It's dawn when Ed manages to drag himself back to base, splattered with blood and so exhausted he can barely see straight.

Denny gets to him first, him and Maria waiting as close as they could to the perimeter. The general and a crowd of gaping onlookers are there too, but for now they keep their distance.

"You alright?" Denny demands, wiping the blood off his face and putting a steadying hand on his shoulder.

They're far enough away from everyone else that he feels comfortable saying, "Alex says hi. Mustang followed me."

He pales. "Did he-"

"He went with them," he says and Denny lets out a relieved breath. "Try and keep me alive until I can talk to them, yeah?"

He passes out before he can hear Denny's answer.

Roy is dead.

It had take no time for him to notice his friend was missing, but he'd hoped. Maes had gone searching, trying to think of all the places he could possibly be, but it had been a fool's errand.

They'd found his dogtags in what remained of the Ishvalan city, all blood and body parts and rubble.

He doesn't think he'd be able to identify Roy's body even if they could find it.

"I'm going to kill him," Riza says calmly, dry eyed and back straight. It's how he knows she means it.

The first time they hear an explosion, they assume they're under attack.

Everyone reaches for their firearm, except for Roy, who pulls on his gloves. Rize cautiously opens the door, looking for intruders, and instead she gets a face full of smoke that's very obviously coming from across the hall.

She sees people down the hall doing the same thing she is, looking for the source of that very concerning sound. It happens again and this time she's close enough to see the walls shake with it and the smoke a changes color from a typical dark grey to white and gains a sweet scent.

Everyone ducks back in their offices, deciding that they're not being invades and so feeling absolutely zero need to investigate further when all that commotion is coming from the Fullmetal Alchemist's office.

She looks to Roy. "This is your jurisdiction, sir."

He tugs off his gloves, giving the smoke a concerned look. "What, just because it's an alchemist's office no one else is willing to say anything about it?"

"You say that like we don't benefit from the same thing," she answers, although they've never exploded anything before. Inside the office.

Roy shoots her a sour look but strides forward and gives the door two sharp knocks. "Colonel! Explain yourself!"

The door opens and the smoke starts filling the hall even more rapidly, although for some reason this one doesn't cause her to cough.

The infamous Colonel Elric leans against the doorframe, nothing close to proper posture. She can also hear several people yelling from behind him.

His hair is in a high tale, his jacket is off, and his white shirt has been rolled to his elbows, the first two buttons are undone, and there are several strange green streaks over it and one high on his forehead. "Oh, hey Mustang."

Riza's glad everyone else had decided this wasn't worth having to interact with an alchemist if only so they wouldn't see Roy getting treated disrespectfully and him not doing a damn thing about it.

He should. But she's seen that look on his face before. She supposes she should just be grateful that the Colonel's not wearing a skirt.

"What the hell are you doing?" Roy demands.

"Want to see?" he returns brightly, a glint in his eye that would send Riza running for cover if this was a battlefield. "You like making things go boom, don't you?"

Before Roy can reply, Colonel Elric reaches out, loops his hand in the chain of his watch, and yanks him into his office, kicking the door behind them with a cheerful bang.

"Uh," Havoc says, "should we - do something? About that?"

Their team is bad enough and they only have the one alchemist. Colonel Elric may be the only State Alchemist, but he has three more alchemists on his team, to say nothing of the rumors she's hears about his automail mechanic. The paperwork on Roy's desk is important, but even she has her limits.

"He has his gloves," Riza says finally, "I'm sure that if he decides he needs rescuing, he'll be able to handle it himself."

11. What work took you the longest to write?

I'm going to skip the ongoing fics for this one considering, well, that depends on how many chapters and all of that. In terms of the other works, it was probably "The Heart Is a Thing to Be Broken," which was my "Straw Hats learn about Winner Island" fic. It basically consumed my soul for days until I finished it

There was also "To Call Myself Beloved," which turned out longer than I was expecting it to be. My Truffyfest server peeps can attest to my complaining about how the story kept expanding 😂

18. The character that gave you the most trouble writing this year?

I wrote Drake for the first time this year for the Dark Waters zine, so I was definitely not as comfortable writing him as I am characters like Law and Doffy. Still, I'm really happy with how that fic, "To Prove Worthy," turned out! It focuses on Drake's relationship with Sengoku after he takes Drake in post-Minion Island.

20. Which work of yours have you reread the most?

Oh, this is a good question! This year, I've reread my "Your Heart, In My Chest" series from Lawlu Week pretty frequently. In it, Law and Luffy switch hearts post-Wano, but then Winner Island happens; Luffy realizes something is wrong because Law's heart is all wrong in his chest, so the Straw Hats track down and rescue Law and Bepo.

23. Did you do any collaborative works this year?

I helped beta @thedoctor91011's wonderful fic "Caught in the Web" and @betsib's delightful fic "(Love Will Find a Way) Where Wolves Fear to Prey" but that's about it. Tragically, I had to drop out of the Big Bang because my schedule this fall has been absolutely hellacious.

24. Did you write any gifts this year?

I'll be writing a Secret Santa fic once I'm done with grading, and that will go up around Christmas.

25. Did you receive any gifts this year?

I should be getting a Secret Santa fic in return! Oh, and @cal-cium-the-nerd wrote a delightful Heart Pirates fic, "Common Factor," for a couple of my One Piece fight prompts!

28. Favorite work you wrote this year?

Oh, this is hard. I think I'll cop out and use the same answer as the one I used for #3 here: "To Call Myself Beloved" and  “A Fleeting Moment (When the Sun Can Kiss the Moon)."

30. Biggest surprise while writing this year?

I'll say, I was very surprised by how well-received "Hurricane Heat in My Head" was. It's a jealous!Luffy fic that I wrote for Lawlu Week, and it was the one I was most unsure about, but it was probably the most popular fic I did for the entire event. Go figure!

Also, I'm constantly amazed by how often I break through writer's block for a fic in the shower 😂

Ed writes Al to let him know that he found Ling and to fill him on the stupid plan he's gotten caught up in. He then rings Winry, tapping his fingers impatiently against the glass of the phone booth.

"Rockbell Automail."

She sounds older.

"Hey, I'm going to be Central for a while if you want to swing by," he says.

There's a moment of silence, then she says incredulously, "Edward? Are you - you're back in Amestris?"

He rolls his eyes. "I just said I was in Central."

"What did Ling get you involved with now?" she demands. "Is Al there? How much trouble are you actually in?"

"None," yet, "sheesh, can't I just give you a call and invite you to visit without receiving the the third degree?"

"No," she answers. "If I pack quickly, I can catch the three o'clock train. Meet us at the station. I'm bringing Paninya."

Who the fuck is Paninya?

Winry hangs up on him before he can ask.

Mixology is a science, of a sort, so being a bartender is easy. It's even fun most of the time, and his boss upped his pay because he's been able to cut down on security ever since Ed started working there. Anyone who wants to start shit in his bar doesn't make that same mistake twice, because no matter how tough they think they are, he can and will kick their ass.

It’s a little hole in the wall bar, which is how he likes it. The stuffy upper crust of cities is the worst part of it.

The first time a group of boys in blues stumble in, he’s prepared to firmly suggest they find somewhere else to get a drink when he sees a familiar face. “Jean Jeramiah,” he shouts, the Resembool twang that he normally smooths over coming out strong, “is that you? Your mama said you were dead! None of us were sure it was metaphorical.”

It was, obviously, but Mrs. Havoc had been furious about her son joining the military. Last he checked, she was still holding a grudge.

They all stop, looking between him in Jean in confusion.

Jean blinks at him several times, squints, and says, “Elric? What are you doing out here?”

He’s definitely using his last name because he’s not sure if he’s him or Al. “Take a guess, genius.”

Jean rolls his eyes. A dark haired, dark eyed man asks, “Are you going to introduce us, Havoc?”

“Yeah Havoc,” he says mockingly, “are you going to introduce us?”

“This is Ed,” Jean says, giving him a stink eye. He supposes was Al always the nice one. “Ed, these are my coworkers and my superior officer.”

“A pleasure,” he says dryly, and almost means it.
