Nato Forces Deployed to Latvia Amid Fears of Russian Aggression

Nato has deployed unprecedented numbers of forces to Latvia, a reaction to fears of future Russian aggression against the Baltic states.  Once part of the USSR, Latvia is now an independent country in the European Union. Its government has expressed staunch support for Ukraine.  But its close cultural ties to Russia is causing concern for the Latvian government - more than a quarter of Latvia’s population identifies as Russian.

(Continued) … As a Pole, I totally understand the Latvians, although I don't support violence, I wish the Russians treated the country they live in with respect, and understood what their own country did to Latvia, and other Central and Eastern European countries. It would be the same as if he waved the Nazi flag. Both the Russians and the Germans treated our people with disrespect and imperialism. But only Russians nowadays still fight imperial wars of conquest, and for that reason, their flags will not be tolerated, nor will their 'soviet memorials'

Comment By WhatHappenedIn1979???:  I still remember 2014 when everyone was trying to bring light to the fallen soviet union vs the live on.  Just before the union died and the iron curtain was done all they wanted was reform and change, and the true soviet who wasn't marred by the blood of war woukd be disappointed with Russia today just as they were sad when Tiananmen happened. 

Pacific Influence:  A massively traumatic time in Russia was the 1990s when people were not getting paid for months, food shelves were often empty, the ruble was so unstable people had to discreetly use US dollars, and people stole copper wire from the power lines to sell causing rolling blackouts. Vladimir Putin's popularity is largely about being able to promise people more stability in their lives and warning them that everything will go back to the way it was in the 90's if he were not in charge. …… (Continue)  

(Continued) …… Also half of Russia doesn't have access to the internet due to poor infrastructure or simply not being able to afford it.  In the short term people may rally around the flag but wait and see what happens when when people 30 and older start getting 90s PTSD flashbacks or the Russian government no longer has the money to pay out pensions. Nationalism doesn't pay the bills or buy groceries. 

TheChancellor:  Always glossed over in news accounts of the Russian populations of all three countries is that the bulk of them were brought in after the 1940 invasions as part of Soviet russification doctrine while tens of thousands of Balts were executed and sent to the gulags.  Where Russian was mandated as the official language.  So the Russian speakers that refused to learn Latvian, Estonian or Lithuanian can move across the borders, not very far they're small countries, and embrace their ethnic brothers win win for everybody, we should be so lucky. …… (Continue) 

During the Soviet occupation Riga had a majority population of Russians,. internal passports and government approval were needed to travel between cities.  And the current population of Europe and else where needs to be reminded that the 3 Baltic countries were identified by the US as Captive Nations and the annexation by Soviets was not recognized.  All had consulates in Washington DC, not quite governments in exile but representatives of the free Baltic republics.

“The Grammar of God” by Aviya Kushner is Ms. Kushner’s experience reading the Bible in English for the first time. Ms. Kushner isn’t an immigrant, in face she’s from New York, but until she began graduate school she had never read the Bible in a language other than Hebrew. When she begins her class on the English Bible, she learns, from the very first verse in Genesis, that the experience of reading the Bible in English is not the same as she has experienced the Bible in Hebrew.

She embarks on a journey to explore some of the subtle and not so subtle differences between the Hebrew and English Bibles. Throughout her journey she weaves in some of the personal moments that are related to some of the texts she is exploring.
