love exploring the difference in work-life balance between roy and jade. tbh, roy doesn’t really have a balance. his identity is public which ultimately makes him more accessible than his peers who prefer to keep their names secret, for a while he was living in titans tower which further blurred the lines between work and personal life, and all of his equipment (suits, weapons, etc.) is very easily accessible. then there’s jade, whose identity is such a secret that whether or not her real name is "jade" is called into question, her laboratory is separately located from her home instead of an extension of it, & there is a very clear line of separation between cheshire and jade.

Kibbe Observations

Theatrical Romantics often have distinct husky voices. Morgan Fairchild, Jane Seymour, Salma Hayek, Mila Kunis (if you watch Black Swan you can listen to her speak at a lower pitch, people who have husky voices sound shrill when they speak at a higher pitch which is how Mila usually speaks)

I feel like every Kibbe type has a few celebs who intuitively always dress for their type and a bunch of others who absolutely never do lol.

Sofia Vergara, Kelly Brook, Ava Gardner, Christina Hendricks etc are Soft Dramatics who almost always wear their lines.

Salma Hayek, Joan Collins are TRs who pretty much embody TR glam most of the time.

3. Kibbe is based on vibes someone gives off, more than you would think. There are certain criteria that has to be met for each type but there are exceptions, always!!

Audrey Hepburn was 5'7 but she's a true Gamine. It's rare to see a tall Gamine but it's not impossible

Beyonce is also 5'7 but she's a Romantic even though most Romantics are short.

4. Kibbe is about image identity. That means the image you project. You can analyse the length & breadth of someone's shoulders & calves all you like but your image identity is MORE than that. I'll use an example. Mila Kunis & Sarah Hyland, pretty much look like sisters yet the vibes they give off are different.

Mila Kunis has a very sultry, sensuous "femme fatale" essence (she's verified TR) but Sarah Hyland has a more innocent but kind of mischievous, more youthful vibe. You can easily see that Mila has a more "dark feminine" energy whereas although Sarah has similar coloring and features, she still feels more light feminine.

Here she is in a very TR-esque outfit but something feels off

This outfit would look really weird on a lot of people (a tutu skirt for God's sake 😭) but she looks good in it

in this dress however, she looks like a kid who wore a grown up dress. her youthful vibe contrasts the heavy romantic vibes of this dress

However, here she looks like a complete doll. again, this look seems to suit her in a way it wouldn't suit most people.

This dress is a little too intense for her.

However she looks great here!!

I would say she's Soft Gamine

She has Gamine essence and it's the kind of styling that looks best on her

Let's compare her to Mila Kunis now

Mila, kinda looks like she's wearing a costume here. It looks very off.

Here she's in a very Romantic outfit with a dash of glamour and she looks greattt

Tea length dresses only look good on Gamines imo and here Mila looks very out of place

despite being very short, tea length dresses, even in a more Dramatic style, does not seem to suit Mila

Here she is, in a very TR look and it really harmonizes all her features and attributes.

this dress would be more flattering on a Natural type but Mila does not look like herself here

aside from the fact that this dress needed some ironing, this is probably the most TR look Mila has ever worn and it really makes her shine

5. In order to be SD, you need to have a T shaped silhouette. Broad shoulders, small waist and proportionately small hips. SDs are not "tall TRs".

6. Sofia Vergara & Joe Manganiello are my SD power couple

its sooo easy to tell that they both have similar essences and project a similar image

however, here she is with her former fiancee Nick Loeb. Sofia's overpowering Dramatic essence makes her stand out and she almost looks out of place next to Nick, who is FN. Their essences clash with each other and make them kind of awkward looking together.

There is a meme about how Brad Pitt imitates the women he's with. Let's see how he channels his different essences with different women.

Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt are both Naturals (FN & SN) with Dramatic/Romantic essence

Together they project a very larger than life, powerful, strong and intense vibe

Here he is, with Jennifer Aniston. as a couple, they project a more grounded, couple-next door, warm vibe. they're like the cool couple on a college campus, two hot people who look good together but in a very earthy, grounded way. Jennifer Aniston is also a Natural (SN)

Brad has Dramatic essence however Jen is pure Natural. so while Brad can pull off a more intense styling, Jen would look kinda out of place in it.

The dress and leather in general is too overpowering on her

However, she really shines in outfits like these that let her true essence be reflected. everybody, especially in the last couple of years, has been imitating Rachel Green (and 90s style in general) but imo, its most flattering on Naturals because of the way clothes were designed in that decade.

Here he is with Gwyneth Paltrow. Gwyneth is yet another Natural (FN) but she has Classic essence. The thing about possessing Classic essence is that you have a perfect yin-yang balance, so nothing stands out individually since everything blends together perfectly. Brad & Gwyneth together sort of bleed into each other, their essences don't contrast each other in anyway, they almost look like siblings😭😭😭 , there is no visible polarity at play.

Brad was with 3 different Natural women yet they all projected a very distinct vibe because of their very different essences.

7. kibbe is about image and how other perceive you. its futile to obsess over width and breadth and circumference and what not. dont miss the forest for the trees. also, there is a lot of variety within each type, not all Soft Classics look the same and not every Gamine is going to look great in tea length dresses. every individual is unique.

Amy Adams is FN but she's only 5'2. imo, she has a blend of Natural+Classic essence.

IMO, she was horribly miscast in Enchantment. She does not possess the wide-eyed, gullible "ingenue" essence necessary to play a lost princess. i just wasn't convinced that she's this naive, innocent princess because Amy exhibits a more world-wise, mature and "no-nonsense" vibe.

be it in American Hustle, Arrival or Sharp Objects, she plays characters that seem to fit her like a glove. She's just very convincing in these type of roles because she seems like a grown up who knows what to do and how to get things done. She does not have the air of a ditzy, confused damsel in distress

here's Isla Fisher. i specifically chose Isla because her & Amy kind of look alike but their essences are vastly different from each other.

Isla is a verified Romantic and has Romantic + Ingenue essence and she's perfect in films like Confessions of a Shopaholic because she's convincing as a ditzy airhead who is slightly naive and very confused. (this being one manifestation of the ingenue essence) if you look at her career, she's by and large done a lot of romcoms. It's hard to imagine her in a show like Sharp Objects or a movie like Arrival because the image she projects is far more youthful and sweet.

8. there is a reason why kibbe has its roots in old hollywood. old hollywood studio system manufactured stars the way kpop companies manufacture idols today. the were assigned an image to project and each star managed by the company had their own unique appeal that set them apart from the rest. lauren bacall projects an aura thats entirely different from audrey hepburn or marilyn monroe. liz taylor is completely different from gene tierney. most big stars in those days possessed Dramatic essence, simply because Dramatic essence makes people stand out easily. its a very large, strong, intense essence and gives the individual an edge. but the market created space for all kind of stars, there were actors who had a more boy/girl next door aura, femme/homme fatale aura, a quirky,funny aura and more. these days, cinema in general lacks big stars. imo there hasn't been a truly big star in maybe the last 20 years or so of cinema because no one's projecting an image that appropriately fits them.

however, pop music has had many icons and a huge part of their success is their image. be it taylor swift or nicki minaj or even BTS. people connect to them because they have a stable image identity for others to connect to. they have lore, they switch things up and keep things interesting but there's a bedrock that is unchanging and thats what makes them "stars".

I shall pull out a concept design for an au. I made an oneshot already with it, but the visual concept was kept in between my lil pile of unposted drawings. :'3

Beware, this is a long one :'3

Now I present to you:

✨️The fairy Godmothers✨️

Actually godfathers but meh

The gist of this is that they are dying on the inside and everyone watches them do it in sparkly clothes...

Of you look closely, each of them is inspired by a type of fairy godmother we all know and love, except 3. (2 are inspired by Winx and 1 is inspired by a 'fairy godfather')

Now onto the juicy part, the lore:

We will have a few aspects I will tackle, so we will take them I order.

1. What are Fairy Godmothers?

'Fairy Godmother'(gender neutral) is a title which marks a person as able to wield the magic of wishes in their favor. It doesn't depend on knowledge or naturally born, it's a calling, which makes the Fairy godmothers to be rare. The drawback is that once a Fairy godmother hears a heartfelt wish, they have to fulfill it. They can only work on 1 wish at a time, so it's far more risky to be a vacant Fairy and have to get randomly assigned.

If the wisher gives up on the wish, the Fairy godmother will be weakened and suffering great deals of pain for a certain period of time, depending on the measure of disappointment the wisher felt.

Each Fairy godmother has a special wisher, called 'godchild'. The Fairy godmother can hear their godchild's most heartfelt wish without the need to be spoken. When they are close to their godchild, the Fairy godmother can be summoned if the godchild's wish wasn't yet assigned. Most don't mention it, as this tie is hard to find.

When in fairy form and with a wish assigned, the Fairy godmother embraces a motif, as well as gaining unlimited powers, but just for a temporary basis, until the wish at hand is fulfilled. In dire situations, they can summon the last stand: any spell, which leaves a glass object after it was cast, the object being kept even after the wish was fulfilled.

Fairy Godmothers can retire. At one point, they fulfill enough wishes as to not be tied to them. Most hurry to finish that limit so they can no longer be forced to fulfill a wish they hear. When they do reach that limit, they gain a new form more fitting for all their fortes and personalities.

2. The setting

The setting is normal twst(magic world that venerates the Disney villains). A famous fairytale was that was known among people was the one of the kind Fairy Godmother. A fairy that managed to fulfill the innocent wish of a poor girl, helping her to go to the ball, where she met the prince and eventually fell in love. That became the guideline for all generations of fairy godmothers: fulfill the wishes of people and give them the ending they deserve.

NRC had a tradition of assigning fairy godmothers as dormleaders for 2 motives:

1. The dormleaders will serve their dorm and do their best to fulfill their dormmates's most heartfelt wishes.

2. A fairy godmother is a very powerful being, therefore having such power can aid into protecting their dorm and making it to thrive.

The dormleader changes only when the old one fulfilled their wishes limit or when they go on their 4th year internship.

Our dormleaders ofc are Fairy Godmothers, all gaining the positions either in their first year or in between, after the criteria I mentioned above.

3. Their motifs and special powers

It means the main theme of the Fairy godmother along with what kind of spells are they most known for.

Starting in dorm order:

Riddle: by his looks alone, not a lot of people realize that his motif us actually cats. It's far more obvious when Riddle turns into such feline in order to watch over the one he's in charge of fulfilling their wish. It's still a bit hard to tell that it's him since he can change his species of cat and fur color.

Leona: Snow is his domain. It matches well with his cold approach upon his wisher. It's mainly Leona's doing if there are signs of ice/Snow around. Thankfully this form allows him to resist to low temperatures. He doesn't like it the slightest, hence why he tries to hurry up with the wishes.

Azul: He is an Octomer... So he asks himself why in heavens is his motif butterflies. He is horrible at flying, not to mention that such insects are not suited for water life. But then again, his magical butterflies allow him to spy or aid his wisher from a distance, so he doesn't complain too much.

Kalim: He absolutely loves everything about being a fairy godmother, including his motif: pumpkins. It's wierd, but Kalim always manages to make the most unusual things out of magic pumpkins.

Vil: Scorpions. Look, it may seem a bit scary, but Vil always had his way with his lil helpers. His most known spells are the instant makeovers

Idia: Flowers are his domain. He doesn't really take a lot of wishes, but he is known to mostly have messy spells, leaving flowers, leaves or petals when they are wearing off.

Malleus: He is the most skilled fairy godmother currently in NRC. Despite the expectations, his motif is bunnies. Some might assume it's carrots also because of his wand, but Malleus's signature move is summoning magic bunnies to find something or send messages.

4. Plot

There is not really a main plot for now. Instead of overBlot, each dormhead faces a more difficult wish, which requires them to not only fulfill it, but to also help the wisher become a better person. This also makes them realize their own wrongs.

In here, there's Yuu, so take it in mind since the most important wishes They fulfill are from nrc student. Yuu is getting a few wishes fulfilled as well, but not too many.

Riddle: unintentionally got dragged in the prologue mine incident due to Grim wishing loudly to find the magic stone. Later on (a few months) he is assigned to fulfill Ace's wish regarding a crush on Deuce.

Leona: Jamil is his godchild. Unfortunately Leona has to work a way to free him from servitude before Jamil loses it.

Azul: Man heard Deuce's very secret wish, and now he has to set him up with Ace. Unknowingly he sabotages Riddle who in turn sabotages him back, creating a vicious circle of sabotages. (The make it red, make it blue scene from sleeping beauty, but it's these 2)

Kalim: He took upon Trey's wish of finding a gift for Riddle and Che'nya. Trey wants to make it very special, so Kalim wants to give it all into it.

Vil: Jack wants to go into a cactus competition, but his opponents keep cheating. Vil tries to help him and change his view about competitions.

Idia: Malleus is struggling with getting Sebek's wish to fulfill. Idia discovered that Sebek is his godchild. Shenanigans ensure.

Malleus: Epel wants really bad to not be looked down upon due to his cutsey looks, but because Malleus doesn't interpret it entirely, these 2 end on a wild goose chase in a scavenger hunt event.

My Thoughts on Movie 26 (Black Iron Submarine)

Warning: this post contains spoilers, if you haven't seen the movie or don't want to receive any spoilers, don't continue your reading.

Without further ado, let's start.

I finally got the chance to watch Movie 26 and, two days after, I'm ready to draw my conclusions.

This Movie didn't have a good start at all: in April 2023 Twitter was full of posts inviting to boycott the film. On the other hand, one must recognize the huge revenue achieved, which, up to this date, it's the highest of all Detective Conan movies.

The result makes me genuinely happy since I'm also supporting DC franchise but I also think that this movie could have been much better.

The idea of semi - canon movie brings both advantages and risks. If on one hand there are profits that skyrocket, on the other there are obvious issues with the canon plot. This is the case of Movie 26.

The main problems are:

1) CHARACTERS THAT ARE OOC

• Vermouth

I didn’t like her behaviour in this movie at all. First of all, I find it absurd and senseless that, while at work (and talking about a person that the Organization plans to kill later), she casually looks at the site where it is announced the contest to win the Fusae brooch. I want to stress the fact she is not a frivolous character.

Going back to the pin, to put it simply, Vermouth wants it and Ai gives her the last ticket in order to win it. That’s why Vermouth decides to help Ai in this movie.

Seriously? Are we talking about the same Vermouth who hates the Miyano family and their project with all of her heart and tried to kill Ai twice?

I don’t even want to mention how nonsensical it is that Vermouth bothers to go to the Philippines, disguise herself as Shiho at different stages of her life and prove that the facial recognition program is flawed. I might accept the explaination that probably it was the Boss' order but still was all of this necessairy? I think there must have been an easier way. 

(Side note: enough with the scenes where Vermouth has a towel on. There is an abuse of these scenes ever since the Mystery Train. What is refined in Gosho’s work becomes vulgar in others).

• Gin

He has become the most reckless and irascible character in the entire universe. The coldbloodness and logic that distinguished him have definitely disappeared in the movies. This issue, already traced in the previous movies, here is taken far beyond, since he orders the kidnapping of Ai trusting a program rather than real investigations. Now it is ordinary for him to make everything explode and kill other members of the Organization as if it were nothing: no matter if the characters are non - canon, it is against the logic that the Boss manages to maintain a certain balance between the members. Moreover, he is the only who can decide who must live and who must die.

• Kir

I can’t fathom why Kir decides to help Ai since they've never met.

2) CONSEQUENCES ON THE MAIN PLOT

• In case this movie is considered canon, the suspicions about Kir would increase significantly. 

• For Ran, this would be the third time he comes into contact with the members of the Organization and, especially after seeing Ai kidnapped, now she must have some suspicions.

• It remains unclear why Rum wanted to use the program to track down the Boss. In the canon plot, there is no mention of the members, let alone Rum, the second-in-command, not knowing where the Boss is. What's more, all of the members carry absolute respect for the Boss and it would be a nonsense to use a program to track him down.

I'll leave aside the comments on the laws of physics (totally non-existent in the movies) and on Akai who managed to knock out the Organization TWICE and none of the members does anything about it.

In order to give an overall assessment, I have created a small list with the criteria that I consider important in a movie and my marks:

Plot: 7/10

In general, the movie still managed to be interesting and not to bore me. I didn’t feel like I wasted my time and I didn’t check the time too much while watching it. Pinga and Rum could have been better exploited (I feel like they are kinda wasted here).

Coherence with the Canon Plot: 2/10

The reasons are widely discussed above.

Quality of the Animation: 8/10

There are some frames that aren't the best but the movie truly is of high quality, nothing to say.

OST: 7/10

No OST really pierced my heart but I still found them suitable for the scenes they were connected to. Honorable mention to the OST of Gin in the Porsche and Beautiful Fin.

Characters' Realtionships: 5/10

Aside from CoAi (yes, because this is a film about this ship, it's useless to deny it) there are no other relationships that are deepened. In this movie, the members of the Organization act on their own and Pinga has no contact with Rum. No comment on the TOTALLY senseless kiss between Ai and Ran.

Voice Acting: 10/10

I just love the voice actors, their work is flawless.

Merch/ Events: 9/10

Movie 26 really had the best merch and  sponsoring so far. The icing on the cake was Black Crow Sing, I hope that in the future there will be other similar events.

Overall score: 6,85/10

A nice movie to watch if you have two hours of spare time.

Title: In Praise of Shadows

Author: Jeff Vandermeer

Rating: 2/5 stars

[epistemic status: mostly a review of a short story and a novella. I'm not sure that I can rate both of them, because the story in particular is just kind of OK. Still, that's what I'll do.]

I'm just going to sum up my experiences with this book. Keep in mind that if I had to rate a thing I wouldn't be going in with all these caveats, but then again I don't have a coherent set of criteria for rating such a thing. I'm just taking stuff I liked or hated about it and trying to make an order out of it.

Anyway, the title refers to two different kinds of entities: shadows, and books. I don't really need to explain the distinction between the two, but let me just say that if you know what you're doing, a book will be more than a shadow -- that is, if you're using the book in a more sophisticated way than I did, but if you're not then you should feel free to take the book for what it is.

I loved the writing

This book was just so fun to read. One of the things I appreciated most about it is the sense that Vandermeer wanted to tell a story which was worth telling (even though he was doing so in a way that was almost definitely inadvisable), and he seemed to realize that if he didn't tell this story, someone else would. Thus he could let it have all the strange, off-putting qualities he wanted to explore, because he knew that someone would come along and try to make sense of it anyway.

I mean, Vandermeer is really good at building up a story in your head. Take his novel Annihilation, which was a huge nerdoutrage for people who liked science fiction (to say the least). But that story started out as one of his short stories and then ended up being a novel. Vandermeer has no such compunctions: he is good at building up a scene in your head by piling up little details that you might not have thought about at all. Here's a snippet of one such scene from a story called "The Other Mother":

As it turns out, there were a lot of people who did not know about the Other Mother. It didn't matter that I had a degree in biology. All the people who came into contact with her regarded her with the same bafflement they might show if they had met someone who wore mismatched socks, a bathrobe, and a fur coat into the grocery store, walked over to the fish section, and said, "I want to see something really unusual."

This is just one short scene, but it works so well because, just for an instant, we feel like we're inside a strange, complicated, alien mind. And we do this with all sorts of things in the story. (It's just one of a million things that Vandermeer does really well: his stories are full of little details like this, and it makes them a lot richer).

Now, the story itself is pretty different from Annihilation. The characters are less likeable, less likeable per se, less weird, less "real" -- but they're still recognizable as people, and they seem plausible in a way that the characters in Annihilation never did. This is because the story is so good at making you feel in control of the things in the story -- there's a sense that all these little scenes are coming together to make sense, to give you a story with a shape that you can understand.

A lot of that comes from the way the characters think -- they're not necessarily "right" in any way, but they come across as genuinely strange in the ways that Vandermeer wants you to find them weird. Take the two characters in "Other Mother": they talk like this:

They're in the wrong room.

Marybeth's voice was pitched an octave lower than usual, but the words were as loud and clear as any I'd heard from her since high school.

There's a certain amount of awkwardness in correcting someone's pronunciation. One has to try to ignore the fact that one is making a fool of oneself by trying to be a linguist.

"I'm not in the right room," I said.

They looked at me blankly. The woman's eyes were as dark as her son's, and her brow was a line of heavy shadow. Her face was a study in shadow, and in spite of myself I felt a chill steal over me.

"No," I said. "We're in the right room. Right... room."

There's not a word here that you wouldn't expect from a human being.

The story as a whole has its dark spots. I didn't really care for "The Drowned Girl," for instance, and this was one reason that I didn't really like the book itself, or rather, why I didn't like reading it and found it hard to focus. But the story is always moving forward, and it's moving in this direction despite the bleakness. It's very much in the vein of a lot of Vandermeer's earlier work, so if that stuff gives you pause, the book itself won't: you will just have a sense of unease in the story, which you can overcome by getting past it. (I'll talk more about the book once I'm finished, because I don't feel up to rating it).

One of the oddest (and, I suppose, most effective) things is the way Vandermeer makes you forget that there is a plot. I mean, I suppose there is one, but I've read far too many stories where there isn't really a plot but the characters feel like there is one. The characters talk about how the story is moving, but then it isn't actually moving there. But the plot is there, because it's in the characters. And it's not hard to feel like the characters are in control of it, because they come across as genuinely, plausibly strange. It's like a magic spell, which, in the end, the reader is powerless to resist.

A very small example here, but an example that stands out: one of the main characters is "Katharine" and her "family." Her father is a physicist with some sort of odd reputation. He is very old fashioned in the way that he thinks of the world around him, but he is also an honest person, and he doesn't really talk much about that world. Instead, he talks about something he called the breathplay, which involves getting a bunch of very drunk people to try and kiss each other.

It was a strange experience. The sensation was not sexual. It was

Pandaemonium Musings

Thoughts occured to me while musing on my own after talking with people about Pandaemonium as it stands now.

The first, is I think that Lahabrea absolutely ended up following up on Athena’s research. Doing so after probably becoming whole with his essence once more when the Final Days struck. As if there is one thing that would have pushed him to do that it would have been the final days due to how devastating they were. As then he would have viewed the research in the vein of “Our Star is Dying, can this be used to save our people?”

This is how you eventually got the Ascians in my view, as the goal of Athena’s research was at one point summarised by Themius and Lahabrea as “Transcending Physical Limits.” And where have we heard that line in the past? From the Ascians in ARR and Heavensward when they spoke of the Echo at the time being used to transcend mortal limits, which slightly different word use but the similarity behind both struck me as way more than coincidental. . As Themius and Lahabrea make a point to go on about how they were still limited by the constraints of their own flesh when speaking about the idea of transcending like in this research.

It wasn’t used originally because of the summoning of Zodiark which staved off the final days. But when Hydaelyn Sundered the World into the Shards, Lahabrea may have used the machinations of that research in an attempt to save those that were closest to him at the time, Elidibus and Emet-Selch preventing them from being sundered, since Zodiark was sundered but Elidibus was not.

The other thought that occured to me is that we may not be dealing with Athena’s back up plans, we may still be dealing with her primary plan just having been delayed. Since as people pointed out, she clearly anticipated Lahabrea’s arrival and the actions he’d take, she showed no resistance at all. To the point that, I don’t think she merely anticipated his actions but his actions were part of her plan since she knew she wouldn’t be able to continue without resistance for forever.

Also Erichthonios, what makes him so special? What makes him the perfect one for her experiment? What we see of him as a person, he has nothing unique about him compared to any other ancient as they all have differences from one another.

Save there is ONE thing that makes him unique compared to literally every other Ancient.

He is Athena’s son, born of her. This may be what makes him the perfect experiment in studying not only how souls come to be reborn. But also may have allowed Athena to form some kind of connection to him that allowed her to avoid being reborn as a new being, Or perhaps would have let her follow up with further experimentation, or even somehow let her anchor her soul in a manner to avoid being taken back to the Underworld shortly after death. I’m really spitballing here to an extent, but I really don’t feel like we are dealing with simple contingency plans, I feel we are dealing with a plan that has simply been in motion, it hasn’t had any particular deadline. It only requires certain criteria to be met in order to come to fruition, so what if the wait has been thousands of years for Athena? She doesn’t care about anyone save herself and her own research and transcendance.

I might end up being completely wrong, but just thoughts that occured to me after the fact and like I said after talking with other people in the FC.

Review: Queen High by C. J. Carey

I was lucky enough to read a highly immersive book called Widowland last year and I was really happy to discover that it had a sequel. You should definitely read Widowland before jumping into Queen High, as it will give you a thorough introduction to the world that these books are set in and what Rose has already been through. They’re both very addictive books, so I’m sure you’ll enjoy them!

Since the Leader died two years ago, the Protectorate has become a land of spies. Rose Ransom is still a Class I female working as a ‘corrector’ of literature, making classic novels acceptable for the teachings of the Alliance. Now, she has been asked to turn her hand to poetry, which must be banned completely and Rose needs to seek out any cases of poetry that might be hiding. Meanwhile, President Eisenhower of the US is about to make a state visit and Rose has also been asked to ensure that Queen Wallis is fit to meet to him. But she’s met with a queen who is desperate to go back to her homeland and spouting claims of a highly sensitive document that could destroy the whole Alliance. Could this way of life finally be over for everyone?

Since the events of Widowland, paranoia has spread through the Alliance like wildfire. It’s a scary regime and it seems that very few people are above suspicion. However, in some ways, I could see reflections of our society within it. Surveillance is much more prevalent now and I think mistrust is too.

The classification system of women is stomach-churning, as the criteria for each rank seems to largely be based on looks, wealth and reproductive abilities. While it’s possible to move down ranks, it doesn’t seem to be possible to move up, so once a woman gets her social class, that’s generally her path for life. The Friedas are the lowest class of women and they live in Widowlands, which are run-down areas of town, segregated from everyone else. It’s a fascinating, infuriating notion but a fantastic device for illustrating misogyny and objectification in speculative fiction like this.

Rose is a 31-year-old Geli, the highest class of woman, but she is unmarried with no children. She is dating newspaper editor Douglas and she starts to imagine what her life would be like if she married him in order to avoid declassification. I felt sure that Rose wouldn’t subject herself to an unhappy marriage but the fact that she was considering it to protect her status worried me. I really didn’t want such a brilliant mind as hers become little more than a subserviant wife and baby-making machine.

The regime is doing everything it can to erase people’s memories of the Leader’s assassination and everything that happened before it. This kind of mass mind control is a terrifying notion that I wouldn’t like to believe is possible but that I’m not completely convinced isn’t. While this book is supposed to be an alternate history, certain parts of it felt very futuristic and I can definitely see some of these tactics being employed by future dictatorships.

The idea of poetry as a powerful weapon is one that literature lovers can easily get on board with. Poetry has been used to ignite revolutions, express rebel ideas and deep emotions for centuries, so it’s only natural that a regime like the Protectorate would want to take that power away from its people. Rose’s search for poetry leads her to the most desperate members and places of society and once again, her eyes are opened to the realities of what’s going on under her very nose.

Queen Wallis is recently widowed and she’s very unhappy at having to stay in the country. Even as the most powerful woman in the Alliance, she is still a prisoner of the Protectorate and subject to vicious gossip, like every other woman. Rose knows her pain and as she gets to know the queen, she wants to do everything she can to help her fulfill her mission to go home. One thing I love about Rose is her ability to see the world from positions that are wildly different to her own and she uses that selflessness for good.

The Alliance segregates its women because it knows how much disruption they can cause, if they unite. By separating them, they eliminate the possibility of friendships forming across castes and from women like Rose seeing the truth of how the Friedas live. The fact that Rose gains all the information she has about the Widowlands via secret visits suggests that the men don’t consider that women might have curious, intelligent minds of their own. 

Queen High is an explosive, powerful sequel to a book that imagines a pivotal point in European history differently while managing to mirror our present world. It’s a very intricate, engaging and exciting feminist speculative novel headed up by a heroine that you want nothing but good things for. I would love to see what Carey writes next, as a mind that can conjure up the idea of these books is a truly fascinating one.

WhiskyCast: A Podcast That Goes Down Smooth

It also pertains to me due to a recent situation. I was on a cruise and my package included a free tasting of the best bourbon whiskeys at the lounge. Now, I know nothing about whiskey at all. Any light beer or a Pinot Noir red wine is my entire regiment of drinking alcohol. 

The invitation said 7:00 PM. My partner Linda advised that we go right at seven, since "hardly anyone would show up to such an event."

Because of my fastidiousness about being early or on time, I talked her into arriving at 6:50.  The lounge was packed. Clearly, we had underestimated the interest with bourbon whiskey. When the bartender, a Serbian man named Goran, talked about the history of whiskey and bourbon specifically, I, along with everyone else, was fascinated.

When I returned from the cruise, I wondered if there was a podcast about whiskey, which is a dumb question, because there is a podcast for almost every activity or interest. 

 That's when I discovered the WhiskyCast podcast.

 To my delight and surprise, WhiskeyCast is one of the oldest podcasts in the industry. It's a podcast that began in 2005 and is still delighting its listeners today. WhiskeyCast has released over 1,000 episodes!

The podcast's subtitle is Cask Strength Conversation since 2005. Now, I don't even know what that means, but after listening to several episodes of WhiskyCast, I want to know more.

Let's define what whiskey is.

 Whisky or whiskey is a type of distilled alcoholic beverage made from fermented grain mash. Various grains are used for different varieties, including barley, corn, rye, and wheat. Whiskey is typically aged in wooden casks, which are typically made of charred white oak.

People are passionate about whiskey. They're like wine drinkers, only less obnoxious. 

Here's what retired psychologist and whiskey drinker Gary Beaufait says:"I'm into bourbon because it's a type of whiskey that's an American invention with certain criteria needed to be met to be an official, legitimate Bourbon."

Beaufait continues: "The process produces a smooth, palatable, and drinkable liquor of varying proofs - ranging from 80 upwards to 120+, but typically 90s. For me, the proofs in the high 80s and 90s are just right if the product is blended nicely. The different types and brands can be rather nuanced, so people have preferences. The most sought after are very hard to find, and a secondary market exists w rather high dollar amount-hundreds to thousands for a prized bottle."

Listening to WhiskyCast is like hearing a well-oiled machine hum along with seamless efficiency. Each week, veteran journalist Mark Gillespie brings listeners the latest whiskey news, in-depth interviews, tasting notes, and much more. Each podcast features brand-new content, and unless there’s a special occasion, and they do “best of” shows.

Gillespie is a terrific host. His voice is as smooth as some of the whiskeys they taste, and his delivery is effortless and pure. Gillespie is the winner of the International Wine & Spirits Competition’s 2023 Spirits Communicator Trophy, which seems to be quite an honor in the field. From the episodes I've listened to, the host deserves such an accolade. In his 18th year as host, Gillespie sounds as if he has the verve of his first episode. The podcast has a standard and successful formula. Each episode begins with whiskey news, and I underestimated how much such news there is. For example, the news covered the dominance of Jameson in the global and U.S. markets. Reportedly, Jameson accounts for 70 percent of U.S. whiskey sales and 40 percent of whiskey sales around the world. 

In another episode, the news included a story about Jack Daniel’s being ordered to stop work on one of its new barrel houses after a neighbor sued over whiskey fungus problems, while Kentucky distillers are hoping a bill pending in the state legislature could mean the end of the “barrel tax.” 

After the news, there is a main story like the one called "Choosing passion" on the March 5th episode. The episode details how Melissa Rift’s career path is anything but traditional for a whiskey maker. She started out as a family therapist before discovering her passion for Bourbon, and it’s led her to become the new master taster for Old Forester.  

On the December 4th episode, during the What You're Tasting segment of the show, host Mark Gillespie reviewed a Waterford, a peated Irish single malt, which is apparently a relative rarity, that had notes of peat smoke, heather, honey and a nice maltiness.

In the news segment of the show, Gillespie reported that American whiskey is still subject to tariffs into EU nations because of tariffs imposed by the Trump Administration.

 The main segment of the show dealt with luxury single-malt whiskeys as an alternative investment. In the interview with Duncan McFadzean, listeners learn that whiskey sales have increased by 11 percent in the last year, yet the investment value of luxury whiskey has dropped by seven percent, largely due to what McFadzean calls "flipping," which is the practice of buying whiskey and selling it for a profit on the secondary markets.

Other segments include a report on upcoming whiskey events. In the December 4th episode, listeners hear about whiskey tasting in Vermont and in London.

On the February 27th episode, the main story was about whiskey clubs. Unbeknownst to the whiskey obtuse such as myself, there are literally hundreds of whiskey clubs around the world, with more being formed all the time. On the episode, listeners hear from some club founders on how they started their clubs, along with advice for those thinking about forming a whiskey club. 

In that same episode, WhiskyCast announced the launch of the new WhiskyCast Community mobile app, which is a smart monetization, brand loyalty, and brand extension move.

If you are a whiskey drinker and haven't heard of this podcast, I highly suggest listening to at least one episode. There, you'll find like-minded people who enjoy the social aspects of whiskey, its unique color and taste, and the artistic skill needed to make whiskey.

The alien's employment will not have a negative impact on American workers' pay or working conditions.

Requirements for Potential Employees

The following must be attested to by the beneficiary:

He or she met the position's educational and work experience requirements at the time the labor certification application was submitted. If the beneficiary meets or exceeds the minimum standards, there is not a problem.

He or she keeps his or her legal position (if residing in the U.S.).

As a result, it makes no difference whether the immigrant works for the sponsoring employer during the application process or after it is approved.
