Sunshine

Word Count: 638

When Curtis ends up gambling with his female counterpart.

Curtis stared at her long and hard.

And she watched him in turn. Her small almost rusted cup ‘thunked’ on the makeshift table as she took a long sip of the moonshine from it. Cringing slightly, she didn’t break eye contact and Curtis chuckled. Curtis eyed her a little more before putting three poorly drawn pieces of cardboard down.

The small crowd that had gathered shifted their focus to the younger woman, as she laid down her own pieces of cardboard, smiling, “Two up, Everett.”

Chuckling to himself once more, he watched as she quickly smoothed the rations, two wing nuts, a bolt, a hat, and her locket into the deep pockets on her ratty sweater. He couldn’t even be mad at losing the extra rations and the spare parts and his extra hat to her.

“One more game,” he asked as the crowd dissipated, “come on princess. One more…gotta win back my extra hat…it’s my lucky one.”

“It’s luck didn’t do much for you today. You got nothing left to offer me, Everett,” she laughed, placing a small hand on his shoulder as she started walking behind him, “What are you going to offer me next, Gilliam’s crutch? Edgar’s hatchet? Don’t bet your friend’s stuff on a game you’re horrible at.”

“No,” he smirked, knowing exactly how to get her to stop moving, “a kiss.”

She froze, her fingers still on his bicep, “what?”

“If you win again, I will give you a kiss,” he chuckled, looking back to her shell-shocked expression, “I win, you agree to take care of the guys back here. Get Gilliam’s rations for him. Take care of the medical needs, stuff like that.”

She scoffed, “one kiss or free labor for an undisclosed amount of time? How stupid do you think I am to take that bet, Everett?”

“Alright,” he laughed, “but it did catch your interest…like it would have any other woman in the tail end.”

“Full of yourself, much?”

“Play for keeps,” he said quickly, “one more game. You win, you get me. I win, I get you.”

She smirked, “What happened to you wanting me to take care of the tail enders?”

“Maybe I just want you to take care of me,” he shrugged, pulling her onto his lap. She laughed at him, gently stroking his beard. He was riding the high of the bootlegged alcohol he had in his system, “maybe I just want to be around you.”

“You see me all the time Curtis,” she laughed, kissing his temple. His hands shifted up to her cheeks, the rough, calloused pads stroking her as though she would break if his touch was too firm, “Curtis.”

“Just let me forget about the train for a minute, sunshine.”

The younger woman sighed. She knew that he needed a distraction.

Everyone did after today.

They’d had to witness another punishment, from Minister Mason. The evil witch had taken the arm up to the elbow of a twelve-year-old for punching a guard who had pushed his little sister.

Looking down at Curtis, she could see the pain in his cerulean orbs. Drawn in by the man she’d known for most of her life. She wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed his temple again, nodding against it, “okay, Curtis.”

The corners of his pursed lips twitched upwards slightly if only for a moment, and he reached to shuffle the cardboard that they used as playing cards, “Alright…bets...”

“I’m already yours, Curtis,” she whispered, kissing his temple again, “there’s no need for that bet.”

He shuddered against her lips, and he dropped the cards, “don’t tell me that, sunshine.”

“Just the truth, Everett,” she admitted, stroking his jaw sweetly. He looked up at her, his eyes silently judging, assessing the situation, before they settled on her lips, “Curtis…just kiss me, will you?”
