THE INNOCENTS - Review

DISTRIBUTOR: IFC Midnight

SYNOPSIS: It’s during the summer holidays when Ida and her autistic older sister Anna are moved by their parents into a new community complex. With almost everyone gone for the summer, Ida is lucky to make two friends, Aisha and Ben. Left to themselves and out of sight of the adults, they slowly discover they have hidden powers. As they explore their newfound abilities in the nearby forests and playgrounds, their innocent play takes a dark turn and strange things begin to happen.

REVIEW: Given the DC and Marvel Universes with the majority of their superheroes coming into their powers as adults we often forget that at their core many of these stories are based on classical Greek and Roman mythology. What makes this tale so chilling is that children don’t often think about their actions; they are either acting or reacting, not thinking about consequences or intent, and Eskil Vogt frames that perfectly.

The narrative is a coming of age story for Ida. When we first meet her she is presented as a bit of a mean spirited child, but we cut her some slack as, the younger of the two sisters, she is often left to be with her older autistic sister. However, her armor begins to crack when she is shocked by Ben’s actions. Eskil does an outstanding job to present this world of these four children and allows us to know their situations, who they are, and never forget they are children. Likewise, there is this earthly element to these powers. We’re not sure where they’ve come from or how it happened. Eskil presents them almost as a natural extension, their manifestation or presence symbolized by the wind. He never lets the viewer forget that these are children with evolving powers. As things progress we see each child navigating their own emotional obstacle course, some more successful than others. Things escalate till ultimately Ida must make some adult choices. The story’s final confrontation comes as the residents are coming back from their holiday. The sister bond and there is an intensity worthy of a Cronenberg film, minus the gore. It is simplistic and powerful.

Eskil’s visuals are a complex and intricate weaving of location, editing, and color. There is a look that seems to suggest memories of childhood, fashioned after off color photographs in a photo album. With the majority of the residents gone he captures the complex in a way that feels like a classic Greek or Roman theater, or even the coliseum. They are children playing among the ruins. It’s interesting how he interplays the light and shadows to reflect and enhance the character's emotional state. Likewise, because he uses a variety of shots to open up the story the film has this “epic” feel that never exceeds the lucidity of the presence of the children. The film has a look that captures the warmth of summer and still allows the colors to come through. I found it often stunning to watch even during some of the films' shocking moments.

This film has amazing performances. Rakel Lenora Fløttum as Ida takes us on the character’s journey from a sulking, willful child to evolved, innocent person you feel hopeful for. Sam Ashraf’s Ben is such a tragic character and he gives it this emotional heartfelt performance. You feel his angist, pain, and sorrow. There is a moment where his character surrenders that is a deeply emotional performance. Mina Yasmin Bremseth Asheim’s Aisha is a delight. She presents this character that seems wise beyond her years and still maintains this innocence and wonder about her. Alva Brynsmo Ramstad is sensational as Anna. There is nothing in the press notes about the actress so I could not tell you if she has a disability or if this was all her performance. However, there was something genuine about her work here that would suggest either she is or has someone close to her that is. If she is, cheers to her for what she accomplished here. As if this film is not amazing enough, these performances all deserve a standing ovation.

As the film draws to a close the residents are returning from their holiday. Ida and Anna unite and come together as sisters, as family. What happens goes unnoticed except for a handful of other children who perceive what is transpiring. Like a Greek or Roman chorus, they are bearing witness. By doing so it raises other questions as to what is going on here and how many others might be involved. With that it brought to mind both the Wolf Rilla and John Carpenter films “The Village of the Damned.” However, THE INNOCENTS presents a more powerful argument. Here are these adults, going about their daily lives, as this story takes place right in plane sight. Is it that they are not capable of or are they being prevented from seeing? Regardless, THE INNOCENTS is a powerful film and near perfect film. So I’m not sure how I feel about the filmmakers revisiting this universe.

Scott Slusher The Guardian

Scott Slusher photographed Glynn Simmons for The Guardian’s series “How we survive.” Glynn Simmons spent 48 years in prison after being wrongfully convicted of the murder of Carolyn Sue Rogers. Since recently being exonerated, Simmons has filed suit against the state of Oklahoma. Scott captured intimate portraits of Simmons at home.

The Guardian’s ongoing “How we survive” project features individuals who have survived significantly traumatic experiences and explores how they are now able to reflect on those experiences over time. Simmons is hopeful and optimistic for the future. “Look at me! Look at me! You can tell. I’m so happy…Life is beautiful, man. It’s so beautiful.”

In THE INNOCENTS we meet four children who become friends during the summer holidays. Out of sight of the adults, they discover they have hidden powers. While exploring their newfound abilities in the nearby forests and playgrounds, their innocent play takes a dark turn and strange things begin to happen.

Eskil Vogt is an Academy Award® nominated writer for the 2021 film “The Worst Person in the World.” A directing graduate from La Fémis in Paris, the National French Film School, his directing debut “Blind” premiered at Sundance in 2014.

It earned him The World Cinema Screenwriting Award before going on to win more than 20 international awards including the European Cinema Label Best Film Award at the Panorama Section at the Berlin Film Festival. In Norway, the film won him national film awards for writing and directing as well as the Critics’ Prize for film of the year. Vogt also has a longstanding and close collaboration with Joachim Trier including the scripts for the features Reprise (2006), Oslo, August 31st (2011), Louder than Bombs (2015), Thelma (2017) and The Worst Person in the World (2021). All their films have premiered at A-list festivals to critical acclaim and achieved wide international distribution, establishing Eskil and Joachim internationally as Norway’s most revered and successful filmmaking talent.

This movie's trailer would show at the Gateway Film Center while seeing other movies. I caught part of it until I noticed it was horror. I also heard good things about this one ahead of seeing it.
