I'm bored...I'm gonna analyse a GIF.

This year marks Ed, Edd n Eddy's 25th anniversary. I may not talk about it much on this blog, but it's one of my all time favourite cartoons. I'd watch it constantly during my childhood and to this day "Big Picture Show" is my favourite series finale. So, given how much I enjoy the show, I was happy to see more tweets about it than usual on my Twitter (yes I'm still calling it that) timeline because of the anniversary.

The influx of tweets (yes I'm still calling them that) about the show led me to this tweet. There's a very good analysis of the moment here on Tumblr, but here's a screenshot from a reply under the tweet of what the user said.

It made me think of other similar moments of character acting in animation, and of course I started thinking of examples from Animaniacs.

There's many to be found across the original show and the reboot, but one example I really like is this moment here:

For context, all three Warners are making similar jokes about the size of a hunter's feet.

It's not the dialogue I wanna talk about, this moment is brief and ultimately not that important, but I just love how the Warners are animated here. It tells you a lot about them based only on the character acting and body language:

Yakko

Yakko is the first to come onscreen to make a comment, indicating that he's the leader. He calmy walks into frame holding one hand out conversationally, before standing with both arms behind his back. Compared to the other two's stances, this makes him look more reserved and professional. This not only indicates that he's older, but also suggests he's cool-headed and not as reliant on physical action as his sibs, hence why his arms are behind his back; he only really needs his voice. He gives a smug grin, so even without hearing what he's saying you know he's being snarky right now, which contrasts with his body language, showing he's purposefully maintaining a deceptively non-aggressive demeanour and is likely a smart aleck in general.

Wakko

Wakko is the only one who doesn't come in from the side, instead he enters frame from below, indicating that he's the most unconventional of the three. He flails his arms around rather than keeping them in one place like Yakko, which not only suggests that he's more wild and energetic, but (as I said earlier) is more reliant on physical action than Yakko. Wakko does a sort of "don't worry about it" motion with his left arm with a simple smile on his face, a smile that lacks any smugness. This suggests that he's a little friendlier in comparison. He sticks out his tongue like a dog and eventually settles on T-rex arms, indicating that he's more animalistic than his sibs.

Dot

Dot quickly hops into frame from the side, almost like a pounce, with a determined and somewhat aggressive facial expression, showing energy and spunk. She punches the air, which only emphasizes her feistiness. Her movements suggest she's more prone to being outwardly aggressive than her brothers. Her expression softens to more of a cute smile, showing that she's not all aggression and is quite cute and jovial too. She settles with her hands on her hips, a typical pose used to show that a character is sassy and/or confident, hence indicating that Dot is too.

Basically I just think the way animation can be used to establish characters without us having to hear a word out of them is really cool.

It’s modern time babeyyyy

* This au does take place in modern day but it technically “starts” in the late 90s bc it’s a Narinder and Lamb were childhood best friends au :))

* I honestly have the most ideas for when they’re in high school but I’ll get to that in a bit (also should say this was inspired by that one prom post from redcrowncafe where Lamb talks about their prom date who was an asshole and wishes they knew Narinder then so they could’ve gone with each other. Saw that and thought “okay but what if they did” and that spiraled out of control)

* I’ve yet to say that my personal headcanon for Lamb’s family is that they had two moms, and three younger siblings (a sister about 12 years younger, and 18 years younger twins; one male one amab gender-fluid). The twins don’t show up till Lamb is, well, 18 tho so they won’t come up much yet

* The Bishops (Bishop is just their last name here) are all foster siblings who have shitty foster parents. Shamura stays even a bit into their early 20s because of this since they don’t want to leave their younger siblings alone with those two. The foster parents’ were abusive in multiple ways, and they also kept any money the Bishop’s respective parents might’ve left for their offspring to themselves (spoiler: Shamura’s in particular were LOADED and so when the Bishops are finally away from these two they’re pretty much set for life). It’s after a particularly scary night where a two year old Leshy and a six year old Heket are threatened while Shamura and the parents are arguing that something in Shamura snaps and they begin to plan to murder their foster parents. Yay!

* I don’t have the details but they in fact /do/ kill them. Thing is they’re super smart about it and hardly any evidence can be traced back to them. It is a small town though so there aren’t too many suspects and overall the one who would have the motive and probable method would be Shamura (unless they wanna try and pin it of 13 year old Kallamar or 8 year old Narinder). Thing is, their foster parents? No one liked them. So no one’s gonna point fingers. The police try and press people to give a suspect but no one does. So the case goes cold. But, even though no one liked the two, murder is still frowned upon by most so the siblings move away.

* But BEFORE all that let me explain a bit about Nari and Lamb’s friendship: they met in kindergarten (idk why they’re in the same grade when I hc Lamb to be a year older but shhh) and while Narinder tried to act “cool” and “aloof” Lamb was having none of it and dragged him along on little kid adventures like playing in the mud and pretending to be power rangers. Also almost from the get go Nari had a little crush on Lamb lol. Since Nari and his sibs move away when he’s 8, these two knew each other for 3 years. Idk what all happens in that time. Like I said most of what I’ve thought up for this au (mainly about Narilamb) happens in their high school years. It is thanks to their play dates at each others houses that Lamb figures out that being nonbinary is a thing from Shamura and is like “Wait… Me too???”

* After the move, Nari and Lamb stay connected through letters and phone calls. They also send pictures of all kinds of things, mainly of themselves so the other “won’t forget what I look like!” Neither make many lasting friends, at least, not ones around the same age as them (Lamb befriends Ratau and his buddies. Narinder befriends kind library assistant Forneus and her two twin sons).

* Lamb is loud and proud about who they are, which unfortunately makes them targeted for bullying, though it’s not just for their gender, it’s also because of their - Idk a better word than quirky Sorry - personality and the rumors about their long distance best friend; there’s multiple rumors, like that he doesn’t exist (this comes from those who don’t know much about the whole Bishop family scandal) or that he’s a murderer, just like his older sibling (this comes from those that /do/ know, ofc)

* Btw over the course of these years they’ve been apart Nari’s crush has only grown and Lamb has also gained a crush on Nari themself

* OKAY OKAY OKAY OKAY TIME FOR THE BIT I HAVE THE MOST OF AN IDEA FOR GET READY (it’s super cheesy and corny and honestly feels like a Disney channel original movie but this fandom could use a little more of that imo so let me live)

* So, I know some schools would let Juniors have their own prom. Let’s say Lamb’s school does that. They had been asked by some guy to be his prom date and figured “why not?” and accepted. Thing is the guy asked if they could buy his ticket, and being the nice person (yet to decide if this is also a human au or if they’re still all animals) they are they do so. The guy then just takes the ticket and tells them to get lost. Lamb didn’t like the guy but it still hurt to have their kindness taken advantage of. They tell Narinder all about it and admit they probably won’t even go to the prom, even though they already bought a ticket and outfit. Nari, who Lamb can’t see bc it’s just a phone call, is absolutely SEETHING.

* Now Narinder has a mission: Get a tux, flowers, and other gifts. Convince Shamura to let him go in his truck (yeah he drives a truck in this au, idk it’s just the car I imagined when I thought it up lol) and be away from home for a few of days (it would take about a day to drive there, then he’d want to stay for at least one or two, then another to drive back). Shamura is reluctant (that town holds a lot of bad memories and him being so far away when he’s only 16 is scary), but seeing the determination in his eyes makes them relent.

* He calls Lamb’s moms and lets them know his plan, but wants it to be a surprise. They both agree to convince them to go to prom even if they will be going alone, without letting it slip that they will have a prom date after all.

* Prom night comes around, and Lamb, who is dressed in a tux-dress combo, is confused as to why their moms, who were so insistent that they go, aren’t ready to take them? (Projecting my reluctance to learn to drive onto them here, so that’s why they can’t drive themself). Then the doorbell rings. They answer and see Narinder (who is now like a foot taller wow couldn’t tell that in the photos he sent) in a tuxedo holding a bouquet and corsage. He’s got a nervous smile on his face as he says “I know it’s a little last minute, but will you allow me to accompany you to prom?”

* Almost a full minute passes in silence, making Nari sweat and begin to regret doing all of this. Then he gets jumped by Lamb into a hug that topples them both to the ground as they scream “YES!!!”. Thankfully they aren’t hurt and their formal wear is alright, though they wouldn’t notice otherwise, their focuses only on each other’s laughter and presence.

* When he opens the passenger door for them there’s a basket of treats, jewelry and a black cat plushie. “Ohh, Narinderrrr! You’re making me feel like I’m royalty!” “You are, to me.” *pause as they look at each other in flustered silence* “A-ANYWAYS WERE SHOULD GET GOING RIGHT?” “OH YEAH YOURE RIGHT. Uh, help me up?” He helps them climb into their seat, close the door, and silently screams about how dumb that was (while Lamb is inside internally screams about how sweet that was and oh no they think they’re falling for him)

* They get there (Yeah I realized Nari doesn’t have a ticket but let’s say somehow there was enough for him to buy one at the entrance) and they’re having a good time (only barely noticing the looks they’re getting and the whispers of “Isn’t that one of the Bishop siblings? Figures Lamb would have to settle for a murderer to be their date.”), dancing, eating and drinking the possibly spiked punch. I’m sorry to say some hurt is about to happen

* They have a run in with the guy who tricked Lamb and Nari almost breaks the guys nose before Lamb pulls him away saying it’s not worth it. He’s about to disagree and say something embarrassing again like “maybe /he’s/ not worth it but /you/ are and he hurt you so he deserves to be punched” when a girl “accidentally” spills her whole cup of punch onto Lamb’s outfit. Everyone around them laughs and Lamb, barely blinking back tears, runs out of the building. Narinder growls at them all and runs after Lamb.

* He finds them curled up by a tree outside, and sits down next to them. He tries to comfort them but they sob out “Just take me back home.” He agrees to do so, but tells them to go wash up a bit in the bathroom while he gets something. As they’re washing up he knocks on the door and asks to come in. They let him and see he’s holding a box. He tells them he planned on giving it to them later after Prom for something else he had planned but figured they’d just go now since Lamb didn’t want to stay anymore. He hands it to them and says he’ll be waiting outside.

* Surprise! It’s another outfit :)) It’s a bit more cozy than what they were wearing before, but still fit for “royalty”. And a black crown with a big red jewel inlaid in the middle-front

* They get dressed and marvel in the mirror before going back out. Narinder’s heart skips a beat when he sees them.

* Idk what to put in between so let’s skip ahead to when they’ve arrived at a spot out in the open wilderness where it’s easier to star gaze. He sets up the trunk bed to be comfy and reveals he had a cooler and basket of food for them to have a night picnic under the stars.

* After they’ve eaten some, one thing leads to another, and then Lamb pulls Narinder into a kiss. They both confess and spend the rest of their time cuddling (until Lamb gets a phone call from their very nervous moms because of how late it’s getting and they’re not home yet lol)

* I have more ideas but to sum them up for now: The rest of this AU is just Narilamb long distance relationship angst & fluff. Eventually the Bishops move back to the small town and then it’s not long distance narilamb (and eventual leshycat and whatever else).

* I will say this: Another murder will happen, this time it’s Lamb who commits it. That’s all I’m giving y’all ;))c

saw the poll about least liked Batfam but decided to make my own post.

Dick Grayson was the first robin. After learning more about him the less I know why he exists. He’s childish and funny. Probably so Batman wasn’t lonely but couldn’t influence Batman in any way. But then he stopped being that so idk. Batman copycat? But slightly likable but only because his friends make him better.

Jason Todd was hated on for being a kid so he got all these “unlikable” qualities (poverty, drug addiction) and became an unlikable person. He’s alright.

Tim Drake was made to be relatable to a certain audience and it shows.He only perpetuates the Batman industry that should’ve ended years ago.

Damian was created to perpetuate the bloodline to cater to nepotism. But i think they chose Talia so Batman could take him away from her. But it backfired. If we focus on caring about Talia we can expand the conversation about a non white woman again.

Barbara Gordon was created to be a FUCKING love interest. Then to cater to feminists but (mostly) the only the way sexists know how to. But after getting fridged; A wonderful writer made her into an advocate for disabled (handicap). Intersectionality got more supporters to care about her, which is deserved. (Sidenote: Babs reminds me of my very cool competent older sister. So she also unerves me but like in a good way if I wasn’t a younger sib)

Duke Thomas is pretty relatable for a black teen; and he also joined a movement for children taking back their rights (self defense). And introduced the WAR characters which is nice to focus on minority stories again.

Cass is THE asian american diaspora. And her rewritten stereotypes is such a cool way to humanize caricatures AMAZING.

Stephanie Brown was a love interest. Taken down to boost up Tim. Too impulsive to be Robin and left out of stories. Those are the bad stuff. The good stuff is that she’s like Jason ( positive). Stands up against her abusive father. Still sorta close with her mother. Cass’s friend. Okay i lied. There’s one more bad thing about Steph. She’s also like Jason (negative). (And it makes me scared to talk about it because i think there’s some kind of internet thingy about r*df*ms which I don’t agree with because of it’s white superiority centric stuff 😓).

So it’s between Dick, Tim, Steph, and Jason. Downsizing to Tim, Steph and Jason because Dick and the Teen Titans are great. Downsizing to Steph and Jason because Tim came out as bisexual which is ironic but also serves the same reason why Kate was retconned to be lesbian, because it’s a fuck you to the homophobes from the Batman controversies of the past :)

I genuinely believe Steph and Jason could be better, but it’s tough. It’s really tough. I’m downsizing to just Steph because Jason’s relationship with Bizzaro was sweet, and he could have friends like with Rose and Artemis (is she allowed to use that name? Lol) and sorta is already.

Steph isn’t really- i mean, idk. She doesn’t pull in new characters or dynamics, she doesn’t have a narrative relating to Gotham besides her resolved daddy issues which were resolved. The issue could be solved if she joined her own team? Like why is she so lonely bro. She could easily be a good character.

Coming back around to say Dick becoming the new Batman copycat or just whatever self insert writers wanna say, it’s a huge issue. Honestly, the amount of vagueness he is, is annoying. Genuinely goes back to the root core issue, Batman. Dick is barely his own person. All the changes isn’t even because of him anymore. He was taken away from his own backstory just to be for Batman. How dehumanizing is that? He’s just your spokes person supporter cheerleader for whatever you wanna say, and the DC writers sure had a lot of shit to say.

It’s tough. In conclusion, I gotta stop interacting with Batman man. I only joined because of the rouges honestly, but I get it with child rights so of course I’d get to know the batfam, but everything about the batfam fandom has really irritated me. No one here seems to care about children which is ironic

I guess it’s a tie between Dick Tim Jason Steph. Or Dick Tim. They’re boring.

#i had a nightmare a few nights ago..#and then i had a bad dream last night (+ one good one)#me and cecil were fighting -__- and i thought someone killed him and started flipping out but it turns out he just didnt wanna talk to me #and then the other was i was hanging out w all the new band freshmen and taking them fun places #which eventually led to a swamp for a wedding ×.× and then we had to get on busses #i think the main point was beibg a nice guardian/cool older sib figure or something everyone loved me <3 #text tag #410 #dj

So, we've had Lucemon CM with a mother tamer, but hear me out... Cool Big Sib Tamer. Y'know, the one who is like 'you got a 80% on your math test?? Cool, wanna get ice cream to celebrate?'. And they just like,,, will throw hands with anyone who insults/threatens him. Like, they know he's super strong but he looks ten?? Also thank you for everything you write,gabs you're the best ❤️

Lucemon Control Mode with a Cool Big Sibling Tamer

Admittedly... Lucemon doesn't really know how to handle a Tamer like this. Perhaps it's because he doesn't quite understand their whole energy, as Digimon don't normally have siblings -- as even then it's incredibly a rare thing. So when his Tamer acts like an older sibling in ways, he tilts his head in confusion.

Now, he isn't going to complain of course. He finds their energy rather amusing in its own way. Especially when they try to throw hands with those who try to poke fun or threaten Lucemon. He can perfectly handle himself, being more than capable of dealing with those who would dare try, but it is quite funny to see how his Tamer acts first before he intervenes.

Lucemon does have his moments where he does act like an actual child, for as wise and as powerful as he is, he's not immune to praise and the offering of treats. He's also a Rookie level Digimon, and as such, he does adore his sweets. If he does something impressive, and his Tamer offers to take him out for sweets, one can be best assured he's going to get rather excited about it!

His Tamer showing him things that they enjoy is a definite, and he'd show an interest in what they present him. Any type of game or movie, he does get curious about. For as knowledgeable as he is, human culture is still a bit lost on him. All that he knows is fairly outdated, so he looks forward to learning more.

Lucemon is also very much not immune to offerings of piggyback rides. He may be able to float and fly thanks to his wings, but if his Tamer offers it, he won't say no! There's just something about not having to use his own abilities to be up high that's nice. And resting up on his Tamer's shoulders gives him a great view point. He definitely uses it when he must. Or when it's presented.

He's simply not sure what it is, really. Human culture, especially sibling culture, is strange to him and he takes note of everything they do together. It's all fascinating to him, and he finds himself enjoying a lot more than he thought he would.

welcome to my saw trap where i ramble at you abt my silver hcsanyways, meet his family! theyre all kids (except for mama izu) born with special chaos powers, all from different ruined/deleted timelines.

many years ago a teenage izu, who has the power to weave "fate webs", originally used pieces of a shattered master emerald to build her own safe haven semi outside of the main timeline stream with her plan being to use her powers to travel to different ruined or doomed futures and prevent them. a few years later, she found two echidna children and a dying master emerald that were in a timeline beyond repair and took them back with her. over time she just kept... collecting kids, to the point she just has a lil family now. the healed master emerald just adds a new room onto their haven whenever she finds a new child. after a while, the kids start growing up and they wanna help her out in saving the future - which is how silver keeps coming back, and also where he goes once he saves the world

izu the spider is based on a juro spider. theyre a real cool lookin spider and ive wanted to make an oc of one for a while! in terms of personality izu is quite,,, spacey. she's spent a lot of time alone and a lot more in desolute timelines and its left her a lil traumatized - but she loves her kids so much, and would do anything for them. shes very fun and playful and has an odd habit of thinking out loud.

reutov the raccoon dog (ignore how i mispelt raccoon it is so late). the youngest member of the family at 8, and an absolute little shit. they have "kid on fortnite" energy. literally the cringest little baby i love them so much. reutov's chaos power is they can sorta teleport by breaking themself down on a molecular level and reassemble somewhere else. they also got lightning powers that they get by vibrating their atoms really quick. since they were a baby when their future was destroyed they dont really remember it or where they came from.

mirador the echidna is the older of the echinda sibs, and i designed her before but heres a quick redesign. same personality: deadpan, duty driven, big ole strong girl. she can control shadows. both mirador and her brother lucea were raised by a spirit inside the emerald (tikal) who kept them safe as she could and taught them what they needed to know before izu found them. being the first to be adopted by izu and coming as a pair, mira originally clung to her brother and didn't want them forming bonds with the other kids. this softened over time, but still she tries to keep the others a little at arms length - lucea may have forgotten how the world fell to ruin, but mirador didn't.

lucea the echidna is the younger echidna sib. he hates everything about being stuck at home guarding the master emerald for a lotta reasons, the big one being she cant use her chaos power - the ability to manipulate solar energy into a physical shape - since their home is outside of time and thus no sun. he's pretty mean, but in a sibling sorta way and usually doesnt go too far. lucea is massively insecure and covers it up by pretending shes the coolest kid in the world. gets on great with reutov

venice the hedgehog. yeah, turns out silver is a nickname! most of his family call him silver, the exception being izu or if hes in trouble or about to get pranked. almost got wiped outta existence due to the stable timeloop in 06, but blaze managed to get him sent as a baby to izu.

florence the tenrec is gold the tenrec from archie. she probably started the same as archie gold, kinda meek and shy but her time with her family made her a lot bolder - she and lucea can be nightmarish together. originally i had her telepathy active and she was encouraging silver to fight lucea but since this is a ref photo i decided against it. also a slightly different outfit - she probably still has her canon outfit, this is just,, easier for me to draw tbh

Keep getting nostalgia for this time as a teen when it was raining a lot and the weather was just lovely. I wanna say it was either Spring or Fall of 2014. My only clues to go off of are random images/memories linked to this feeling: the song Rather Be by Clean Bandit, the movie The Wolverine, and images of everyday life in an overcast seaside city in Japan. In this nostalgic memory I also remember working on schoolwork at the dinner table with the slider open to let the cool, fresh air in. It’s something about this weather rn. It’s just my favorite. And this nostalgia brings me back to a time when my mind was calm and my heart was happy. This weather is also taking me back to Sundays when I was still a kid. As a Mormon back then, Sundays were spent at church for 3 hours and then at home with family for the rest of the day—when I was real young we also couldn’t play video games or watch non-Mormon tv/movies. But that was honestly really nice and all that time chillin at home on a day without any other big commotion is why I remember how the weather felt on those days. While I don’t miss being Mormon whatsoever, I do miss how I felt before the mental illness that stemmed from it set in. And ofc I miss that quality time with all my older sibs. Oh sweet sweet nostalgia. This weather really is lovey.

My two entries for the I Hope So OC contest! But I love them so much I’m gonna draw them more after the contest bc they’re my kids now

I came up with two characters. Dusty the half-tsavo lion, and Fern the leopon!

(I keep mistyping Fern as Ferns, sorry if you see that)

These two I like to imagine as a duo, Travellers who like exploring the world, but I’m gonna talk about them as singulars under the cut. which basically is bg info, fun facts, and also how I think they’d interact w/ the protags!

Dusty:

Backstory: Dusty was born in a small pride, however he wasn’t the son of the king of said pride. His mother and the king had a toxic relationship and he was born from an event of her having her litter sired by a wandering lion (A tsavo) to try and spite the king.

Despite that, Dusty got along great with his stepdad, it’s just that his mom was a really petty lion that didn’t like the fact that the king paid attention to all the lionesses/cubs in the pride, not just her or her kids. Dusty decided to leave to see the world and he was rly sick of his parent’s on-off arguing (which annoyed the rest of the pride but he and his half-sibs were caught in the mid), so he left with some of his siblings to become Travellers (King Stepdad didn’t mind, he just wanted his kids/subjects to be happy, Dusty aspires to be as kind as his stepdad)

Due to his upbringing, Dusty values loyalty the most, and he’s got a bit of a temper from his mom, but he usually tries to keep his cool. He might seem grumpy, but Dusty’s a pretty chill dude that will give you dad advice

Fun Facts:

-Most of his features are from his sire, like his color and eyes

-His markings are mostly from his mom’s side

-Dusty had a different name at birth (I’d like to think his pride had a naming theme on nature stuff) but he changed it when he left

-Dusty travelled with his siblings until they found a pride they liked, Dusty wanted to explore more so they parted ways, he’ll sometimes wander back to that pride territory to tell his sibs about his travels

-He was born hard of hearing and his hearing got worse as he got older, until he became fully deaf in his late teens (or the lion equivalent), King Stepdad helped coach him with speaking, and Dusty learned to read lips, if you’re speaking too fast, he won’t be able to understand you

How he’d get along with the Canons:

-Dusty’s chill so I think he’d get along with the 3 protags of I Hope So, he’d probably swap travelling stories over a stripe-coat leg

-He’d be very kind and sympathetic if he heard about Hope and Adamant’s family situation (Dusty cannot stand bad parents, he’d throw hands with one if lions had hands)

-So he’d just think the protags are Just Neat

-Fern has 0 idea who her parents are, but she was raised by her aunt, a pretty cool leopard. Fern didn’t get along with her cousins, who teased her being half-lion.

-Even though her cousins were really mean to her, Ferns doesn’t wanna be mean like them so she tries to be nice because she doesn’t want to make anyone feel sad like her cousins made her feel sad

How she’d get along with the Canons:

-Ferns is just so nice to everyone she’d be super friendly to the 3 protags

-She’d think Adamant is very cool and would admire her a lot

-She also admires Hopeful and would be like “I wanna be as cool as you when I grow up!”

-And she’d think Storm is very pretty and now wants a mane, probably would try to make one out of leaves

-I imagine that Fern bumped into Dusty during her adventure and he was like “must adopt child” bc he was not letting this poor child be on her own, for Traveller’s sake!

-Dusty is such a dad he’ll adopt lost cubs or cubs that had terrible pasts, and that includes Fern, he teaches her about lion stuff, which Fern finds weird, she thinks the concept of prides are weird bc staying in one place your entire life? That’d be boring!

-Dusty told her not to say that if visiting a pride.

-Fern would think Dusty is really cool, she tries to speak slower so he can understand her, as she’s usually a fast talker

-Sometimes Dusty will call Fern “Small Spots” because she doesn’t have as many spots as a leopard, and because she’s smol

-Fern calls him “Sir Fluffy” back because she thinks he has a soft mane, he internally dies of laughter everytime

-Dusty thinks that Fern’s parents abandoned her, since Fern told him that her aunt never talked about her parents, but he doesn’t share that theory with Fern because he doesn’t want to make her upset, but he does try to tell her that she doesn’t need her parents in her life to have a fufilling one.

-Secretly, Fern considers Dusty her uncle, but she doesn’t want to say it out loud because she’s scared he’ll get mad at her. (He won’t, and he just gives her a big ol’ hug when she one day tells him that)

I love myself some modern AU's, and I love how different they all are, so, I made this so we can all share, and feel free to add characters if you want, and just not do any of these if the character isn't important to you!

General:

Bending? Yes! Always!

Monarchy? Nope

Our world or theirs? Their's all the way

Animals? Boring ones from our world, it's what I know the best lol

Aang:

Tattoos? yes, always, and I keep the inspired by the ones in the movie (the movie is awful but the tattoos are cool and actual rl inspired?

Home life/family/upbringing? I usually go with him being raised by Monk Gyatso, and keep everything else kind of vague

Major/job? I go back and fourth, but I like him as a tattoo artist, or as a vet, anything with animals, or as a nurse, preferably a pediatric nurse!

Hobbies? Skating, in any form, yoga, meditation, painting and art

Vegetarian or Vegan? I think he's be cruelty free as far as it's possible

Appa and Momo? Big, fluffy rescue dog and small, shifty cat

personality compared to canon? Pretty similar, maybe a tad less traumatized considering the war didn't happen, but he's still the Avatar, and he still suffered great loss very young

how long have they've known the Gaang? Toph since always, water sibs since middle- or high-school, Zuko either middle school or uni, spending on the story, Suki in high school when she dates Sokka

personality compared to canon? Extremely similar, kind, brave, not afraid to speak her mind, awkward in certain situations, a pesky but loving younger sister, etc.

how long have they've known the Gaang? meets Aang and Toph early high school, Suki pretty fast after, Zuko late high school or uni

Hobbies? Sporty, likes to play all sports but doesn't do any seriously, swimming, surfing, writing, reading

Sokka:

Home life/family/upbringing? Their mother died when they were really young, and Hakoda married his lifelong best friend, Bato. They're generally a happy family.

Major/job? I always like him as some type of engineer, but anything clever and creative is cool!

personality compared to canon? Similar, but maybe a little less... insecure? in that he never had to protect for his entire Tribe very young, and he did very well in school and had lots of talent, but also he has enough struggles to not be a dick? Extremely competitive and protective tho.

how long have they've known the Gaang? meets Aang and Toph early high school, starts dating Suki soon after, Zuko late high school or uni

Hobbies? Surfing in summer, skating, always, drawing and painting, gaming

some random headcanon(s)? has ADHD, is a bi-king, very comfortable with that, and is somehow good friends with all of his exes

Zuko:

Home life/family/upbringing? Similar to canon, just a modern rich asshole version of Ozai, who's either a huge criminal or just inherited a lot of money, Ursa out of the picture, Iroh as caretaker from a young age, but still lived kinda sheltered and was very lonely in his kid and teen years

Major/job? I like tons of stuff for him, either him managing a Jasmin Dragon, preferably with him adding a book café, but also a writer, photographer or tattoo artist

personality compared to canon? very similar, but since I usually write them uni aged or older, he's more mature? But he does still have some anger management issues, can be oblivious to social settings, awkward, brash and has very little knowledge of some basic stuff due to growing up rich. But he's also very loyal, loves his friends so much, and wants everyone to be okay, all the time.

how long have they've known the Gaang? Aang either middle school or late high school, Toph from a young age, and the others either late high school or uni.

Hobbies? Writing, photography, reading, fan fiction, musical nerd, bad gamer

Scar story? Ozai, in some way, preferably when Zuko speaks against something evil he did in front of the wrong people, so similar to canon

some random headcanon? used to have a pretty bad stutter, and even tho it's almost not noticeable anymore, he's very insecure about it

Toph:

Home life/family/upbringing? Extremely sheltered, barley got to go to public school, snuck out a lot, moves out the second she can and has a tense relationship with her parents

Major/job? I never know tbh, so many possibilities, but I like her as some sort of teacher, either in earth bending, or martial art!

personality compared to canon? Pretty much similar as canon? Loud, unapologetically herself, fiercely protective over her friends, funny af

how long have they've known the Gaang? Toph and Aang since childhood, water sibs since early high school

Hobbies? passionate about good music, is a talented drummer, knows piano from childhood, is a fairly popular youtube gamer/streamer

some random headcanon? demiromantic bisexual, she teaches Zuko how to play the piano and he loves it sm it's their thing

Suki:

Home life/family/upbringing? Was raised by a single mom and has a bunch of siblings, not poor, but lower middle class, but comes from a loving home

Major/job? Professional athlete of some type, then a coach when retired

personality compared to canon? The same as for what we know! Good attitude, including, funny, very passionate.

how long have they've known the Gaang? most of them from high school when she starts dating Sokka!

Hobbies? Surfing, gaming, material arts, music, plays the bass

some random headcanon? flannel bi, has lots of freckles and big, green eyes

Mai:

Home life/family/upbringing? Similar to canon, but her mom divorced her father around the start of high school, and they had it a lot better then. She loves her little brother a lot, he's pretty similar to her and looks up to her a lot.

Major/job? Forensic Science major, usually

personality compared to canon? Similar, very similar. Quiet and calculating, but loves her friends and family dearly. Witty, in a quiet way.

Hobbies? plays the violin, reads a lot, goes to a lot of concerts

some random headcanon? I think of her as a lesbian, but I like aro ace Mai, too

Azula:

Home life/family/upbringing? Same as Zuko, but she moves in with Iroh a little later than him. No contact with her father after that tho, goes on the fitness stand against him after the Zuko thing. Very protective of Zuko, and she doesn't hide it, but she can be ruthless with him, too.

Major/job? Leadership, of some kind

personality compared to canon? She's definitely still Azula, she's amazing at reading people, can be cunning, and mean, but not cruel. Had a major psychological breakdown a few years after their father got sent to jail, a reaction to pushing everything away for. so long, and spent some time in a psychiatric hospital, and dealt with a lot with the therapists and doctors there. A very loyal friend.

Hobbies? material arts, advanced fire bending, fashion and reading

some random headcanon? was the leader of the debate club in high school, became a straight up legend in that crowd.

Ty Lee:

Home life/family/upbringing? Basically the same as canon

Major/job? professional gymnast

personality compared to canon? Same as canon

Hobbies? Dancing, cosplay, fashion

some random headcanon? Knows everyone's name, always.

Just in time for Dot Friday!

Just a cute, sending Dot to college, feels ficlet!

Dot finally got the zipper on her overstuffed suitcase sealed and whooshed out a sigh.

"How's it going, sister sib?" Yakko asked from the doorway. He stood arms crossed loosely leaning against the frame.

"Were you really just standing there watching me struggle?"

"Eeeeeh...no?" Clearly caught he had to laugh, "Consider it payback for moving away."

Dot flashed him a harsh look, "So you're obviously going to help me carry it out to make up for your pettiness."

Yakko rolled his eyes smiling, "Yeah I guess." He moved further into her room now practically bare. Most of what was staying, apparently, were a large poster and the major furniture. But photos, knickknacks, things that made the space distinctly Dot had been packed away ready to once more make their way across the country.

He eyed the suitcase sitting between the siblings.

"I could in fact help you cart this away, leaving me here," He threw his arm across his head dramatically, "All alone-not a sib in sight, quiet days," Yakko leaned onto the bed and started sinking down, "space to myself in the evenings, no one hogging the TV with video games or the landline with gossip. Actually," Yakko abruptly sat up," I was making a point...What was my point again?"

"You need a point to talk now?"

"Nah but I'm sure I was trying to make one."

Dot shook her head, "Your point is that you miss me already!"

Yakko snapped his fingers in feigned realization and jumped to his feet, "That's it!" His hands found Dot's shoulders. He went to say something when a flash of concern crossing his brow, "And you're absolutely sure-"

"Yes! Yakko! I'm sure! I want this, I want to go to college and I want to go back to California."

"Alright, alright, I got it this time, I swear." He put up his hands in defense

"And since I don't want you to feel completely alone like the sad old man you are-"

"-Hey I resemble that-"

"-I'll be back on breaks and I'll call. I promise."

"I know you will. Won't stop me from missing you."

"As it shouldn't, I'm incredible!"

"Yes you are."

Oh God.

He was looking at her with 'Dad eyes'. The moniker had been coined at Wakko's graduation from JTAP when the two younger sibs actually had several examples of proud dads to compare him to, ruining Yakko's argument that it wasn't the same thing.

Wakko had been the first of any of them to receive a real diploma, on top of that, his band had just been awarded a chance to record and sell a real single. Yakko was overcome with pride and joy. And as a result was misty eyed for most of the day.

As much as he tried to play cool, if his sibs were doing something amazing he was usually a goner.

The 'Dad eyes' look itself was something caught between sadness, nostalgia and pride. It was overwhelming to receive. Especially right now. Part of her didn't want him so proud, not while she was so terrified.

This was a big, exciting, intimidating new move for her. She watched both of her brothers make big bold choices like this and now that it was finally her turn, and she was almost petrified!

Truth was, Dot had never known normal life without either of her brothers and now she was going to be completely on her own.

She didn't remember their parents and whenever she tried to picture them, Yakko's was the only face that came to mind. And she wouldn't see him for at least 4 months.

At least that was on purpose this time.

Dot's breath hitched in her throat as words poured out rapid fire. She launched herself into a hug.

"I haven't even done anything! I wanna tell you not to worry but I don't know if you shouldn't cause I don't know anything about what to expect. I know I'll probably make mistakes and I just don't want you to be disappointed so please just don't be proud of me yet!"

"Dorothy Warner, what are you talking about?!" Yakko pulled her back by her shoulders to look her dead in the eye incredulous, "Not be proud of you?!"

He looked up, her vanity mirror was still just behind her, "Here," he turned her to it.

"Look.”

She looked bleary-eyed into the mirror at the two of them. “Look at you, Dot. Look at this incredible, vivacious, intelligent young woman I get to call my sister."

Dot sniffled not realizing how much she'd teared up until now. Yakko's voice was nasally, he was tearing up too.

But he kept his tone soft and steady hand on her shoulder, "You will probably make mistakes, it's true. But I am never more than a phone call away and no matter what I will always be proud to call you my sister."

"And you'll try not to worry?"

"I promise to try but beyond that eeehhh," he let out a watery laugh and sniffled, "Don't hold your breath." With a finger under her chin he lifted her gaze, "You've got a whole world to explore, Dot, I just wish I could be there with you."

"We would make a great road trip comedy," she said trying to leverage the big wet emotions in her throat.

"Like an Extremely Warners Movie?"

"Yikes."

"I'm sure I can find an afro."

"Oh please, no!" Dot laughed composing herself, "No I...I want to do this one myself. Just me."

"Alright-" they were interrupted by a knock on the front door which subsequently opened. Babs' voice calling out,

"Hey college kid, you ready?"

"Well all aboard," Yakko checked his watch, "5 minutes early as per usual. Come on, kiddo, let's get this stuff outta here, huh?"

Dot nodded and grabbed the smaller of the bags while Yakko took the larger. By the time he rounded the corner Dot was greeting Babs with a quick hug.

The Warner sister headed past the door.

"We could use just one more set of hands," Yakko said, planting a quick kiss on her cheek.

"Darn and me without any excuses."

With Babs' help everything was set in about oneish trips down the apartment elevator. The -ish being Dot doing one last sweep of her room to make sure she had everything.

She tried to shake the obvious thoughts protruding about how perfect this all seemed for exactly 3 people. More tears stung her eyes. Hot, angry tears.

Stupid Wakko. Stupid band. Stupid tour! She teetered around mentally, cursing out her second oldest brother.

Dot took a deep breath as she left her room and paused outside Wakko's door.

No. Not stupid Wakko, though he certainly seemed to try to earn that title. Today was exciting. Plus, she'd see Wakko again on the break. He was set to be home for Christmas this year. They'd actually get to spend it together.

The Warners three finally back in the same place at the same time. She couldn't wait. But first. Dot exited her brother's room with his favorite blue hoodie in hand.

Dot pulled the apartment door shut tight and locked it, pocketing her keys. Her hand lingered on the door, so sue her she was a bit theatrical after all.

She took a deep breath, took her hand back and made her way back down to Babs' car.

"Yakkoooooo!"

He knew he should let go but he couldn't seem to get his arms to respond.

"Okay, okay." The fur under his eyes was noticeably damp and slightly matted. "You sure you have everything you need-"

"Yes, Yakko, I have everything except a brother who can remember to breathe!"

Dot shouldered her carry on and turned to Babs who offered what reassurance she could, "Don't worry, I've got him."

"Thanks, Babs." The older girl offered a quick hug, lingering her arm over Dot's shoulders.

"But if I have to handle his panicked mess because you forgot to call, I'll get you," she winked and intercepted Yakko's hand before he could trap his sister in another bone crushing hug.

Dot stepped onto the foot of the escalator. Here we go.

She turned to wave, "Bye!"

Yakko was still waving as Dot disappeared over the escalator to catch her flight. Sending her off was somehow even more difficult than it was with Wakko.

Babs looped her arm in his as if stopping any instinct he might have to go after her. "Come on," she pulled him lightly and he followed reluctantly.

They climbed into her car and set off. The ride was mostly silent. Yakko's eyes had set solidly outside the window.

Part of him was glad they weren't in LA. It was harder to picture his sibs as small as he wanted them to be when the city that surrounded him only knew them as teenagers. Still, every five minutes or so he felt his stomach clench and his heart rate picked up.

It had been years since either of them actually fit in one of his arms, despite his having grown significantly too.

His baby sibs weren't babies anymore. Well, they hadn't been for a very long time. But for some reason everytime he remembered that it hit like the first.

Wakko had been going nonstop around the world, a literal rockstar that never failed to impress and inspire him.

Dot decided to go to college with a focus in production and film business. There was no doubt in his mind she could revolutionize the industry should she choose.

Both of them had exceeded everything he ever thought would be remotely possible for them.

And Yakko himself? He was sure to find his own new adventure soon.

They rolled to a stop at a light and Babs took his hand with a squeeze, "You good?"

Her blue eyes shone in the early morning light.

Then again, maybe he already had. He squeezed her hand back, a small smile tugging at the corner of his mouth and he nodded.

"Yeah. Yeah I'm good."

Luna: 31, they/them (still cool with feminine terms like sister tho) (nonbinary pansexual)

Ivy: 34, she/her (lesbian)

Emma: 36, he/she/they (gender is a performance and labels don’t matter, as in like… sister vs brother, son vs daughter, etc, he doesn’t care) (bisexual genderfluid)

River: 37, she/her (transgender lesbian) (likes being called sister but doesn’t care about gendered terms much tbh)

some feelings abt touya and bnha 302 in general! (long post)

jesus this whooooole chapter makes me so so so sad for touya, like he's canonically a crier and i just have all these images now of him crying off to the side while enji looks at his other kids and gives them the time of day. knowing that he was/is a frustrated crier makes the fact that dabi cant cry cuz of his burned tear ducts that much sadder ohhman

one of the things i cant get over is how touya was SO shunned by his dad that when he went to go tell enji about his fire turning from red to blue, he says "i might be as awesome as shouto sooner or later!" like?? this boy is 13 and shouto is 5 yet he's talking like the brother that's eight years younger than him is better than him and thar it's just a fact. the sky is blue, enji wants to beat all might one day, and shouto is better than the rest of his siblings. nevermind that he's only five and just wants to play with his siblings (and dont even mention to me how shouto says he wants to play with "touya and them" cuz im gonna fucking cry abt it. like even though touya's accepted he's bottom of the ladder in this family, shouto clearly wants some sort of acknowledgement from his older siblings and especially his older brother. IM FVCKN SOBBN). enji has made it clear in this family that shouto was what he was looking for and everyone else is not as important, and i knew this from shouto's pov but it's kinda wild to see it implied so casually in touya's words.

"you'll be glad you created me! i just know it!" HOLY SHIT. god my heart. oh my fuck. literally all enji had to do was show up to the fucking mountain, and he couldnt even do that? what the hell?? your son asks you to go to the mountain, you tell your wife not to let him go traim but she said she couldnt stop him, and instead of going yourself to make sure he's okay and BECAUSE HE ASKED YOU TO COME (and with an actually valid reason, no less! fire changing colour is kind of a big fucking deal!!!) you just?? let him go and let him stay there??? my god the amount of times touya must have burned himself and the trees with tears in his eyes. ahhhHHH!!!

what kills me (and touya too soon?) was that we thought before the back story started that enji forced touya to train till he burned up. then when 290 came out--and definitely after 301--we thought maybe touya overtrained himself and burned up. and sure, he was definitely overtraining, but to find out that the burns that "killed" him started just bc he was crying so much he lost control and didnt know how to ease up on his flames? he was upset and literally trying to get himself to stop crying, and then he just set himself aflame and burned up cuz of all his emotions??? that HURTS. holy fuck.

i cant believe natsuo's feeling lowkey guilty for not socking enji in the face like he wasnt EIGHT???? and let's be real, enji woukdnt have fucking listened to natsuo telling him to talk to touya--he already wasnt listening when touya would straight up say "look at me" and when even rei said touya just wanted enji to look at him and notice him. listen, i know sometimes miscommunications happen in families and children are embarrassed to admit they want attention and so their parents remain unaware that theyre not giving their kid something they want, but touya was as clear as can be on MANY occasions, and even rei agreed touya needed the attention and enji just wasnt listening.

also i know there was discourse abt touya being sexist by telling natsu that "the women in this house are good for nothing" and mb it was partly diff translations cuz i feel like saying "this house" makes it specific to rei and yumi instead of all women everywhere, but even disregarding that--i think it's a valid thought for him to have when rei wasnt standing up for him (where he could see, at least) and yumi admitted herself that she was too scared to interfere and so just tried to fix things and keep appearances. i feel like based on what touya's seen from them, it makes sense that he has that opinion. (also gonna mention that i think rei's and yumi's choices also make sense and i think they were valid, seeing as how they were afraid as well.)

and poor natsu being woken up in the middle of the night (what was implied to be often enough, esp cuz it seemed they share a room and their futons are close) bc of touya's pain. that's a lot of emotional responsibility for an eight year old, and it is also so sad that at 13, touya didnt have anyone else to turn to but his kid brother. at 13, i remember being fully aware of the distinction in maturity between an 8 year old and myself, and it sucks that touya couldnt go to anyone but a younger child with all his pain. i bet yumi being too scared to interfere translated to touya as "she wouldnt help me" and thats another reason he didnt go to the 2nd oldest when he needed to vent. (also not related to this but how the FUCK was natsuo so tall at 8 years old? wh a t)

this chapter. this fucking chapter. my heart aches for touya, and it's just such a huge fucking shame he didnt get the attention and validation and support he needed. there must have been workarounds so that touya could safely use his quirk. there weere DEFINITELY better ways to support your son through a self-destructive quirk, ways that involved actually being there and seeing him. i feel like if someone showed him the attention he needed and talked him through how to better control his emotions (and by extension, his flames) and a positive and healthy way, he could have been someone so great. and if he ever learned how to set aside the way he felt infefior to shouto and saw that shouto just wanted to play with his cool older siblings, it might have been really beneficial to see that there was someone there who thinks he's cool and gave him attention just bc he was an older brother, who needed him when everyone else in the househild didnt seem to need him.

and lastly, the fact that the chapter ends with rei saying that shouto is the family hero and that shouto will have to face dabi?? and it makes me angry that shouto has to take on that responsibility. that he was five and suffering for things he wasnt even a part of, couldnt be properly aware of, bc he was so young. he just saw that he was separated from his siblings and that his dad bullied his mom, then grew up shouldering enji's heavy goals and high expectations and abusive training alongside the barely-there memories of his older brother who died (i say barely there bc if natsu didnt even know shouto liked cold soba, shouto was definitely not around enough to have solid memories of touya before he "died"), and now he has to do the emotional labour of fighting his villain brother (who i bet shouto lowkey empathizes with when he thinks abt it late at night) as well as suffer the physical consequences of that agni kai. and it makes me angry that he has to do that, bc he's a Good Guy and he probably feels he has some sort of filial and familial responsibility. he's only 16. he just wanted to play with touya and them, and now he has to deal with this horse shit dabi's causing cuz his dad's an emotionally neglecting asshat who couldnt see past his dumb fucking ego until he saw shouto play with a bunch of kids during shou's remedial exam a decade after his eldest son burned himself to death. what the fuckety fuck.

lastly, since we saw touya burn uo the way he did... did he really just like... burn so much his jaw fell off, and that's how they found the jawbone? cuz holy hot (BURNING too soon???) damn that must have been painful as all hell. i wonder if next chapter we get to see if someone found touya at the park and helped him out and sorted out the jaw bone thing, or if we finally get to see if deku wakes up lol.

anyways this chapter hurt my heart big time, and i kinda wanna draw kid touya crying while being overlooked by his family to let out some of those feelings but we'll see.

and i still stand by my idealistic and naively optimistic hope that dabi gets redeemed and they soend some actually time together as a family (without enji. or at least, with an enji that has apologized to touya in seiza. like, forehead-to-floor apologize.)

does this hope sort out how dabi redeems himself, seeing as how he's murdered people in cold blood and shouldnt be excused for that bc those actions are also inarguably terrible? no. not sure how he could redeem himself for that kinda stuff honestly, but it doesnt mean i dont still somehow want the todoroki sibs to get along, cuz im weak for mending families.

also id like to send a huge kudos out into the world to rei todoroki for being firm for once and for also not running away from her mistakes like her asshole husband has been. i really admire and respect that. she was afraid and being abused, but now that she's been away from enji and has had time to heal, now that her and shouto are in the mend and she's seen that her eldest son is alive and a villain, she's a place where she can acknowledge that even though she was a victim too, she played a part in touya's emotional neglect and she's taking responsibility and that speaks to some incredible fucking strength. damn.

i hope one day that dabi realizes the same in regards to his mother and natsuo, who shouldered a lot of his emotional pain and suffered the consequences of his outbursts (even though his emotions are valid and his outbursts understandable, he still hurt rei and put a lot of pressure on natsu), and i also hope he sees that for all that he hates his father, his whole existence revolves around enji and it's a shitty place to be (and then he'll have ANGST abt it and that shit will be!! so good!!!)

yeah i think those were all my feelings. i had so many lol. their family situation is so difficult, i hope they all turn out okay and alive and healing.

oh i guess i also wanted to say that i kept calling enji an asshat and asshole cuz he was for sure, but i still think his redemption is valid and im glad he's taking those steps to be a better person by being a better father. i dont know if id want his family to forgive him for all that horrible shit he put them through (im personally hoping that no matter what anyone else does, natsuo will choose to to cooperate in the healing of his family as a unit but will never forgive enji) but i think it's good of people to try to be better than they were yesterday regardless of whether or not they get forgiveness. i dont personally like enji, but i dont hate that he's getting a redemption. i just hope it's a redemption that makes sense and forces him to put in the work, and isnt something like a death sacrifice for shouto or dabi. i want him to be alive and i want his redemption process to hurt like a fucking bitch while he forces himself to make better choices and be a better person, cuz redemption isnt supposed to be easy in the slightest. i GUESS all the crying he did in 302 was a good start.

ATDAO crew! under cut ‘cause I got rambly again

I have been in a rambling mood for so long and this opened the floodgates apparently

Tris has.... a pretty terrible relationship with his parents, but hasn't quite come to grips with the fact that it's As Terrible As It Is just yet 'cause of many reasons. but yeah. as a general rule, his 'rents are more concerned with creating a picture perfect family that's doing better than everyone else more than they're concerned with any of their kids' actual wellbeing. there's loads of academic and social pressure, the environment is hostile and nit-picky and controlling, love is completely conditional, etc etc etc. it was a pretty horrible and stifling place to grow up, particularly for someone with chronic anxiety and psychosis

all three of the Greer sibs end completely cutting ties with their parents down the track which is extremely good and valid of them

I think he did have various other parental figures growing up though! when he was really little there was his neighbour Mrs Harris who was about the only warm and kind adult figure in his life aside from his older brother, and then later there were were several teachers throughout his school career he viewed as kinda parental figures or role models c:

Noa has a good relationship with her mum! they're super close! they're both very similar people, both with very loud, over-the-top personalities, so they clash a lot, and from an outside perspective you might think they hate each other?? because they're always yelling and arguing?? but they're just Caring Loudly. Noa’s favourite person in the universe is her mum, Noa thinks she’s the coolest person she knows (and she’s right tbh)

she's not in contact with her dad at all 'cause he's a piece of garbage and her mum ditched him and moved far far far away when Noa was really tiny. in the process, her mum lost contact with a lot of her support system either due to distance or disapproval, so Noa didn’t really grow up around a lot of relatives or adult figures (there are still some she and her mum are in contact with! they just don’t see each other in person very often). n Noa is uhhh naturally distrusting and standoffish with most people, so she’s fairly unwilling to get close enough to anyone that MIGHT end up being a non-blood-related parental figure

like, she's been let down by a lot of adults, she wants nothing to do with 'em quite frankly

I wanna say there's a few 'mum friend' type older friends she knows from her time in group therapy, but I'd think she view them more as older sisters than anything

Shara is the easiest answer because she just has a good relationship with her parents all round?? like. just genuinely not much to report here. she didn’t really have many friends growing up due to social anxiety and being a Weird Little Girl so I think for most of her childhood she’s just considered her parents her best friends, despite their efforts to, like.... nudge her in the direction of potential friends her own age. I think she probably grew up a little over-protected but that’s not really a bad thing, it’s a scary world out there y’know

her family is full of chaotic oddballs with odd passions n Shara is no exception. I think they often have trouble keeping up with each other, but try to be interested in each other's passions anyway even if they don't really understand what's going on. so ye, her parents try real hard to keep up with their daughter and ask the right questions and help her out with her weird little projects but don't always hit the mark

which is fine!

I would describe their love for each other in general as clumsy and awkward but extremely earnest

her parents travel a lot due to their work and sometimes their work drags them in different places, and Shara often travels with her dad and as such she’s a little closer to him than she is to her mum, but they’re all still pretty tight-knit

I’m still figuring out the details in Shara’s familial relationships n while I’m pretty sure she had some non-related parental figures I have not yet figured out what they are and brain too fried to come up with something now hahahaha

Kai is an interesting one 'cause Kai definitely HAD a good relationship with their parents. they come from a very open and warm and caring albeit completely chaotic household, n they and their siblings all grew up immensely loved and told just to try hard and have fun and be their best selves. Kai's openness and willingness to treat everyone as a friend comes from their parents, as does much of their empathy and way of understanding the world c:

I think they had plenty of non-related parental figures growing up, but they have a lot of trouble remembering which of their parental figures they’re related to and which they aren’t lmao. I think they were the type of family where there were like fifty family friends that are referred to as aunts and uncles and cousins even though there’s zero blood relation :P

but yes anyway the thing with Kai issss they did get trapped in a time loop for seven years and got declared legally dead, so their family has been struggling to cope with the grief of their loss for......... a long time. and a lot of Kai's story revolves around their struggles with how to come back into their family's lives after so long, whether it's selfish to shake things up again after their family spent so long trying to move on, whether they still have a place there, and the idea of like..... so much can change in seven years where no time at all has passed for Kai

it was a pretty devastating blow to the rest of the Lancasters when Kai supposedly died, they were all pretty ruined and their mum had a stress-induced psychotic break. things are still pretty rough and Kai coming back into their lives is................. a readjustment for everyone, and there's a level of distance between Kai and their parents as they figure out how to fit back together again

it's not a BAD relationship, it's definitely still a deeply loving one, but it IS strained and messy and confused
