanteans create Gamera to stop them - emboldened by the discovery of Universal Energy/Mana and their acquirement of Elias metals to use in the Magatama amulets to channel it (the same technology as the seal used on Desghidorah). Their efforts are ultimately futile, and Atlantis is destroyed.
12,000-10,000 years ago: Toward the start of the intervening millennia, a group of Atlantean survivors establishes an underground city near what would become New York. The purpose taken on by this city and its inhabitants is to allow Gamera to protect future civilizations from the Gyaos horde. During this time, Gamera’s reincarnation cycle is developed, including a number of eggs that would be distributed across the Earth and used as beacons to re-absorb and house Gamera’s Mana upon death. (The Atlantean survivors would also establish an observation outpost nearer to the surface, which would millennia later become home to four mutant turtles. At least one Atlantean inhabited the underground city up until that time, however, his intentions were ultimately malicious and an encounter with the mutant turtles left him imprisoned in stasis, where he could do no further harm).
10,000 years ago: The continent of Mu is destroyed by Battra after an attempt to gain control over the Earth with a weather machine. With humans now nearly extinct, the adult Gyaos turn on each other and the rest die of starvation. Gyaos eggs laid across the world during this time fail to hatch due to the recovering environment and associated increase in Mana, and would remain dormant until ecological destruction and the decline of Mana reaches another peak with modern humans.
3,000-1,500 years ago: It is unknown how many incarnations Gamera took on over the next many thousands of years, but by Magatama being discovered in association with Japanese cultures from these periods of its history, we can infer he had at least one, possibly many encounters with humanity in this stretch of time. It is unknown for what purpose he emerged or what other monsters he may have faced.
1965: Gamera, in either a new body hatched from an egg in the arctic or one that was imprisoned there at some point prior, is freed by an accidental nuclear explosion and (for reasons I will theorize in my review of the original Gamera) initially chooses to wage war on humanity. He would go on to later battle other monsters either directly or indirectly created by Atlantis (more on that upcoming in my Guiron review), including a reawakened Barugon (unconfirmed if Barugon follows a similar reincarnation cycle or if the cave contains a finite number of eggs) and the first new Gyaos of many to revive during this era.
1971: the events of Gamera vs. Zigra take place (the 1985 date appears to be an addition of Sandy Frank, who commissioned the dub in 1985, and if Super Monster is included in this timeline, it appears to necessitate these events taking place before 1980).
1973: Showa Gamera is Avant Gamera, and dies sacrificing himself against a larger swarm of Gyaos that awakens six years after the first.
1980: If Super Monster is included on this timeline (and at this point I’m leaning toward yes), then another incarnation of Gamera appears when, newly hatched, he somehow winds up placed in a pet store terrarium with other turtles. This Gamera would grow to full size over several days and sacrifice himself again to stop the Zanon spaceship.
1995: After hatching inside the atoll and growing large enough to lift it to the surface, Gamera engages another group of Gyaos, then later fights Legion and Irys (for now, I’m leaving Legion as a genuine interstellar lifeform, with no connection to the inhabitants of ancient Earth).
1999: Gamera succumbs to his wounds and dies, after his triumphant defeat of a much larger swarm of Gyaos (with the help of Godzilla Junior and the other broken-loose inhabitants of Monster Island, along with several rogue or territorial kaiju active at that time including Titanosaurus and King Cobra, in an event that becomes known as the Gyaos War).
2006: Gamera reawakens from another egg, and while only partially grown, manages to defeat Zedus. Which brings us to where our story (or one of them) begins...
Vriska: Answer white text guy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Author commentary:
It's already evident that Doc Scratch has been manipulating circumstances to help this gruesome series of events unfold. He's always there at the right moment to nudge people in the direction of doing the nasty thing that, deep down, they already know they want to do. Like any self-respecting devil figure would. A couple pages ago, you might have noticed Terezi and Aradia alluding to his presence, when Tavros was in the process of jumping off the cliff. He asked them for help, but they didn't answer. The reason apparently was that Doc was distracting them, to ensure Vriska had the time to get the job done. It also seems likely he egged her on too, given what he's saying to her here. Maybe he'd been inflaming her contempt for Tavros leading up to that moment as well? Whispering things in her ear about what a loser he is, how he'll never become strong without her "help." He'd surely know just what buttons to push.
One reading of Doc is as a manipulative devil-creep in the model of many fictional characters who fit this description; he's a fairly recognizable and traditional presence in the story, when viewed that way. A less traditional reading centers on his role on a metatextual level, as a nefarious, all-knowing, profoundly evil alt-author presence. A guy who has the full powers of the author, who essentially IS the author with certain dark authorial impulses greatly exaggerated, while functioning as a character in the story who can speak to and influence other characters in support of an evil agenda. (That is, the summoning of yet another, even more satanic alt-author being into the comic.) Viewed this way, his conversations with other characters take on a different quality. Normally, the author remains a disguised presence and influences the thoughts of characters with an unseen hand, simply by writing their thoughts directly into their heads, their words into their mouths. This alt-author is essentially doing the same thing, but as an actual character and a known presence to those he influences. He whispers in their ears, gets them to do the nasty, terrible things that are latent within their nature to do, which I as the unseen author easily could have done myself through a conventional writing process. But I outsourced that dark influence to this guy, thus establishing him as a narrative construct in the story on the same level as, but at odds with, the actual author. This surreptitiously lays the groundwork for a future point of tension: a narrative war between an Idiot God and a Genius Devil. Which, admittedly, when the shit finally hits the fan, mostly reads as one buffoon's struggle with a figment of his imagination, in the form of a wrestling match with a floppy, inanimate puppet. It's actually the perfect metaphor signifying the creative rocess behind this comic.
Doc here refers to the dark spots, the pockets of void on which his vision is built. These hint at limitations to his omniscience. As an alt-author figure, his omniscience makes sense, since the author has sweeping knowledge of story details as well. Because I "know everything," he "knows everything" too. Of course, as I write the story, there are plenty of things I don't know yet, and the "not knowing" is always an important part of the process in this largely improvisational medium. The known gaps are worked into the story, evaded through time skips and other tricks, filling out the surrounding narrative until certain answers become clearer, and then revealed at the right moment. The voids are built around, and in a real way, become foundational, almost load-bearing gaps in knowledge, just as he describes. Pillars of shadow. So his dark spots are not only a limitation to an otherwise ridiculously overpowered villain that can be exploited, they're a feature of a specific type of "authorial omniscience" copied into his profile.
Favourite Twizzle sequence
Ok so I feel like my answer to this is kinda biased on the circumstances surrounding it but without going and watching literally every twizzle sequence ever to pick a new favourite I’m still gonna say it’s this one:
Both of VM’s 2018 olys programs was my first real experience with watching ice dance with the understanding that it is different than pairs and singles (elements, structure, choreography etc).
So I don’t know whether it was purely VM, or the fact that I was really watching ice dance for the first time but inevitably the impressions those programs left on me was ‘this is what ice dance IS’. I remember I was watching the SD event live and saw several teams before VM. (I remember seeing the Shibs, but no one else really left an impression on me). They (VM) came out and it was like, this is the meaning, the definition of ice dance. This is dancing on ice. No one else is doing this.
SO. this twizzle sequence is still to this day part of what I picture when I think of the prefect ice dance program (yes, MR is perfect).
Let’s break it down:
I love the choreography going into it. The detail and the musicality. I love that he holds her elbow/upper forearm to drag her backwards-like that’s so specific but perfectly keeping with the tango style but with a contemporary influence. That arm they added where she strikes in straight up with a jazz hand- perfect! The way they hit every one of those beats in the music. There’s this thing in ballet where you are told when doing big jumps, to land with your arms held in the position you had them in the air to make the movement, picture of the position last longer. The same thing happens here with their musicality. It’s like they hit every beat with each arm, head, stroke perfectly that it creates like a echo effect, you simultaneously hear/see/feel each movement echo as they keep going, like dropping a rock in water and watching the rings reverberate out.
The first twizzle is a LBO (left, back outside edge) with free foot/leg in cou de pied (cut). Something about this particular twizzle (every time they do this one)- and I’m assuming it’s just the way it’s done- not necessarily a VM thing, but their leg positions going into it is always so precise. I’ve watched it so many times to figure it out. Coz it’s a LBO-OUTSIDE edge twizzle- I’m assuming that’s the prep for it that they have to be on an outside edge on the twizzling skate. The position they hit before it, with the front/ free leg crossed over the back and both skates on an outside edge. In dancing we would call that ankle position a ‘sickle’- when you roll outwards and turn your toes inwards. Obviously this position is for the twizzle technique- not a stylistic choice but none the less I love the very accurate position they both hit - especially for these more contemporary programs (MR and Latch it’s super obvious- could also be a change in their technique post comeback that I notice it more). So you see the position pre twizzle it ‘uglies up’ their lines which often in contemporary style is what you want- it shouldn’t always be pretty.
Anyway, once in the twizzle it almost looks like they get out of sync- but I don’t think they do, I think it’s that Scott has to travel further than her to make that corner and change direction. I think it also comes down to him having a slightly wider knee position than her.
Second set: RFI (right, forward, inside edge). The transition in between the first and second twizzle is great. I have this pet peeve with a lot of teams that add about 17 edge changes and 16 counts of chore in between twizzles (I’m exaggerating but even if they do like 3 or 4 that’s too many) to me it seems harder to go almost straight into the next twizzle coz they change direction and have to find their spot (the point they look at as they spin) without that break in between to reset. I love their catch- foot twizzles. They have hardly ever screwed them up (fallen off balance a couple of times) but they have never missed catching the blade. They are so fast and travel so far I almost thought they would run out of room for the last set.
Third set: LBI (left, back, inside edge- at least I think it counts as back, as they are travelling backwards on the prep). Again- so fast, so in sync. Then, the finish. This is one of the moments from this program that stayed with me for days, even weeks after seeing it. It’s perfect. I thought, ‘that’s how you do it’. I hadn’t seen several other teams’ programs, but whatever anyone else does, it wasn’t gonna be that good. Now after watching a tonne of ice dance, I still believe that. In general, sometimes I think about VM’s programs and the brilliant choreography they (mostly) got- from both Marina and MFP/I.AM, and the fact that their whole career they had the same choreographers as their rivals, but VM’s just comes off so much better. The comments you read on YT, things like their choreography is brilliant or their choreographers are geniuses. This is where it becomes a marriage of the choreography and the dancers. The best dancers can make bad chore into magic, but average dancers can not make magic out of brilliant choreography. So when you get the genius, inspired, poetic choreography, and you have the best dancers in the world doing that choreography, that’s unbeatable.
Running into your gym trainer Bakugou at an ice cream shop means he's playfully teasing you while you sample every flavor - even though he's doing the exact same thing, and really you only wanted to try one flavor but watching his eye twitch as you start handing him used spoons because your hands are full is worth it. You hem and haw about what flavor to get, all the while tapping one of those pink spoons against your pretty lips and Bakugou can't get over how plush they look as you pout.
When you finally do make a decision, he's all but pulling out his wallet to pay for yours while he watches you take the first lick of your favorite flavor, Love Potion.
i have finally been reading a scanlation i found of the hoshino manga! zoomed thru the fitst four volumes just now. opinions off the top of my head
-pacing sucks really really bad, its trying to do all the routes at once so its pulling late game events into early manga spaces
-dislike that julius is averse to alice getting her hands dirty with clockwork, much prefer the game's plot of her working directly with the clocks for soooo long before she even knew. i guess in general theres this notion of keeping alice innocent thats not quite the same in the game?
-julius in general feels softer a little in some ways. not that he doesnt have a lovely soft side in game but its just a bit different. him giving too strong hugs is something i am accepting as canon in my heart right now though
-YOU GUYS WERE NOT KIDDING HOSHINO BLOOD SUCKS REALLY REALLY BAD. GAME!BLOOD PICK ME UP IM SCARED
-like there was a certain comedy in gameblood being like "i recognize that your ex dating you in the past sounded like a pretty messed up situation, somethings wrong with him" but also that kinda jealous "you were in a bad relationship..... without me???". but here hes just like oh i bet it was your fault for seducing a bunch of men. and this is a fan scanlation, so it doesnt exaggerate him the way Certain Official Writers would. and its still really bad.
-he strangles her for wandering into the garden. his big animeboy hand fits right around her neck :(
-and then they do the "ill never fall in love with you!" "Good, i hate hassles" thing that....is much different in negotiating a fwb relationship that youre kind of ambivalent and guilty about than it is in BEING ALMOST KILLED....
-but also i cant take seriously any accusation of alice being too familiar with too many guys* because this isnt supposed to be HAPPENING all at once!!! this is 11 routes worth and then some of events in a big jumbled pile!!!!!!
*gamewise, it was lorina who warned her against this, come to think of it. her coming of age present lmao.
-gowland is known to being wine over to julius and hang out. I love him trying really hard to be friends with julius n julius' begrudging okay fine ill drink
-the art rocks
-game blood would kill this blood for calling alice a bitch the second shes out of earshot
-uhmmmmm i like the distinction drawn between afterimages and ghosts because afterimages are real and ghosts are supernatural creatures
-its fun seeing what in this manga influenced the musical, but it wasnt (YET) the stuff from the musical i was hoping to see
-huge shame that this was the most accessible hnkna story for such a long time :( it is not.......... great,
i binged sk8 the infinity at the weekend and i enjoyed it a lot. for a show with an ai robot skateboard and tricks that would be 100% deadly irl it’s a surprisingly grounded show.
like yes, the costumes and personas of the background characters are over the top, the villain is extra as hell and creepy af in a truly anime fashion. the skateboarding power moves are there to emphasize that this is a sports anime true to its genre. it’s all super entertaining in this classical sports anime way with really stunning animation moments. and yes, one of the protags is super gifted and becomes a top tier skater in ridiculous time.
but the skating actually feels grounded despite that. the non power move things they do are real things skateboarders do. their boards have these visual styles that feel right, there’s this street aesthetic to everything, including street art stickers. and it’s all filmed like a rl skateboarding video, like the creators watched a shit ton of those and really understood the visual language of that. (yes, i do love to the street art aesthetic in all its forms)
the other thing that feels grounded are the characters. the background ones are more comic relief and they also have these personas when they skate - i have no clue if rl skateboarders do that actually or was this done due to the anime conventions and for entertainment value - so they are extra at times and don’t get that much development but they are also endearing. the two that feel more grounded are the honorary straight, shadow, he’s such a fun character, and the brat miya, he’s got such perfect middleschooler energy.
the grounding kind of falls flat for me with the villain, my attitude to him very much mimics langa’s attitude. the dude is a great skater but he’s also weird and cringe so he’s not really interesting. i loved how langa was all the time: i really don’t give an f about your creepy personal issues, i’m not going to react to that, i just find you upsetting because you hurt my friends and also an interesting skating challenge. when they rolled out the villains back story my thoughts were: i know that’s meant to be sad and it kinda is but i also don’t care about you, now go to jail. no the subtext kink dynamic with the other guy you have going isn’t really doing it for me either, go to jail.
where the character writing shines is with the main two. they don’t have personas, they are just themselves in their daily life and during the underground skateboarding events.
reki is enthusiastic and passionate but also vulnerable in a way that’s relatable. his crisis feels very real in a teenage depression kind of way, or even an adhd rejection kind of way - though i’m not saying i think he has adhd in canon, i try not to diagnose characters, it just felt very relatable to me, a person with adhd, in how it all played out. and how the crisis is in reki’s mind very much about langa but the little detail of how it affects others was just so good. like how depression is so self-absorbing.
langa is quiet and not great in social situations but he’s very much present. he’s not standoffish and above it all, he’s really there taking everything in even if he’s sometimes slow to react to social situations. but he’s really focused on reki and attached to him and it’s just such a strong relationship. and it’s really cool how langa asks for advice and talks when the situation demands it.
because omg they talk it out like people, and that’s just rare in media period, not just manga/anime which can be extremely emotionally constipated due to its cultural background - i don’t mean that all japanese people never talk openly about their emotions or that they never had until recently or whatever but there is a certain culture of understatements in japanese language and it influences such things as pop culture cliches which deal in exaggeration and super exposing of cultural ideals. tangent aside the conversation was super real, awkward and it hit just right.
this is much longer that i planned. so just honorable mentions.
the anime really is there to cater to the shipping crowd. the two mains are very much implied to be a thing by the text of the show, and i think some creators also implied that though i’m not 100% on that. but i don’t think the show’s going to say it in open text in the following season(s) because it’s still a shonen anime. it can go fanservice all it wants but an openly queer protag in shonen is imho decades away. the rest of the cast is eyecandy very much made to cater to the female/queer gaze. while the og japanese version is subtext, though very loud subtext at times, about it, the dub apparently took it and ran with it and made it very queer.
it’s set in okinawa and that means the world to me. and it also gives a certain unique aesthetic to the show.
Herodotus and the destruction of the Acropolis of Athens by the Persians
I reproduce below a video on Herodotus and the destruction of the Acropolis of Athens by the invading Persian army of Xerxes in 480 BCE, posted by Dutch scholar Janric van Rookhuijzen on the youtube channel of Herodotus Helpline. I will explain immediately afterwards why I find the video and the revisionist theories of van Rookhuijzen problematic. I will reproduce also in this post a text by an important American Classical archaeologist (John McKesson Camp), which summarizes the current consensus among scholars on the reality of the destruction of the Acropolis by Xerxes.
youtube
Now, my remarks on van Rookhuijzen's video:
In this video van Rookhuijzen essentially dismisses gratuitously all the ancient Greek sources about the destruction of the Acropolis of Athens by Xerxes.
He also essentially and equally gratuitously dismisses the academic consensus which prevails today among historians and archaeologists about the reality of the destruction of the Acropolis by the Persians, with as main argument that this consensus would be just a product of the influence of Herodotus, of Eurocentric ideology and of Orientalism, an argument which is very weak and in fact itself very ideological.
The truth is that van Rookhuijzen has more generally his own idiosyncratic revisionist theories on the Acropolis that almost none other scholar shares, for instance that what we know as the Parthenon and the Erechtheion ....are not the real Parthenon and Erechtheion!
Moreover, obviously he does not have much sympathy for the struggles of the Greeks for independence and liberation of their land from the foreign yoke (that he sees in outrageous way as "Greek conquests of Turkish and Bulgarian territories"!) or for philhellenism.
(Btw a person posted some days ago on this site the same video, with the comment that they would have learned from it "how german racist nationalism in archaeology influenced greek racist nationalism using Herodotus"! This is a very stupid comment and shows serious deficiency of historical knowledge from the part of the person who made it- moreover, it exaggerates grossly what even van Rookhuijzen claims. Really, since when "Greek racist nationalism" would be something comparable to the very real German racist nationalism, which caused two world wars, genocides, and immense suffering in humanity? I would add for the sake of the historical education of the person that made this comment that the Greeks paid a very heavy price for their resistance to German racist nationalism in its most extreme form -nazism- in WW II).
To clarify my position, I don't deny that the destruction of the Acropolis by Xerxes, an event with a very serious impact on the collective memory and identity of the Athenians and more generally of the ancient Greeks, has been used ideologially in modern times to justify theories about the inherent barbaric character of the East and the unescapable character of the conflict of the West with it, in a historical period of domination of the world by Western colonialism. But historical events are open to different evaluations of their significance in the more general historical process and, if we disagree with a given evaluation or exploitation of an event, it would be totally erroneous to deny the very reality of this event, if there are good reasons to accept it as real, as it is the case with the dectruction of the Acropolis by Xerxes. To put it differently, if we want to reject the exploitation in the past of the destruction of the Acropolis by Xerxes' Persians in the service of theories about the inevitable eternal conflict between East and West and about the inherently despotic and barbaric character of the East, it would be totally unnecessary and wrong to try to deny against the academic consensus and practically with no solid argument the very reality of this destruction. We cannot accept or refuse the historicity of events according to our more general ideological and philosophical positions, even if our positions and intentions are the best, although of course we can refute particular evaluations and interpretations of the same events. On the other hand, it is obvious to me that the replacement of Eurocentric views of the past with views idealizing the empires of the East like the Achaemenid Persian Empire and denying the historical importance of the fight of the Greek city-states to maintain their freedom face to the Achaemenid imperial expansionism, as it is fashionable today to see things in some quarters, would not be a progress.
I add that, if it is true that the argument of the struggle against Oriental despotism has been used often by Greeks and philellenes to gather support for the Greek War of Independence and the other wars of liberation fought by the Greeks, it is equally true that the Ottoman empire was really despotic and oppressive and often even barbaric towards the peoples conquered by it, especially when the latter revolted. Therefore, one should not confuse the use of this argument by Greeks and philellenes in the context of the Greek struggles for national liberation with the use of similar arguments about Oriental despotism in the service of the justification of the Western colonial expansion, as the contexts of these uses were very different.
And now I will reproduce the first paragraphs of a text by John McKesson Camp,  Director of the Athenian Agora Excavations at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Professor of Classics at Randolph-Macon College, to show what is the current scholarly consensus about the reliability of the ancient Greek sources concerning the destruction of the Acropolis of Athens by Xerxes (John McKesson Camp "The Persian Destruction of Athens. Sources and Archaeology", in the collective volume of S. Fachard-E.M. Harris (editors) The Destruction of Cities in the Ancient Greek World. Integrating the Archaeological and Literary Evidence, Cambridge University Press 2021, pp 70-84, text available in its entirety on https://newdiscoveries.sites.uu.nl/wp-content/uploads/sites/712/2022/04/The-Persian-Destruction-of-Athens.pdf ):
"DESTRUCTION
The Sources The Persian sack of Athens in 480/479 B.C. is one of the landmarks both for Greek archaeology and the history of Athens. Thucydides and Herodotos are concise but absolutely unequivocal as to the damage done. Herodotos gives the more detailed account of the actual events, telling us that Xerxes, when he took the citadel: “plundered the temple and burned the entire acropolis” (8.53) and when, ten months after the battle of Salamis, and having wintered in Thessaly, the Persian general Mardonios returned and occupied Athens and then withdrew to Plataia, he “first burnt Athens, and utterly overthrew and demolished whatever wall or house or temple was left standing” (9.13). Thucydides, setting the stage for his description of the Themistoklean wall writes: “For of the encircling wall only small portions were left standing and most of the houses were in ruins, only a few remaining in which the chief men of the Persians had themselves taken quarters” (1.89). Diodoros Siculus gives the longest account of all, drawing on sources other than Herodotos or Thucydides. For the first attack, “Xerxes entered Attika and ravaged the countryside, and then he razed Athens to the ground and sent up in flames the temples of the gods. And while the king was concerned with these affairs, his fleet sailed from Euboia to Attika, having sacked on the way both Euboia and the coast of Attika” (11.14). And for the second assault and occupation: “Mardonios was so angry with them that he ravaged the entire countryside, razed the city to the ground, and utterly destroyed the temples that were still standing” (11.28.6). So, there we have it. Athens was wiped off the map. The literary sources are clear and largely unanimous as to the extent of the destruction: total. The primary question we are asked to consider is: “How reliable are the sources?” Our best way of checking is to turn to the archaeology.1
THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL EVIDENCE: ATHENS AND ATTIKA
When we consider the archaeology of Athens in the early fifth century B.C., we find ample evidence of Persian destruction. On the acropolis, the Old Temple of Athena – made of limestone, with marble trim and pedimental figures of a gigantomachy – was destroyed. So was the Older Parthenon, with its superstructure of marble, unfinished and under construction at the time. The Older Propylon which gave access to the sanctuary, and the Archaic version of the Athena Nike temple were also destroyed. That is, all three Archaic temples dedicated to Athena and the gateway into the sanctuary were all destroyed in the first half of the fifth century B.C. Also ruined were several small limestone Doric buildings, decorated with pedimental sculpture, all recently restudied by N. Klein, and often referred to as “treasuries” because of their similarity to buildings at Olympia, Delphi, Delos, and perhaps Nemea.2 In addition to buildings, broken votive sculptures of korai and animals, marble perirrhanteria, inscribed bases, and shattered votive pottery were found in great numbers. Dozens of scholars of different disciplines – architecture, pottery, sculpture, stratigraphy, and epigraphy – have been over the evidence with a fine-toothed comb, and there are few if any dissenting voices expressing doubt that the acropolis fared as recorded in our sources. The evidence shows that the buildings and sculptural monuments of the principal sanctuary of Athena were reduced to rubble, burned or broken, or both."
thoughts on volume 9 of real:
Tumblr media
YEAAAAAHHH YES YES YES YES YES IT'S HAPPENING IT'S FINALLY HAPPENING THE PATHS ARE CROSSING THE PLOTS ARE MERGING THE SKIES ARE OPENING UP AND TAKAHASHI!! IS!! BALLING!!!
ok. not really. that is an exaggeration. but takahashi has Remembered Kiyoharu. which means that he is now privy to the idea that he might play basketball again which means his search for a Goal that he was so hung up about in this volume might finally pay off.
merry christmas everyone btw. anyway we have That Big Plot Development. other thoughts:
shiratori is growing on me. it's always the characters i start off hating that i grow to like eventually. he's not that bad of an influence on takahashi. someone for him to talk to at least.
Tumblr media
ah love this character dynamic. two weird men and their cranky teenage son they forcibly adopted. old man yaoi question mark?
now that i think about it this series doesn't have much in the way of homoerotic subtext. probably because the leads aren't all on a team Together and Being On A Sports Team Together is usually where the homoerotic subtext in sports manga comes from. aside from the fact that everyone nomiya meets falls begrudgingly in love with him a little and that includes kiyoharu and takahashi. i'm not even doing that much shipping in general and when i am i'm rooting for the (hopefully) Canon Straight Couples.
but if we want to mine for homoerotic subtext there's this moment with nomiya and (who he thinks is) takahashi:
Tumblr media
which directly parallels a scene nomiya had with natsumi, his female love interest, in the first volume. probably just an in-joke coming back again but i see everything through yaoi glasses.
back to canon straight couples for a second. kiyoharu and azumi still aren't together. really torturing me with this slow burn aren't they. come on guys!! you have to get married while yama is still alive to be the best man!!
still dissatisfied with where kiyoharu's plotline currently is but we have a Hook to something that might cause some Effects. the upcoming training camp. at least two months have passed in the narrative since we heard from yama. azumi has noticed something off about kiyoharu.
Tumblr media
show me the struggle please!! i want to see your internal torment!! and sit down!!
it really is just the lack of tension that's tormenting me about kiyoharu's plotline. he's not really Moving Toward anything at the moment other than just generally Being Good, so compared to takahashi and nomiya it feels like nothing's really happening with him. i probably just need to be more patient lol
Tumblr media
pool scene. thomas c. foster how to read literature like a professor that i was forced to study my senior year of high school says every time a character is immersed in water it's a symbolic rebirth. a baptism in a sense. and i hate to concede defeat to ap literature and composition but i think he's on to something. the introduction of the athletics instructor (hara-sensei) is a new milestone in takahashi's rehabilitation, and it's through hara that he enters a gym for the first time since before his accident. and the last major thing that happened to him in a gym was the two-on-two match in volume one against nomiya and kiyoharu.
it took this long for takahashi to remember kiyoharu because he wasn’t ready until now. but now the plot events have come together to make him ready---he’s making progress in his rehabilitation, his character development is underway, the athletics instructor at the rehab facility has been introduced, and takahashi is now thinking about a long-term goal. all it took was nomiya showing up, because nomiya has a positive influence on everyone he meets.
so this reintroduction of basketball into takahashi's life is a symbolic rebirth. mrs. simpson give me an a+ please.
if takahashi really does start playing basketball he'd likely be a class 1 player. the tigers need another class 1 player. i hope this goes where i think it's going.
ending the christmas post with kiyoharu color page because despite my dissatisfaction with the current state of his plotline he's still my babygirl and i want him so bad. ignore my fuck ass thumb in the frame lol
Why do you have to watch MONSTER?
There are eternal anime, with stories so captivating that they are impossible to forget. One of those series is Monster, which when you finish it, leaves you with a feeling of emptiness and sadness. That’s why I want you to watch it.
Tumblr media
Monster is a psychological thriller created by famous mangaka Naoki Urasawa in 1994 and its animation was made in 2004. The story takes place in Germany in the 1980s, specifically, in the Düsseldorf hospital where the Japanese neurosurgeon Kenzo Tenma works. It all begins when he decides to operate on a child injured by a bullet in the head instead of listening to his superiors.This decision causes Tenma to lose everything he had, but in addition, strange events begin to occur around him and he ends up realizing the consequences of this kind action, which now leads him into darkness.
Tumblr media
The main point of the story is to try to answer the question: Are monsters born or created? With this question in mind, the series begins to develop in an extraordinary way, where more and more secrets and mysteries are discovered, and everything becomes so complex that you must stop the episode to think about everything that has happened. Also, incredible character development is shown, where you share the protagonist's emotions and suffer with him. Emotions like guilt, sadness, anger and confusion.
What I like about this series is that it talks about quite complex topics, such as humanity, evil, morality, etc. The series shows the darkness that can exist in a person, but also how childhood influences their development. It talks about hate and cruelty, but also about love and the importance of being kind to everyone. Some people think that the story is exaggerated, but I believe that it is real, that people, humanity can be like this, in order to have power.
The anime leaves you thinking about these complex and deep topics, it makes you question things and how they work. That is why I recommend that you watch this fantastic series and discover the truth about the monsters that exist in the world.
