Record 2666 ½. #PinkFloyd #TheDarkSideOfTheMoon #Quadraphonic This one's a bit of a cheat, so I'm going to call it no. 2666 and a half. Of course I already own this album and have played it years ago in my "All Sean's Records" vinyl count, but my father-in-law Jim recently found me a 1973 Quadraphonic pressing, and I couldn't resist giving this magical record a spin and a post. While I don't have a Quadraphonic stylus and decoder, I do happen to have four speakers set-up in my room normally, so I can "pretend". That being said occasionally my mind plays tricks on me (like with the clocks at the beginning of "Time") that think I can hear it in quad, but I think that's more the fact that a lot of sites tell me that even the folded quad to stereo mix will sound different to the stereo recording. Da innamorati della grande #musica oggi non possiamo non celebrare l'uscita di #thedarksideofthemoon dei #pinkfloyd, che veniva pubblicato il 1° Marzo del 1973, proprio mentre i #Queen muovevano i primi passi. Le due band sono collegate in vario modo, ad esempio dalla partecipazione di #brianmay e #davidgilmour alla versione di #smokeonthewater per l'Armenia, dall'amicizia tra #rogertaylor e #nickmason e anche dal fatto che #freddiemercury apprezzava la band. Ma non solo! Inconsapevolmente i Queen e i Pink Floyd hanno anche "realizzato un album insieme" (le virgolette sono doverosissime): quella che vedete nella foto è la copertina di Obscured By Cloud dei Pink nell'edizione del 1978 stampata dall'etichetta Sierra. Se vi sembra che qualcosa non torni, beh avete ragione, perché il disco è quello giusto ma la band ritratta decisamente no! 1 Marzo 1973: 50 anni per quello che viene considerato l’album perfetto, con una delle copertine più iconiche, talmente bella da rendere trascurabile il fatto che manchi l’indaco, pare per esigenze “estetiche, (non creava molto contrasto col viola), e la scomposizione in colori del fascio di luce bianco, dovrebbe avvenire anche all’interno del prisma. Chi ama i vinili lo ha certamente; continua ad essere tra i ”dischi” più richiesti e più esposti nei negozi e nelle fiere. Pink Floyd の 1973年発表のアルバム "The Dark Side of the Moon" の50周年記念ボックスセットが発売されることで、このアルバムのジャケットアートを採用した記事をよく目にするようになった。邦題は「狂気」。月と言うと、日本ではかぐや姫やうさぎがすぐに連想されるが、特に満月では狼男が出現し、心も乱れたどこか不吉なイメージもある。「狂気」とは、それをうまく想起させる秀逸な邦題だ。Pink Floydの中心メンバーでありながら、精神に障害をきたしバンドを去らざるを得なくなった Syd Barrett に対するリスペクトが包含されていることは言うまでもないことだ。

この "The Dark Side of the Moon" は音楽的にもプログレッシブ・ロックという範疇だけではなく、ロック界のアルバムとしてもその金字塔とも言えるアルバムの一枚である。音楽的な面だけではなく、Hipgnosis によってデザインされたジャケットもシンプルでとても印象的だ。

こちらがそのジャケット・イメージだ。Apple Musicで使用されているものだ。

このジャケットは何を語っているのか。最近、このジャケットを見る機会が増え、再び考えてしまうのだ。以前にも書いたが、私は学生時代に、このジャケットを題材にレポートを書いて単位を取得した経験がある。当時の私の解釈は、光の分光と収束による「無限」であった。facebook をやっていた頃、あるグループでこのアルバムが話題になったときに私はこの学生時代のエピソードを投稿した事がある。そこには、思った以上の反応があった。多くの人がこのジャケットについて考えていた事がわかったものだ。

このジャケットを何度も見ている間に、ふと、このイメージを三次元でに見たらどうなるのか。そんな興味が湧いた。そこで、自作の3Dモデラーで立体化してみることにした。

三角柱のプリズムはいいとして、私のモデラーはあくまでもソリッドモデルなので、透明感を出すことはできない。それでも、無理やり光源を描けば透明な質感を表現できるだろうか。それとも、プリズム内部の光束は諦めるか。それとソモそもそもこの光、点光源から広がってきているのだろうか。だが、プリズムに入る前の光束を見るとその高さは一定で、この範囲だけからは点光源と判断はできない。３D化を考えると、いくつか疑問点も出てくる。まぁ、ここは割り切って、光束の幅は一定で広がっては行かないこととする。プリズム内で屈折した光束は、両端の座標がわかっていることから描くこととする。これならば3D化できそうだ。基本方針は決まった。

プリズムによって分光された光束は虹色の各色で塗りつぶすことになる。ここは7色で考えて座標値を計算していたのだが、色を割り当てる段階でおかしいことに気づく。アルバムジャケットでは、分光された色は7色ではなく6色であったのだ。

そうだ、日本では7色とされる虹の色は欧米では6色だった。それがそのままジャケットのカラーリングにも現れている。彼らにとっては、分光された光を6色で描くことは極めて自然なことだったのだ。かつての Apple のロゴも6色だった。

ここは、日本的解釈ということでこのまま7色で行くか。やや悩んだが、オリジナルのアルバムに準じて6色とすることにした。再度、6色に変更して座標を計算し直した。

続いて色だ。せっかく虹色を作るので、この機会に自作3Dモデラーにも虹色のカラー・パレットを組み込むことにする。だが、ここでもつまずく。アルバムジャケットを見れば明らかなのだが、使用されている6色は、単純に虹の6色ではなく、やや明るめに設定されている。6色の明るさがかなり調整されているのだ。各色の明るさに統一感があるのだ。知れば知るほど、考えつくされたアルバムのデザインである。ここは、アルバムの各色をPhotoShopのスポイトツールで各色のRGB値を調べれば色は再現可能だ。だが、前述の通り虹色のカラー・パレットを3Dモデラーに組み込むことも目的の一つだったため、色の修正は最小限にとどめ、虹色カラー・パレット作成を優先した。このため、各色の明暗に差が出て統一感に欠ける結果となった。ここは仕方がないと諦めることにする。

当初描くことにしていたプリズム内部を通過する光束であるが、これは描かないこととした。理由は、色々と角度を変更してみたが、その光束がプリズムの底に当たる前面の三角形と側面の両方に差しかかり、光束の途中で色や明るさを変える必要があるが、それが不可能であるからだ。自作3Dモデラーはレイトレーシング機能はないので、オブジェクトの一部の色を変更することができない。もしやるとすれば、オブジェクトを分割することいなるが、座標計算は煩雑になる。このため、時間と手間を理由にプリズム内の光束は省略した。

そんな事もあって、さほど難しいとは思わなかった"The Dark Side of the Moon" のアルバムの3D化がようやく完成した。この程度のことでも簡単に想定外のことに遭遇する。半日程度でできそうに思えたが、結局のところ足掛け2日かかった。いずれも、思い込みと勘違いである。このようにして物事は遅れていくものだ。この程度の作業においても、最善策だけを考えておくことにはリスクが有る。

2次元のプリズムを通過する光をとりあえず3次元化することができた。一度モデルを作成すると、XYZ軸方向への移動や水平面での回転もできる。様々な角度からプリズムを眺めることができる。2次元で見ていたときとはまた違った見え方もある。再び、このジャケットの意味するところ、語りかけているものを考えてみたい。
