i just do really. want people who watch yellowjackets and talk about ghost jackie to have some awareness of how she's a manifestation of SHAUNA'S grief and guilt and how that informs how she acts and talks when we see her onscreen. like... she's actually not that cruel in real life. her mannerisms and her expressions and the things she says are MUCH colder and crueller and meaner than she really was. it's shauna's coping mechanism. 'if she was mean and cold and cruel like this then it's not my fault that we had a big fight and i made her leave and she died.' 'if she was awful in real life i don't have to hold on to this guilt i carry.' 'if it was really her doing we had that big fight because she was so mean then i don't have to blame myself.' 'it wasn't your fault.' 'i know.' shauna is always always looking for jackie to absolve her of blame through the invented version of her she holds in her head, whether because she's so mean their fight can't be shauna's fault or by having jackie directly say it to her. when ghost jackie says 'we were just kids. and it was awful', that's the closest shauna gets to who jackie was as a person and as a friend. the girl who gave shauna her last piece of food because she was hungry. the girl who gave shauna the necklace for good luck. the girl who stole the pills to help shauna relax on the plane because she remembered she was scared the last time they flew together. and i think it's telling that it's a jackie we might actually recognise as the real version that tells shauna they were just kids and offers her some sort of the absolution she's desperately searching for. a nastier jackie she's made up to make herself feel less guilty can't really absolve her. she needs a jackie that's real, one she recognises, for true absolution. well a semblance of it anyway, because she'll never completely be able to let go of all her guilt because even that jackie that comes close isn't real, isn't alive, can't truly absolve her, and the reason she's not there to do that, shauna believes, is because she killed her fucking kill me. that's, like, haunting 101.
